John Mayer - Continuum

About Continuum by John Mayer Album

Continuum is the third studio album by American musician John Mayer, released September 12, 2006 on Columbia Records. Recording sessions for the album took place during November 2005 to September 2006 at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, California, Avatar Studios and Right Track/Sound on Sound in New York City, and Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Production was handled primarily by Mayer and Steve Jordan. It marked a change in Mayer's musical style, and incorporated musical elements of blues and soul more heavily than in his previous work with pop-rock. The album debuted at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 300,186 copies in its first week. It also reached the top-ten in several other countries and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Upon its release, Continuum received generally positive reviews from most music critics and earned Mayer several accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 49th Grammy Awards. Rolling Stone magazine named it the eleventh best album of 2006. Background Mayer made the decision to name his third album Continuum at least a year before the album was released. In his column in the April 2005 issue of Esquire, Mayer wrote, "I'm obsessed with time lately, constantly crunching the numbers to get some sense of where I stand in the continuum." In his column in the September 2005 issue of Esquire he confirmed the title, writing, "I've never experienced anything like the recording process involved in making Continuum, my third-album-to-be. The album features mainly new songs, though "Gravity" and "Vultures" are available in live versions from John Mayer Trio's Try!, and "Bold as Love", which is a Jimi Hendrix cover: the first Hendrix cover that Mayer has ever recorded as a studio release (although Mayer has recorded other Hendrix songs over time in live settings such as "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Wait Until Tomorrow"). (Mayer had played "Bold as Love" live many times prior to the release of Continuum such as on the televised Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope which aired on January 15, 2005.) The album contains a collaboration between Mayer and 8-string guitarist Charlie Hunter on the tune "In Repair". The song "Stop this Train" was written during a time of, what Mayer calls, "solitary refinement;" He was in bed suffering from double kidney stones, and living in a hotel while finding a new residence. Cover art The word "Continuum" is showcased across the center. The typography for the title was customized to give the letters "C" and "o" the appearance of an infinity symbol: ∞. Many of the following letters touch in some way; the right vertical line of the second "u" is the left vertical line of the "m" in the title. The album has been released several times with slight differences in the artwork. The three major releases feature, respectively: A photo of Mayer; a silver cover with a white title; and a Local 83-only version (including a silver bag). The first features a dark gray-scale photograph of Mayer with the title near the top; another is identical except for "featured" centered across the top. Some versions feature only a CD. In these cases, the album features Mayer on the cover. When the album is packaged with a jewel casing, the inside cover is all white with the "Continuum" logo printed very faintly on it. The basic CD is white with off-white letters that slides into a slipcase of deep gray with lettering in light gray and blue/green. During the pre-order, it appeared as though there would be a variation of said artwork on a special edition version, and it turned out that the "special packaging" was a shiny silver bag which held the CD and the pre-order bonuses. All artwork was designed by Mayer along with Smog Design, Inc. The inside of the CD sleeve includes photographs, some taken by Mayer, such as of the studio (where Mayer's handwriting describes, "*this is what my heart looks like*") and a Ferris wheel where Mayer's handwriting is imposed over the top of the photograph, featuring the lyrics to his songs. There is also a photograph of Mayer with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan (the three who comprise the John Mayer Trio) on a beach. The CD sleeve features the lyrics to all of Continuum's songs. With both Heavier Things and Room for Squares, there were incongruities with the lyrics in the sleeves when compared with the albums; however, the Continuum lyrics are all printed exactly as recorded on the album. The UK version of Continuum features a photograph of Mayer on the cover. This cover was used for promotional releases, such as when Mayer performed live on the Australian television program Rove Live. The alternative cover was presented for television by the show's host Rove McManus. In November 2007, a special edition of Continuum was released. The cover for the special edition features a grey background and silver text for the title, with the Columbia Records logo in black instead of white. However, the line "Music by John Mayer" remains the same teal color as on the regular release. The cover layout is the same. Release and Promotion By the time of release, Mayer had performed almost all of the songs live at least once, either with a full band or alone in an acoustic set during the Hotel Cafe shows from the previous winter. On August 23, 2006, the entire Continuum album was played on Los Angeles radio station STAR 98.7, with the segment hosted by Mayer himself. He repeated the event for different media outlets several more times before the album's September release, such as "Sneak Peek" through Clear Channel Music; he also performed three songs live for Sessions@AOL. Subsequently, the album was made available for streaming on Clear Channel Music website and for pre-purchase on iTunes, all prior to the album's official release. The iTunes pre-release included the exclusive bonus track, "Can't Take That Plane". A limited edition EP of "Waiting on the World to Change" was released featuring the album version of the song. The EP includes a bonus acoustic version which features Ben Harper, as well as a studio recording of "Good Love is on the Way", a live version of which was released on the John Mayer Trio's Try!. The Ben Harper version of "Waiting on the World to Change" and an alternative acoustic-only version of "Good Love is on the Way" are also available on Mayer's subsequent release, the EP The Village Sessions. The first single, "Waiting on the World to Change," was released on July 11, 2006. The music video for the song was directed by Philip Andelman and features Mayer walking along the East River while graffiti artists Futura, Tats Cru, and Daze graffiti messages on New York City billboards displaying messages relating to the song's content. On February 22, 2007, Continuum's second single, "Gravity", entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #71, joining the already charting "Waiting on the World to Change", making for two Continuum singles on the Hot 100 at the same time. It was featured in the soundtrack for the television series House in 2008. "Waiting" entered the Billboard's Hot 100 Digital Songs Chart at #63. It has sold 68,115 in digital downloads since its release. Mayer performed the single "Gravity" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards with fellow musicians Corinne Bailey Rae and John Legend. "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" is the third official single release from Continuum, and was released for ads at Hot AC and Triple A radio on July 9, 2007. On November 20, 2007, a special edition of Continuum was released that included a bonus disc of six live tracks and a 20-page booklet containing photos from the tour. Five of the songs are live versions of tracks from Continuum, including all of its singles. A sixth song, "I Don't Need No Doctor", was originally performed by Ray Charles; Mayer previously performed the song as part of his set with the John Mayer Trio. The single "Say" (from The Bucket List soundtrack) was also made available on the CD through an online download unlock function. The tracks were produced by Mayer's engineer Chad Franscoviak. The album was reissued on Columbia Records on April 8, 2008, with the single "Say" being added directly on the disc. A vinyl lp version of this reissue was also released, on two 180-gram discs. Commercial Performance Continuum debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at #2 with 300,186 copies sold. It never reached #1, impeded by the Justin Timberlake album FutureSex/LoveSounds, which was released at the same time. As on November 2009, Continuum has sold 2,800,000 copiesin the U.S. and is Mayer's third consecutive multi-platinum selling studio album. It stayed in the top 100 of Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 50 weeks (37 of those weeks were in the top 50). Worldwide, it has moved more than 3 million copies. In Canada, the album debuted at #2 on the official Albums Chart and is certified platinum for sales of 100,000 copies. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Continuum was the fourth best selling digital album for 2006 in Canada. With no lead single in Australia, Continuum debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at #12, his lowest debut in Australia to date (Room for Squares debuted at #5 and Heavier Things at #4). Continuum was the ninety-eighth best selling album for 2006 on the ARIA (ARIA) Albums Chart. It has been certified gold by ARIA for sales of 35,000 copies and had stayed on ARIA's Top 100 Albums chart for 34 weeks before exiting the chart. Continuum held the record for the most album downloads in history with over 326,000 copies downloaded until June 29, 2008, when it was surpassed by the Coldplay album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. On February 22, 2007, the lead single, "Waiting on the World to Change", peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, where it stayed for forty-one weeks. To date in the U.S., the single has sold 1,632,137 in digital downloads, and was certified platinum by the RIAA when it crossed the one-million mark in sales. After a month of release, the single peaked at #17 on the Australian ARIA Top 40 Digital Track Chart on November 19, 2006. Critical Reception Continuum received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 67, based on 18 reviews. Matt Collar of Allmusic called it "a gorgeously produced, brilliantly stripped-to-basics album that incorporates blues, soft-funk, R&B, folk and pop in a sound that is totally owned by Mayer." Mojo called it a "great blue-eyed soul record." Ann Powers of the Los Angeles Times commented that Mayer is "best when treading softly, finding the fluid heart of blue-eyed soul", rather than on more "angst"-filled songs. Bryan Borzykowski of Now felt that " melodic voice, warm production, complex riffs and thoughtful lyrics should cure the violent reactions Mayer's name used to evoke." MSN Music's Robert Christgau gave Continuum a three-star honorable mention ((3-star Honorable Mention)), indicating "an enjoyable effort consumers attuned to its overriding aesthetic or individual vision may well treasure". He cited "Waiting on the World to Change" and "The Heart of Life" as highlights and quipped, "Saying in so many words what his less-gifted, more-pretentious contemporaries think it's cool to camouflage". Anthony DeCurtis, writing in Rolling Stone, called it "a smart, breezy album that deftly fuses his love for old-school blues and R&B with his natural gift for sharp melodies and well-constructed songs." The magazine later ranked it the eleventh best album of 2006. In a mixed review, Slant Magazine's Jonathan Keefe wrote that, "with no edge to the songwriting and with such spit-polished, tasteful production, Continuum just doesn't convince as a heady, soulful rock album or as Mayer's creative quantum leap forward". Jody Rosen, writing for Entertainment Weekly, felt that Mayer is too "classy" and wrote that, although the songs are "shapely" and "the musicianship is elegant and virtuosic", the music's "low-key loveliness dissipates into a sleep-inducing soft-rock haze." Stylus Magazine stated that Mayer "calmly circles the same career themes with the same warmed-over, palatable guitar weavings". Q magazine called it "dour stuff reminiscent of a yogic Sting." - Put one in the air for Mayer!

