Fairly uninspired...zero meat on the bone, it’s all fat and bone, with a little sauce: pay a few big names, plug them in as necessary as advertising bait, fill gaps with subpar, overly-produced tracks, penned by someone else (I don’t know who would admit to writing these sleep-inducers)...release with accompanying statements re the endurance of said “R&B Artist”. [They really DO lump nearly every artist of colour into the ubiquitous “R&B” genre, even in the instance of music that’s neither the blues, nor particularly rhythmic. This is this tantamount to the implementation of the “pop” genre in categorising all “white” female artists <20 years old] I think this is less about an artist being so talented, multi-faceted and malleable, and in reality about contractual obligations, back-taxes, and good old-fashioned avarice

I’ve been a been a ne-yo fan since day one, and I’ve always supported his music, even when he released his red album which I would say is his worst album. Although I have to say, I was very disappointed by this album. When I first heard the single good man, I was so excited because I was happy that a mainstream rnb artist was returning to a more traditional sound while still making it modern enough for radio. My hype for the album increased when he released the singles push back and apology. I was like, he’s giving us a good balance of rnb and pop that both audiences will enjoy. Fast forward to today, and I almost feel completely different. Most traditional rnb fans who are familiar with ne-yo maybe glad not to here too much pop or trap on this album, but that the material itself pails in comparison to his previous work. I’m not saying that I expected it to be in my own words 2, but I just wished that there were more jems on this album. In his first three albums, it felt like he was going all out on every track, but here it just seems like tons of filler with only s few songs that really tie in with album’s main theme. I like what some of the songs are trying to go for, but feels like he doesn’t fully commit on each song. There are only two songs aside from the singles that stand out to me. Back chapters stands out because it ties with the main theme of the album and has great lyrics that really paints a picture. The other song is u deserve which is ne-yo at his finest. This song literally could have came out 10 years ago and could have been a hit. It reminds me that artists can still capture their retro sounds but still be current. The main issue with this album is that it just feels like a rough draft. It feels like he just went on the studio, recorded a bunch of songs, and put them on the album without fleshing them out. Either a song has too much production and substance, or a lot of substance without the proper amount of production to back it up. Its also frustrating because he released a song called Earn Ur love on his SoundCloud that just like u deserve, is classic ne-yo and would have been a great single. He also released another song with Candice Boyd and ravaughn brown called More than I should that illustrates how to make an rnb song that both fans who more traditional and fans who are more contemporary can enjoy. My only question is Why aren’t those songs on this album! They would sound great go radio and would play on both urban ac and contemporary stations. So in conclusion, I feel like this album could have been much better if he reduced the track number and flesh out his songs more, as well as adding those two songs from his SoundCloud. I mean seriously, why would purposely not add two great songs to an album that you know probably only has a few songs that would really do well on radio. At least good man has been number 1 on urban ac for 3 weeks. Hopefully he releases u deserve as a single because it dope. I’m not saying it’s a bad album, I’m saying that this is the last time I will get overly hyped for a ne-yo. If anyone is wondering I don’t think this album is as bad as the red album, or even libra scale. It just boring and I really wanted to love this album more. This album reminds me of how usher released 3 great singles but went on to release hard 2 love which many consider his worst since Raymond v. Raymond. Just saying.

I think so far Ne-yo has no bad albums every one is different in its own way and they are all amazing this one has a lot of faster beats and great vocals glad I bought it would buy again.
