City sidewalks busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air
There's a feeling
Of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear

She can sing and make people laugh! She's pretty too! what else could you ask for! you go girl!! great abulm
Simply just Matt playing guitar and Zooey singing classical Christmas tunes. It's a great album for the holidays.
I honestly love Zooey in so many different contexts, but compared to previous efforts, this album feels like it was thrown together haphazardly and without any, well...holiday cheer. I wish I had sampled more of the album before buying. This collection isn't horrible--there are most of your typical traditional holiday songs. But it lacked a Christmassy sense of good tidings of great joy. Her voice sounds hesitant in most songs, and most of the instrumentals sounded even more forced than her singing. All this adds up to (as many reviewers have pointed out) a really depressing feel to the album. You can almost imagine it being eerily played in an abandoned mall in a horror movie or something.
I love the album! The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the fact that alot of the songs sounded the exact same. Some didn't really stand out too much in my mind... maybe a little more vocal range? Idk. But, they did justice to the originals! They give alot of the songs a 50's rock-n-roll treatment, while others had a nice, smooth jazz feel. All in all, a very good Christmas record!
Enough said
I often enjoy She & Him's work, but this album, on the whole, presents a very mellow take on Christmas tunes. Maybe too mellow in some cases. It's not a bad Christmas album, but it has a tone that is lacking some energy or brightness (maybe on purpose; think snowed-in or a tinge of seasonal affective disorder) that some listeners might expect. Sample the whole thing first.
I very much enjoyed the simplistic, stripped-down feel of this album. The purpose of taking away all the brass and "hodge podge" is to delve into the real Christmas. Listen to the words and you need not worry about some flashy jingle bells.
Can't go wrong with this album. It's timeless, classic, perfect addition to my Christmas music collection.
The title says it all. You will not regret getting this album!
I love Zooey Deschanel. Her voice is so soothing. It is the perfect "Christmas Song" voice. I fell in love after the first 30 seconds of this album. Exactly how a Christmas album should sound.
I try to get one new Christmas album each holiday season. This year it was A Very She & Him Christmas. It was the best choice ever! I love everything about it and have zero complaints. It's probably even the best album they have released so far!
If you prefer you rock on the indie side and your Christmas music a little more traditional, this is the perfect cd for you. Zooey & Matt are awesome and with all due respect to Michael Buble, this is the best Christmas CD release this year!
I totally get the retro "spin" on the album, but M. Ward tried way too hard. The result was a very rough sound and awkward vocals. Zooey has an adorable voice and these tunes should glow very easily, but the album is just to "living room studio" and choppy for me. Darn, I really wanted to like it.
Wow, I love Zooey Deschanel, and she has such a beautiful voice. I REALLY wanted to like this album, but it was terrible. I think she and "he" should just come clean and admit they got drunk one night and recorded this in their basement. Apparently they could only manage one instrument per song and seemed to have a bit of trouble maintaining the rhythm. Such a shame. I hope Zooey records another Christmas album in the future with a real jazz band and without "him".
I love this album. The only music my parents ever played when I was growing up was Christmas music. Old Christmas music. This Album suits me. It's cool and fun, but not poppy and over produced. I hope they make another one.
checking out Capturing Christmas by Fellowship Church!!!!!! they really did a great job keeping to the original sound of the Holiday favorites!! hands down now of of my favorite albums this season!! :) have a great day!
Where are the instruments?
Having worked retail during the xmas shopping season for years I had grown to "hate" Christmas music, the loud blaring pop-y versions seemed to take away all the charm Christmas music had. This is a nice throw back to "old school" Christmas music...granted that I kinda dig the "depressing" sound that a lot of other listeners complained about, I like how it wasnt thrown in my face that by listening to Christmas music I should "be cheery dammit"!! Some of the songs didn't seem like studio quality, as if recorded out in the garage or something but it was only one or two that seemed really noticable to me, didn't ruin the whole album to me as others had complained...overall I really enjoyed the album and if I were to have any complaint it would be "Baby, It's Cold Outside" sooo didn't like their version! and its my favorite Christmas song :- ( that did bum me out, but if they do another Christmas album hopefully they will re-do it.