really chill to bake too

- Masterpiece

This is one of the greatest albums ever made. Every track speaks for itself and together it creates one of the finest musical works in the genre.

- Absolute perfection

Words cannot describe how perfect this album truly is. I love how calm and chill all of these songs are, and I love all the meaning he's put behind the lyrics. Seriously, my most favourite album he's ever released. Absolutely perfect!!!!!!!!!!!

- favorite album

Best album of all time. John Mayer has a touch that no one can duplicate and this album represents his talent amazingly.

- Smooth and real

I love how soft and cutback the tracks are. Each song contains smooth and impressive acoustic performances with soft and catchy percussion backing it up. John Mayer's throaty yet appealing voice also has the same effect that tells you this is real.

- Sharing His Bluesier Side

Artist's like John HAVE to keep moving in different directions - Usually that is a recipe for unpopular feedback by fans. Mayer manages to do it so well in this album, that he not only brings-in a new audience, he compels the original core fans to happily jump aboard a train heading in a new direction. Brilliant.

- AMAZING!

I love this album so much!!!!!

- 3,808th Review

Superb, straightforward musicianship, stewardship. Give me more, John.

- Luv John Mayer

Mood Music, Luv his messages✌✌

- Mayer's best album to date

This album embodies everything that John Mayer is about. While he has changed his style of music recently, nothing will beat Continuum for me because it is his most solid body of work. The bluesy rasp in his voice and his guitar skills are at its best and each song is one I would listen to on any given day. There's not a single song I'd skip over and that is hard to do in an album. I wish he would go back to his roots and make another album such as this one. Regardless, I'm still a big fan. My standout tracks are Belief, Gravity, Vultures, Slow Dancing In a Burning Room, Dreaming With a Broken Heart, and In Repair.

- BUY THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW

John Mayer is a legend and this album just shows it. The lyrics are beautifully crafted and his ability to reach and touch others with his lyrics is unbelievable. Mayer shows his true craft, playing the guitar during solo's in songs such as Gravity. I would recommend this album to any age at any time. Probably my favorite musical album out there, definitely my favorite artist.

