- "I say, totally unnecessary, eh, what?"

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is a brilliant musical assemblage. Their work is superb...normally. This time they've gone off the tracks. The Beach Boys arrangements are beyond excellent, and always have been thanks to their genius. What was supposed to be an homage to them, turned out to be an insult to Brian Wilson and the Boys. The orchestral intros feel out of place and force and then, the Beach Boys tunes as they were recorded are dropped in. Just get the original Beach Boys and enjoy them without the need for extra whip cream.

- This smells like a Mike Love cash-in job

I was curious, too, to hear it. As a true Beach Boys fan (over 30 CDs), I wanted to like it but the Royal Philharmonic is a classical-LITE group and they trivialize these great songs. "You Still Believe In Me" almost works, but again the strings play the most trite melodies, and the lack of cleverness in arrangements shows. You can't imagine the Beatles or Stones weakening their catalogue by okaying this type of cash-in. "Disney Girls", a great song but almost muzak anyway fits well with this, but it turns it into something you'd hear in the dentist chair before going under sedation. And probably we have Mike and Brucie to thank for this insult to the great Brian Wilson and Wilson Love catalogue. AVOID, especially those on a low-sugar diet.

- Completely unnecessary, but still a compelling album

I came into this as skeptical as everyone else, well aware of Capitol’s persistent milking of The Beach Boys material. However, while absolutely not an essential LP in Beach Boys canon, it’s definitely worth a listen for casual fans. Don’t recommend for true diehards though. There are several great tracks with more filled in backing tracks; which somewhat add to Brian’s ultimate goal of recreating the “Wall of Sound” Spector used in the mid 60’s. Sloop John B, Good Vibrations, and California Girls are probably the best of the album but that’s just my opinion. Anyways, I probably wouldn’t pay a lot for this album (I listened for free on Apple Music) but if you find a discounted vinyl copy or just want to download a couple tracks you’ll probably have an enjoyable experience.

- Fun fun fun sounds...fun!

I love the Elvis albums they’ve done and the Roy Orbison one too. I’ve only listened to let it be on the Aretha Franklin album. I’d love for them to do Willie Nelson, Queen, and especially Paul McCartney.

- Mixed

The originals are superior to at least half, if not more of these. But overall well done. "Heroes and Villians" isn't so good..."Darlin" suprisingly so.

- Don’t be fooled

This is indeed a remix. I thought I’d found old gold. Instead I found my old beach boys records with some extraneous strings. Other than the brief preludes you barely hear the Philharmonic at all. 🙄

- Remixed in stereo!

Beach Boys all the way up to '68 released their albums to be heard in mono, and stereo was an after thought released by the record companies. Beatles have already been remixed and remastered in stereo, but for the first time you can hear these classic songs reimagined. In every box set and release so far, I was always bothered by the stereo singles. This just just goes to show you how good the Beach Boys can sound when properly remixed for modern stereo systems. Amazing clarity, not just for the added orchestra but the fidelity of these recordings are just phenomenal which sounds like they went back to the multitracks. Yes, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine worked on this release. Royal Philharmonic orchestra are also incredible, but it would be interesting to hear these remixes without the new orchestral sections. Starting in 2017 with the newly remixed "Wild Honey" album originally released in '68, we are starting to see the record company pulling these old tapes out of the closet to get a much needed restoration this iconic band deserves.

- No Disrespect, but.....

This is extraneous and completely unnecessary. Buy the originals if you do not already have them and skip this distraction.

- Delightful, Creative

Quite a few commenters here who seem to scream when originals are toyed with. I understand that. But sometimes variations are creativity—and I love creativity. As long as it’s the living band members themselves doing it. The orchestral accents are not overwrought.

- Fun Fun Fun

Ive only heard Fun Fun Fun so far but enjoyed the addition of the Orchestra. I have any song the Beach Boys have ever released but I like the fresh addition to the already outstanding music! Have my album pre ordered!

- A really fantastic twist in classics

The reviews here are evidence that taste is subjective. While I also love the original versions of these tracks, I find these remixes really cool. I love the different sounds and the greater variety of instruments. I do agree that they could be mixed better as the voices are a bit too loud, but overall I think it’s a very fun listen.

- Absolutely horrible.

When you have no new Beach Boys product, this is what you come up with? The strings sound so disconnected from the actual songs. Brian Wilson would never have add schmaltzy arrangements like this. The worst has to be the instrumental break in "Here Today." Ugh. -- Boys, please go the vaults and find some buried gems that fans really want to hear.

- May not be essential, but get one song!

Okay, totally unneccessary, but "You Still Believe In Me" works very well with the orchestra. Download that one at least.

