I must confess that this album sounds fantastic! Great songs, great singer, great great great! If you like a well mixed playlist you should also put some chillout music on it. You find it on "Cozy Nights"!
I am 19 years old and i enjoy the sound of raphael saadiqs music. the music of today is pure noise. we should want to resort back to those days when music was good and not about degrading our women, drug use and sex. this is good music.
I'm a sucker for old-school Motown, and I love that Saadiq stayed with this retro-soul sound... it picks right up where "The Way I See It" left off... I mean, why fix something that's not broke?
If SADIQQ sang la la la, I'd love and support, his sound is so unique it feels good to not have to listen to all the copycat HITKILLERS who are out now. When you hear his voice you don't have to ask WHO MADE THAT? Can't say that ALOT these days!
It sounds like the album before it. I love Raf, he is always evolving but not so much here. :(
This album is like a breath of fresh air amidst all of this r&b-pop fusion trend going on nowadays. it has that motown feel to it so it feels familiar yet new at the same time. I especially love "good Man" but each song tells a story. I respect that he is going agaisnt the norm rigt now. He definitely succeeds with providing us with good music, good vocals, good beats, etc.. .
Raphael Saadiq at his finest. Another classic album!
I love this album ray!!! every song is great!! A+++
A reminder of some of the best R&B of the past with a new feel. Those that aren't feeling this need to listen to some 60s Motown , Stax , and Chess music. Even early Prince, for example "When you were mine". Raphael is a underrated innovator. The difference here with most R&B of today is this music is timeless. Real music with real musicians and an orchestra. No samples!
Simply one of the strongest albums I've heard in years.......so refreshing to find an ALBUM you can't stop wanting to hear.
Come on Raphael!!! This has already been done. I'm ok with a sound that reminds me of old school but it can't be so old school that it doesn't sound new and fresh. Enough! This is a waste of talent. I'm so saddened by this effort.
It saddens me that one of the greatest artists I have ever heard is reduced to copying the 60's musical format. I let this go on the last album, but two in a row? Far be it from me to tell an artist what to create - and don't get me wrong, the usual Saadiq quality is there. I'd just like to see him do something new. The game needs Raphael to blaze trails with new music - not repeat what's already been done. We all know the 60's produced some of the greatest music we've ever heard, but what about this decade? To be in the position that he is in (signed to a major label with marketing), he should be innovating, not imitating. There is better new music (that nobody is hearing) on the indie circuit - where they don't have the benefit of marketing dollars and front-line positioning on iTunes. Again, this is not disrespect - I love Saadiq's music - the man has a gift. But he's not using it right now. Download "Stone Rollin", skip the rest.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!
thats the problem, this is funk, old school funk, which wasn't broke. its been done, yea, so what, keep it coming
I do love when artist re-create the sounds of the 50s on up so for Raphael to do it again was cool. But, I can't say that I was feeling all of the snippets. Maybe it is just me wanting the instrumentals to just amaze me, but the songs were not challenging enough for me. A couple of songs made left me looking for it to build on to the next song...but it let me down. Sure, I would buy it in support of what he is doing, but it wouldn't be worth the investment if you want something to hold you for a long time. "Like I See It" is better to me than this.
Saadiq, what can I say? I'm a lost fan. We should be hearing the future of the funk but instead we are listening to music moving backwards. There was a time for artist in that era of yester year...they had there time and now we should have ours. Bring back the funk Raphael, please!!!!
"Go to He'll" single is reaching back to give this new generation something to meditate on...Awesome album!!!
Saadiq is a talented cat, but I wasn't looking for another album that sounded like his last one. It's a formula/sound many artists have dipped into lately (Cee Lo, R. Kelly), but I wanted Saadiq to come with more of a head-bobbin', funky baseline, strong groove type of album. This one didn't jive with me this go 'round.
Enjoyable ,soulful retro that speaks to the current joe's condition.I will admit it isn't my fav of Raphaels work but the album works tough enough for the everyday everybody.