What a great Christmas album! A nice twist on classic songs by such a solid duo.
absolutely amazing
Its kind of dreary. Some of the songs are pretty good like Have yourself a merry little christmas, and some of the songs are too fast like baby its cold outside. and its mostly dreary. but Zooey is a good singer. This album is meant to be background music at a christmas party. Overall its ok.
I love the sounds of Christmas! Some of the greatest melodies have partnered with lyrics like, "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire," or "City Sidewalks, busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style"; however, rarely are we treated to a refreshing spin on these traditional gems...that is until now! Whoda thunk it that Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Karen Carpenter, Zooey Dechanel and M. Ward would blend together like the batter of warm gingerbread cookies? "A Very She & Him Christmas" is a SLAM DUNK if you're looking to be cradled by an authentic, albeit sometimes quirky, interpretation of Christmas songs. Zooey Dechanel's delicious alto range is a perfect fit for this very intimate and inspired musical sleigh ride!
The best christmas CD ever! Can't stop listening!!! Love every song, Zooey is amazing!
These wonderful old classics require nuance, an understanding of phrasing and the ability to carry a tune. All are woefully absent from this halting, mechanical and very distracting collection, which has more errant sharps and flats than a road full of broken glass and punctured Pirellis. Sadly, the collection is also missing the elements of joy, warmth and heart that are so important in a holiday album. If you follow M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, you may have enough gas in the tank to enjoy what they have assembled, and forgive it's many distractions. To it's credit, the work is unique, and played in the background it may hold up, but the act of actually listening to this is very disappointing.
This album is great if your Christmas is spent all alone crying yourself to sleep! To depressing!
Songs from this album are played randomly on the playlist where I work, and I am beginning to emotionally fear them. The album sounds like they spent like two days working on it, and they probably did given how much other stuff "She" is involved with. I wonder if Zooey Deschanel ever herd of the term overexposer.
if you're planning on slitting your wrists this holiday season, you should totally do it to this album. REALLY depressing. Love she & him, but this went too over board with the melancholy for a xmas album.
Is this album a joke? Horrible singing. I can't tell if the high ratings are sarcastic or if they somehow like this really, bad album. It is so bad I thought it was comedy. You know, like a William Shatner thing(remember, if it's not a shat, it's not a hat!). oh well
Okay, so here is the deal. I'm warning you now, if you don't like acoustic music you will NOT like this album. Yes, it's not majorly overproduced but that's what makes it amazing. It's incredibly simple and when you sit down with a pair of good quality headphones and listen to it from start to finish, the songs are amazing. I don't know why people are giving this album bad reviews... She & Him stayed true to their unique sound and style. This will definitely be on my playlist this holiday season!! LOVE IT!
Iām really enjoying this album and Zooey Deschanelās marvelous voice. I love the peace and serenity She and Him elicit in this wonderful album. Thanks for the great Christmas album.
Gonna be listening to this all December everyday sleigh rise is AMAZING
This sounds like it was recorded in the sewer's of Paris, as there is way too much echo and reverb in the mixā¦but, if that's the sound they were searching for, then who are we to say ā¦?...Zooey's voice is not the issue and is quite pleasant and her intonation is very good. The guitarist has a jazz background and as far as the mood the album illicits is also a non-issue, for this is always a very subjective feeling/emotion/comment, and this is what music is supposed to do, to accomplish. And you are never going to please everyone who either hears this or purchases the album. I have heard much, much worse, as a musician for 30 + years, and I have had disasters happen both on the stage and in the studio. This is not a disaster and is quite pleasant to hear and as far as the money goes, when you purchase this album, these two musicians could never make up for what they have invested into their musical lives, as it is a constant, on-going struggle to keep your head above water, from a financial p.o.v. America is one of the few countries in which the musicians, such as Duke Ellington and Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Buddy Rich and so many more, that are not considered National Treasures and National Landmarks should be built in honor of all of these people named and so many more are deserving of this status. Only in America does this not happen and Europe looks at these people just as I mentioned, as National Treasures and are noted as such. Probably less than one tenth of one percent actually make big money from their musical careers. However, most musicians follow their dreams because of the inherent drive inside of them, as artists, who must play and produce and create music, as they know itā¦Not everyone plays great, many do not and a handful of them are thriving on their professionsā¦The long and short of this review is that I found this music and this album, quite pleasant and it does conjure up some nice thoughts about the holiday seasonā¦Yes, I will buy it, for sure and it is a way to show your support for the musicians & musicianship that we seek & we respect. Some of the songs sound rushed like baby its cold outside. I love anything with Zoey in it but I wasn't pleased with the strategie i guess like the timing. Her voice makes anything sound amazing.
