My first hearing of this magnificent recording was a discovery of one enchanting surprise after another. Repeat listenings reveal an unfolding of the entire work as inevitable, just, as we learn, Hughes imagined. I am sure you will find, as I have, moments of great joy, and a little chuckle here and there. Ever true to Hughes, the composer, Laura Karpman, does not shy away from the evocation of profound sadness. The drawn out counter melody she weaves through Shades or Pigmeat, is one of many moments of transcendent beauty that illuminates this epic text and invites us to listen, think and feel. The performances of an extraordinarily varied group of artists is unified by excellence and always convincing.
Deeply emotional, captivating music! Rich, mesmerizing harmonies, engaging setting of the text, luminous performances. Laura Karpman has created a tour-de-force masterwork that inspires, enlightens, and moves the soul. Bravo!!

This album crosses so many musical genres. The spoken word poetry by Langston Hughes is really brought to life, and the collaboration between all the artists like Questlove, Nnenna Freelon and the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra has really expanded my musical repertoire. Emmy-winner Laura Karpman is a genius. It’s just a really good album.
