I have NEVER heard a better singer/songwriter in my LIFE. She has the most incredible voice, and her lyrics make you feel her emotions. Her live shows are a must see!
Great Album. Definately not a let down.
This album is incredible, amazing depth and soul. However, if you get a chance to see these folks live, go for it -- they are simply amazing, and her voice is so powerful. I have to say that I perfer many of these songs (particularly Dying Day,) in their live form as her vocals are much more visceral in person.
i dont know much about production in music but i dont hear how brandi's voice comes out fully. it sounds muffled here to me and its disappointing. the band and songs are great as usual but - boi- i just heard them live again and im listening to ghost but wishing it was a live recording of ANY of their shows for better sound quality. small disappointment in a great album.
This year I was dancing on a cruise ship and the ship got charted out for a week with nothing but these amazing singers. I finally got to hear Brandi. She is by far one of my favorite artists. She's one of those singers that you hear live and when you hear it on the album it sounds the same. Her voice takes me to great places:)
another brilliant album from an amazing artist. one of the few people that i can honestly say sounds better live than on a recording. buy the album...then buy the rest of her albums....then go see her live. prepare to be blown away.
I don't even have to bother to hear any of the tracks when Brandi Carlile releases a new album. That voice is all I need and this Give UP The Ghost is yet another amazing album from this incredible artist. If you get a chance, see her live. It will be an evening you will not forget and you'll want to go back over and over like I do. She played a small club in LA called Largo, an all acoustic presentation of the new album and now I have even more to hold onto. Buy this now! Brandi Carlile is oddly, although she travels within the circles, almost immune to the trappings of stardom. Her preformances have a down home feel that make you feel welcome from the first few versus.
I heard Brandi first sing live at a small venue in Atlanta and the first time I heard that voice I was stunned. There is no one like her today. Her albums are all worth getting and unlike most artists today she sounds more amazing live. A true musical treasure. Her range and versatility are unmatched for any other female artist topping iTunes charts. It is a shame that bubble gum pop takes center stage while artists of her caliber go somewhat unrecognized. I hope she releases a live version of Pride and Joy because it is much more emotional and longer performed live. Hey Brandi, please release your performance with the Seattle Symphony!!! Your fans would love to have it and would most certainly pay top dollar for it to benefit your Looking Out Foundation. Also be sure to check out artists with whom she sings on albums that may not be shown here. Her backing vocals and duets with Gregory Alan Isakov on his album This Empty Northern Hemisphere are beautiful. I saw him live last night in Atlanta and his is a truly gifted artist in his own right.
...what a talent, written and sung ...b r i l l i a n t l y
BRANDI CARLILE is currently one of my favorite singer/songwriters on the scene... GIVE UP THE GHOST is a flawless record in my opinion. It has heart, soul, and honesty wired into the lyrics.... and melodies steeped in classic American Folk Rock.............. You can't go wrong here!
When Brandi Carlile first came on the scene and when she released her debut album I thought Carlile had an oppurtunity to make some noise. Well after listening to "GIve up the Ghost" I was automatically hooked to her voice. This album shows off Carlisle amazing vocal range and incredible songwriting abilitlity. I hope this album sells a lot and Brandi Carlisle gets nominated for best new artist at the Grammy's next year. The song "dreams" has a great chorus and reminds me of old fleetwood mac and Indigo girls. This album is a great mix of slower ballads and faster tunes with Chad Smith from RHCP on drums. Rick Ruben did a great as producer the band fit in great with her amazing voice. This is a major breakthrough for Brandi Carlile.
I had my doubt about this album before it came out for some reason. But now I'm glad it proved me wrong. This album is a classic and everyone who appreciate music and lyrics must have this album. The album starts with one of the best tracks on the cd - Looking out, then moves calm more relaxing music in such as Pride and Joy, If it Breaks and more. I think this album has more personal for Brandi. Thank you Brandi for this masterpiece. I hope other mainstream so called artists listen to this album and figure out what music is all about.
Finally, the album is available and damn its good! Loved Dying Day, Dreams and That Year live, its so good to be able to hear again on demand. See you all in Denver.
I should start off my saying that I was immediately partial to this album and to Brandi. I've been to her show, talked with her, and she is my favorite artist of all time. I'm 16 and although these songs aren't really targeted to my age group, they still struck a chord in the depths and unsung melodies of my soul. The first time I heard "Before it Breaks", my eyes filled to the brim with tears. I'm not even joking, the song is that haunting and beautiful. "Caroline" is fun, upbeat and everytime I hear it I smile and wish I knew someone names Caroline to sing about. "Touching the Ground" and "If There Was No You" are both sweet songs with lots to say in such concise melodies. The former has a little more heartbreak intertwined, but for me, that's okay. If you want songs with lyrics so rich with emotions (some of which you didn't even know you possessed), choose Brandi. If you want a voice that's rough around the edges but nearly perfect everywhere inbetween, choose Brandi. If know what great music, writing, And talent is all about, choose Brandi.
This is an amazing album!!! Her music just seems to get better and better!!!
Brandi Carlile is simply amazing. This is her third CD, and while The Story is my personal favorite, this CD is quickly growing on me! "Dying Day" and "Dreams" are my favorite! Definitely worth $9.99!
