Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin Song Info

"Stairway to Heaven" is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was composed by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant for the band's fourth studio album, Led Zeppelin IV. It is the most requested and most played song on FM radio stations in the United States, despite never having been released as a single there. In November 2007, through download sales promoting their recent Mothership release, the song hit #37 on the UK Singles Chart and #13 on the New Zealand Singles Chart. It was voted #3 in 2000 by VH1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs. According to music journalist Stephen Davis, although the song was released in 1971, it took until 1973 before the song's popularity ascended to truly "anthemic" status. "Stairway to Heaven" continues to top radio lists of the greatest rock songs, as well as topping a recent Guitar World poll. On the 20th anniversary of the original release of the song, it was announced via U.S. radio sources that the song had logged up an estimated 2,874,000 radio plays - back to back, that would run for 44 years solid. As of 2000, the song had been broadcast on radio over three million times. It is also the biggest-selling single piece of sheet music clocking up an average of 15,000 copies yearly. In total, over one million copies have been sold. The song's length precluded its release in full form as a single. Despite pressure from Atlantic Records the band would not authorize the editing of the song for single release, making "Stairway to Heaven" one of the most well-known and popular rock songs never to have been released as a single. It did, however, appear as a promotional disc in the United States, pressed as a 7:55 track on each side; on an Australian acoustic EP, and in the 1990s as a 20th anniversary promo book. The group's recording of this song also appeared as the sole Led Zeppelin track in the 1977 Atlantic Records 2-LP promotional sampler album, We've Got Your Music, marking the very first time that Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" made its official debut appearance in an American-released various artists compilation collection. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine put it at number 31 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In in a January 29, 2009, article, Guitar World magazine rated Jimmy Page's guitar solo at number one in the publication's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos in Rock and Roll History. Critics of rock and roll songs (and of Led Zeppelin in particular) have alleged that a backmasked message is recorded into "Stairway to Heaven." The message, which allegedly occurs during the middle section of the song ("If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now..."), is purported to contain Satanic references: Oh here's to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He will give those with him 666. There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan. – Most popular version of the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven played backwards The controversy originated from a prominent Baptist, who, in 1982, preached on the radio that "Stairway to Heaven" contained subliminal backward messages. This theory was later primarily advanced by Michael Mills, Jacob Aranza, and Jeff Godwin, who offered detailed analyses asserting the existence of hidden meanings within both the "backwards" and actual lyrics. In 1982, the Consumer Protection and Toxic Materials Committee of the California State Assembly held a hearing on backmasking in popular music, during which "Stairway to Heaven" was played backwards. William Yarroll, a self-identified neuroscientist, also claimed that "Stairway to Heaven" contained a message when played backwards. Various versions of the alleged message exist. The band itself has for the most part ignored such claims; for years the only comment came from Swan Song Records which issued the statement: "Our turntables only play in one direction—forwards". Led Zeppelin audio engineer Eddie Kramer confirmed this, calling the allegations "totally and utterly ridiculous. Why would they want to spend so much studio time doing something so dumb?" Robert Plant expressed frustration with the accusations in an interview: "To me it's very sad, because 'Stairway to Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music." An informal experiment by scientist Simon Singh suggested that listeners only hear the message after prompting.

- Great, Great Album

Although Houses of the Holy is my favorite album ever, this is the only album that comes anywhere near close to it. Not quite as good as I remember quality wise, but that was on vinyl, and nothing is close to vinyl.

- Greatest of All Time

Masterpiece

- The Best Led Zeppelin Album!

Whatever you may call it (Runes, Led Zeppelin IV, The Hermit, Zoso), this 1971 classic is, without a doubt, one of the best albums ever made! My dad is a huge Zeppelin fan, and got me hooked on them when I was young! He has the Hermit from the inlay of the album tattooed on his left forearm, showing how much of a Zeppelin fan he really is! Anyway, every song on here kicks total butt, and proves that Zeppelin is indeed the greatest rock band ever! Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham were all at their artistic peaks when IV came out, and they never backed down after this!

