Jimi Hendrix - Somewhere

Somewhere by Jimi Hendrix Song Info

Recorded in March 1968, this song finds Hendrix supported by Buddy Miles on drums and Stephen Stills on bass. Engineer and producer Eddie Kramer told Rolling Stone, "[it's] a fantastic example of Jimi's amazing control of the wah-wah [pedal] the tone of the wah-wah – how that affects the whole song." The track was released as the first single from Jimi Hendrix's posthumous album, People, Hell & Angels. The record contains 12 previously unreleased tracks showcasing, the guitar legend's experimental work outside the then current Jimi Hendrix Experience. This is not the first time the song has appeared on disk. A different version was previously included on the 4-disc box set titled The Jimi Hendrix Experience, which was released in 2000. Co-producer John McDermott commented to Digital Spy that he was surprised this wasn't considered for Electric Ladyland. He added: "I don't know whether that was because Jimi recorded it without Chas Chandler being there to supervise it - that could have been an issue. Like 'My Friend,' it's a really interesting look at Jimi when he was just starting to step outside the original three-man band." Stephen Stills was good friends with both Jimi and Buddy Miles. McDermott told Digital Spy: "I think this track was really about Jimi taking advantage of the skills his friends had and tapping into that. Today, it's nothing to invite your friends to the studio and have them play on a track - people do it all the time, guest starring on cuts and all that. Back then, it didn't happen so much. The Beatles, The Stones - with rare exceptions, they always kept the core." This was one of seven tracks from People, Hell, & Angels, which featured on the episode of the CBS cop drama Hawaii Five-0 that aired on January 20, 2013. People, Hell and Angels debuted at # 2 on the Billboard 200, marking Hendrix' highest-charting album since Electric Ladyland spent two weeks at #1 in 1968.

- Wow

Truly fantastic album, make sure to listen to it at full noise on a good stereo. (Air Guitar not included, but recommended for full enjoyment)

- Amazing

Hendrix is the best. Full stop.

- Shame on Janie!

Obviously, this is an attempt by Jimi's adopted sister, Janie, to cash in on her Jimi's fame and loot. "Are You Experienced" "Axis: Bold As Love" "Band of Gypsys", and "Electric Ladyland" are the only ones I'll need from this master of the Strat. SCREW YOU, Janie, and SHAME ON YOU!

- Some gems mixed with stanard "unreleased" fare

This is obviously a studio recording of the Band of Gypseys knocking around some track ideas seeing what shines and what doesn't come out right. Earth Blues and Izabella are pretty forgettable tracks that don't sound any different than other post-death albums. Easy Blues is my favorite. Very jazzy with a great walking bassline. I have yet to hear a bad version of Hear My Train a-Coming.

- happy to this release-

Nice job on the tracks, definited must have for all Hendrix collectors

- Aka Jimi

Dam I should get paid.

- Retreads

I love Jimi and have nearly all of his albums, but this is the bottom of the barrel. At some point, the Hendrix family needs to accept that there's just nothing left to sell.

- People hell and angels

certainly outtakes from a multitude of sessions during the later transitional era,.... yes,... there are some pastings,... maybe a slight of hand,... a tempo cheat here and there... but for anyone that actually Loves Jimi,... and is a "player" familiar with the exuberant amount of takes one lays down before the "final" album track,.... well I think its refreshing to hear some re-mastered "dialed in" versions of that transitional era. If i were running Experience Hendrix,.... I would make a pure studio session album,... with the banter,... and all the good stuff,.... I like it for what it is

- Hendrix Lives On

Great album. Still love his style and sound.

- Another masterpiece

Amazing.

- A "real" experience

Okay, some will complain that these tracks aren't "previously unreleased" and worse, that they don't sound as good as other releases. That is sort of missing the point. People, Hell and Angels, unlike so many of the albums that came out after Jimi's death, is a collection of Jimi's actual unreleased studio recordings--minus the session musician overdubs that accompanied those many previous releases. Yes, three are some songs on the album that musically, may not be the best mixes of that particular song. More importantly, however, these mixes represent Jimi's work as just that: Jimi's work, alongside long time band mates, and talented musical pals such as Steven Stills. I, for one, haven't found a single track on the album I don't like. The third triplet (side C to my fellow vinyl owners) is the best side in the bunch, but having listened to the entire double LP multiple times now, I can say with complete sincerity that I love this album. If some of the songs are less polished, at least we benefit from the fact that Jimi Hendrix sounds better when a little rough than many other good bands do even after many redubs.

