- Best Dream Theater Album!

This is my favorite album by Dream Theater ever. Period. This Contains some fast songs (I.E. Panic attack, Never Enough,) some progressing songs (I.E. I Walk Beside You, These Walls,) and some of the best songs on my Ipod (The Root of all Evil.) In my opinion, you won't regret buying this album!

- Great

This is a great DT album. 'nuff said. Okay fine. The Root of All Evil: 4.5/5 Sweet intro song The Anwser Lies Within: 4/5 Interesting, grew on me. These Walls: 5/5 Awesome, that's all I have to say. I Walk Beside You: 6/5 My favorite on the album. Panic Attack: 5/5 Amazing solo in the middle. Never Enough: 5/5 Pretty heavy awesomeness Sacrificed Sons: 5/5 Great song about 9/11 Octavarium: 5/5 Okay I ain't gonna spoil it, get it yourself.

- For true Dream Theater fans, this album is a fail

Ever since has hit rock band nubie dream theater fans have been buying this album. Theres nothing wrong with that, but what I'm trying to say is they havn't listened to images and words, awake, metropolis pt. 2, and so on. So they don't really know what to excpect. In other words true dream theater fans like myself may be dissapointed with this album for the facts that it's extremely cheesey to the point that some riffs sound straight out of a taylor swift son. NOT COOL! and that crazy magical technical sound isnt here as much as it was in previous work, this album doesn't really allow us to enter the dream theater. highlights of the album are panic attack and never enough. HARDCORE DREAM THEATER FANS STAY AWAY!!!!!!

- Great album

This album is great! I really love panic attack!!! I heard their drummer is recording with A7X now!!

- One of DT's Best

This is still my favorite DT album, and I have listened to all (or nearly all, there are quite a few) of them, but several do come close. I will rate the songs 1-8, but keep in mind that they are ALL GREAT, these are just my personal preferences. 1. Octavarium. By far one of, if not, the best song they have EVER produced. The musicianship is just phenomenal. It sounds like a symphony. You will be breathless by the time this is finished. 2. Never Enough. This is a tough one to pick, but I absolutely adore the guitar in this song. Its very lyrically based, but also very strong. 3. The Root of All Evil. A great song. Again very lyrically based, but absolutely immersed in both heavy drums, bass, and guitar. 4. These Walls. Wonderful. One of the heavier songs on the album, fabulous. 5. The Answer Lies Within. Beautiful song, thats all I can say. The melody in this is just amazing. 6. Sacrificed Sons. Another ballady song, but it has some of the best lyrics Dream Theater has written. 7. I Walk Beside You. Very beautiful song that is very "radio-friendly" as others have described. It just isn't quite as deep as some of the other songs. And yes, it sounds strangely like U2, except much better. 8. Panic Attack. The heaviest song on the album, but one that I felt was "shallower" as far as lyrics went. The guitar and drum are very strong, as is the bass, I just don't find it as good as the other stuff on the album. Do your ears a favor and get this album. The first DT album I purchased and I still listen to it constantly.

- A+

This album is 100% genius! "The Root Of All Evil" and "Octavarium" act as bookends, with other greats like "I Walk Beside You" and "Sacrificed Sons" in the middle. I also love how some songs have seamless transitions and the fact that the whole album "ends where it began" with the low piano note at the beginning and way at the end. I'm a major Dream Theater fan and have all their studio albums and this is my favorite song-for-song (not all my favorites are on this one, but it, in my opinion, has the most hits on it than any other individual album...so far...).

- best thing ever

This album is, quite frankly, the best thing ever. Panic Attack is an awesome song, but not even it can compete with the final track, Octavarium. Buy at all costs! especially ones less than $15!

