Endless Love by Luther Vandross & Mariah Carey Song Info
The president of Sony Music Entertainment, had suggested that Luther Vandross record Songs, a collection of cover songs. Mottola’s then-wife Mariah Carey suggested a duet cover of “Endless Love”, originally sung by Diana Ross and singer/songwriter Lionel Richie for the 1981 film of the same name. The song peaked at number 2 on the charts. It was the biggest pop hit for Vandross and the first top 10 songwriting hit for Richie in 7 years. It remained in the top forty for 13 weeks, and was ranked number 56 on the Hot 100 1994 year-end charts. Despite the success, most critics characterized the version as sappy and superfluous.