- 🎵🎵🎵

It really empathizes the tracks and turns some parts into what seems like a movie score. Great songs they picked. Sounds a bit more different at the beginning and the end of the track opposed to the middle.

- Fantastic sounds

A BB fan for decades, this is a welcome new sound. Orchestral accompaniment is lush and beautiful. Awaiting a second album - after all, no SURFER GIRL?

- I love it!

The songs now sound even fuller and colorful! I hope they do a second one! I love both your original version and this new version!

- Nope

Sorry, I like the original versions of The Beach Boys songs better...just being honest. 😞

- I actually really enjoy this

Although the entire song is pretty much orchestrated, that one strings note when he says “if you should ever leave me” hits so differently…

- the lushness!

man these songs sound so beautiful! buyin one after another....the arrangements are so light and airy. I LOVE vocal music and strings and horns! the way the harmonies meld with the orchestra....whoa! thanks so much boys!!!

- worthless

come up with some BRAND NEW MATERIALS! I am speaking to members other than Brian... This is why I strongly believe the Bealtes are far way well-balanced in talents than the Boys. I dearly miss Dennis/Carl. - from a loyal fan

- I like this CD !!!!

I'm reading the reviews but this CD is actually good. You have the soothing strings and the beautiful harmonies of the Beach Boys. A perfect combination. I like this CD alot. 2 thumbs up from me !!

- Awesome

I have both the Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison Philharmonic Albums, and love them both. I also have all the originals, including the Beach Boys originals and I think this really breathes some new life into the performances of great artists. I enjoy listening to all of them. There is even a new Live Roy Orbison "Holographic" Tour with the Royal Philharmonic. Maybe Elvis will go on tour again too !

- The Beach Boys And Company

What a Great and fresh look at the Beach Boys music. Even Brian, Al, Mike and Bruce love it! What better recommendation than that?

- Was this necessary ?

The Beach Boys music has always been on the tame side . Pretty melodies and harmonies without the need of a orchestra to drive the point home or mellow the point home . NOTHING a orchestra could ever do to make In My Room more profound . But now we have orchestras backing the Beach Boys , Sting has a symphony for Synchronicity ,Rod Stewart is singing 1940 Cole Porter tunes and Bob Dylan is torturing us singing Hark the Herald Angels Sing ( make your kids listen to that as punishment) and when will it end ? The last time music got this lame -the Sex Pistons slapped people back into being creative as did the Ramones and music got edgy again . Its true -The Clash were the last band that really mattered !

- It really grows on you!

I realize this is not a replacement for the originals and should not be expected to be. At first listen I thought it added an "elevator music" feel to the songs. After a few more plays I realized that on most of the songs it really added a new layer that made the song sound fuller. Especially on Disney Girls- it completely transformed it! It reminded me of the Moody Blues using an orchestra at some live performances to enhance the sound. Think of it as a cover of the original, with original vocals (sounding especially good), and a bigger "wall of sound" to fill out the entire effect. A very worthwile addition to a Beach Boys collection.

- Pointless

The original orchestrations were perfect. These new versions sound cluttered and muddy. Completely pointless exercise outside of making money.

- Very exciting!!

❤️❤️❤️❤️

- A Little Odd, But Glad I Bought It

I agree with the reviews saying some of the songs are enhanced and others diminished. Some of the orchestral overtures just don't work. I think the lead-in to "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" is absolutely horrible - a nice piece of music, but mixes badly with the song. Still, I haven't stopped listening to the album in two weeks, so I must like it overall.

- Another version of old favorites

It seems reviewers either love or dislike this release. Personally I enjoyed this release and would like to hear The Beach Boys and the orchestra together live. This has been very successful for the Moody Blues; they’ve been doing this for thirty years. This music has the potential of introducing a younger generation to the music I grew up with while doing the same for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Relax and enjoy!

- Sloop John B

I don’t care for most of these renditions, but The Sloop John B is great! The tuba player, the final 40 seconds or so, somehow had to be playing and breathing at the same time.

- disney girls is really good!

I totally agree with tonytodds review-they kinda upped the lead voice and buried the rest. Disney Girls works great though because the song has many points where you can fill in with music-its one of the latter tunes too. some of its real good, some not so much. I think whern Brian was at his best- no one could touch it- so nobody should try it now. However, there are many under produced songs in their music library that really are better suited for this type of production......

- Don't people appreciate real music?

There's so much junk music out there today. It's truly refreshing to have a collection by one of the great rock vocal groups of all time with a symphony orchestra, and not just any symphony, but the Roayl Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world's finest orchestras. Many of the songs make sense with an orchestra, like The Warmth of the Sun. Well done!

- Another Mike Love...

money making move. If you read any books about The Beach Boys, you will know about the relentless repackaging of their catalog and selling as something new. Always with some minor twist or new combination of songs. I LOVE The Beach Boys and I hate to see this.