- You had to be there!

After watching "Almost Famous" by Cameron Crowe. I had to go find all that wonderful music that the movie was laced with. The first one was this album. It's so full of great music and well written, you had to live be there to really understand why this album and other bands had such an influence in us and me. I now know what Eddie Money means in his song, I wanted go back and do it all over, but I can't go back I know. Well this is the next best thing!!!

- Not a weak track present

All 8 of these songs are pure gold start to finish with a great variety in arrangement and sound. I feel like this album more so than any other Zeppelin album displays the bands wide variety of talents most eloquently. You get the heavy blues/ rock blend in classics like "When The Levee Breaks", snarling riffs present in "Rock and Roll", the unstoppable rhythm in "Misty Mountain", the highly orchestrated brilliance in "Stairway to Heaven", the sleazy blues sound of "Black Dog" or the sweet melancholic lullaby of "Going to California". Despite the vast array of sounds present during this album's start to finish, the listener is still able to follow Zeppelin's course here, as Untitled is one of rock and roll history's finest, most diverse examples of how the music was transforming during this era.

- One of Rock's Holy Trinity of Albums

Revolver. Who's Next. Led Zeppelin IV. If there were only these three records produced out of the British rock epoch, then that would have been enough. True genius abounds in all three works of art. This is Zep's finest, and well worth the price of admission. On any format except 256kb MP3. You hear about 15% of what the CD carries in sonic information. The CD is about the same ratio to the vinyl. Which format should you buy this album in? Numbers don't lie. If not vinyl, then the CD is the only way to listen to this and other rock classic recordings. iTunes- please, the time is now for higher quality dwnloads. Don't wait because as we all know, market share can disappear in the blink of an eye in the face of a superior product.

- yes kids this is what real music looks like

this is talent, try giving your ears the pleasure of listening to them

- Pure Rock 'N Roll Ladies and Gentlemen

Leaves my jaw on the floor. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!

- The Simply Greatest Album Ever

Led Zeppelin 4 is the simply best album ever, start to finish. Stairway To Heaven (besides being the best song ever made) is an amazing example of what a 8+ minute epic should be. It has insanely good lyrics, an INCREDIBLE guitar performance by Jimmy Page, and is overall amazing. Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks, are a great example of true hard rock/blues zeppelin. Jimmy Page has amazingly brilliant riffs, and is great this entire album. Going To California and Battle Of Evermore show that zeppelin can make folk/acoustic songs NOT boring,(as they had proved in led zeppelin 3. All in all Led Zeppelin 4 should not be missed by any person ever, who cares at all about music.

- Give it a listen!

Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands and I recommend this album to anyone who likes classic rock. If rock music isn't your favorite, give it a listen anyway. It's really good.

- Stairway To Heaven

This is the greatest single in rock n roll history. It can never be beat

- A.K.A. Zoso

I grew up listening to Zeppelin, partying to it like tomorrow was another dream. We called Led Zeppelin’s fourth studio album Zoso, because the it was like a code hidden in the “Runes”. I’m buying it to store in my “Cloud”, since my “Vinyl” is worn out, my CD’s been misplaced or stolen again and you can never get enough of it.

- Freaking awesome

Best album of all time.

- Oh Yea

Oh Yea Oh Yea Oh Yea It's Gooooooooooooooooood

- God..

Abosolutely astonishing.

- Greatest Rock Album of all Time

Simply the greatest collection of classic rock that has ever been put together. 7 songs that define the powerhouse of a group that was Led Zeppelin, along with the best rock song ever recorded

- Nothing short of perfect

Anyone who doesn't give this 5 stars is a troll.

- epic

this is not only one of the greastist rock albums of all time its one of the greatist albums of all time if not thee best, every song is a classic ,one of the most iconic drum beats of all time in the Levee breaks , many rap songs sampled this , of course stair way to heaven . one of the best songs ever written , the best .

- Awesome!

