- The Best One

I have Octavarium, Images and Words, Systematic Chaos, and Metropolis Pt 2. Even with all the great albums DT has made, this one still stands out for me as their best. They pushed their sound to a place I never thought they'd be able to go, and they did it so perfectly. While DT's style really never stays the same from one album to the next, this album while heavier and darker still retains everything we all know and love them for, and outdoes any other band's attempt to write music of this style. Buy it immediately.

- Favorite Dream Theater Album

The first time I heard this album it blew me away, and it gets better every time I listen to it. Best songs are As I Am, This Dying Soul, Honor Thy Father, and the Instrumental Stream of Consciousness. This is definitely there heaviest and one of there best albums, this whole album is easily worth the money. James Labrie vocals are superb on every track especially Vacant, John Myung's bass playing is great as always, John Petrucci's guitar work and fast solos are amazing, Mike Portnoy's druming is excellent and he is definitely one of the best drummers I have heard, and finally Jordan Rudess's keyboarding was good but could have been used more, but he is still a really good keyboardist. If you are a fan of Progressive Metal, or just a fan of heavy music in general buy this album.

- YEAH!

yeah dream theater o yeah

- not their best, but still worth a listen

this is definitly very metal. I for one don't like to hear DT that way, so I did not enjoy this as much as much as the other ones. So, if you're like me, you won't enjoy this album as much as, for example, Octavarium.

- sick

with train of thought, dream theater delved into a new genre of metal, using straight, metallica esqe riffs, but sticking to their guns with amazing progressize arrangements. im not going to tell you the best songs, they are all equally amazing. just play the album through, and i garuntee that you will love every track

- In the Name of God buy this!

This is hands down my favorite album ever, not a single weak track or flaw. Some complain that this is too heavy but it really isn't. Every member really shines here, Petrucci gets a good amount of shredding in, not to mention great riffs. Portnoy continues to revolutionize drums, and even Myung snags a bit of the spotlight with a small solo in Stream of Consciousness and other very good parts. Rudess is amazing beyond belief, perhaps the most virtuosic member of the band! Even LaBrie, I'm sure everyones favorite does okay. The tracks: As I Am- great guitar work, considerably heavy but nothing you can't stand, after DT is half metal. Catchy chorus too. Dying Soul- my second favorite on the album, part of Portnoy's AA saga. Extremely catchy with amazing drums and guitar, listen to this over and over it never gets old. Endless Sacrifice- another highlight, once again a catchy chorus and guitar, and very deep lyrics. INstrumental part in the middle is amazing, omitting the somewhat annoying keyboard part, (you'll know what I mean) Honor thy father- can take a while to grow on you, but the drum solo kicking it off blows my mind, written by Portnoy about his step father whom apparently wasn't quite his role-model. great song Vacant-impressive considering its 3 minute long, listen to it a few times to get the meaning Stream of Consciousness- my absolute favorite song ever, worth the 10 bucks alone easily. while it is instrumental it...well you gotta listen to it, far to much to explain, brilliant musicianship Name of God- maybe my third favorite song, possibly the most interesting lyrics. Get the freakin album!

- It Really Got To Me

The lyrics in "This Dying Soul" really got to me. I mean, the song's about the Twelve Steps, but like when Portnoy was talking about him specifically, it sounded like what I had to go through. [ "Born into this world a broken home, surrounded by love yet all alone. Brought into a life split in two. Both your parents were pulling you] <--- something like that. So, TDS remains one of my favorite DT songs, but you know what, the album itself maybe the best DT album ever, it ties with MP2:SFAM, 6DoIT, and 8varium.

- Really good

It's not DT's best, but it is still a great album. It is a good change. It is more heavy (besides vacant) than the other albums. It has one of their best songs, As I Am, on it, which makes it even better. The songs are quite long (once again, besides vacant), but there are not many songs on the album, which is once again a good Change. Written By Kyle Productions :]

- My favorite DT Album

Ironically, this is the album that really pissed off alot of Dream Theater fans, who thought that Dream Theater was abandoning their Progressive roots. But I really enjoyed the visceral riffs and dark tones. Stream of Consciousness is a DT classic, and As I Am, Honor Thy Father are great songs too.

- All Aboard!

