That's the most BS thing I've ever seen! You can't buy those songs separately! It's BS!
Man if the movie were on here, I'd totally buy it like 3 times cause it's such a good movie
i found all of these songs individually on Music Junk on my droid phone,(for FREE)
I agree with the earlier complaints. Look, you are getting our money, so make the individual tracks available. You do it for other albums, why not this one. Makes no business sense. Now instead of getting a couple of dollars from me, you get nothing, because I'm not paying for songs I don't want. If that were the case, I'd go out and buy the CD. I thought Itunes was all about the ability to buy the SONGS you wanted without having to waste money on stuff you didn't want.
Criminy!!! What's up with the "album only"??? Al a cart, please. I have many of the songs already, and don't want all of them.
There are so many great songs on this album by so many legendary bands! Personal favorite is Reach Out by Cheap Trick. It is a hard-driving, in-your-face tune that only improves with age. Hagar is at his best with the title track. While Blue Oyster Cult performs arguably their second best song (behind Don't Fear the Reaper) with Veterans of the Psychic Wars--written by famed author Michael Moorcock. Do yourself a favor and dowload this entire classic album!
Like someone mentioned, this soundtrack has been long mired in funny contracts- no surprise its "album only", thats probably the only way iTunes could get it. A few of the songs ARE available directly under their band's name, but why? All of the songs are good on their own, but fan's of the movie can easily visualize the movie scene tied to it. From digging up the Lok-Nar with BOC's "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" to the doomed B-17 with Don Felder's "Heavy Metal (takin a ride)", these songs will certainly conjure the psychedic images of the movie. While the animation of the movie may not compare to today's animation, some of these songs are classics even 38 years later- and should be part of any real rock fan's library.
I'm not paying $10 for one song...
I just want Don Felder's Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)... you can have the rest of it. What a joke. I am not going to buy a whole album for one song.
I've been looking for a high-quality stero version of Don Felder's "All of You" for several months now. I was pumpued when I found it on here, but was shot down like the B-17 when I found out it was "album only". You're missing out on loads of money, iTunes! Make all of the movies able to buy, and all songs availible for individual purchase.
OK you guys, i know what you're thinking. you are thinking that there's only a few songs on there you would like to buy. BUT if you buy the album you realize that nearly every song on here is totally awesome. Seriosly just listen to all the songs. A couple of songs the I didn't like before but are now some of my favorite songs are- Veteran of Psyhic wars Reach out radar rider open arms queen bee i must be dreamin' the mob rules sorry thats more than a couple but i am just so glad i purchased the album BUY IT click yes if you agree
Because it Rocks
This album is like a good story - each song brings to mind the scene it's from. I wouldn't dream of cherry picking singles from it. Since most of the songs are great anyway, it's a no brainer. Just buy the whole meal and enjoy it!
I've been looking for this soundtrack for a long time. It was my favorite cassette in college (remember cassettes?). So many great songs for a really great movie! Man, I miss John Candy!
I might be mistaking but I think your missing Phil Collins - In the air tonight on this album.
if you can't handle the entire album...then you sir or mam are not metal
I Grew into an adult listening to this album! I read all of the magazines that the movie was developed from and was amazed with the way they linked the stories together. In It's time, the movie was way ahead of all other animated features. It rocked then and It still rocks now!!! No one else mentioned Working in a coal mine by Devo! It is one of the best songs in the whole Album! I still have the LP! It is one of my most valued posessions. As for the Album only thing, I would not have it any other way! I'm Fifty and Both of my Airborne Cavalry Scout Sons(One in Iraq the other in Afghanistan) were raised on this stuff! The Oldest one bought me an Ipod touch for father's day this year. It is one of the best gifts that I have ever received!
The varied performers work for different record companies. There is only ONE contract for the whole lot. Heck, it took almost a decade to get the thing released on CD. No one wants to go through those negotiations again. You might want to try the individual artists (or song names) to see if they released the track on one of their own albums. I got here through a Devo link. As for the music itself... meh. It's average with a few exceptions. As I said above, you might want to try the individual artists.
The orchestral score by Elmer Bernstein is excellent, too. I particularly loved his stuff for the Taarna segment. Can we persuade iTunes to offer that? I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Agreed! What's up with only being able to buy the album?! You'd (itunes) would make more money selling the singles instead of everyone boycotting having to buy the entire album- you lost my sale too!
Booooooo! It's a real bummer to have to get lumped into a whole album for one or two good songs. I thought iTunes was supposed to be a good alternative to buying compact discs, but I guess maybe you guys are just going to be an internet Wal-Mart. Just sayin...
The music clips from Harry Canyon, plus the longer pieces from Den and Tarna, are missing. Just about everthing that is on the album can be picked up somewhere else (if not all of it). How useless. At least the album honestly avoids calling itself a soundtrack and instead just uses, "Music from the motion picture."
I remember watching the movie when it came out in '81 and the new one. I'm glad this cd is out, but I would like to buy a couple of the song individual. Overall it's about time this came out.
BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care that its album only - all of the songs are simply amazing (except for maybe True Combanion). You will not regret this decision, trust me. If itunes ever decides to make this not album only, i would highly recommend buying Veterans of the Psychic Wars and Heavy Metal (Takin' a ride). I also want to say that even though the title is heavy metal, by today's standards these songs probably wont be considered metal. The movie was made in the early eighties when metal was initially being created, so the majority of the songs are of the early sound of metal.
??? Are you kidding??? How can you have an album be metal if Journey is on it?