- Well done.

Sounds really good. Love originals and these versions. Adds a little flavor. Well done. Not overbearing, obviously a nice combination of talented musicians.

- Don't Hate It But, ...

These songs have been touted as American musical genius for 50 years and now they need an assist from a symphony orchestra? Why? It's like re-releasing a movie with 30 seconds of added scenes that weren't needed for the original to be appreciated. Nothing but marketing to sell records! Many of the additions are hardly even discernable. Save your money, buy the originals if you don't already have them. There were gems and still are!

- Sometimes this works, but not this music, this on NOT!

Grew up with the Beach Boy loved them and their music. Occasionally the mix of the types of music mixed is great, no way here. If fact this mix takes away from The Beach Boys sound not enhance it. It’s a total distraction, no way I would buy this, sounds horrible. Roy Orbison mix album is an example a good mix to compare. Don’t waste your money with this one.

- Enjoyed it

Those calling Brian a sellout you should chill. The originals weren’t altered and you can still listen to the favorites anytime you want! If you don’t like these remakes, move on! I don’t like everyone of these but in my room I think is great! It sounds better with that fill in from the orchestra, gave it a nice warm sound. This isn’t selling out or horrible, just an alternate thing The Beach Boys tried out.

- What is this?

Honestly, the singles for this album were pretty good! “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “Good Vibrations” had this nice tone to them and were mixed well with the music. But apart from a few songs here and there. This album is truly a waste of money. The songs are mixed like crap and the singing is louder than the actual backing tracks which makes most of The Beach Boys’ later material sound weird as the backing tracks are absolutely horrendous. For example one of my favorite tracks “Heroes and Villains” has this nice intro that I would expect from a march or national anthem. But as we get into the song I turn off my music because the version I prefer or mix is when Brian’s voice comes in very loud and sudden! That’s basically what this new beginning was as coming to this album I thought I would hear a level of classical come in but since most of the songs are mixed like crap and the backing tracks are almost non-existent the songs end up being very bad. But the most peculiar thing about this whole album is the fact that a later song like “Good Vibrations” sounds good with the orchestra even if the song was jam packed with instruments and sound. The song actually sounded good but my question is why do the other songs sound bad? And why is mixed weird. The voices are all louder than the backing track and as I said previously it completely takes me out of the experience as I’ve come to love and that’s being swallowed by Brian Wilson’s “Wall of Sound” and listen to the sounds of California. Ultimately I’d give this 2 out of 5 stars as I still like some songs but my favorites were still ruined. This album had great potential as bringing an orchestra would have been interesting to hear as Brian has been renowned in the classical and rock world. And also I can kind of hear a musical style production to this too as the orchestra gives all these songs a more dramatic taking which I personally enjoy as I love musicals and The Beach Boys this is the closet these two worlds have come. But sadly it doesn’t give respect to the band and songs they perform. So if you are in fact a die hard Beach Boy fan I suggest not buying this album as it is a waste of your precious money and time.

- Disappointed

My second fav group. If you’re having an adult beverage while you’re listening you won’t even be able to tell the difference between the originals and these. Don’t waste your money.

- Average CD

I have just purchased this new CD thinking it would be as good as previous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra mixes but must admit not very impressed with some of the songs as they would have been best left as originals, only impressed with a small number of songs from the full cd .Very disappointed .

- Good Vibrations better than the original, the rest ...

I have mixed feelings about it. Some of it works very well. Some not at all. I think my biggest criticism is that the original tracks were so well produced and arranged, that by the time the RPO is added, they come off as being almost needlessly "embellished" rather than "reinterpreted". The effect, therefore, is that both the original track and the RPO arrangement come off as somehow competing with one another and almost unable to exist in the same space. I'd would suggest, that at a surface level, the one thing that people associate first and foremost with the Beach Boys is their vocal harmonies. Therefore, at the risk of being shouted down for sacrilege, they should have removed the original (and already excellent) instrumental tracks altogether, and then placed the vocal tracks over entirely new and reinterpreted RPO instrumental tracks. This would have sounded like a new and exciting reinterpretation rather than a simple/muddled embellishment. That being said, the one track where I think they do succeed marvelously is "Good Vibrations". In my opinion, they somehow managed to do the impossible by taking the perfect pop song / pocket symphony and then making it even better. Everything about it works for me. In fact, I'd have happily paid full price for the album for that one track alone. The California Suite is beautiful, Heroes & Villains interesting, The Warmth of the Sun is gorgeous, and In My Room reminds me of the old black and white footage of the Beach Boys performing In My Room with an orchestral backing back in 1963. Overall 3/5 stars.