Train of Thought is a heavy, balls-to-the-wall rock/metal album from start to finish. As I Am: Best song on the album, period. Very groovy, very catchy, awesome riffs, awesome guitar/drum solos, just all-around perfect song. 5/5 This Dying Soul: Ehh... I like the first 5 minutes of it, but the rest just seems a bit bland. 2.5/5 Endless Sacrifice: An emotional ballad to John P's wife, long without seeming forced, incredible lyrics, and great solos. A must-have. 4.5/5 Honor thy Father: Excellent intro, one of the grooviest riffs I've ever heard, yet there's some awkward time changes. There's a cool rap-like part in it, and a instrumental part with voices. It's okay. 3.5/5 Vacant: Intro to Stream of Consciousness. Not worth it. 2/5 Stream of Consciousness: Catchy little instrumental song. Has several "phrases" and a great bass line a bit past the half-way mark. Cool, but there's better songs. 4/5 In the Name of God: A slap in the face to over-agressive Christians. Catchy riffs in the beginning, awesome unisons/solos with a "samba"-like bassline, cool piano ending. You should probably get it. 4/5

- Got it all!

One of the best DT albums to get if you like their metal side.AS I Am is brilliant, This Dying soul is part of Portnoys AA suite and Honor thy father blisters. In the name of God finishes this excellent album,It won't let you down 5 stars!!

- Speechless!!!

Soy the r's aent woking on my com that well but.. OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!! DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Jeez these guys can play. Deam Theates heavy metal is diffeent in the fact that they ae all musical geniouses. This is my favoite album fom them hands down. Mike Potony is pehaps the geatest drume I have eve head. Along with an amazing guitaists, billiant keyboad playe, and and incedible bassists, this may be the most musicly talented metal band (o any band fo that matte) on this Eath!!!

- A new sound

This is a very contravercial album among DT fans. It defenetly has a heavy dark touch but that makes it a still very satisfying album. The only track on this album i dont perticularly like is endless sacrifice. it seems like a really cheesy metal song. Vacant is one of the most beutiful songs ive ever heard and if ur not going to buy the whole album i would definetly suggest buying that one. I would have to say parts of stream of consciousness and honor thy father are my favorite tracks but this dying soul is also really cool in some parts. And obviously the solo in as i am is just insane. i would have to say buy this aalbum if ur a metal fan or a hardcore DT fan

- The New Dream Theater

This album is the end of the Transition that took place over "From a Memory", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", and (this one) "Train of Thought". During these three albums Dream Theater moved from mainly progressive rock to progressive metal. This stylistic change worked for the band, they have kept it through "Octavarium" and "Systematic Chaos". Here you will witness some great music. Every song is carefully crafted to create an auditory masterpiece. Dream Theater's "In the Name of God" is my favorite piece of theirs and probably one of their most powerful songs. Kudos to them.

- Good Motions, But They're Just Going Through Them

First off, let me be clear: aside from Rush, DT is about the only working band out there worth listening to or spending money on. That having been said, I find that this album and "Six Degrees..." are just about unlistenable. Of course the production and musicianship is, as alway, first rate, it just gets a bit monotonous after a while. Most of the songs don't even have a proper ending; they just STOP, as if the boys got stuck and couldn't figure out what to do next. And I don't particularly like the style they were stuck in at this point - if I wanted to hear warmed-over imitation Metallica, I'd buy the last Metallica album.

- wow

i dont understand why such a great rock band is so unheard of, no radio will play them and most dont know who they even are. But even if their not well known they still are one of the best bands to date.

- DT's Metal to Max!

New DT comers! If your into Mudvayne and Killswitch Engage, then you MUST buy this album. this CD is a little different then what DT has done in the past but it differs in a excellent way. Prog metal has never sound so much better. Mike Portnoy Kills on the drums: John Petrucci rips on guitar: John Myung booms on bass: and Jordan Rudess controls the keyboard. Don't care for the singing though.

- A Personal Favorite.

Fantastic. Really my favorite Dream Theater. Though it's not their best album, it's definitely my favorite. If you're new to Dream Theater, to truly understand their sound, I'd reccomend getting their masterpiece, "Scenes From a Memory" as well. This album really takes their darker, metal side, and brings it into sharp focus more than any other recording they've done. Phenomenal.

- There's a reason this whole album is on my playlist.

