The Concerto Project Vol. III represents the third release in a series of four albums to be released by Orange Mountain Music documenting the eight Glass concertos. Volume III includes Glass’ “Concerto Grosso” Each movement of the "Concerto Grosso" is written for a distinctive group of instruments - the winds, brass and strings, which together make up a symphonic ensemble. It is performed by the Beethoven Orchester Bonn conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. The second concerto on the disc is Glass “Concerto for Saxophone Quartet.” The concerto performed by its commissioners, the internationally renowned Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. Glass conceived of the work as both a concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra but also to create a version sans orchestra which is heard on this recording.

The Saxophone Quartet Concerto is amazing! The only thing better is the outstanding performance by the Rascher Saxophone Quartet!
The Rascher Saxophone Quartet has performed this work numerous tours and the ensemble work shows - very tight group. Wonderful sound too. At $6.99 it not tough on the budget either.
While you get a lot of Glass for the price, it's not exactly the quality we expect. Concerto Grosso is a stern and strict Glass minimalist effort that is mistakenly performed like a chamber piece. The recording engineer seems to have even dulled out the nuances and artifacts usually accompanying a Glass orchestral recording that would allow the recording to flourish and elevate beyond the repetitious notes. The Rascher Saxophone Quartet once again expertly performs the concerto in the style and spirit of the original. While I thought having the non-accompanied version would be great for die-hard fan, I have come to regret the decision. After a few listens, the concerto minus orchestra is just, again, too dull and boring, too smooth and clean, too over-produced. I almost wish to hear some keys being slapped and saxophones bumping into knees. Heck, they should have recorded them on the streets of New York City to add some color. So why didn't someone bother to arrange the Beethoven Orchestra with the Quartet? A chamber group with a new-age one would have been fantastic. Ok music, dull recording. Go for the Symphony No. 2 that contains the quartet with the Vienna Radio Symphony.
These pieces are amazing! The Concerto Grosso starts off with a bang and ends with it, while the Saxophone Quartet Concerto sounds amaxing, in ways I never though you could play the saxophone! Truely wonderful pieces of music for any classical music lover.