- well rounded and MIND BLOWING

genius, one of my favorite albums of all time, spanning a wide range of possibilities for the band but still sticking to the roots. all the songs need to be heard through with the album and appreciated as a whole piece, as well as individuals. because they very much are individual. from ballads like the answer lies within to grunge attackes like the root of all evil to the progressive masterpiece and my favorite on the album, octavarium, they still sound like dream theater and....yeah just amazing. i get chills at the end of octavarium, brilliant

- This is by far my Favorite

this is the greatest album i have ever heard and the only song i don't like as much is the answer lies within. but still make sure to buy the whole album. YOU MUST! the root of all evil and panic attack are wicked enough for me, but if you want the icing on the cake, GET SACRIFICED SONS AND OCTIVARIUM!! These songs are the ultimate! Sacrificed sons has wicked guitar and drums, and is a very good 9/11 song and octivarium starts easy, but don't be scared you heavy metal lovers. during the last 7 minutes about, it goes HEAVY. so get it soon, get it now, get it later, I DON'T CARE! Just get it!

- Simply amazing...

This was the first DT album I listened to and it really introduced me to the style of Dream Theater and eased me into the prog rock and the ridiculously long songs. This is easily in my top 2 DT albums of all time. Breakdown: The Root of All Evil: Heavy. Freakin'. Metal. This is a good song to wake you up in the morning, it's musically interesting and is nice to listen to. Nothing too special though, probably my least favorite song on the album, but not a bad song by a long stretch. 8/10 The Answer Lies Within: An easy listening DT Balad. I love it, it's got a nice relaxing sound and James LaBrie's soothing tone goes well with the piano. 8.5/10 These Walls: This is my favorite song on the album. I credit this peice with getting me into Dream Theater. The symbols during the verses are incredible and the whole song just fits together into a masterpeice. This might be my favorite Deam Theater song ever. 10/10 I Walk Beside You: A good rock song. Simple and somewhat formula, but still good. 8/10 Panic Attack: Intense. Epic. Monstrous. Loud. Amazing. John Myung gets a chance to shine on this metal masterpeice. This song exemplifies the hardcore side of DT. 10/10 Never Enough: This song is a good prog song. Some good metal riffs and a good keyboard line. 9/10 Sacrificed Sons: Another one of my favorites. I love the vocals for this song. 10/10 Octavarium: This song deserves the title of the album. For new DT fans, 24:00 is an intimidating time for a song, but it is well worth listening to the whole thing. This song is progressive metal to the letter. Every minute of this song is fantastic. Overall Album: 9.5/10. Simply amazing...

- Best Album Ever!!!!!!!!

This album is their best album ever.I can never stop listening to it. The best song on it would probably be These Walls.it just has a great intro to it.Don't HESITATE Just Get it!!!!!!

- Awesome!

This album rocks! and if you guys are looking for something that sounds like them I found this guy Matthew Pablo who does instrumental music.. It's awesome too! I'm a dream theater fan, I highly recommend it, I thought everyone should know..

- We want more!

Other than Denver 101 (roll eyes) who could possibly resist dream theater? They are the best band to have ever walked the earth. Here is a review for Octavarium. Root of All Evil-Fantastic intro track, however it could use more choruses-"take all of me..." best part of the song. Petrucci lays down an incredible solo toward the end. 96/100 The Answer Lies Within-The softest song on the album, it's a good place before the heavier riffs of the next song. Reminiscent of the song Vacant from the Train of Thought album. I like this song more than most DT fans. (All of you have great taste, though.) 95/100 These Walls-Probably the second most consistently heavy song on the album (after Panic Attack.) I prefer this song, though, because there is a more melodic tone to the chord progressions, and La Brie's vocals, too. 98/100 I Walk Beside You-The song is decent, though not one of the better songs on the album, especially since, being a fan of DT, I got used to 15 minute musical Odysseys. (one of those on this album!) 91/100 Panic Attack-My least favorite song on the album, this one is still better than most. The lyrics are about exactly what te title suggests. "Rapid heartbeat pounding through my chest. Agitated body in distress." Song doesn't have as much of a tone melodically, but still worth a download. 88/100 Never Enough-Sort of a generic DT song. Petrucci gets his heavy, complicated guitar riffs down to a science. La Brie does his high-pitched yell-sing he does (very well I might add.) Portnoy does the prominent impossibly amazing drumming behind the kit. Myung lays down some good prog baselines. Rudess doesn't get as big a part in this song, except for the keyboard solo bit a little more than halfway through the song. 94/100. Sacrificed Sons-This is where DT excells. 10+ minute songs allow them to loosen their musical muscels and create masterpieces. This is a good one about 9/11. Good idea with the news reporter intro. 100/100. Octavarium-My favorite DT song ever. Ever. Clocking in at almost 25 minutes, this seems more like several songs in one, from the strange ethereal sounding intro too the sort of symphonically backed musical sets toward the end, with heavy bits, talking bits, yelling bits, soft bits, and solos in all shapes and sizes. This is one of the best musical masterpieces ever. Thank you, Dream Theater. Download this album If only to get this song. 1000/100