From the very beginning to the end, this album suceeded in amazing me. As I Am is a classic song with solos by Petrucci and Portnoy around, with a haunting intro. This Dying Soul is a continuation of Portnoy's AA suite, with many instrumental breakdowns. Endless Sacrifice takes a normal ballad and adds a twist only Dream Theater could deliver, a solo section with Petrucci and Rudess switching off solos. Honor Thy Father is heavy on the drums and is perfect for getting pumped. Vacant is a powerful ballad, even if of few words, can make a deep lasting impression. Stream of Consciousness is described as the "climax" of the album featuring amazing solos from each one of the members, without LaBrie of couse. In the Name of God is a song about the corrupt prophets of our society and delivers it's message through powerful riffs and complex phrasing. Overall, a great album for all Dream Theater fans alike.

- amazing

Amazing. Just seen them live, and they played As I Am. It was simple amazng

- Head Banging YEAH

dream theater at there best

- AWESOME JOB!

I really like Dream Theater and their music a whole bunch but for the love of god please I tunes why did you make almost the whole album album only songs, Hello, i want This dying soul without honor thy father but i can't have it because of what you did.

- Heavy Metal Masterpiece

This one is awesome. If you are into heavy metal, then this is a must for your collection. I wish they would do more like this one.

- Great Album

One of my favorite albums along with SDOIT, and Sytematic Chaos. Acutally anything post Rudess is freaking amazing. Dream Theater has to be one of the most awsome bands outhere right now. The album is probably DT heaviest out there, but its amazing. This Dying Soul is one of my favorite tracks of all time. The fact that you can only buy two songs without buying the album because the rest are over 10 minutes is pretty sweet. These guys can really play . . . ALL OF THEM!!! Buy this album even if you don't buy it from iTunes, it'll be worth your money.

- Great!

Mike Portnoy was starting to get a little tired of the usual stuff DT was writing, so he put in the works a sort of "Balls to the Wall" album. This is what came out. (It was written in only 3 weeks!) As I Am: Here's a song that could've been huge, if only Elektra wasn't too lazy to promote it. Very heavy, with a very melodic pre-chorus. One of Petrucci's best solos is here. However, it's lacking something that I just can't put my finger on. 4/5 Dying Soul: The 2nd part in Portnoy's AA saga, and my least favorite. Not much holds my interest, but the Glass Prison reprise is awesome. 3/5 Endless: A song about Petrucci's frustration at constantly being on tour, and not getting to see his wife. This song doesn't really fit together that well, and the instrumental section is a bit.. out of place, but neither of those stop it from being a solid song. 4/5 Honor Thy Father: Took me a while to get into, but now I realize.. this song just absolutely slays. Possibly the heaviest on here, and that's saying a lot. Awesome drum opening from Portnoy, great fingerboard solo from Rudess. 4.5/5 Vacant: A short (but sweet) ballad. It's a very sad song, and LaBrie's voice just sounds absolutely fantastic. The cello in the back adds to the emotion. 4/5 Stream: Perfect instrumental. So many cool riffs, so many cool solos... love the phrygian dominant stuff. 5/5 In the Name of God: This is one of the greatest prog metal masterpieces ever written. Another song written mainly in phrygian dominant. Starts off soft, then hits you hard, then ends very melodically. There's a section in the song where LaBrie's vocals are backed up by him screaming, which sounds great, and makes you feel like you were just hit with a truck. Actually, that's pretty much what the whole song makes me feel like. 5/5

- Such transcending talent!!!

DT is without a doubt, made up of some of the most talented musicians I have ever heard! I have yet to hear something by them which I didn't like. I love the strange time signatures, the solos, and an excellent lead singer to bring it all together! This is progressive metal at it's finest! I wish these guys would do some shows with Steve Vai!!!

- Honor Thy Father

The greatest Dream Theater Album. Honor thy Father, my favorite song ever. 1. As I am:great guitar solo in it, very catchy. great song. 2 This Dying Soul: Second song in Portnoys 12 part thing. Amazing instramentals. 3. Endless Sacrifice: A good way to slow it down and then still keep it hard in the chorus and the unstramentals. 4: Honor Thy Father: No Doubt The Greatest Dream Theater Song Ever. INsane Drum solo in the intro, Great musicianship and really keeping it heavy. Thank You Dream Theater For Writing This Song!!! 5: Vacant: Not the most exciting song ever, doesnt really fit this album, but some interesting music. 6: Stream Of Consciousness: Amazing instramental, i love how dream theater can put together an 11 minute song without lyrics. this is my favorite part of DT Intramentals. 7: In The Name Of God: Wow. I am in love, Great GRREAT SONG!!!! THe ending makes me insane it is so amazing!! but listin to the whole song. It is AMAZING!!!!

