- ALMOST a perfect return to the ring...

If I had to nitpick ANYTHING, it would be that Jason's voice is too trebly for the low low sound of the music. It just doesn't carry itself enough. Otherwise it's great! It's awesome to have him back!

- A pleasant surprise!

I did not expect this from Jason! Such a treat to find him still rocking out. Honestly, I did not think that he'd be able to put out something that rocks this hard. Such powerful guitars that hearken back to the very best of Metallica. Muscular and intense with absolutely phenomenal riffs. What the last few Metallica albums have been lacking, this album has. It's as if he took the soul of Metallica with him when he left. There's a certain level of metal intelligence and lyrical depth that hasnt been present in Metallica albums since Reload. Being a bass player, I never would've guessed that Jason had such a large hand in making Metallica what it was. This album proves me way wrong. As his song says, "First glance seems to be the wrong way to judge me." So true. The vocals are the only less than perfect factor for me. There are not many top tier vocalists in this genre. He may not have the top tier vocals of Hetfield or Disturbed, but he's just below that. Still better than most in this genre. I find it interesting that my first reaction to his vocals were that he sounds like Dave Mustaine. haha. Overall, a killer album with burning intensity and intelligence. The lyrics are almost too good for a metal album. Skyscraper, while being my 4th favorite, sends a phenomenal message with double entendre choruses. My only reaction upon hearing Soldierhead was "oh h*ll yes!" The only real bad part of this EP is that it's so short. I truly hope that there's a full album on the horizon.

- Old School Metal

This sounds like it could've came out in the late 80's and I mean that as a compliment. It's nice to hear Jason's voice again. Death N Roll for sure.

- Good metal

I always thought that Jason gave metallica great energy, vocals, attitude and top notch bass playing, they lack some of these attributes with Robert ( whom i am a big fan Pre - Metallica) i will support jason with this band is really good with his signature stamp all over it!! Keep it up!!

- oh yah

king of the underdogs, nuff said.I KNOW I WANT MORE JASON

- Basic and to the point!

Basic and to the point no fluff just metal. If your "old school" you'll love it if your "new school" sit back and listen to some METAL. Looking forward to a full length CD.

- It's Good!

if you're expecting killem all style, then look somewhere else. its a good decent start. i like the vocals. my only comment would be the sound of guitars ( i like em more Metal).. but looking forward for new stuff !! \m/ keep it metal Jason!!

- Thrash Metal is BACK!!

FANTASTIC!!!! And my god does Newsted sound like Lemmy!!

- Needs editing

The songs were tough sounding and catchy but the content can't sustain for six minute songs.....needs editing (except Soldierhead). I heard too much Wayne Static for me to like alot.

- Jason Newsted is Metal.

Newsted; Metal-EP, has a solid set of four true raw Heavy Metal tracks; if you like Mötorhead, Flotsam & Jetsam, early Metallica, early Sepultura, Black Sabbath, or Megadeth, you will want to throw $4 at this; it is more than worth it. Always been a Metallica fan; I admit to liking every album even the "crappy alubms" between 1993-2001 (oh except for LuLu I was greatly disappointed by it, but not surprised; as I am no fan of Lou Reed); the 90's seemed more about commercial success than Heavy Metal for Metallica, but I can listen to say... "Of Wolf and Man" "Where the Wild Things Are" "Bleeding Me" "Outlaw Torn" "Ronnie" "Some Kind of Monster" or "Dirty Window" and still enjoy it, I wouldn't call them a success for Metallica, because...except "Of Wolf and Man" I wouldn't even consider those songs "Metal". Jason Newsted had big shoes to fill when Cliff Burton was claimed by the Metal Gods, Burton was a driving force behind the writing, and composition of Metallica's Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets Metallica's two best albums, as well as argued to be among the greatest "Thrash"/Heavy Metal albums of all time. Without Burton; Metallica lost a friend and and bandmate, as well as a greatly talented musical asset. But, despite the "hazing" Metallica had Jason endure. Newsted proved to be a great bassist to complete the band, the problem was not Newsted replacing Burton, it was the lack of Burton's input that caused the downfall of the Metal giants' prowess. "...And Justice for All" proved to be an incredible album, and contained some of Metallica's most complex song structures, incredible riffing, brilliant arrangements, and deep thought-provoking concepts; it pushed the band to their limit. Once you hit the summit, you need to climb back down... Hetfield, and Ulrich where calling most of the shots, but running out of ideas; until Death Magnetic, Metallica lost it's mettle. Some argue even DM was not enough to bring them back to the standard expected from 80's era Metallica. Now that his history as Metallica's 1986-1999 Bassist is out of the way; let's get down to "Metal - Extended Play". This is Heavy Metal, from the fast tempo'd Kill 'em All style (almost "Whiplash" reminiscent) intro in Soldierhead also flourishing his Flotsam & Jetsam roots, complimented by Newsted's powerful growled vocalisation, "God Snake" slows down the mix, but is truely a heavy piece of work with a more traditional early to mid 70's Heavy Metal feel, I could sink into the catchy crunchy chorus of "King of the Underdogs" and eerie echoes of the guitar solo; "Skycraper" on the other hand stands out as having a Stoner Rock/Sludge Metal sound, but still ties to the overall Heavy Metal attitude of the E.P. I give it a 4 out of 5, it didn't amaze me, or strike me as a milestone for music, it doesn't provide us with something completely new or original, but it is definitley a strong move on Jason Newsted's part, I personally like this Exteneded Play, all four songs are well put together, and strike into the core of Metal history surrounding Newsted and his cohorts. I can't see this helping revive Metal, but stand-alone and to anyone familure with Jason Newsted it is a "crazy and colorful" piece of art.