- great album from start to finish

i though this album was outstanding, especially panic attack and the title track... i'd probably rank this 2nd in dream theater's catalog behind scenes from a memory, which is my favorite album of all time. by the way, being compared to my chemical romance is NOT a bad thing, as anyone who's actually listened to their new album would understand... and their music is certainly not "chord bashing emo"

- Back To Their Roots

On this album, Dream Theater returns to their progressive, experimental music instead of the heavy, brutal style of Train of Thought. I love both of these albums, and it would be difficult to pick a favorite, so I don't know if their change was a good thing or a bad thing. All I know is that their ideas still continue to amaze me. Here's what I think of the songs The Root of All Evil: A great opener, an even better opener live. It continues the 12-Step Suite 5/5 The Answer Lies Within: A total switch around to a ballad, great song, but kinda typical DT stuff 4/5 These Walls: Took me awhile to get into it, but once I really enjoyed this song, not your average DT 4/5 I Walk Beside You: Totally different, which is a good thing, I love bands who branch out and do crazy stuff 5/5 Panic Attack: Heavy, complex and awesome, the bass line is really sweet 5/5 Never Enough: My least favorite, but it's still a good song 4/5 Sacrificed Sons: About September 11th, it's another song that changes around 5/5 Octavarium: Best song on the album, obviously, the instrumentals and everything are just SO amazing 6/5

- The charts are infected, and here's the cure!

John Petrucci, John Myung, and Jordan Rudess deserve so much more credit than the horse crap by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and other crappy devas that just want money and fame. John Petrucci has amazing solos on both Panic Attack and Octavarium, and Jordan Rudess made a truly legendary keyboard solo on Octavarium. Don't let the pop charts mess you up, buy this in-your-face prog metal, the real gifted music these days.

- This is THE CD!

This is right now the only album i am listening to. Thats right, only 8 songs- beginning to end. I really like this album, and i think it was put together well. If you are reading this, I really recommend you to buy this WHOLE ALBUM right now, or go buy it at your local music store.

- Sweet

Have you ever played this on Rock Band 2?!?! Flippin difficult, but wicked fun! This is a great song!

- Another Masterpiece!

Oh my god! This is yet another absolute masterpiece by the kings: Dream Theater. I can't stop listening to this CD. I recommend it for everyone, maybe not to people with short intention spans, there's a few long ones. This CD, maybe more than any i've ever heard, flows together perfectly from song to song in complete harmony. (1) The opener "The Rood Of All Evil" is amazing with a really great chorus, its probably the heaviest on the album which really grabs you into the music: 10/10. (2) The Answer Lies Within they take it to a lighter note with this one but still flows along beautifully: 9.5/10. (3) These Walls, oh man i love this one; incredible lyrics and overall vocals on this: 10/10. (4) I Walk Beside You; great song with again incredible lyrics and a lighter touch: 9.5/10. (5) Panic Attack! Great song with amazing bass intro, definately one of the most skilled all-around performances ever. Master Portnoy!: 10/10. (6) Never Enough, another amazing song with some cool keyboards: 9/10. (7) Sacrificed Sons is an amazing song with outstanding, heart-felt lyrics with a clear meaning. Amazing song: 10/10. (8) Ah...the most epic song ever written: Octavarium! This is definately one of my favorite songs ever, it compiles the greatest of the amazing skills and talents of this band and puts it into 24 minutes of pure awesomeness. I can't rate this highly enough: 10/10 Overall an excellent CD for long time DT fans and newcomers alike.

- Great album.

I'd recommend this for both longtime Dream Theater fans and people new to the band. Outstanding tracks: Root of All Evil, Never Enough, and Octavarium.