- 😍😍😍

😘😘😘

- ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's 2016, and I'm still listening and loving this album! It is by far his best one.

- John Mayer is incredible!

Perfect

- He knows

He just gets it. He's constantly growing as an artist. That's key- but he does it so well!

- Great app to use on the iPhone

Yes anything I will you to get a ride to you to come great today or tomorrow when I can do anything

- One of the best albums of the 00s

This remains my favorite album by John Mayer, because his songs possibly mean even more to me now than they did 10 years ago. My personal preferences aside, YOU should buy this album for the lush R&B stylings of John Mayer and the fabulous session musicians. There is not a filler track on this album. Everything fits together and all of them have emotional pull with the possible exception of "Say" which is standard pop and a bit repetitive. The 4 songs that open the album are great and are the ones you're most likely to be familiar with, but "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" is the standout track for me. It's a blistering ballad where the music sets the mood perfectly. "Stop this Train" gets me every time and it appeals to both young adults afraid of getting older as well as older adults watching younger generations struggle with the challenges of growing up..."Vultures" is just plain GROOVY. I was serious when I said in my opinion this might be the best album released between 2000 and 2010 by ANY artist...oh, and if you like this album then you will LOVE John Mayer Trio's TRY album for a live concert album full of "Bold as Love" style wailing guitar solos from an underrated guitarist in John Mayer...I wish he'd get back to R&B as I prefer it to his previous pop and his current folky stylings. BUY THIS ALBUM. $5.99 is a STEAL for such a masterpiece!

- Classic

This good

- Wow

Wow. Just wow.

- Continuum

This album is simply the greatest piece of work JM has ever done. This album has captured a certain time in JM's career where he was at the top. Not only at the top of his song writing but also at the top of his guitar playing. This album is the closest thing to a perfect album that I've ever seen, and with classic songs like waiting and slow dancing this album has to be the greatest album of John's career. I would encourage everyone to buy this album get a bottle of wine and sit down by the fire and listen to every song it's a life changing experience for you and your ears. PS thx john for creating continuum.

- Timeless!

Loved this album 10 years ago, and I still love it just as much now!

- All Time Favorite

I decided to review this album after its release almost 8 YEARS AGO. Continuum i consider to be one of the top 10 greatest albums ever made. Not one song on here is bad… it fits any mood your in happy, sad, mad, whatever. I don’t think i know anyone who does not like this album. All you can really say is true genius from Mayer’s part!

- All Time Favorite

This is one of my all-time favorite albums across all genres.

- Continuum

This is one of my personal favorite John Mayer albums. This album has a great flow, track after track. This album also has great vocals, great drum solos, and great guitar solos as well. Finally, the instruments wrap around the vocals like no other, and intertwine perfectly. Definitely looking forward to the next limited play album, and extended play album from John Mayer.

- 🙌

💖💖✊🌸🌸🙌🙌🌸👏👏👏💎

- Dreaming

Broken hearted

- His masterpiece

John’s first three albums were his pinnacle. This was the apex.

- Legit

Regardless of how you feel about him as a person or his legion of young female fans, this album is legit. Mature and soulful. The track Gravity is worth the price of the whole album, but there are plenty of other accomplished pieces here to make own the entire album more than worthwhile.

- Yes.

So much win.

- Spectacular, well thought out album

While this is John Mayer's third album, he somehow keeps it fresh and doesn't fall into the trap of writing the same song over and over, running it into the ground to make hits. This is definitely not a follow up to Room for Squares or Heavier Things. This album was all about perfection in Mayer's eyes and it shows. This album is well thought out and there's not an out of place song in this album. He keeps his music fresh with great chord progressions and beautiful delivery. You can really feel the music. John Mayer is one of the few pop artists that don't compromise musicality for hits. This album is proof that your music doesn't have to be cookie cutter to sell. Great album that I would most definitely recommend buying!

- Superb

Soulful, soothing, funky, bright(at times), and depressing at others, continuum embodies every aspect of what us humans experience in life. The heart of life especially connects with the longing of assurance that life is not in vain. This is John’s best album content and sound wise.

- Amazing.

In my opinion, one of the best albums ever made. Lyrics, straight-forward production, amazing musicianship, melodies. Everything is there.

- One of the best!

One of the best record.... pure Blues and perfection......

- Unlikely Classic

This album is a great slice of what folk-rock is all about. My mom has compared this to the work of the Grateful Dead. Great guitar work by Mayer, with lovely jazz touches. The opener is an instant classic, while "Gravity" is superbly beautiful. Even the Jimi Hendrix cover rocks. My only problem is with the closing track.

- Changed My Life

John, one day i'll see you on stage next to me

- CONTINUUM IS REALLY GOOD

I love this album there isn't a john mayer song I don't like

- One star raters for john

Whoever had any thought or nerve to write a bad review for john mayer has no taste in music. His work is heaven to my ears. Nobody has any room to make a negative comment about this perfect set of songs

My favorite songs are Stop This Train, Slow Dancing In a Burning Room, Dreaming with A Broken Heart & In Repair. But really, I change every day because they are all perfect (L)

- Atta boy JM

I love John Mayer's music and Continuum is no exception.. beautiful voice, lyrics you can relate to, and a great sound. Completely worth it.

- Disappointment

It has been 70 years that i have been listening to John Mayer an i love it but his last album is horrible. It has no beat, no depth and no enthusiasm! From your greatest fan: Grammy Patty. Hi john are you married?

- Mayer is great.

WOW ! to get to the point... i love each and every single song... i am blown away... and i will always be a mayer fan.

- bought because i heard it from tv.

the only reason i bought i heard his song waiting for the whole world to change , well the rest of the song need to change.

- John Mayer is amazing

John Mayer is by far the best singer i have ever heard, his voice is pure and not mixed and machined and he is an amazing guitarist and he will keep geting beter and i cant wait for his next album. JOHN MAYOR IS THE BEST!!!