I love this album!! I am a sucker for good soul/funk music and Saadiq definitely delivered. I love the sexy funky bluesy Stone Rollin....highly recommend this album
Wow. I'm walking down a sunbaked sidewalk circa 68'. Past the delicatessen, the bodega and the pizzeria. The fire department has opened a hydrant and the little ones run and scream through the brilliant spray of water. Everyone has their windows wide open with their transistor radios perched on the sill and in a subconscious sign of unity they are all tuned to the same Top 40 station. The latest groove from Stevie, Marvin and the Isley's pump against the languid, heavy air and bounce freely off of the building facades. I lap furiously against relentlessness of the heat as it assaults my cherry popsicle. Thank you, Raphael, for allowing me this wonderful journey into the past. The music is fresh and transformative and thrilling. A tremendous blend of all of those groundbreaking sounds that are forever fixed in the 60's.
This is his best work ever. Every song. Even the song writing has improved (his only weakness). I'm left speechless. Goodbye.
You lost me on this and your last album Raphael, sorry! Please please bring back that 'Instant Vintage' Lucy Pearl, Tony Toni Tone' vibe.
Fantastic all the way through
Will not make the same mistake for a second time. Raphael, your to good a talent to be stuck in a time warp. It's already been done. Go back to your Oakland roots and make some good R&B music.
Good Man blew me away. This is takin it way back, but well written ;)
WOW! I had heard of this guy in the past, but when I saw him playing with Mick Jagger @ the last Grammys on that tribute to Solomon Burke-"Everybody Needs Somebody To Love"-I was really taken. Just listening to the clips before buying the album has me hooked. A truly great LP. A wonderful hidden track after "The Answer" with Larry Graham. I believe that it's titled "The Perfect Storm" One of the years best-so far. Did someone screw up on the track 9's listing-is it not Yukimi NAGANO and not NAKANO? Isn't Yukimi NAGANO from Little Dragon?
I can dig this type of music but I do have to agree with neosation's comment. It's far easier to imitate than create. Meaning this style has already been done - there's a whole era of this music to appreciate or, in Saadiq's case, imitate. My challenge to Saadiq is to make music that makes us feel the same way the old school music did but make it even better. You can stay true to the funk and the old school format while modernizing the music for our generation and his own as is evident in R. Kelly's latest work.
Great album. So what if it sounds like it's from the 60's...it's solid and smooth. Besides, if you really listen this album contains some subtle modern polishes here and there. This is one you can press play and not have to worry about skipping tracks. Download it now!
Love it!!!
Let's get GOOD music back on the radio.
On "Stone Rollin", Raphael continues build upon the retro sound that has been part of his "M.O." since his days with Tony! Toni! Tone! and that was executed to perfection on "The Way I See It". While not quite as solid as that album, "Stone Rollin" is actually more daring as it incorporates elements of surf music ("Radio") and rockabilly ("Day Dreams") into the mix of Motown, Stax and Philly soul influenced songs. The best songs are the bluesy title cut, "Movin' Down the Line" (which would be "at home" on Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" album), "Just Don't" (which sounds like 60's Stevie Wonder), and "Heart Attack" (which sounds like something Wilson Pickett might have recorded during his days with Atlantic). I also liked "The Answer" , which is really two very different songs separated by a legthy gap (the second half of the song has a strong Sly and the Family Stone feel and features Larry Graham, and "Go to Hell". My only issues with "Stone Rollin"" are its length (less than 50 minutes) and the vocals are occasionally murky, although I suspect that this may be due to Raphael's desire to have an authentic 60's sound. While I know that "Stone Rollin'" will have its detractors who want Saadiq to return to a more contemporary sound, this is clearly one of the best releases of 2011 and I am confident that it will be in the running for end of the year honors. (4.5/5.0)
I heard a couple of tracks on Vh1 show called love and hip hop. I feel in love with his song called good man and another track called over. I think this album is what we needed to bring some good harmony back into our life.