- True Music

to put it simply, this album puts 99.7% of today's "artists" to shame. it's a beautiful, heart warming, adreniline pumping, crowd pleasing peace of art that will leave you with a gaping mouth by the end of the title track. I won't rant because I'm sure that if youre considering buying this album, the other reviews will convince you. but i just want to explain the theme of the title track. it happens to be 5 (if I'm not mistaken) mini songs that are blended together with epic instrumentals, with the first 3 building up to the 4th. the 4th is truly breath taking, as it is a summary of the album: 8 short poetic lines describing each of the songs on the album, the last ending with the popular "trapped inside this octavarium" line. the 5th song slows you down and prepares you for the spine chilling finale. I'm sorry if this is an album spoiler for anybody, but I just needed to explain why DT needed to make it so long. without a doubt one of the best songs ever made. worth the 10 bucks alone.

- Great Album, Great Buy

This album is definitely a powerhouse of an album. It's got quite a bit to offer, and it delviers very nicely with 8 solid tracks. 'These Walls' is heavy, lyrical as always, and dramatic. The infamous 'Panic Attack' is ferocious, fast, and guaranteed to blow you off your feet. 'Never Enough' feels like a reflection of one's greed with memorable lines. the title track 'Octavarium' is definitely the pinnacle of the album though. The first 6 minutes feel like the best possible Pink Floyd tribute with keyboards pulling out one of the most impressive solos of most keyboardists I hear. Then, the rest is full of epic poetry-like lyrics, larger than life guitar, driving bass, massive drum beats, and proof that Dream Theater is definitely a band that transcends many preconceptions about what music is about. Nothing but 24 minutes of pure bliss. The only way you can accurately identify Dream Theater is progressive, even though they are extremely metal in some of their songs, but there is much more than that, especially in this album. Trust me, it's worth every penny.

- Dream Theater Analysis

Very awesome album, I can't lie, but it's best to get the CD instead of buying it on iTunes The reason for doing this is the cool references they make on the CD case, and also iTunes has left out a total of 2:18 of playing time that was in the actual CD...but, if you can't find the CD, definitely get it on iTunes

- whoa

this is DT's best album of all time. octavarium is hard to listen to the first time cuz it is rare for DT to have a somg LESS than 7 minutes long and it almost feels like a chore to listen to this album. but luckily, almost all of DT's songs pick up the pace within at least a minute, so that is a good quality. octavarium (the individual song) is mostly kinda trippy and weird, which I like. It's a good song to listen to when on a long drive or flight. it is also the longest song on my ipod, which says a little bit about the utter immensity of the song.

- Absolutely Horrible

You call this music?

- No letdown!

Without a doubt, Octivarium definitely proves itself to be the epitome of what DT is. Deep clear lyrics, rocking choruses, unprecedented musicianship and instrumentation, and driving melodies, and unforgettable Petrucci solos are ALL evident throughout this album, and there's a little of everything here. A truly epic album that every DT must own. The album song concludes it all, a 24 minute epic. an epitome of an album, Dream Theater uncandidly sets themselves at a completely different level than anyone else.

- Octavarium!

Not their best album, but it sure is good. The root of all evil- 5/5 The 3rd part of the AA suite, and possibly the end of octavarium. My favorite part is the opening drum riff. The answer lies within-3/5 eh nuthin special. These walls 6/5 This is freakin good, I luv the music in the background. I walk beside you 3/5 perhaps the sweetest dream theater song, yet it's on border line of modern pop. Panic Attack 6/5 This is the heaviest song on the album, and it's fast paced, edgy, and i luv it. Never enough 4/5 OOOO, I luv muse style. It's kind of a mainstream prog rock type. Sacrificed sons 4/5 A meaningful memory of 9/11 but it's a 4/5 cuz right in da middle of a song about a horrible day, Along comes an instrumental break that is completly different from the rest of the song! Octavarium 5/5 This is a good piece, but it's not really an epic song, it's mostly a bunch of mini epics put together, one of which is based on the movie Awakenings. The main theme is from the end of the root of all evil and the end kind of trails into the root of all evil. In addition ROAE is steps 6 and 7 of the AA suite but it is also in a way movements 6 and 7 of octavarium. All in all, this is an album worth buying.