- fantastic!

this is beautiful! I love every song. what a powerful comeback! Look out Jack Johnson

- Awesome Album

Definately one of my favorite albums of the year.... Vultures is my favourite track...

- Lyrics/Soul

Honestly, you really see how soulful John Mayer is in this album! If you really listen to some of the lyrics, you can tell how talented John Mayer is. I mean, he writes his music: amiazingly. He sings his music: great! And he writes his lyrics: AMAZINGLY!!! This has to be my fave album by John Mayer. I highly reccomend songs: gravity, the heart of life, stop this train, dreaming with a broken heart, in repair (listen to the lyric at the end) and I'm gonna find another you (for you soulful people). I hope my review helps! If anyone thinks it's his worst album yet, or "dry" i think you're wrong. And only apreciate the more "commecial" John Mayer. The pop one. This is both soulful and inspirational, don't just listen to the music, listent to the lyrics. At first, I didn't like this CD at all. I thought it was boring. But I listened to it a lot over and over again in my dad's car, and boy, was I wrong. Buy it, or at least a few songs and listen to it a few times, you won't regret it!

- Fantastic!

So I must admit that this is my first album from John Mayer. I had only heard his hits on the radio but friends got me into him more and so I figured it wouldn't hurt to pick up his newest CD. I was not disappointed. He is soulful, creative and his music, aside from being beautiful, catchy and memorable, has amazing lyrics to go along with it. Some of my favourites are #'s 2, 3, 6,7 and 8 but overall the entire CD is worth listening to again and again - the second time is better than the first. Definitely would recommend this!

- Love it

Only song I personally don't like is vultures, but every other song is excellent. Best John Mayer album yet.

- Absolutly Amazing

John exceeds himself in this album. Every song from start to finish is a great listen, and the lyrics are profound and very well written. This is a must have.

- god, its GENIOUS

This album is just AMAZING!!!!!! He's not my favourite singer, but he's right up there!! He has SOO much talent, and this album displays it all!!! I don't think i can find a single song there i don't like, but here are my faves: Waiting on the World To Change---how can you NOT like it????? let me ask you this. Belief-great lyrics, music, just PERFECT. Stop this train----SOOOO GOOOOODDDDD

- The Blues are not dead yet!

So many of us have forgotten just how good the blues were or are. John Mayer is the savior. A true modern day guitar god (don't believe me, try play along to the try album) Mayer perhaps will make the blues cool again and others will hopefully follow. This is music with a purpose and I love it to death. Go Mayer!

- Wow

I love John Mayor, most of his songs are filled with compassion they have meaning in them. I can't sing that well and I usually don't but when I hear his songs they make me want to sing and set my ipod on repeat. His songs make me feel pure and happy.

- Good enough... I guess

I think he is great but not his best ever

- A beautiful, timeless album!

In my opinion this is John's best album yet! I bought the album when it came out in September, and I still listen to it daily on my iPod. Each song on the album is unique and showcases John's brilliant guitar playing and smooth and soothing voicing! My favourites include "Belief", "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" and "Bold as Love". The guitar parts on these songs are phenomenal. My all-time favourite on the album is "Stop This Train". The song is slow, beautiful, and meaningful. I love the lines "I'm so scared of getting older, I'm so good at being young." That's exactly how I feel at this stage in my life. I couldn't have said it better myself! If you have a chance, go see John play live! I saw John play in Toronto and the Continuum songs are incredible live! Thank you John for making such beautiful, inspiring music!

- Hendrixosity

When I first heard Gravity, I could see Mayer had the guitar style of Hendrix, not knowing that he idolized him or did a cover of Hendrix's Bold As Love, which is terrific by the way. Mayer's sound used to be too soft for me, but now that he's found this new blues sound, it's a must buy for a Hendrix fanatic.

- <3 In Love <3

I am head over heels for this new album! Continuum is defidently the best I've heard in ages. This is amazing music and YOU SHOULD BUY IT!

- !Amazing!

By far, the best album I have downloaded yet. I can't listen to one song without hearing the others. I totally love it and there is nothing bad to say. My favorite song is "Belief" for sure, but I love them all. Way to go John!!!!!!

- INSTANT CLASSIC

John mayer's evolution as an artist has been remarkable with his slow rising debut (Room For Squares), his stumbles (Heavier Things), and his remarkable return. John was right when he said, "With a trilogy, the third in the series always blows it open."

- Simply Amazing

This CD is nothing short of brilliant, I would recomend it to anyone.

- Dry album

This is a dry album. Really I always apreciate John's music to day. Well played by John, Pino and Steve. But boring. Linear. I'm sure that John himself will someday wake up and try to forget this one. The previous album, Try!, is hot. It rocks, sound fat, alive and dynamic. Continuum does not. The Cover is gray and so is the music. Can't wait for the next one. Sorry.

- Awsome...except for Waiting on the World to Change

John Mayer's album is awsome!!! Belief is one of my favourite songs! The only bad part about this album is Waiting for the World to Change. It's so repetitive and its just not a good song!!

- Great Modern Songwriting

Thank you for this album!! I didnt think anybodycould write good music these days. Best song is Gravity, but the whole album is really amazing. If you dont buy this you are making a huge mistake.

- So Goode

Buy it.

- BORING!

This is boring... don't buy this buy Children of Bodom or Dream Theater

- Too White & Too Young To Be This Good!!

I wasn't a big john Mayer fan before this album. I liked Bigger Than My Body but I wasn't over the top about him. Continuum though makes me worship the guy. He's barely 30 and he can channel Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix and SRV and that it blows me away!! He sings and plays with such convincing soul that my review title stands;he's too white too be this soulful and far to young to be writing such amazingly insightful lyrics(especialy a song like Belief). Not one bad song on this album.

