For any one who wants to hear Verdi's Requiem in all its glory, this is THE performance. Barenboim is a genius director and the soloists are simply indescribable. The "Lacrymosa" and the "Recordare" will send chills through you. And you'd better bracing yourself for the "Dies Irae" - it is elementally violent. Verdi basically defines the sound of the afterlife in the post-romantic age with this Requiem and this particular performance does the composition amazingly proud!

Verdi's Requiem is one of my favorite choral pieces and I own a dozen or more recordings of it. That said, the one I play the most often is this one. Barenboim leads a well-paced, exciting performance and his Chicago forces respond well to him with a full, detailed sound - the Dies Irae will give you chills! Typically there is at least one weak link in every quartet of soloists, but this one is strong from top to bottom. Marc has a huge, shining voice that is as impressive in the climaxes as it is in the quiet moments. Aside from a flat octave leap in the "Libera me," she bests most of her recorded competition by the sheer scale of her singing. Meier presses a bit hard in places, but she is committed and riveting. I'm not much of a Domingo fan, but it's hard not to be impressed with his singing here - he takes the opening Kyrie in one breath and sings richly and confidently throughout. Furlanetto is no Pinza (but to be fair, who is?) but he tackles his wide-ranging music fearlessly. Turn up the volume on this one and enjoy!
