I'm sorry. I came into this thinking that this could be a great album but it seems to be a lame classical parody. For god's sake--enunciate! It does no good to project your voice if we can't understand you. I gave this one star because there is no lower mark but this tired dog needs to be put to sleep.

It took me a while to ‘get’ this CD. When I first picked it up I was expecting something more along the lines of Fleming’s jazz recording, Haunted Heart, as this CD was in the jazz section of the store and Brad Mehldau is a well known jazz composer/performer. This CD could be nothing further from that. The compositions are a strange fusion between classical music and jazz, lying more on the classical side. I would actually venture to call the music “jazz lieder”. The music is obviously very intelligently structured, although Mehldau hasn't yet found his signature sound yet. The songs boast some of the best lyrics of any art songs around drawing from Rainer Maria Rilke's philosophical poems. Mehldau responses to the texts are thoughtful and varied in texture. Unfortunately, much of the language gets lost in Fleming’s performance. And although I am a Fleming fan, I don’t think she was able to connect with these pieces. Her performance, although containing a polished steady sound, seemed too dignified, too cool, too detached. The songs needed a little more grit, a little more pain in them to give them life. I give Mehldau full marks for his writing but the performance itself is wanting. This CD is worth a listen if you are interested in innovative composition but you won’t walk away with the music in your head or your heart.

When a friend of mine told me this album was released, I came to check it out and downloaded several samples and then bought the full title song. Brad Mehldau is one of my most highly respected musical icons and I know Ms. Fleming can sing, however the voice is recorded in such an digitally abrasive, metallic and unpleasant way that one needs very "merciful" speakers to not be annoyed by it's appearance. I checked out the album on good quality headphones and I am again absolutely dismayed since the presentation of the vocals won't let me into this album. You cannot hear the softer words Fleming forms --although I can (sort of) tell she is articulating them - they just don't make it to the surface. Very poor engineering for my ears (I'm a studio engineer and producer) - the problems of some people who couldn't understand the lyrics could -and should - have been addressed at the same time.

this is some of the most gorgeous music ive ever heard renee sing. amazingly gorgeous.