- Inspiring

I was not a big fan until I caught John on the Letterman show years ago sittin' in with Shaefer and the band.....man this kid can play!!!! This album front to back is amazing! Songwriting, production, you name it. One of the few albums out today that is worth every penny beginning to end. I have listened to it many times over and it's not getting old any time soon. Albums like this are one of the reasons I strive to be a better musician. AV

- Finally an album, not just 3 singles

this CD is one of the best that i own, and i own a LOT of music. I stopped buying complete albums as usually a few are great, and the rest is just filler. This is not like that, it is fantastic from start to finish. buy it, you won;t regret it. great job john mayer!!! 'I don't trust myself' is one of the sexiest songs ever.

- continuum

great music

- THIS RECORD WILL GO DOWN AS A CLASSIC.

Perhaps the best record I've ever owned in my life. Think about how big a statement that is. This is coming from a guy who was never really a John Mayer fan earlier on. From start to finish, the record is a modern masterpiece.

- Worth every penny...

I bought this CD for my dad for christmas, and since I had to take all the plastic off to take the price off, decided to put it onto my iTunes. I've previously been a big fan of the likes of Moby, Sigur Ros, Explosions In the Sky... and still am, however this album is a welcome addition to my collection. Absolutely fantastic, I loved every song upon the first listen. Very easy listening, would heartily reccomend to others.

- No filler aloud

Every single track is 100% in the moment and as a songwriter that means you have a lot of new kids to look after. Good luck with all those new babies JM. You're an awesome Daddy!

- It's ALL GOOD

John Mayer is a first class songwriter and guitarist - this is my favorite album in YEARS...

- A soul mate

I am sooo happy with the new CD! I anxiously await anything that JM puts out. The music is so powerful and soul filling. In the music, I hear the sincere emotions that we all experience and feel a tightness in my chest and a filling of my soul. After a tough day at the hospital, all I need to do is put on John's music and it all melts away. Keep up the great work John, and I will always be a devoted soul mate.

- speechless

Wow, this album is truly the best he has come up with. I can understand why, now, it takes artists such as John Mayer to take so long to release an album. He really puts himself into his music. I love it, and cant get enough of it! Everyone should have this album on their iPods!! =D

- The best album

John keap up the good work..you rock!!!!!!!! I am telling you this album rocks,I say its the best album he ever did.

- Stellar!!

This album is fabulous and is his best work to date. JM continues to grow, amazing me with his tremendous talent that is fare beyond his 29 years! A must have for any blues fan. Jimi & Stevie would both be proud!

- First purchase

Well, this was my first purchase on iTunes. Man, this album is dynamite. Thank you John Mayer.

- 1 Grammy - Year 1, 2 Grammies - Year 2, 3 Grammies This Year?

I think that this album will be nominated for album of the year and personally, I think it should win. Albums like this are rare, very rare!

- This is so good it's tear-inducing

I'm not even gonna lie, I feel like crying when I listen to slow dancing in a burning room. the man knows his way around a heartfelt lyric, that's for damn sure! this cd is one of the few cds i've actually been motivated to buy lately. it's so beyond good. GO JOHN!

- Top top top app

Well done people........... :-)

- AWESOME!

A must-listen-to for any music fan. I am a convert of John's music talent from way back, so, ok I'm biased, but seriously, his lyrics and musical journey in this album is thoughtful, inspiring and jovial as well as a couple of "pulling at the heart string" songs to breakup the theme. John roams from country style twangs to the fantastic remake of Hendrix' "Bold as Love". I gotta say this is just a fantastic album that you must try! My No.1 for this album has got to be "Stop this Train" - I only hope in the tour of Australia this Novemeber he can manage to get over the emotional and personal nature of this song to share it with us live....Love your work, John xxxxx

- Amazing

I believe this album shows John Mayer's growth as an artist and a guitarist. This is the album he wanted to make. Each song in itself is absolutely amazing, the voice and how it conveys sadness, his guitar solos and his lyrics. I saw him perform this album live and I was blown away by how skilled he is on the guitar and how much passion he executed it with. This album is very different from his previous ones and some fans may not like that but this is mellow and bluesy, a toned down version of what the trio produced. Even those who aren't John Mayer fans will be able to appreciate this album.

- My wife loves John Mayer

Another great album to enjoy. Smooth and easy to listen to, you will love it.

- His Best Yet...

If it was possible to give 10 stars, I would. Mayer is amazing and this album just goes to show how much he has evolved since his last 2. I cannot wait to see him live in concert in April!! Thankyou for the wonderful music John.

- Sensational

I wasn't very fond of Mayer till this album; it was an absoloute sensation. The album felt like a storybook; instigating a myriad of thoughts, emotions and messages within the listener, but the beauty is that it isn't complex and Mayer totally puts the listeners at ease. I feel like I can take these songs as a deep message or to just chill out. Sensational!

- My Favourite Album of All Time!!!!!!

THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER CREATED IN THE HISTORY OF PLANET EARTH!!!!

- CONTINUUM his best ever!!!

Finally the long awaited album is here!!! I'm in love with his music from the beginning!!! this album is yet another prove of his great musical talent!!! love him!!!

- Simply Superb.

Yet another superb album from the master songwriter. John Mayer has yet again managed to capture our hearts with a mellow, easy-to-listen-to, chillout styling. He truly makes the guitar speak. Kudos, John! I absolutely love it.

- Brilliant better than thriller.

All time best John Mayer Hard to top this even if you are John Mayer it's iconic Mayer Captain America John Mayer at his best this is a legends CD tops all CDs hands down. Johns the man to beat if you can

- A Must Have

amazing guitar player & songwriter

- Brilliant

Must have. Brilliant songs.

- JM art

This Album is one that you put on and listen in order from first to last track. John has said he deliberated long and hard about the placement of the tracks and in some way it tells a story. I am not sure what the story is, but of all the John Mayer albums I have, and I have them all. Continuum is the only one I play from start to finish. There are many sides to John Mayer and this album showcases some of them and gives you glimpses of what is yet to come from this talented guy. enjoy.