- addicted

My roommate gave me copies of most of his dt collection early this year, been listening ever since. Octavarium is one my favorite songs and albums of all time, and I do think its a shame that people would think of comparing DT and MCR, which are neither similar nor even on the same level. Wont try and poke the emos anymore, but this cd is magnificent, this band is ludicrously talented. They knew exactly what they were trying to accomplish and did it with only one 20+ minute track. Pick up this and their other stuff, starting with 6 degrees, followed up by systematic chaos.

- EASILY ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS!!!

dream theater is probably the most talented I will ever listen to. Even though their style of music isn't exactly my type, I still love their music. i still am awed by the insane drums in Panic Attack and the sick guitar solos throughout this album. Even if you're more of a metalcore guy like me, you'll still instantly respect dream theater when you hear this album. They're also probably the first band where i can actually hear the bass in a lot of their songs, and man is it good! (best bass riff ever in the beginning of Panic Attack) Overall, if you're debating whether to buy this album or not, DO IT! you will not regret it!

- different, in a good way

dream theater surprises yet again, this time with more prog influence than metal, the opposite of the previous ToT. This is a very good album and a good way to get into DT if you are just starting. best songs: Root of All Evil Never Enough Octavarium (one of the best DT songs ever, super epic)

- My First DT Album

Okay first of all the title track and Sacrificed Sons are AMAZING!!! A must buy. These walls is also very very awesome and I Walk Beside You is good too. The Answer Lies Within is solid. Panic Attack, the first DT song I heard is good. But the truth is that The Root Of All Evil and Never Enough are crap. They aren't worth buying. But this is a very solid DT album.

- bcdui lksgyfduilsay fuidlasg

pwnageingness is c00li0 bro. unomasayan? d00d i like dream theater. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGTy vtewyufitewyufeyuwi qrteyuiw

- DT's best album

Aside from it being the best album from Dream Theater, it is also the best there is. I have no idea why it is rated 4 1/2 stars. The heavier part like Root of all Evil, Panick Attack, and Never Enough and the softer softer ones especially like the answer lies within appeal to me greatly. If you want an album that has a lot of variety, and uniqueness, this is it.

- sound flows perfectly

amazing every song has something unique about it that makes the son stand out. Panic Attack is the best with The Root of All Evil in a close second. but Octavarium blew me aways as well, at 23:58 it goes on forever but in this case it's a good thing. BUY THIS ALBUM, u wont regret it

- Bring DREAMTONE to iTunes!

I love dream theater! Thier music is awesome and I know many others agree with me. I saw Dream Theater a while back and while I love them, I was amazed with their opening band, Dreamtone. I am asking to bring a band that opened for them to iTunes. Dreamtone is a Turkish metal band which is beyond amazing! Please look into this great band! Thank You!

- Awesome!

By far one of my favorite albums. These Walls is just an incredibly good song, basically every song on the album is just awesome. John Myung is at his best, Mike Portnoy has to be my favorite drummer next to Chad Smith. Anybody who listens to Dream Theater should by this if you haven't already.

- Awesome

This band owns and Panic Attack is a great song

- brilliant

The Magnum Opus of DT's career. I don't say that lightly either. The Root of all Evil 10/10 - my favorite part of the aa suite, the shattered fortress comes 2nd The Answer Lies Within 9/10 - very slow, but soothing. These Walls 10/10 - I LOVE THIS SONG ! I Walk Beside You 9/10 - Reminds me of U2...but still great ! Panic Attack 10/10 - Incredibly technical, and it sounds great every time you hear it Sacrificed Sons 10/10 - man, such a good song Octavarium - 10/10 - The most epic song DT has written yet. Period.

- Incredible album. Buy it now.

I don't know why you're wasting time reading this. You might be sitting at your computer, saying to yourself, "Hmm... I don't know whether I should get this album." You should. The title track alone is worth buying the whole album. The other songs are amazing, too. Just click the "Buy Album" button right away. I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

- Epic Masterpiece

Dream Theater has been one of my favorite bands for years now, and not for the reasons most people like them. Sure Petrucci is fast, but DT's writing and technique is amazing and is often overlooked. Octavarium's music is amasing start to finish, especially the song Octavarium. It is a beautiful song with musical twists and turns. To make a long story short, this album has everything a Dream Theater fan looks for. P.S.- On These Walls, Petrucci uses a 7-string guitar tuned so low.(not a duck taped whammy bar)

- One complaint...