This album was done really well, with just the perfect array of songs. The Album was fantastic!
How is Zooey so awesome? Great singer... girl next door... so mysteriously beautiful.
flat, with a practically dead accompanist.
This album has to be one of the most perfect recent Christmas albums around. Zooey Deschanel's voice paired with Matt Ward's guitar (and ukulele) makes for a really nice mellow chrismasy, eggnog-feel. The album is worth it's $9.99 for their take on the Beach Boys "Little Saint Nick" alone. The only thing I miss is a She & Him version of "Mele Kalikimaka". That would've been a perfect choice with the ukulele and all. Apart from that, it's a true gem!
Nice voices, no doubt. However, the arrangements sound like something that I'm imagining should be on a Lawrence Welk Show (never saw it). Kinda yawn music.
Don't listen to the people on here that complain it "sounds depressing" or "needs more M Ward". This album really is a beautiful work of art, and Zooey and Matthew deserve nothing but praise. What a few folks are considering "sad" is the overall tone of the album -- a light but thick acoustic feel with a touch of reverb and wood-like resonation. And this tone definitely compliments the traditional feel of Christmas music, and gives it a stronger, deeper touch to every note. For those who say it "needs more M Ward", be sure to note that this band is centered around Zooey. M Ward is only a sort of 'supporting character' in the scheme of things. If you want to hear more M Ward, LISTEN to M Ward. He's fantastic with and without Zooey. Trust me, buy this album.
I love that this album's sound is clear, simple and yet...different. It's got a retro sound and it's lovely. I'm sick of the same ole stuff and I definately hate the oldie Xmas music that wasn't in my generation to begin with. So I love this one!
This is not a typical Christmas album, which is not necessarily a bad thing. "A Very She & Him Christmas" has a serene and mellow feel to it, but not in the generic, soft jazz vein. It comes across as a couple of friends playing Christmas music for their own enjoyment rather than feeling overproduced or forced. While it is easy to understand why some people have referred to it as "depressing," it might better be described as somber--in places--not completely unlike the mood/tone set by some of the renowned works of Vince Guaraldi, specifically "Christmas Time is Here." In other places, it is sweet, lively and even romantic (see "The Christmas Waltz"). "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is more upbeat and festive, as expected, and "Baby It's Cold Outside" is flirty and playful with maybe just a pinch of kitsch thrown in. Of course, listeners' perspectives and opinions may differ based on what they expect the performers or the material to be. This is definitely a different kind of Christmas album, but one I found to be hauntingly beautiful and just want I needed this Christmas.
So, after I was dreading facing the busy season of Christmas, this album energized me and made me fall in love with the holidays again. Listen, enjoy, and dance!
Wonderfully Christmas album for unique interpertation. Fell in love with her singing in elf. Love she and me
Zooey D. I love yah and you have an AMAZING voice but something about the audio set up of these songs just isn't working for my ears. Very sad, I really wanted this to be a go to Christmas album in my queue! :(
I was very disappointed with this album. I was hoping it would be similar to her songs in Elf, which were so good. This album was just a disappointment all around. I do not like the way she changed the songs to be "her own." I am a huge fan of hers in her movies and on New Girl, but I expected more from this album.
I enjoy M Ward's writing and playing style--applied to timeless pop Christmas songs with darling little Zooey should be a no-brainer. Ward's guitars don't disappoint, and Zooey's voice is the best she has done, but this is a depressing collection. I was not expecting to find it all 'kitschy', but you would expect some fun by looking at the cover. From the very start, this collection never really lifts your holiday spirits. It reminds me of what I would listen to if I were alone every Christmas. I love She & Him, but this will not get spun every December.
This album is the perfect holiday album to be laying naked on a bear rug, in front of a roaring fire, with the one you love!
worst....christmas album......ever
I liked the Christmas album but I was a little disappointed with Baby, it's cold outside. Over all it is still lovely.
Sorry to be a downer, but this is just horrible. I can imagine hearing this stuff used to encourage confessions.