- METAL!!!!

This is absolutely DT's heaviest album. Dream Theater being the heaviest prog rock band out there. If you want to lose yourself in an imaginary mosh-pit (or a real one if your lucky) then GET THIS ALBUM!!!! METAL!!!!

- Dream Theater's heaviest.

This is more metal and less prog, but the songs are still insanely long and compex in a way that only the Theater can pull off. My second favorite DT album after Images and Words. "This Dying Soul" has one of the fastest-picked guitar solos I've ever heard (and it's done exceptionally well), and "Stream of Consciousness" is an 11-minute power-thrash instrumental that somehow never gets boring and repetitive. "Honor Thy Father" is the most pissed-off Dream Theater song I have heard.

- Progressive Metal's Peak

Dream Theater's best album (Train of Thought) has twice the agressiveness as Six Degrees and Octavarium put together. Portnoy's on Honor Thy Father and Petrucci's In The Name of God solo is enough to say Dream Theater are the founding fathers of progressive metal. If you are not a Dream Theater fan, buy it anyways - you will be listening to this album more than once, especially As I Am - this album turned me into a die-hard fanatic of DT.

- Awsome

This album shows DT's heavy side which I think sounds great. This was the first album I got by them and it's one of my favs (but doesn't beat images & words). Also, I think this is the only album DT has realeased that has some profanity (As I Am and Honor Thy Father). Heres what i think of the songs: As I Am: Frikin. Awesome. Solo. That's all there is to say (aside with the awesome riff). 8/10 This Dying Sould: 2nd song of the AA saga. I find it catchy even though it's over 11 minutes long. However, it doesn't beat the glass prison. 9/10 Endless Sarcrifice: Favorite song on the album. True, the beggining of the break is a bit out of place, but after that, it becomes incredeble. Petrucci and Rudess are....just listen to the song and you'll find out. 10/10 Honor Thy Father: Insane drum solo in the beggining of the song (we need more of those these days). Nice and heavy with some mild language. Can't say much of anything else though. 8/10 Vacant: Cello brings a nice sound to the music. This is one of those songs that you would have to listen several times to get the meaning. This song is also a perfect into to SoC. 6/10 Stream of Consciousness: This must be the world's best intrumental song ever. So many solos, so many riffs, you can't listen to this song and think that DT is not talented. 10/10 In the Name of God: Complex prog metal song. It slowly gets better as the song goes on and the ending is just...epic. Might need to listen to the song a couple of times though to get everything in your head though (like how Labrie screams in a section & the hymn at the end of the song). 10/10 EDIT: Yea...I kind of forgot grading vacant. BUT I added it =) Note: By now, you should have bought the album & you're now listening to As I Am.

- Train of Thought

Great album

- Heavy DT at its best; BUY THIS ALBUM

This is definitely the best album DT did with its heavier sound. "As I Am" 5/5, "This Dying Soul" 4/5, "Endless Sacrifice" 4/5, "Honor Thy Father" 3/5, "Vacant" failed to load on my computer, "Stream of Consciousness" 4/5, In The Name Of God 5/5

- Outraged

I can't believe almost every song on this album is "album-only."

- BEST DT ALBUM!!

Train Of Thought is Dream Theaters heaviest and darkest album yet and will succeed in drawing in more metal fans with songs like As I am and This Dying Soul. On the other hand the mood of this album is rather straight forward so don't look for a fairly light hearted song like Take the Time. Some DT fans might consider this too heavy but if your looking for heavy I highly reccomend this album especially if your a metal fan looking to branch out into some more progressive music.

- This album should be platinum.

I really like this album. All the songs are great, and very dark. This is Dream Theater's darkest album i believe. Especially the song As I Am. But they are all amazing. Rock on Dream Theater.

- great album

its a great even amazing album even though more than half of it is album only.