- Amazing

Better than the Valleys of Neptune album as great as it is! Long live Jimi!

- In response...

This is not a review. I did not buy this album, I just listened to the samples. Dear 'FED UP FAN', I don't believe you know much about Jimi Hendrix, or music for that matter, so I'm going to enlighten you. Jimi Hendrix taught himself to play the guitar, (well first the ukelele, which he learned to play by ear without written music or tab. Besides that, the ukelele had one string.), unlike Buckethead, who received private instruction from a high quality guitar instructor. Also, in the 60's there were a very limited amount of effects on amps. Now, in the 2000s, there are a seemingly unlimited amount of effects, not to mention the benefits of digital audio. Even with these setbacks, Jimi remains one of, if not the most influential guitarists of the many rock genres. Listen to songs like Voodoo Chile, Hey Joe, or even his version of Star Spangled Banner. If that's not enough for you, take it from RollingStone Mag top 100 guitarists. Jimi Hendrix- #1. Buckethead- Nowhere to be found. I'm not saying Buckethead's not a great guitarist, he just can't compare with the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Sincerely, A Quite Satisfied Fan.

- Hendrix

The G.O.A.T. period end of story

- Its Jimi!!!!

I love listening to his music. Closing my eyes and remembering so far back. Its more than all the info that these reviews say its a time when life was so different. So very different. Just enjoy listening, don't spew all of your knowledge about unimportant trivia. just hear and remember. That's it..... He was a gifted musician.

- 45 Years later still none can play like him ..No one period.

Never get tired of listening ….100 times better than any new Music released by any So called Rock band these days

- hendrix

his music is still alive, and well!!

- Highly overrated

This is an album of previously unreleased tracks. I listened to all the songs. Through the preview and I have to say there mediocre at best. Not sure if Jimi would have released these if he were alive today. I myself think Jimi Hendrix has a lot of cool songs(greatest hits) . But overall he is a highly overrated artist/quitarist. So much praise for a guy with limited vocals. And a guy that played his quitar wildly and was to be a genius because of that. I guess that's why he gets so much praise , because nobody played there guitar in such a way. I would of loved to see how he would of matched up to a more modern quitar player

- OK, Enough Already Mr. Record Company Executive Man

The music is great (of course) but do we really need to hear this stuff for 99 and one-half days?

- Genius he definitely was.

Anybody that doesn't think Jimi Hendrix was a genius, should probably just keep that to themselves. Just sounds stupid and quite ridiculous to say the least. It was not just his guitar playing that made him widely considered a genius. Modern guitarist versus The late Jimi Hendrix, come on really???? That's quite laughable.

- Wow!

These songs are forty plus years, and they are a heck of a lot better than some of the crap today's so call artist play.

- My man Jimi, still rocking!

Wow Wow and Wow!!!!

- Sly Funky

Can u say sly funky? Anything Jimi recorded is classic. Love it! Go Janie Go! Keep yo Brother's art coming! Its timeless and in a class by itself.

- Prof.

Really. Digital Jimi Hendrix. Huh. Well, I guess I'll have to digitize for the post Experience. Feel it, shake with it, move with it, groove with it: it's Jimi Hendrix. Turn it up! Indeed. Those are what used to be known as songs. And the lead instrument is guitar licking good. Why not? Exactly.

- Just but it enough said

Previewed the first couple of songs and bought it..amazing album

- He's back from the DEAD!

This is what real music sounds like...no one can compete! These songs are over 30 years old and 16372910 times better than today's music! RESPECT. JIMI LIVES ON!

- people, hell and angels

good but not stevie ray i'm biased and older guy

- Goosebumps

Wow. Speechless.

- Jimi Hendrix "Hands Down"

Line them all up, and Jimi will string them down. No disrespect, but face it; colorful lyrics, ground breaking playing style, ear opening sounds and a penetrating feeling when he plays. Wish he were around today to pipe down haters and open more doors to rock out his astronomical style. Jimi was out there and still is. Shep

- Decisions, Decisions.