Even though all Led Zeppelin albums are great, I would say that this and Physical Graffiti were the most successful. I bought the cd a while back, and when I heard Rock and Roll (at first I skipped to that song) I turned up the volume. Do the same and buy this piece of history.

- BEST BAND EVER!!!

When someone asks me "what's your favorite band?" It's a no brainier because the answer is led Zeppelin. Their music just brings much joy to my ears. I am absolutely obsessed with them (even though I'm only 14). I wonder how it was like seeing them in concert when they were younger. Gosh I was born in the wrong decade!

- Awesome!!!

Black Dog: 5/5 Stairway To Heaven: 5/5

- Simply the Best in Rock

I first discovered Zep 20 years ago when I bought this album in college. Listening to it today brings me right back on that amazing moment.

- This is it

The pinnacle of rock music. The Holy Grail. Besides, it has Stairway to Heaven for crying out loud.

- Zoso

All of zeps albums are masterpieces and I'd have to say that my favorite album is the one I'm listening to. At the same time, there is something about this one that is special; it's lack of title, it's awesome cover, and it's music. If you want a definitive album, this is it. Featuring hard rock(black dog), roaring blues(when the levee breaks), haunting folk(battle of evermore), and epic tunes that are uniquely zeppelin(stairway to heaven), it's a gem you can't pass up. The bands talent and creativity is mind blowing. Buy it now!!

- One of the best

Like The Beatles or Pink Floyd, it's insane to assume anyone on the planet could successfully create a "Greatest Hits" LP for either. The same for Led Zeppelin. I became a Zeppelin fan around 1982. This is the first and favorite LP of mine. Keep the music together.....

- beautiful poetry

my all time fav !!!

- Led Zeppelin IV/ The Hermit/ ZoSo

This album has everything. Stop time (with vocals) and compicated riffs in Black Dog. All out drum fueled attack with Rock n Roll. Tolkein inspired and spiritual Battle of Evermore. The epic, building, from soft acoustic and flutes, to beautiful electric guitar, enter the drums, then a guitar solo, followed by a heavy outro section, and ending back where you started, Stairway to Heaven. The "B side" could stand alone. Misty Mountain Hop, another Tolkien fueled song that is highly unique. Followed by Four Sticks a repeating song that drills its way into your head. Next the delicate Going to California which takes you to another world. Finally, when the Levee Breaks, an adventurous roaring tune. My favorite album.

- The best

Are you kidding me. This album turned the world off its axis. A monumental work

- CD or Vinyl… Not Mp3

Led Zeppelin music is a lot better on CD and Vinyl format, Led Zeppelin is one of the few bands that deserve to be heard in good quality.

- It does not get much better than this!

One of the all time greats!

- WOW, Brings me back to my teens

Best album every. I remember as a youg teen in the mid 70's listening to this album every day after school , full blast volume, before my parents got home from work and would tell me to "turn that crap down", they just didn't get it! I often listended to this album while watching the snow fall from my bedroom window on Long Island. WOW, brings me right back to that time!

- 2ND FAVORITE

my favorite albums will always be lz ll and lz lv. top tracks stairway heaven, black dog, when the levvee breaks, four sticks, and GOING TO CALOFORNIA!!! THUMBS UP FOR ROBERT PLANT AND JIMMY PAGE!!!

- Transcendent !!!

Although Zeppelin were already mega-stars prior to this release, this was the album that elevated them to undeniable greatest rock band of their era status. This isn't my personal favorite Zep album (I don't think), but it's hard to say from day to day and mood to mood which one is. Albums 2 thru 6 are all so amazing it could be any of them on any given day! Back to this one though, "Battle of evermore" elevates me to a different plane and "When the levee breaks" is the greatest British rendition of Chicago blues that I've heard.

- Just Perfect!