Why force people to buy the album instead of letting people buy the individual song? I would buy several on this album but I do not want to purchase the whole thing. This is really stupid on Itunes part.
This movie and the sound track were well ahead of their time...too many hits to pass up.. It was filled with some hard rock which at that time was considered heavy metal music by critics. I just enjoy all of the songs...
Epic movie
Album Only!!! Now I understand why other websites are beginning to take over Itunes...... Very sad. I agree with the capitalism comment. Tried individual artists also, couldn't find the only song I wanted Heavy Metal by Don Felder.
This really is a great album, may not be heavy metal (excuse the pun) but a great rockin' album. Mob rules
I have owned this soundtrack in the following formats: LP (that's long play, vinyl, original 2 record set, with 4 songs per side), cassette (ugh), cd (good stuff) and now MP3, AAM, or whatever musical file this is...I call it digital. For what its worth, I've worn them all out, save the digital versions. At times, it's been a struggle to find it in the current format, but I always searched it out. Because of all my 80's music, this soundtrack is the one I loved the most. At times, it hits hard, such as Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules". At times, it hits softly, such as the tired "Open Arms", or better, "Blue Lamp". But overall it rocks, with tracks that will test your headphones with stereophonic sound. Younger generations may balk at Cheap Trick and Nazareth (OMG theyre old lol), but this was done at their height, and the result is nothing less than phenominal. I was 13 when the movie came out...I wasn't allowed to see it (rated R). But I heard it, and I've been listening to the music since then. If I have my way, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" will be played at my wake.
I saw the film when it came out. I was 16 as was the buddy that went with me. This was back in the day of YOU MUT BE 18 YEARS OLD OR ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN TO VIEW THIS PICTURE. Neither of us were and so we had to beg our way in...both of us being fans of the 'zine and the soundtrack performers. I wasn't truly prepared for what I was goning to see. What an awesome film...and what an OUTSTANDING soundtrack. I bought the s-track the next day...on 8-TRACK!!! and played it to death...at 16, THe Mob Rules was great parental rebellion music! It's nice to see that album here and at a descent price. So many great artists and good tunesa here...Black Sabbath, BOC, Cheap Trick (with some real gems), Danold Fagen, Stevie Nicks, Don Felder, et al!!! I'm happy to get an opportunity to relieve this album and turn it on to anouther generation. Cheers, and hand me that Loknar you b&@tch!
so many of the reviews are about not getting to download one song and not about why it so cool that this album was included here. The fact that as old as it is it still stands up well as a whole is a testinment to the producers and arangement as well as the artist. Yes there are some songs that are a bit of an aquired taste but those are far and few between. So buy this already and if you stop whining about the album only thing you might enjoy a classic.
This is by far one of the best soundtracks ever! My favorite tracks are "Open Arms" and "I Must Be Dreamin." The makers of the film really knew what they were doing! Congrats to all involded with this project.
I remember the adverts, and waitin' in line, then the dark before the Storm!!!!! This for my generation was the Apex of Animation and Music. I chose Heavy Metal the music and the Movie. I'm Black and back in the day unfortumately, music listeners were segregated as much as race! But for me, The Movie Heavy Metal with its music, broke the boundry and cram an earful up my Wazoo!! I'm 54 going on 55 and still fondly remember the heady days before MTV --- Heavy Metal Live on in what form you take, wether Album, ala carte or Movie *You can still take a ride..."
A great collection of artists before they were big and sold out (like Journey) and not only that its a great soundtrack to the movie. The movie you say? Well assuming you arent a 20 year old punk that grew up watching animation like CARS or ToY STORY then this movie WAS the pinnacle of animation for its time, and rated R and a real eye opener for young kids like me that saw it in theatres. This whole album just rocks, even for tracks like the Donald Fagen tune (you might know him from Steely Dan or maybe not if you are one of the idiots complaining about having to buy the whole album) it just flows from one song after another. Who can forget the scene in the movie with Mob Rules jamming in the background. BUY THE ALBUM
This is an amazing album. I have been listening to it since I was a child. This is a great album, you can't ruin it by just getting one or two. It's the kind you put on shuffle and just enjoy. So all you below me stop complaining and become a heavy metal fan.
Great to have the opportunity to download two tunes from Riggs - a phenomenal band with a great debut (and unfortunately final) full-length album available I think only on vinyl. Would love to see itunes get ahold of those songs. It's a shame those guys never got the airplay they deserved, although Jerry Riggs later played alongside Pat Travers for a decade and the other guitarist Jeremy Graf surfaced with the Georgia Satellites and others. Riggs was an excellent songwriter in addition to a tremendous guitar talent.
After a number of pleas sent from the iTunes Request page, the Heavy Metal soundtrack has finally arrived. Though I'm totally bummed that the album isn't being offered a-la-carte. All I really wanted was Sammy Hagar's Heavy Metal, Cheap Tricks' Reach Out and Don Felder's Heavy Metal (Take a Ride). That's capitalism for yah.
Couldn't you just make it so I can buy a song with out the whole album? It disappoints me to figure out that "heavy metal (takin' a ride)" has one purchase option and that is to buy the whole album! I like that song so much, and I would buy the whole album too...if I had the money. I am a teenager and I'm dead broke. I'm not going to go all the way out to the "best buy" or an "apple store" just so I can pay them ten dollars come back home and waste most of that on songs that I don't care to buy. To much work! I am nor satisfied with this "album only" thing. I am 13 and I have more common sense than iTunes !
