I have Mutter/Ma's first version from 40 years ago...youthful and yet guided by Master Karajan. Musically, this is the mature version. The nature of the piece is more about the violin and cello engaging in dialogue while the piano is much of the time doing its own thing, i.e. it is not really like a piano trio with orchetral accompaniment. That dialogue between Mutter and Ma is masterfully and sensistively accomplished. But the recording, per se, undoes the music. Mutter's normally sumptuous violin tone seems thin and stringy while Ma...who is pretty much given the right speaker all to himself...produces some very rich and mature tone. In fact the recording is very full in the bass clef...whether with the soloist or the orchestra. But the recording is not laid out well from an engineering standpoint. Mutter is slightly to the left of center while Ma is in an acoustical closet of the right speaker. So the recording production distracts from and undoes the music. Musically, the concerto has much to recommend it...lots of Beethovenian energy and a 3rd movement taken at a faster than usual clip. But it's like you have to discover the music inspite of the recording. The symphony is played well enough, but the recording seems unfocusedand...the upper strings are not balanced with the lower. So, bottom line, what might have been a spectacular contribution to this Beethoven Year is, for me, quite disappointing...not musically...but by crumby mike placement and horrible insensitive balance in the cotnrol room. Don't blame it on live recording; the BPO sounds better than this in almost ANY recording from the "digital concert hall." Disclaimer: I think this recording was made by a 3rd party production team and then sold to DGG...it is just not up to the DGG standard.

Beethoven’s triple concerto performed masterfully, to me, this is an excellent live recording of this concerto. But the symphony, nothing new about that performance. Very old fashioned and some how dated performance. Three star just for the concerto. Only if iTunes let us buy the concerto....