I love Zeppelin and think that I and IV are both exceptional albums. Every track on here is amazing and hits hard. I wish bands today could learn from Zeppelin instead of mimicking the success of bands that just put in a catchy chorus and make millions. This album inspires, awes, and goes hard. Should you buy this album? Heck yeah and here’s why. Black Dog 10/10 (Just raw and hard hitting, epic song), Rock and Roll 9/10 (Awesome track with fantastic vocals and energy), The Battle of Evermore 10/10 (Perfect song! Has this medieval times feel and every note just hits it right in the spot), Stairway To Heaven 10/10 (Do I even need to explain why its so perfect?), Misty Mountain Hop 9.5/10 (Epic riff on this song! Very infectious hook!), Four Sticks 9.5/10 (So awesome! The only thing I barely dislike about it is that the vocals should be louder), Going To California 10/10 (Such a beautiful song, perfect lyrics too), When The Levee Breaks 9.5/10 (Great closing track! Sick harmonica solo and hard hitting guitars! The vocals are insane too!) Led Zeppelin IV = 10/10

- The 8 Greatest Songs ever released

Before I found this album in my Dad's CD collection I was not yet born! This is my favorite Led Zeppelin album ever.

- Led Zeppelin iv

Without a doubt the best album of all time, all the songs are amazing, this is proof that zep is the best

- Flawless

This album is a trip. One of the best albums to get high and listen to. The vibes really go through you

- Fantastic

I'm not even a real rock fan, but this is good stuff.

- Very good

A little overrated, but still one of their best. I don't care for Four Sticks or Rock And Roll, but everything else is great. I think Houses Of The Holy might be their best album, but Stairway To Heaven is their best song.

- This was never known as Runes.

I don't know what idiot came up with that explanation. But it is dead WRONG. The group members wanted to let the music speak for itself, and the choice was made to have NO credits or the name of the group, influence the public. The record company was outraged, but Zep stuck to their guns. And it became one of the best selling albums of all time. No singles put out and "Stairway" was always voted and the no. 1 song in every pool of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Know your rock facts, because this excerpt explaining this album is pure stupidity. The group chose a symbol to represent themselves, Jimmy was a mystery to this day. He only told Robert, and Robert said he'd forgotten the meaning. The 3 circles was Bonzo, representing the family trilogy. He, his wife and Jason. Robert was the feather representing peace. JPJ was celtic rune representing power. Your researcher needs to go to rock history school.

- Awesome, definitely worth the purchase.

This album is great. From the good old Classic Rock sound of "Black Dog," or to a more bluesy feel with "When the Levee Breaks." There is only 8 songs but it doesn't feel incomplete. This is a classic and it is definitely one of the best rock albums ever!

- one of the greatest rock albums ever made

I love this album and would recommend it to fan of this band or classic rock. the album sound incredable and every fits really well. every song on this cd is worth a buy so just get the entier thing you won't regret it.

- Rocks Best!!

This album will rock your socks off! The first time I heard Going to California and Plant sang, "Seems that the wrath of the Gods got a punch on the nose and it's starting to flow; I think I might be sinking. Throw me a line if I reach it in time, I'll meet you up there where the path runs straight and high," I knew this would be one my favorite songs! I've listened to just that part a zillion times. Stairway to Heaven is a huge classic but not the only classic on this album. Black Dog is one of their best and rates in my top ten LZ songs!

- Masterpiece

There's a reason why Led Zeppelin chose not to put an official album name for this phenomenal record. Mainly because the music speaks for itself. Outstanding album. A must buy.

- MASTERPIECE

There isn't any album better than ZOSO!!!!

- Own this on vinyl

This is the best have been listening since the 70's can't describe how great it is!

- I love Zeppelin

But this is their best album EVER

- Where's the 6th star?

You know you listened to a great album when you LOVED, not just "liked", every song on the album. These guys will never be forgotten!

- When I’m 64...

I AM 64 years old, and this album (in vinyl) sits in my collection where it’s been for years, unplayed. Listening to the previews of this album brings a rush of memories and emotions from years past. Now that I have the sound equipment to really appreciate Led Zep, I can’t resist buying this digital copy of my beloved album. This is rock music at its best!

- One of Best Rock & Rock Ever!!

Without a doubt one of the Best Rock & Roll songs ever written and played.
