Max Richter - Sleep

About Sleep by Max Richter Album

When the British composer Max Richter premiered Sleep in London in 2015, the concert lasted all night with audience members reclining on beds. That’s because Sleep is designed to induce just that. It’s not just that the piece for piano and strings is soft, gentle, and reassuringly consonant, or that it lasts eight hours—long enough, in other words, to last until dawn. While composing the piece, Richter consulted with sleep neuroscientist David Eagleman, folding cutting-edge research on slow-wave phases of sleep—states crucial to learning and memory—into the very shape of the work. The slow tempo is intended to have a lulling effect, drawing listeners into drowsiness and holding them there. In the opening movements, the music’s repetitive nature and recurring themes are subtly hypnotic, assisting listeners in clearing weary minds; as the piece goes on, instrumental and vocal outlines are worn away, leading to a quasi-ambient fog to accompany deep sleep. Every moment of this album’s sublime beauty is heightened and intensified without, of course, ever taking away from its restorative central premise. And for listeners who don’t want to miss any of that, a companion album, From Sleep, excerpts the most striking movements in a comparatively brief, one-hour dosage—enough time, perhaps, for a relaxing cup of tea.

- Simply Beautiful

A beautiful journey. Excellent for both relaxation and focus.

- Nick Jonas

Goes to sleep every night with this album

- Deep Sleep

Max Richter launches simple melodic themes and extends them to a degree reminiscent of Dennis Johnson's November--but with orchestration. Some passages bring to mind the lovliest choral work of Morton Feldman and Luigi Nono. One of the central melodies presents as a potential ear worm, but it gets woven into harmonies that eventually sublimate it.

- Calming

I have used this album to help me sleep since it came out, and it works quite often despite my insomnia.

- If you have a baby, get this! It’s a life-saver

I have no words to describe how much I love this album. You put it on when you put the baby to sleep, and it plays all night and its hypnotic rythms help keep the baby asleep all night long. Can help grown ups too, if you find you have a hard time getting a full night’s sleep! It’s literally the most soothing, relaxing work ever composed.

- Sleep by Max Richter

5 star composition 1 star recording! Terrible crackle interference on cuts 24/25. DG would Not have released this recording with these flaws. Apple digital is at fault. $34.00 for a revamp remaster electronically of what originally was a considered and sensitive interpretation by renowned DG recording engineers is sad. Richter would not be pleased either. All his work and his team of musicians. And then Apple puts it through their digitalgargleblaster and neglects to listen to it. I know, 8 hours of music. Tracks 24 and 25. 😎Listen tonight online to BBC Radio 3: Sleep by Max Richter at 11:00pm GMT. 6:00pm EST 3:00pm Pacific

- Hypnotic!

Ok so I probably haven’t made it all the way through this hypnotic cerebral meditation on sleep without .... falling asleep! Most tracks are very repetitive and metronomic but beautiful. Not recommended for listening to while driving - you’ll nod off!

- Pure masterpiece

Nothing else to say. Amazing piece of music!

- Melancholy alert

A recent bout of sciatica (excruciating pain in the middle of the night) brought me to this piece. But I think it's misnamed: there are plenty of moments where it wakes you up, and plenty more when it keeps you awake. I love it - thank you, Max Richter - but if you're not a fan of the melancholic, keep away.

- Definitely recommend

I love this album great for reading at night and times of stress it’s my go to chill out album at first I thought it was a bit expensive but it’s worth every penny

- Sleep by Max Richter

This music is absolutely wonderful. I watched the documentary about its creation and performances. A very heavenly experience, thank you.

- Another world

I find that Return 2 and many others take me out of my body.........quite , quite stunning ...thank you

- Sometimes torturous

I love Max Richter and do like this, but if I never hear that piano phrase again it’ll be too soon.

Sleep Wiki

Sleep is a state of reduced mental and physical activity in which consciousness is altered and certain sensory activity is inhibited. During sleep, there is a marked decrease in muscle activity and interactions with the surrounding environment. While sleep differs from wakefulness in terms of the ability to react to stimuli, it still involves active brain patterns, making it more reactive than a coma or disorders of consciousness. Sleep occurs in repeating periods, during which the body alternates between two distinct modes: REM and non-REM sleep. Although REM stands for "rapid eye movement", this mode of sleep has many other aspects, including virtual paralysis of the body. Dreams are a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. During sleep, most of the body's systems are in an anabolic state, helping to restore the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems; these are vital processes that maintain mood, memory, and cognitive function, and play a large role in the function of the endocrine and immune systems. The internal circadian clock promotes sleep daily at night, when it is dark. The diverse purposes and mechanisms of sleep are the subject of substantial ongoing research. Sleep is a highly conserved behavior across animal evolution, likely going back hundreds of millions of years, and originating as a means for the brain to cleanse itself of waste products. In a major breakthrough, researchers have found that this cleansing may be a core purpose of sleep. Humans may suffer from various sleep disorders, including dyssomnias, such as insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea; parasomnias, such as sleepwalking and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder; bruxism; and circadian rhythm sleep disorders. The use of artificial light has substantially altered humanity's sleep patterns. Common sources of artificial light include outdoor lighting and the screens of electronic devices such as smartphones and televisions, which emit large amounts of blue light, a form of light typically associated with daytime. This disrupts the release of the hormone melatonin needed to regulate the sleep cycle.
