I tend to agree with a previous reviewer that good as James Gilchrist is the performance cannot compare with the quite wonderful, moving and expressive performance of Wilfred Brown with the English Chamber Orchestra under Christopher Finzi, the composer's son, on EMI Classics. The vibrato in Gilchrist's voice just not suit this piece it needs absolute clarity and simplicity to bring out the full beauty of Traherne's lovely words.
This is some of the most expressive English music ever written, sung by a master. James Gilchrist is one of the finest lyric tenors around. The so-called 'wobble' the previous review refers to is vibrato, not 'poor singing'.
This disc is totally ruined for me by the atrocious wobble that James Gilchrist has on every sustained note. How on earth was he chosen to make this disc? Such things matter to the listening public and however good the music we should not have to put up with such poor singing.
