Nas - Halftime

Halftime by Nas Song Info

Two years prior to the release of “Illmatic“, Nas' debut single “Halftime” was released in 1992 from the “Zebrahead“ soundtrack. The jazzy boom bap track was produced by Large Professor, who provided some background information on the recording of the track in an interview with XXL: "The session for “Halftime” was hot, ‘cause he was gettin’ his big chance. […] I had the beat already. And we sat there, cooled out a lil' bit. And he was takin' it easy, ‘cause he was like, “This is my turn now, and I’m gon’ make it count.”" An excerpt of Marc Lamont Hill’s superb essay about the song, “Critical Pedagogy Comes At Halftime: Nas As Black Public Intellectual,” can be found here. Busta Rhymes said this to XXL about the song: "I went over [to Large Professor’s house], & he made the “Halftime” beat in front of me, & he was gonna give it to me at the time. I didn’t know what to do with it. I didn’t know why I didn’t know what to do with it, because I loved the shit out the beat. Then I heard it on “Halftime,” & I was like, Goddamn, I was a stupid ass for not touching this beat!" Busta Rhymes: I just took it in stride. I was feeling good that niggas was feelin’ that way about me. I just appreciated Jungle when he told me that. Nas said this about the song to XXL: "I remember one time Busta Rhymes stopping by [Chung King Studios], & I met him. I guess he knew me from being with Large Professor… And my brother told him that he should leave Leaders of the New School & go solo. [Laughs]"

- Great Album!

Nas' Illmatic may possibly be one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. It's crazy how such a young rapper at the time could pick up such great producers like DJ Premier and Pete Rock and guests like AZ and Q-Tip. It's amazing. "N.Y. State of Mind" is one of the greatest rap songs ever. Nas vs. JAY Z, they're so hard to compare.

Hip hop never died, and never dies unless YOU die your self!!!!! Hip hop is what NAS displays thru out this Album, consciousness the everyday life of what goes on around you, what's good for you, what is bad for you, good decisions bad decisions and surviving it all putting it in music form where it doesn't sound like straight garbage or somebody else's music because some how it became a over rated over played single on the radio which was purposely forced into rotation to brain wash the masses!!!!!!!!!! Im out!!!!! Peace NAS!!!!!!! Swift Vader!!!!!!! Order66 the industry! We need Balance in the force, the Jedi must End!!!!!!!!!

- Simply the best ever

It is time to stop referring to this album as a hip hop classic. This album is not one of the best hip hop albums ever made. For those who know, this is it. Illmatic is the most amazing, most influential, best written, best produced hip hop album ever. It's time to state the obvious, Illmatic IS the greatest hip hop album of all time. It will never be surpassed as Nas took hip hop it's highest level. Higher than even pre Doggystyle snoop or Bigge. This album is why Nas is the perennial frame of reference for all emcees. I want to be buried with this album in my casket.

- Best Hip Hop Album of All Time

No questions asked, this is the verbal assassin’s best album, his first, and best hip hop album of all time. A close 2nd and 3rd would be It Was Written and Hova’s first album Reasonable Doubt. If you haven’t heard this, you haven’t heard the best hip hop has to offer. A timeless classic, enjoy, and thank you nasty Nas.

- Top 3 hip hop album of all time

This is a must own for hip hop fans. Right up there with "enter the wu-tang 36 chambers"

- Untouchable

This is without a doubt the greatest hip hop album of all time. With production from Q-Tip, Large Professor, Pete Rock, and L.e.s this album just can't be touched. Probably one of the most influential albums ever, you hear "The world is yours" sampled in Jay Z's "Dead Presidents" and even hear references in today's music with Logic and J. Cole. Literally, listening to this album changes your perspective on hip hop and life in general. From the dangerous opening of N.Y state of mind to the jazzy feel of the world is yours to the ledgendary verses of it ain't hard to tell, Illmatic is definitely the most intelligent and poetic album of the 90's as well.

- Trash

Lyrics are alright. Thats about it

- Classic

Such a classic album. Best lyrical album of all time.

- CLASSIC

One of the best rappers of all time, and this is arguably his best work!

- A masterpiece

This is definitely an essential hip hop album without a shadow of a doubt. You can actually sit and listen to this whole album without skipping any tracks which not a lot of albums have been able to accomplish. Even though it was released 22 years ago this album still holds up today and just me a landmark in the hip hop/rap scene. Definitely worth the purchase.