- Newsted

The sound is dated. And there is no snap that really makes you say this is something new and worth buying. Yes I know he was in Metallica but he was in the band the whole time they sucked. I've been into metal for over 30 years. Spend your $4.00 on coffee.

- KICKASS

Old school kickass metal that wont let you forget that THIS is what it should sound like!

- Old School

Jason's voice is hardcore and the metal takes me back to the 80's. I love it!!!

- Newsted - Metal

Hell yes ! So good to hear some great Metal !!! Love it!

- newsted metal

great songs. much better than the same old crap Metallica has been putting out

- Newsted Metal

First or all, I am a huge Metallica fan, and I wanted to hate this EP so badly. But, I freakin love it. I am really glad it was 3.99 cause now I'm hooked. If it were 12.99, I would have just kept scrolling. Thanks Jason for keeping the price low for this EP, can't wait for more down the road.

- It's Good! with an exclamation Mark!

Just listen to it a few times on preview all, you won't be disappointed.

- Great intro for the Returning Newsted

Welcome back Jason!! And what a hell of a way to make a return. This EP is fantastic. Great sounding, good vocals (actually a bit better than what I thought he would bring to the table). Great riffs, Soldierhead screams Testament/Motorhead, it's really a great album. Really happy to see Mr. Newsted back in the game, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the former Metallica Bassit. Cheers!!

- Wow

I've listen to this LP over and over, ( at least 50 times),In my opinion these are the best metal songs released by any metal/hard rock/thrash artist in the last 10 + years, Jason knocked it out of the park with this one, this is a must have for any true metal/hard rock/thrash fan. I'd reccomend this LP to anyone who wants to revive their inner metal soul!! I havent felt this way since about a new release since "...And Justice For All"!!!!

- NEWSTED- METAL

Killer......OLD SCHOOL.... Sounds better then anything Metallica has put out...... Very Heavy..... Soldierhead reminds me of Motorhead .... I really like this VERY NICE Jason & Co.....

- Good strong thrash metal!

Very strong return from a fixture of metal who has been missing for way too long! Jason, welcome back, sir!!!!

- What?!

Every time someone leaves Metallica another great band is born. This is the best thing I've heard in a long time. Now I have 3 favorite bands. Metallica megadeth newsted.

- engageing metal

Strong Bass and drums with a great lead vocal. Crushes Mettalica's last 2-3 Albums.

- ......

Very Nice .!!

- NEWSTED METAL!!!!

Jason killed it with this one. Looking foward to the full length disc

- Killer music...

The EP is so good.

- Finally Jason Breaks Out!

Jason nails it out of the park... METAL!

- Incredible stuff!!!

Been looking forward to this release. The music reminds of early Black Sabbath and his singing is a lot better then I expected. Looking forward to a tour and a full album release. If you like metal you should absolutely check this out!!

- NEWSTED is Better than EVER!

I wasn't a Newsted fan when I used to listen to Metallica. Well guess what, I am now!!!!!! James, you should BEG this guy to come back, and oh yeah, maybe let him take over vocals?! Just sayin'

- Newsted still rocks

Very good songs. Well constructed good sounding heavy metal.

- newsted-metal

good job jason! we been missin good ole metal.....

- Metal from the heart

I have always appreciated Jason's intelligence, honesty and belief in himself. This is a great slab of old school metal. I cannot wait for the rest of the EP's to come out. Pick this up and crank it to eleven! One of the better offerings of the past 6 months!

- Very Metal Indeed

A lot of great stuff packed into four songs, sounds like Metallica with Chuck Billy on vocals, or am I the only one that picked up on that? Anyway buy this, you won't regret it.

- New wave of metal on its way

Soldiershead is freaking awesome. Love the whole ep. If your pallet has been thirsty for real music give your ears this feast. Jason might be heading the new wave of metal

- Newsted

Well done Mr. Newsted, well done.

- Love it!

Buy it!

- Nice Work

I like what I hear so far...hopefully he can put out a solid full length.

- Lemmy? Is that you?

Ya know, it sounds like Jason is channeling Lemmy on the vox. Ever since hearing him sing "Whiplash" on tour back in the day, I knew he could do it. His pals on guitar and bass deliver, too. In all, a nice sludgy/stoner trip that will make you a believer. Great combo! Looking forward to more.

- Metal

Newstand Amazing

- Pure Newsted

If you have listened to the Newsted era of Metallica, you MUST listen to this EP. It is 100% worth the $4!

- Rock on!!!

Sounds awesome Jason!!!!!!

- Metal

I agree with them

- Like it!

Thrash metal classic style.

- Awesome!

Keeping real metal alive!

- Time-Warp back to Classic Metal!!!

Jason doesn't just step back onto the metal-scene, he crushes it under his heel! This is the best metal I've heard since Master of Puppets! I love the raw energy poured into this EP, and can't wait for the rest of the album to hit. WELL DONE, JASON!!!

- Metal... Just metal

Great EP, good vocals and excellent bass execution. Congrats Jason!! b.t.w. iM a MetallicA fan to death. But this is excellent!!

- Yea, this is better than Metallica

The worst song on Death Magnetic is better than the best song on this. Poor production to boot.

- Killer!!

Always knew Jason would come out with something... It's got old school metal written all over it!

- It's ok

I mean this has alot of energy and drive...but the basic songwriting and clean production are not strengths. Its ok and I think they can do better

- About time

It's about time Jason started singing. He's kind of disappeared since joining Voivod and Ozzy ( which he left after Ozzfest) I'd pay more than 4 buks for it.