- Beautiful voices in my head

This is quiet possibly the most brilliant album I have heard in ages. I can hear Clapton, Stevie Ray and Stephen Bishop, and hear ideas on the world from someone in my own age group. Magical dripping notes from a heavy heart with a twist of hope and romance. I'm not taking this off all Summer in Oz. Beautiful

- Great Come Back from John Mayer!

SUPERB!!! that's how I describe his latest album. With more blues in it and combined with good lyrics, and more mature, also mixed John Mayer's original style....that is Continuum.

- Lovin' this guy... again

John Mayer, a more natural singer/songwriter/musician with a talent for a good groove is hard to find. John you rock (as the genre suggests) with a deep passion for the blues, funk and soulfull rhythm and feel.

- 10 x win!

This is freaking amazing! This and 'rush of blood to the head' are the only two albums that I've given 10/10 to! I like cheese!

- Definitely Room For Continuum

If you like John Mayer get this album. Although its not traditional John like on Room For Squares but if you like his original stuff and the John Mayer Trio album you'll most likely fall in love with it like the rest of us. Bceause Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino did besically every song with John on this album it's very "Trio" and jazz but still a wonderful album and definitely a keeper.

- Amazing

Amazingly mind blowing GREAT musician. Loving more and more of his work.

- Awesome!

A really enjoyable album, great lyrics, and impressive performances by all the musicians... Love every song!

- Fantastic Progression

Some of the best music you can get your hands on. Incredible album from an incredible musician. Effortlessly groovy and soulful. Dangerously melodic. Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan provide an incredibly solid bedrock from which Mayer builds his songs, and them polishes them to shine. Buy the album, they are all stand out tracks.

- Brilliant album

This is a great album. I bought it cos I really liked the current single, and of course because he won the grammies. I've got his other albums which are okay, but this one is so much better than anything previous. I've been listening to this non stop since I bought it. Particularly like 'Vultures', a great song to grove along too. Highly recommend it.

- spectacular

A moving album which only further showcases the extreme talent of this man !! Thanks for the music John

- Songwriting is not a crime

You know when an album is going to be good when you hear the lead single and think to yourself - man, i cant wait till i hear where the rest of this is going. Continuum is an excellent example of where the blues power trio meets pop, and the result is close to perfect. Vocals are good, lyrics sublime, guitar work impressive as ever (its not hard to hear the SRV/EC/JH inlfuence). The only reason for not achieving 5 stars is cause the track with Charlie Hunter (the inlfuence for Neon) doesn't allow the man who plays an 8 string guitar (!) to really shine... listen to his cover of Bob Marley's Natty Dread to hear one of the best Jazz albums of all time! Peace.

- Mayer: A Continuum of Talent

This man is a songwriting god. His lyrics are full of thought, soul and life experience. If you loved his last two best-selling albums and you are a true Mayer fan, you will love his latest album. But, give it time to grow on you. It is more produced than his other albums and perhaps a little less about the acoustic guitar than his older fans may like, but there is still the underlying soul and passion of the musician we all love. He has changed his sound a little, (there is a hint of jazz throughout the album) but there is nothing wrong with a musician evolving and discovering new sounds.

- John has done it again!

This is another another great album from John Mayer. If you've liked his other albums i suggest you get this one. I hope John comes back to Aus for another tour!!

- John's Manifesto...

The "Continuum" album is a real culmination of John's talent with a guitar... there is alot blues and jazz influence while still sticking to that strong guitar sound! Each song is individual and fantastic in its own right! For me the standout track is "Gravity"... I get it! and I think there's a track for everyone on this disc to relate to! Get in there and buy it! You won't regret it!

- Classic Album

History will show that Continuum is one of the classic Rock / Blues albums of all times.

- Unbelievable

The pure musicianship of John Mayer is unbelievable. This man is a true guitarists with one hell of a voice that can be used in all varieties of styles. The slower jazz feel to this album was obviously of no challenge to John as he has exceeded and excelled any expecations i had of the album. Terrific.

- The Continnuum of Mayer's Success

John Mayer's songwriting is something that is admired by so many, and envied by more. The way he flawlessly blends his perfectly executed music to sound like the profound lyrics he writes, draws people in like a moth to the flame. The reason he is so successful today is the same reason people used to gravitate to his dormroom in Berklee and just sit and listen. As an artist and a person he has learned so quickly and as a result has produced some of the best music of our time. Continuum is a testament to that; steadying his grip on his newfound role as a prolific blues guitarist. John has come a long way from the days of Villanova Junction and Eddie's Attic. Continuum: Easily John Mayer's best work yet.

- Floating music!

This Album is one of the greatest albums in the itunes store! John Mayer is a music Ledgend. BUY this album if your a Mayer fan like me!

- John at it again!

John Mayer just proves again and again why he is one of the most gifted musicians/songwriters going around. This album is probably more "bluesey" than his other stuff but for those who have heard his recent live stuff, it's perfectly done. Can't wait for him to Come to Sydney in November. A MUST HAVE ALBUM! Cheers. Todd, Sydney Australia.

- Soundtrack to our Soul

Another amazing album from John, and great mix of blues, pop, rythem and blues, and country. He's amazing songwrirting is very underrated. Can't wait for his tour downunder it going to be amazing

- Better than expected

I'm a John Mayer fan but not a huge John Mayer fan and was interested in the new CD but not overly excited. Well, it's brilliant! He's clearly matured as a both a guitarist and vocalist and the CD has so much more soul. Love it, love it, love it!

- A Brilliant Artist

its great to see an artist who started off with an independent album, breakthrough in australia. this album is truly the best, you can't pick a favourite song because they are all equally as good as the next! He has shown off his true ability to compose music and has improved so much as an artist compared to back in the days with any given thursday and inside wants out! even though they are still loved!!

- John is Da BOMB!!

This album is amazing!! My fave songs are Gravity and Waitng on the World to Change. He has such a beautiful voice. Well done John Mayer, ILY!