On first listen, this is a good album, with some definite gems (such as "Dreams" and "Before It Breaks") but, overall, a tad uneven. Even so, I count myself among Brandi's fans, having just seen her put on a dynamite show at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, MA. As many have suggested in the comments here, Brandi and the twins are well worth seeing live and can rock with the best of them. (I think Johnny Cash would agree.) I look forward to her continuing evolution as an artist.
Great album! Where are the liner notes?
Been a fan for about two years now. Love the first two records. Give up the Ghost is really a great record. Every song is strong. Just saw her in Philly and the show was amazing! Best vocal performance I have every seen in the hundrads of shows I've been too. Brandi just continues to amaze me! Keep it up Brandi, you are a very special artist!
i <3 brandi's new album!!!!!!!! i could listen to it all day!!!!!!! its SOOOOOO good, i think 1 of her best yet!!!!!!!!
Her best work yet!
The only thing better than this CD is seeing her live. Her music is refreshing and heartfelt.
Having seen Brandi live at the Aggie venue and then again at Chautauqua. Brandi knows how to light the room!! Every album is worth it's price! Excellent range! Must see her in person.
(Sigh)... Brandi, you make my heart throb. This album has been so satisfying to me. I have listened to it over and over again. Brandi's storytelling coupled with the feeling and emotion she sings with, in my opinion makes her one of the best artists of her genre. Sure you have other artists who deliver some catchy tunes such as Colbie Cailat or A Fine Frenzy. They sing, play an insturment, give you a smile. But none deliver with the sheer conviction and raw emotion that Brandi Carlile evokes. I nearly cried when I first listened to the song "Before It Breaks". My favorites on this album are: "Dying Day", "Dreams", "That Year", "Caroline", "Before It Breaks", and "If There Was No You". One song that I was really looking forward to, but was disappointed with was "Pride and Joy". It is the one weak part of the album. It is sung much different here than it was originally preformed. They slowed it down alot, and Brandi lingers on words longer than she used to. I still like the song, but knowing what it was I feel let down. I hope that she will release the demo. If you want to look up the original feel free to online. It is very easy to find. I really enjoyed "Caroline". Elton John added to it in a way that I didn't expect. All in all, This album is top notch work. Buy it. You won't regret it.
Strong voice, energetic delivery, kind of over the top though.
Wow. Makes me proud to be from Seattle. Brandi is right up there with Heart & Jimmy. Can't wair to see here live. " Give up the Ghost is a must for any one who lives music.
Received this album from One2One network, and couldn't wait to listen to it! Was a little put-off at first, because I thought it sounded REALLY country, but after listening to it more, it definitely grew on me. Her voice has a raspy, haunting quality that seems very natural and unforced. I especially like Dreams and Before it Breaks. I have a strong feeling that Brandi Carlile will be a household name in the near future!
Great album... Every song... And the twins sound great also!
I love Brandi Carlile so much that I actually pre-ordered the vinyl edition of this album and then bought the CD version on the day it was released. I'm happy to say that all that money was definitely well spent. In my opinion, "Give up the Ghost" is Carlile's strongest record. My personal favorite is "Before it Breaks," but I also love "Pride and Joy," "That Year," and "Dreams." The only slight disappointment is the closer "Oh Dear." I love the Twins, but their backing vocals distract me and take away from the simplicity of the song. Guest vocalists include Amy Ray (Indigo Girls) and Elton John, and I'm really not sure how anyone could top that. Ray's voice has always blended well with Carlile's, so it's no surprise that "Looking Out" is one of the best songs on the album. I have never seen Carlile in concert, but I've heard that she puts on an amazing show. My "Give up the Ghost" record arrived in the mail on the day that I went to see the Indigo Girls in concert, so maybe that was a sign. Even if it isn't, I will at least be able to enjoy eleven new songs from one of the best singer/songwriters out there.
I love Brandi but in this album I miss the rawness that your find in songs like my song, my story and the older albums. That rawness mixed with her clear voice is what really made the songs for me.
Phenomenal talent pours through this album. I was never a Brandi Carlile listener before. I am one now. This woman has chops galore. "That Year," reportedly a song about the long ago suicide of a high school friend, gives goosebumps while it builds to a final aching mea culpa. Her lyrics capture the ambivalence of human emotion, the push-pull of love, while her music takes it right into your soul. Amazing work. Some of it will likely wind up as background on Grey's Anatomy perhaps, but it's so much bigger than that.
Thank you for not being another pop music hack. This is quite enjoyable, very well performed. Excellent voice.
Flipping through these songs is a thrill! I am reminded of an amazing concert performance, wherein these songs--at least the ones from the set list--sounded even better than they do recorded, if it's imaginable;). So much talent, it gives me chills.
This is not a repeat of The Story. Not nearly as many arpeggiated electric guitars holding the songs together. The album is driven by frantic acoustic strumming, but it works perfectly. Brandi Carlile channels Johnny Cash more than ever. A great next step for this artist.
Cd is excellent. ALL of her cds are amazing, and I highly recommend adding them to your collection as well. Brandi and her band are by far, the best I've heard in a very long time. See her live, you will NOT regret it!
