Like many of the other reviewers have said the film soundtrack is far superior and if you are wanting to just hear the songs than please buy the original, especially for glen hansard's voice. Glen has way more passion in his voice and playing than the play does. The play's version of the songs are emotionless compared to glen and mar. I have seen the play and it's better than I expected but still there really is no comparison to the film or hearing the swell season live. The play is a poor mans once. I wish it was better since glen and mar helped work on the music. I think glen was right the first time when he didn't want the broadway play to be made, should have let it be.

These people have lovely voices but the original is so much more beautiful. I'm sure the Broadway show is great, but seriously, the original film's music is so much BETTER than this. Marketa and Glen have voices that are made for each other, they even make God jealous. This Broadway thing is only an imitation of the unaffected purity and soul of the original.

I really enjoyed the Irish film when I saw it a few months ago, and I was very excited to learn that it's been taken to Broadway. Both this soundtrack and the original definitely worth listening to. The music is absolutely beautiful!

The simplicity of the set and talent of the small cast creates a greater connection with the audience that is utterly remarkable. i was touched by the performance and intend on seeing it again with hopes of holding back tears, yet i know ill be disappointed.

"Once" was a great movie, fueled by a powerful soundtrack, delivered brilliantly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who wrote the music they performed in the film. Bringing this movie to stage is a fantastic idea, however, the performances here are watered-down versions of the original film performances. Hansard and Irglová brought a gritty passion to their performances in the original film, while this soundtrack sounds safe and unemotional. While the Broadway show is probably worth seeing, I would recommend anyone who is interested in this soundtrack experience the original versions of these songs in the movie version.

The songs on here are very well done, and I'm sure the musical is very well done too. But the original album is the one worth getting. Glen and Marketa's voices are perfect for each other, and being the original writers, they exhude much more passion than this version. For example, this album's version of Say It To Me Now doesn't hold a candle to the original version. If you have to choose between this and the original, get the original.

While I know many people are critical of this soundtrack, I really enjoy it. As a huge fan of the movie, I believe you have to go into this with an open mind. If you do, you'll find that it is a very enjoyable take on the movie. It really is up to you to purchase the soundtrack and make your own opinion on it. Either way, it's still a worthwhile purchase.

Saw this show last week and it was amazing. Not only is the staging innovative and fresh but the collective talent of the actors who PLAY all the instruments themselves is impressive and emotionally engaging.

I'm not even going to touch on the fact that the stage version of this show apparently removes every bit of nuance and poise from a film that was almost pure, distilled subtlety. (This coming from a big fan of musical theatre) I'm just going to focus on the fact that this is essentially a cover album, where none of the covers come close to matching the quality of the original work. The songs on the first Swell Season album (as well as the soundtrack for the film) were written and performed by two musicians actually falling in love with each other while filming a movie about two musicians writing music and falling in love with each other. That really comes through in the original songs, and provides for not only one of the best albums of the last decades, but one of the most outstanding film soundtrack albums of all time. It's intimate, beautiful and heart-rending all at once. What this gives us, on the other hand, is a crass re-appropriation of those same songs by people thirty steps removed from the original. These versions are loud, over-annunciated parodies of the original songs, and just feel cold in comparison. This isn't an attack on the other people who have given the album 5-star reviews, either; I get why they gave the album glowing reviews, because they ARE beautiful songs. However, I can only assume that this is their first time experiencing them, and they don't know that they're listening to sub-par renditions. But don't just take my word for it: You can find the real songs (found either by "The Swell Season" or "Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova") on iTunes and see for yourself.

I really tried on this one but I just couldn't get past the fact that these songs didn't have the same passion as Glen Hansard had in the film. Glen Hansard's voice and playing was so passionate and raw and amazing in the film. These actors just sound bored. I'm disappointed.

I had the experience of seeing this show on Broadway, and it was absolutely wonderful. The actors had a sense of authenticity that I admired. The music was so beautiful! Definitely a great purchase.