- Brilliant As Usual!!!!!

John Mayer is one of the most truly talented musicians of today...this album is a must buy, it showcases his brilliant songwriting skills and musicianship, a very "bluesy" feel to the album and its great.....i love the fact he opens up new styles of music to his fans (i know he has for me)...i believe his music just keeps getting better and better all the time...probably my favourite album of his so far!!!!

- Similarr}?

Is It Just Me But Not Only Does John Look Like The Gawjuz Teddy Geiger But He Also Sounds Like Him??? It's A Miracle! HOT TWINS!

- AMAZING

This is an awesome album. SO GREAT.

- Waiting on the world to change

Excellent song john mayer has an awesum voice and i reccommend it to anyone in the mood for a slow song

- Continuum - for new JM fans

I, unlike the vast majority of reviewers, haven't been a JM fan for years, I haven't seen him live (yet!) and I don't know what compelled me, in the space of a month, to buy his previous studio albums. So for those who have yet to be succumbed by this master of songwriting, this review is for you. Continuum is the perfect album for those new to the genius that is John Mayer .... it is for those who enjoy listening to music on those lazy Sunday afternoons while reading the paper .... it is for those who enjoy holding intimate dinner parties for their friends and it is for those who enjoy taking long soaks in the bath with a bottle of their favourite tipple. Once you've been hooked by this masterfully written, soulful, thought provoking and down right brilliant album go and discover how it all began!

- Beautifully deep lyrics, deeply touching music!

This whole album is exceptionally good, I have not seen someone produce a whole album of this quality. His lyrics are so deep and well thought out, definitely a good buy! Every single song is amazing and many of you have heard the hits. Check this album out!

- Pure Music

Mayer's music is seamless, simple and pure. The album you have to have.

- Evolution of the John Mayer sound

I've been anticipating this album for a long time. In this album, John exemplifies the care he has for his music, and also the respect he has for his old and new listeners. He is really comfortable in bluesy numbers such as 'Waiting On the World to Change', 'Gravity' and the final track 'I'm gonna find another you'. For a while, it seemed like something he was afraid would alienate his core audience, but it doesn't. His voice give familiarity, and this gives it accessibility to a mainstream audience I feel. He is also true to the acoustic sounds of 'Room for squares' and pushes emotional boundaries of expression, especially in 'Stop This Train'. The fuller rock strat sounds in heavier things are evident throughout the album. I really felt that John is consolidating within himself the 'musical source' of what makes his music so listenable, but being completely free in how that source is musically expressed. For instance, in Dreaming with a broken heart, he starts with an almost childish piano riff (he is a guitarist first) but still managed to turn it into a John Mayer expression. Musically, the album is almost flawless. He mentions having learnt to "care about everything in the music' or something to that effect, and this album shows it. It is love for music first and foremost. And inherently, by staying to to himself and treating his music as sacred, he brings his audience something truly special.

- love, love, love this

john mayer can do no wrong- i've loved all his tracks of his past albums- his lyrics are deep and thought provoking which is such a nice change to the mindless garbage out there. Wonderful to see that another artist has refused to sell out to make a quick buck and put out anything for the masses. can't wait until he's out this way again in oz.

- Hands off the skip button

Like others have said this is a progression of John Mayer's sound. He's laid back, funky (for a white guy), and gentle: his first two albums were both much more urgent sounding than this. Best of all, there's no duds; I can play the whole thing through without cringing at all. It's not a revolution in sound, but it IS polished, cohesive and enjoyable listening.

- John has done it again!

Now, if you ever wanted to see a rising star then John Mayer is your guy. If you have not heard John Mayer, then get all of his albums, sit back and enjoy. If you have his other albums, then add this one to your collection. The Heart of Life and Vultures are 2 great songs! as well as the new single "Waiting On The World To Change"... John Mayer... you are spot on!

- the best album ever hands down

this album truly is a masterpiece still to this day

- UNREAL!!!!!!!!! BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!!!!!!

This is Mayer's Best Album Yet!!!! It has the Melow Sound of 'Room for Squares' and the Boldness of 'Try'...But this album is more Grown Up...If you're already a fan of Mayer's you'll notice that his heart has gone into these songs...Its Real Music...it explores the sweet melodic sounds of the Guitar with a mixed 'Raw Blues' feel..So sit back and relax because YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!! I Gaurantee there's no other Album you'll enjoy this much!!! :)

- can't explain with words. too perfect!

John Mayer is one of the BEST writers/singers out there!! He is SOOO talented, and all his songs are soo good and inspirational! 'The Heart of Life' is one of my favourite soongs, and so is Daughters. Every song John writes is brilliant, he has a great relaxing and electric voice, where would the world be without him?? He is sooo great, and your money would not be wasted when you buy this album, or any of his others!! FIVE STARS FOR SURE!

- Perfection

I was sceptical at first but I hadn’t needed to worry as the more I listened to the album the more I love it , this is my first John Mayer album but certainly won’t be the last. Absolute perfection at its finest!

- I thought no one made Classics any more?

‘Continuum’, John Mayer’s 3rd studio album heads in a direction of blues, rock and soul. Putting it at a slightly different sound to previous efforts, though no less quality. The album leads of with the 1st single ‘Waiting On The World To Change’ which is a strong start, however by the time you get to ‘Vultures’ the album really gets into its stride and EVERY song opens up into a classic. Highlights include ‘In Repair’, ‘Stop This Train’, ‘Dreaming With A Broken Heart’, and the Al Green/Otis Redding influenced ‘I’m Going To Find Another You’. Many people won’t have heard of Mayer’s music but I think it’s time they sat up and listened, as it is beautifully crafted and the songs never shy away from bigger issues. Writing about “life” is no easy task in 4 minutes. Constantly challenging himself Mayer delivers an instant classic, one in which has a soul and a space in everyone’s collection.

- It is finished.