Whilst at Target today I had to make a difficult decision: Purchase the new Imagine Dragons Deluxe Edition Exclusive OR buy Jimi's Target Exclusive Edition. Plus they were both on sale for $11.99 - too much stress. I walked out with People, Hell and Angels and feel pretty good about myselft. The End. Thanks for caring.

- Particle

I just got this album and for sure its marvelous. Yes, Hendrix was a genius musician where this was just pouring out of him, his soul. It was probably harder for him to put mediocre stuff out, it just wasn't in his heart and soul to do that. Yeah, he was taken far too early and i'm sure he would have brought new musical forms once again, like Miles Davis did, and who also inspired Miles. Gone but not forgotten, i'm convinced Jimi is still making magic soul music and his stuff never sounds dated. Thanks for what you brought to the world, Jimi.

- OVERRATED

Go listen to Buckethead…a superior guitar player in every way….

- I love you Jimi

A fan who laments the lateness of my birth, for it deprived me of the chance to worship at the altar of your stage. I only hope you understood within yourself your otherworldly talent and the impact it had/would have on the world. You definitely deserved that understanding. Peace.

- The real deal

This album is Af#*k!n Maxing. Kudos Jimi. Your spirit cont. to transcend us planetary folk.

- Jimi

Jimi has created a unique sound that made him Jimi Hendrix a sound that , if you enjoyed for 40 years I recommend you spark up a bone and enjoy again Peace

- Historical Perpective

Christopher Williams, you truly need historical perspective..... "Limited vocal ability"???? (Limited maybe if you consider Howlin Wolf or Buddy Guy limited..... But the that says more about you than them...) "Wild guitar playing"????? (I take that you are inferring Jimi is sloppy and undisciplined in his approach....) What modern guitarists would you suggest are an equal to-let alone surpass-Jimi? Vai? Satriani? (Technically accomplished but cold cold cold)....... Buckethead ?.. (Interesting player but no genius pioneer) Will any player you put up against Hendrix have his staying power? Cutural Impact? Really????? I suggest you do some research before posting such unfounded statements.

- FED UP

Really, FED UP? Jimi Hendrix is one of the greates guitar players in the history of the universe. Are you older than 12? If so, shame on you. If not, google it and educate yourself.

- Epic

Its so hard for me to find something on my level. Jimi is still the greatest and deep down inside everyone knows this man! The youth finally have of a music influence once again.

- Makes Sense...

All these questions about how Hendrix produced so much music in such a short period of time...well people, speed is one hell of a drug

- AWESOME!!!

Jimi lives again. No one ever took his, Janis Joplins' or Jim Morrisons' place in history. Sex, drugs and rock n roll, forever. Missing Jimi again

- Great album

It's a jam, bluesy as hell

- Rock on

The Great Hendrix lives forever through his songs and pleasantly reminds us all the greatness of Rock'n Roll accompanied with his insanely riffing guitar sounds and solos...

- No way in hell...

would Jimi Hendrix or anyone from his estate and family ever title an album like this. I will not buy this product ..

- Simply Jimi!

To all the so called "fans" of Hendrix disparaging his family or whining about "inferior takes" or, "heard it before", you are not true fans of the genius that was Jimi Hendrix! Get a clue! Jimi was a restless soul of creativity, always searching for the elusive soul and sound that he wanted in his music. Each take, regardless of its "quality" was his attempt and search for that spark which sometimes eluded him like with all true artists. It is this search for sonic perfection that draws me in to every take and every version of the songs and musical ideas he had created or was developing till his life was cut short. I personally celebrate each and every Hendrix take and mourn the musical possibilities that Jimi could have achieved if he had lived. This collection stands on its own as another look into musical genius in search of perfection. Fly on Jimi!

- Evil

Evil music

- Jimi

Jimi

- Hendrix no muere

Tenía mis dudas pensando que sería sólo un esfuerzo de la industria y el mercadeo, no es así. People, Hell anda Angels tiene un gran valor musical, contiene a todos los Hendrix. Lo recomiendo totalmente.

- I'm Fan boy

Amazing album, Amazing collection. Wish there was more. Love you Jimi!

- Incredible

I used to wonder where Jimi would have headed musically if he hadn't died. This album gave me a perfect glimpse into what his future may have held. The infusion of funk grooves with his already unique, bluesy style was truly enjoyable. It was nice to reconnect with my first guitar influence again.

- Music to my ears!

so very excited to add to the Jimi library.