This album, like everything Dream Theater crafts, is simply incredible. It has a fluently-moving ballad, a couple thrash-ish tracks, and even a 20+ minute epic, so what's not to like? I only have one complaint, and I really wish this would be fixed. It seems that the iTunes version of this album has cut off the endings of some songs, specifically The Root of All Evil, The Answer Lies Within, These Walls, Panic Attack, and Never Enough. The regular versions of these songs help the album flow much better, and create a greater sense of mystery about this record. Please, Apple, fix this now. ಠ_ಠ

- Woohoo

D.T. Has done it yet again!

- One Day My Friend Came Up To Me...

He said "Have you ever heard the song "Panic Attack?" I unlocked it last night on Rock Ba-" I told him to shut up there. Dream Theater had been around for 20 years at the time of Octavarium's release, and they did it pretty much without the help of radio and VIDEO GAMES ):. Then all of a sudden, Whoa! "Panic Attack is like my favorite song... too bad they don't have any other songs" I'm like what are youtalking about?!?!? They have like, 9 or 10 Cds out!! I told you this two years a go!! Go away Hector, I don't want to talk to you right now. Aside from that, Octavarium is a great CD from the most talented band in the universe. There seems to be less soloing in the songs in general, but I don't really care about that. The music that they came up with is just a fantasy to all the other bands out there The Twelve Step Suite continues with The Root of All Evil, Never Enough has a great riff that sounds somewhat familiar (coughstockholmcoughsyndromecough,) These Walls, Panic Attack, Octavarium, and I Walk Beside You all tie for the best song on here..............................Oh, By the Way: nothing on here sounds anything like MCR. Nothing that Dream Theater does sounds anything like MCR. So for people who came here for something that sounds like MCR, you can go away now.....just kidding!

- Never heard of Dream Theater in my life!!!

I'm a die-hard ska fan. I like bands like The Toasters, Streetlight Manifesto, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, Hepcat, Big D & The Kid's Table, and so on. I had never heard of Dream Theater before I played Rock Band 2 and broke my right foot playing the drum part on Panic Attack. So I bought this album because it had Panic Attack on it, and low and behold, there's a whole wealth of great music to be found in every other nook and cranny of this album!!!! This band has a gift that few bands have, and that's the ability to grab someone's ear with their music who has never before liked metal or has never even heard it. That's what happened to me. I would definitely recommend this album to anybody who likes metal, or to anybody who likes to listen to music. I mean LISTEN. I'm a musician, and it was an absolute joy to listen to this album through and through and analyze the music chord by chord, measure by measure. By the way, I gotta give props to the drummer, whoever he is. His technical proficiency is just as good, if not better, than that of Neil Peart. So yeah. BUY THIS ALBUM.

- great album

The Root of all evil: 9/10: catchy chorus, good riff. Didn't really like the solo the answer lies within: 8/10: slow, but good these walls: 7/10: The worst song on the album: overrated I walk beside you: 9/10: catchy Panic attack: 10/10: almost perfect Never enough: 9/10: sounds like muse sacrificed sons: 8/10: don't like most of it, but the last 2 minutes are epic. Octavarium: ???/10: The numbers on my keypad don't go high enough to rate this song. perfect.

- hmph =)

some music to listen when i feel depressed XD

- Absolutely perfect

Every song is great especially tracks 2,4,5 and 8 One of DT's best

- DONT GET IT OFF iTUNES!!! BUY THE CD!!!

do what the title says, Octavarium is mindblowing. And for those who have never heard Dream Theater before, you just might have a new favorite band.

- First DT Album I Bought

This was the first Dream Theater album I bought and I gotta say that I still go back to it all the time. Most of the songs are great, but there are a couple okay songs. However, the song Octavarium makes up for them. Oh man I love that song. Anyway, I'd definitely recommand this album.

- mindblowing experience

one of the best albums I have ever listened to.
