The man is back! Great way to end 2014 with 12 tracks of soul

On heavy rotation...more than I expected. Needs time and patience to absorb this masterpiece...not a perfect record but deserved 5 stars for it's timing release and genre and trend transcending work.

If I could boycott every artist that referred to themselves as any form of a messiah, I would. No human should refer to themselves to be an equal of Christ.

When you listen to this album you must come with a open mind. The sound on this album crosses a lot of genres. Also what makes this album good is the musicianship. Hearing the way the band mocks D’angelo’s rifts on certain songs to the way the horns pop in and out is crazy and even to the chords from the guitar and keys. In order to hear the true grooves and undertones on this album you must listen more than once because there is a lot that goes on in the background of his songs and if your not listening you will miss it . You won’t understand his lyrics due to the fact he wants you to interpret and feel whats in your heart to fit the music he is playing. If you love music this album is for you!! Welcome back!!

Love D'Angelo! He NEVER disappoints. Have been listening to this from beginning to end since the day I downloaded it. While the music is superb as usual, I found he sound quality of the download to be lacking. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE FULL COMPLEXITY OF THIS WORK OR ART, SKIP THE DOWNLOAD AND PURCHASE THE CD! I purchased the CD today and the sound quality is 1000 times better than the iTunes download.

People! He's back and better than ever! Get the lyrics to overstand if you only understand! It may take multiple listens to overstand the depth and layers; being ever mindful that this is NOT recorded by today's overuse of technology. It's recorded the way it should be! Still in love with this album

At first I didn't really care for the album. The instruments/background seemed to drown out D'angelo voice. But after listening to it it's really some good music! The complete package and plus it isn't explicit!

This is far better than what I was expecting after such a long absence; it is definitely one to smoke to.

This album is for real fans of D'Angelo's musical talent, compositional skill and his maturity as a man. Black Messiah was released at a time in America’s social climate when our country needed social justice messages which spoke to current issues in society while avoiding preachiness. Messages which reflect the true culture of black music and were not and do not fit the pop musical mold which novice music listeners have degraded themselves to. Black Messiah is a throwback to the time when a recording artist's skill challenged our musical ears, exuded compositional substance and contained lyrical pros which will stand the test of time while showing musical mastery without a typical pop music sound. This album has staying power and I believe it's the most intricate work that D’Angelo has done to date.

With all the over produced crap out there today, it’s nice to hear honest, raw, pure, soul feeding music again. Sounds like D’Angelo’s just in his garage with his band having a jam session. Thank you D’!

I am a HUGE D'Angelo fan and have waited for this aldum to drop for a long time....all I can say about this new album is, I am not pleased. Other than the song "Really Love" which has the signature D'Angelo vibe and sound that made me play his cd's so much that I had to replace them 2xs (yes I wore them out).....I found myself shaking my head in shock. I hope the next album goes back to his roots and sound that I fell in love with.

I've been reading the reviews and to be fair, there are good points made about the clarity of the vocals! But there's something to be said about the use of actual instruments versus all the techno tools used today. I have the entire album on repeat! All of the music is refreshing to my ears, epecially the bass. I hope he's back in the studio!!

Terrible

I love this record from top to bottom. It's a masterpiece and it real music. You can hear the passion in his voice (even though you can't understand every word, typical D'Angelo) I can feel the music in my bones. It consumes my thoughts. It sounds like no one else. I love it!

Having grown up on R&B, I have truly missed the soulfulness of the genre. Without any hesitation, I plunked my dollars down for this album and am looking forward to hours of rapturous listening. Please support this brother and buy his work so he can keep turning it out.

I am one who still buys cd's (I still like packaging and artwork) and records/vinyls .... This was worth the drive to Best Buy .... 3 day wait cause they were sold-out and driving back. Real soul .... Fresh .... Classic .... Solid!!!

I grew up on soul/R&b music. This album was much needed especially the way the music now a days has changed so much. This music has brought me back. I have hope in soul music. Maybe this will convince Musiq soulchild to make a new album too🙏 I pray.

The wait for D'Angelo's return was not in vain. This album is comparable if not better than his Voodoo and Brown Sugar albums. This is his most adventurous album yet!! He is back and now an accomplished guitarist. This album is packed with funky drum beats, face melting funk guitar soloing, and the best vocal harmonies that I have heard from him. This is an album that I lsten to and appreciate even more as a musisician. There is something new to be found in every listen. Get the album!!! The only thing that bothers me is not being able to understand what D'Angelo is saying, his words are really hard to understand in most of the songs....

This collection truly another classic by D’Angelo. He has brought true Funk with a message back to the music scene.

I listened to every single track, loved the music but couldn't understand non of the words he was singing. The music overpowers his voice and he sings a word or two through out the song. I want the old D'Angelo back ASAP! This is not his best work.