Ever been searching for that perfect album - the one which leaves you with 0% buyer's remorse? Do not despair, your quest is finally over. I honestly cannot emphasise enough how incredible this album is due to linguistic limits. In this new album, 'Continuum', Mayer returns to his Blues roots. I loved his more mainstream-orientated albums: 'Room for Squares' and 'Heavier Things', but when listening to them I sensed a repressed desire in John's voice to truly sing out his soul. But fortunately now, that wish has finally been fulfilled. His voice is, as always, beautiful and passionate, his music harmonic and artistic; his lyrics profoundly relevant and thought-provoking in a world encompassed by fear (just listen to 'Wating on the World to Change' and 'Belief' to hear what I mean). I'll stop here because John can sell himself better through his music than any critic can otherwise. Cliché though this review may seem, this time it's for real...

- 2018

2018 and it is still an incredible album

- England is missing out!

Buy this now, you won't regret it! Don't judge him based on the other albums itunes uk has, he's grown a lot since then. I'm over here from the states and I've been a John Mayer fan for years now. What's more is my Dad's a huge fan of John as well! He is the best songwriter of our time and the way he plays the guitar gives me chills! Get "Vultures," "In Repair," or "I'm Gonna Find Another You" if you want to test him out first. I'm so glad that you're finally getting his albums over here but you're still missing some good ones! Buy up what you can and perhaps you'll get the rest!

- the best album in years

john mayer first came to my attention only a few weeks ago when i wathced his performance on live at abbey road ,he played three songs from continuum and i was hooked , i now have all his albums all briliant but this album jumps into a whole new league ,awsome ,spellbinding the best album i have heard in years this man is a guitar genius with the soul of a poet ,top that with a great soul/rock voice you have the perfect package .all the tracks in my mind are 5 star but the stand outs are, vultures, belief ,gravity, stop this train, and what has to be one of the best hendrix covers i have ever heard bold as love, get this album if you want your soul to be lifted ,chears John

- Check the iPhone Keynote.

John Mayer performs "Gravity" and "Waiting On the World to Change" to end the Tuesday 9th January Keynote (viewable on the iPhone part of the Apple web site) and receives a great reception from the audience for his solo performance. For a live performance his vocals still remain strong - there is no form of miming here - and the part I love most is that he just appeared to be enjoying what he does best. You don't find that a lot in modern day music. The album is awesome, but view the end of the keynote if you're not sure. That won me over.

- Still my favourite JM album!

If you want to buy one John Mayer album, you've got to make it this one! My favourite tracks: Belief, Vultures, Stop This Train, Bold As Love (J.Hendrix cover), Waiting On The World To Change etc. John Mayer has moved "forward" continiously since. I personally prefer his guitar based albums more than the recent Pop oriented direction but that's just me. In any case, this album balances both worlds. Still a favourite among the fans.

- Timeless

I bought this album on the day of release back in 2006. A little over 10 years later, I'm still listening to it and I love it more than ever. Including songs such as 'Slow Dancing in a Burning Room', 'Stop This Train', 'Belief' and 'Gravity', it is a truly special album. This is a must have for any music fan.

- John Mayer

I visited my sister in Oregon USA back in 2001 and on one on my many trips to the music store found 'Room for Squares'. To this day it remains one of my favourite albums. This guy has such a melodic voice. Worth buying.

- Brilliant!

Great album. John Mayer just keeps getting better with each album, from his Room For Squares to Heavier Things and now this trio-based effort, with an eclectic mix of folk-rock, rock and blues. Its about time he broke through with UK audiences after all his success across the pond - maybe a concert tour next year would clinch it. Here's hoping he wins the the Album of the Year Grammy early next year. Get out there and buy the CD - you won't be disappointed. Radio DJs, get him on your play lists!

- Fantastic

This is without doubt one of the best albums i have heard in years. Musically it is brilliant. A must for any collection.

- c'mon britain! let john into your lives!

for all you brits out there who have either not heard of john mayer, or have just brushed him off, then you are really missing out! i'm a brit and i have loved john mayer ever since his debut 'room for squares' which may i say is one of my alltime favourite albums. this album is his 3rd studio album and it really doesnt dissapoint. it delivers everything you want from john, just pure genius! come on Britain! let him in, you'll never turn back. i swear.

- Love it

Great great album

- Let the man in ! !

Hi folks, Wow !, it's really hard to write a review for this album without being biased, You see i think that 'John mayer' is quite possibly the best song writer of this decade, and im gonna put myself out on a limb here and say that he rivals the like's of John lennon and Paul Mcartney, Infact i was listening to 'The heart of life' and fell into a Macca moment, but it was better you see, because this time im here to experience the real thing,Please if you want to buy one album this year buy this one ! You will not regret it. This record answers all your questions what ever they are and puts your mind at ease in the knowlege that we still havent finished writing music properly, I just wish John would come back to England and tour i think you hit it to early last time John, they didnt understand you, tell you what i'll make a deal with you, I'll buy all your tickets and be your support, you have turned my life arround and i thank you so much.... Best wishes John..Always listening....Mark Daniels

- they just keep on coming!

oh my god what another exeptional studio album from the man Mayer. Ever since hearing about him a few years back now, ive been obsessed with his music and this latest album exceeds expecations. 'Stop this train' has to be one of the nicest songs this year. The piano in 'dreaming with a broken heart' is a nice touch by mayer, who is prodominantly guitar, and sets for a lovely song. Yet again, his lyrics are exeptional and cleanly and thoughtfully written with a gift only John knows can reach. Buy this album and you will not be dissapointed!

- Smooth, Mature, Wonderful

It's been a year of disappointments from my favourite artists, especially Damien Rice's 2nd album 9. Well, John Mayer, I bow down to you. What an album! Track 1 "Waiting on the World to Change" is the obvious classic but the album just goes from strength to strength. Track 2 oozes with cool and then it's straight into my favourite, "Belief" - just so ryhthmical and so elegant. I leave the rest for you to enjoy. Thank you John.