I loved the movie, and the stage adaptation was brilliant. The cast is incredibly talented and it was an emotional rollercoaster- laughter and tears. The live performances are much more nuanced that the recorded version- but wonderful. It has been a very long time since I have seen such an explosive standing ovation the moments the lights dimmed. Great album!

These singers have good voices but buy the original. On the original soundtrack Glen and Marketa's vocals and emotion penetrate to your soul. Not taking away from the musical but you just cannot replicate or begin to cover such amazing songs in the first place. This version clearly lacks all the things that made the movie and original soundtrack unique.

Just saw this is New York on Broadway. Fantastic Unique show, with incredicle performances. Its a must see show. We came home and watched the movie, which was also quite good. But there is nothing like seeing the show live, and frankly, the music on broadway was superior.

I had the privilege of seeing this on broadway in December. I was worried considering how well put the movie was. I was in tears at the end of the show when the reprise of falling slowly was played. I wonder if they realize how big this musical is going to get. It was absolutely beautiful. Thank you.

i had the pleasure of catching this adaptation of the indie film at the new york theatre workshop and was deeply moved and blown away. i had liked the film, not loved, and was more interested in the details of what and how they chose to move it to stage than expecting it to be very successful. fortunately it is the rare (if ever?!) adaptation from screen to stage that rises above the original source material --due to the incredible creative team and also largely to the amazing leads. it's moved to broadway now --if you can, see it before either of them are replaced. they're terrific. i wept.

There is absolutely more to offer in the stage version, than in the stage version of this musical. I highly recommend seeing it and buying the soundtrack. It is beautiful. You won't regret it.

This was one of the best new musicals in a long time and is a real departure from standard musical theatre. The actors playing all the instruments themselves, gives it a real sense of authenticity. Simple, beautiful and touching from beginning to end.

Those people who are posting reviews about how this "pales in comparison to the movie" and that the movie is "by far greater" are only judging this version based on the soundtrack. You cannot truly judge this production unless you have seen it. I had the opportunity to this week and it absolutely blew me away. There is so much more feeling in it that you cannot necessarily hear in these tracks and that must be seen and felt. Please do not pass over this show without seeing it. It would be a dire mistake.

This is the most beautiful most revolutionary piece of theatre New York has ever seen. This is a perfect example of how a story can exist beautifully in more than one medium. This is its own piece and worth seeing month than once. Don't think, just buy this album and book your ticket, you won't regret it.

I was initial excited to see the soundtrack for Once being produced as a musical, that is until I heard the album. While the music is certainly worth listening to, the original motion picture soundtrack is many times better. Glen Hansard’s and Marketa Irglova’s original album is a monument to the genre. It shocked me when they won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Falling Slowly’. The original version of ‘Gold’ buy Interference is one of my favorite songs from the album. If you like this album, I strongly recommend you listen to the original motion picture sound track. This version is only a pail shadow.

If you're near New York, or can get to New York... GO SEE THIS SHOW, its INCREDIBLE... and "once" you've seen it, this soundtrack will be more poignant. --- I own both the movie version and the stage version.... the Stage Version is more emotionally MOVING and the story is better told... I felt for the characters in the theatrical version, ... where as in the cinematic version... it just left me not caring much at all. You'll want this soundtrack, ESPECIALLY if you see the show. This is some great work, and to see ALL of the musicians are actually a part of the story, actors, dancing and playing... it's a beautiful piece. Just do it!

best new musical on broadway!!

Loved, loved the movie and have the album...but after I saw the Broadway production @ Jacobs Theatre yesterday I am absolutely blown away. I was awestruck at the incredibly gifted actors/musicians showing what real talent is. The raw feel of the story is maintained - added is the beauty of each of the individuals musical talent - like nothing I have ever experienced on a stage before - 'orchestra' and actors are one in the same. The 'ballet of holding' touched my heart - thank you for that. You need to experience the A capella version of "Gold" in the theatre. The actors are charming and engaging. The interaction of the bar is one of a kind - I now know why so many I know are seeing it again and again!

Saw this in previews last week on Broadway. It's absolutely fantastic. The artistry on display is just beautiful and this recording is everything I hoped for! :)

It's not the usual broadway musical but it is still wonderful.