Just when you thought the age of the singer/songwriter was dead . .Brandi Carlile releases a CD that knocks your socks off. Continuing the trend of excellent songwriting "Give up the Ghost" picks up perfectily where "The Story" left off, and takes your mind away from the daily grind to a better place. This album is amazing, and deserves every bit of praise it is recieving. Keep up the good work Brandi, and thank you!
Brandi Carlile has such an amazing voice – almost haunting. This new album is very moving and a great mix of music. Some of my favorite songs on the album are “Looking Out”, “Dying Day” and “Dreams”. Her style is truly unique with a blend of folk, pop, and a dash of country. “Caroline” is a perfect example of a song with a style that is reminiscent of older music with a new twist. It is refreshing to hear such talent across the board – wonderful voice, great (and unique) instrumentals, as well as beautiful and meaningful lyrics. Giving up the Ghost is a great album and follow-up to The Story.
Amazing songs. Beautifully preformed. This one is a must have.
I recently was lucky to hear Brandi Carlile and her band play live and she sang most of the songs on this album. It was amazing! There was not one song I didn't like. Brandi Carlile is genuine and a her music is timeless. All her albums are worth buying and listening to over and over again!
Anyone out there have her title We're Growing Up or Live at Neumo's?
The best singer-songwriter I've heard in many years.
As soon as you hear Brandi's voice, you find yourself mesmerized by her ability to sing you a llulaby and then magically wake you up with a sudden burst of passion. The first time I heard her voice was in "The Story." With "Give Up The Ghost," she has once again mastered the beauty of the human voice. Recently, I saw her at The Fillmore in San Francisco and it was one of the best concerts I have ever experienced. There is no one to compare her to; she is Brandi Carlile.
I've got tickets to see Brandi at Seattle's Paramount, 10/24. Also, she's be my twice as nice artist again on the Cayamo Singer Songwriter cruise in February. I like the second major release from this young woman, wiser than her years from Seattle's suburb of Maple Valley. Yes, that is Sir Elton John dong the piano on "Caroline." The twins Hanseroth, brothers serve as bookends, harmonies, back up vocal and collaborators to the Brandi enterprise. Note to Ms. Carlile--elevate these guys stars as you do yours and DIVA should not be a destination. I think "Dreams" will be the big pop hit from the album. After many concerts attended, it is like being a proud towny or distant parent to see Brandi's stage presence come into its own. You join a long list of remarkable Seattle artists: Jimi, Quincy, Curt, Sir Mix, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Merilee Rush, Heart Sisters, The Wailers, Diane Schuur, Judy Collins, Ricky Lee Jones, Pat Wright, Isaac Scott, and those others still getting started, like "The Maldives."
After the glorious "The Story", i didn't know how she would follow up such an amazing record. But "Give Up the Ghost" manages to surpass it. Trying to pick faves on this disc is impossible, as it changes everytime i listen to it. Excellent songs, a voice that can move one to tears as she sings of love & heartache. Something we all can relate to. A must buy!
Saw her live at the Keswick Theater this week. Great performance live, had to buy the Album
1.) Looking Out-It's sung from the point of view of someone cheering up a friend after a breakup. It made me smile-7/10 2.) Dying Day-This one is too old-fashioned for me. It was just boring-3/10 3.) Pride and Joy-It hit me for some reason. I always have and always will love the emotion in her voice-7/10 4.) Dreams-I feel like this song would need some getting used to. It's hard to get-4/10 5.) That Year-This song is really beautiful-8/10 6.) Caroline-This song will make you happy. It's upbeat, hopeful, and a duet-8/10 7.) Before it Breaks-Another beautiful, haunting song-9/10 8.) I Will-After a while all of her songs start to blend together. It doesn't stand out-3/10 9.) If There Was No You-This song seems to trot along contently, and is my favorite on the album-10/10 10.) Touching the Ground-This song is a little wierd...I didn't really get it-2/10 11.) Oh Dear-It's very different, and interesting, and somehow familiar-5/10 12.) Before it Breaks (Live Acoustic)-There's something off about this. She missed the mark-6/10
I have all three of the band's albums and Give up the Ghost is the best one. The depth of the lyrics and the mucis is so inspiring. It is so obvious the band is coming together and feeling comfortable with who they are as musicians, so comfortable in fact that they are writing about personal things that they have not touched in the past. YOU HAVE TO GO SEE THEM LIVE!!! It will be the best live show you will see in your life. I tihnk she actually sounds better live than on CD. Just my opinion. what do you think?
She melodious and pleasant to hear. I think he has a great potential for success her in Europe. I'm writing from the west coast of Ireland and I would love to see her in concert.
I love allll the songs on the album! Really beautiful folky/rock sound to it, and her voice is just supurb! Reminds me of the past.
I saw Brandi in 2007 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, and of all the many concerts i have seen, it was the best. She has amazing musical depth, along with a beautiful and unique set of pipes. The twins add some fantastic harmony. At her show in SF, she played Dying Day and That Year, both of which I fell in love with and have wanted since that night. I'm so glad they're on the album.