- TYPICAL DT, AMAZING

Another AMAZING album by another AMAZING band......this band needs something...hum wat is it?.....i know!!!.....another tour!!! because you are all just really good

- Sick

This is sick music. It should be illegal, how good this band is. Petrucci is the world's best guitar player, Rudess the world's best keyboardist, Portnoy the best drummer, LaBrie the best singer, and Myung the best bassist. Every musician is creative and intuitive, lyrical, and knows exactly how to play each song to make it what it is. LaBrie's singing just complements the whole album. This is my favorite Dream Theater album, and I hope they keep cranking out albums like this one. Good job to anyone who buys this album.

- Dream Theaters Best

Many people dislike this cd because its "too dark" sounding. Personally I think this is the best sound Dream Theater has come up with. If you only by one DT CD get this one. All songs (except vacant) are amazing. But the best songs are "As I Am" ,"Endless Scarifice", and "This Dying Soul"

- Another Dream Theater Masterpiece

Definitely one of my top two Dream Theater albums. Top songs: As I Am, This Dying Soul, and my favorite Dream Theater song, Stream of Conciousness.

- To Those Who Understand, To The Doubtful I Demand

"To those who understand" that this is a great album in which Dream Theater is simply trying something different, I extend my hand. "To the doubtful I demand", give this album a chance, even though Dream Theater is trying something different, it's still amazing. As I Am-kind of overrated, but still an awesome, heavy song 4/5 This Dying Sould-not only is it the best on the cd, it's one of DT's best ever 5/5 Endless Sacrifice-a pretty underrated song, I like it 5/5 Honor Thy Father-good song, doesn't stand out as much as some 4/5 Vacant-although it's short, it's meaningful, the vocals have a lot of expression 5/5 Stream of Consciousness-amazing instrumental, crazy ideas here! 5/5 In The Name of God-another awesome song 4/5

- Dream Theaters Heaviest

Never could figure out why Vacant is in there but other than that AMAZING ALBUM worth purchasing. Great for fans or people that like "Metal" some would say this isnt metal but i would say it is. This is defenitly Dream Theaters heaviest album so if you like softer stuff try Images and Words or Octavarium...

- GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!!!!

Awesome! If you are a fan of progressive metal, then this is the album for you! John Petrucci's playing nothing short of amazing and the rest of the band as well. Get this, you wont be sorry!!!

- Fantastic, the band and music triumph

Here it is everybody, a top progressive metal album of all time. while nobody seems to know about this CD, anyone who likes metal and has listened to this knows its glory. key tracks; honor thy father, stream of consciousness, as i am

- The Third Arrives

Train Of Thought is Dream Theater's third masterpiece (Images & Words and Awake are the others). DT is at their best when they are at their darkest.

- buy this album....it is the best one ever....!!!

This album is the best thing ever....there is a wide variety of music within it. There is the classic-dream theater edgy rock sound, the techno, and great guitar and drum solos. reccomended to everyone

- never loses its focus

musicians who fall under the category of "prog" tend to draw out songs without any particular direction. never dream theater though. their ambition and focus is always precise and sharp, and the same is true for train of thought. a lot of DT fans may not like it because of its rather "heavy" sound, but newer fans will attract to it like flies to a light. to me, its the perfect balance of epic writing and progressive rock/metal, combined with mean sounding guitars and pounding rhythms. Highly recommend.

- This Dying Soul

Itunes needs to make "This Dying Soul" available w/o buying the whole album.

- Their best album (IMO)

As I Am: Great opener, addicting chorus and a pretty fast solo 9/10 This Dying Soul: Insane song, the 1st 4 minutes pull you in like....WOW 9/10 Endless Sacrifice: This album has great intros, soft song that grows heavy, great vocals 9/10 Honor Thy Father: Favorite song, drum intro is BA, the 1st guitar solo is amazing. 10/10 Vacant: Shortest song that has only vocals and piano and it leads amzingly into the next song: 9/10 Stream Of Consciousness: The instrumental, amazing, keyboards a little over the top though >.< 8/10 In the Name of God: Great song overall, incredibly long song though 8/10 To me its the easiest album to listen to from them, album has the biggest number of over 10 minute songs, which is why there are only 7 songs. But along with Awake and Systematic Chaos, this album is the best.
