He is really good! i bought one song, and now i want more! one word, outstanding!
The reviewer is not from New Orleans. He is from Michigan for God's sake. His review is biased and incorrect. Kermit is one of ours and knows how to blow that horn. He is not self centered or "trying" to be Louis Armstrong. In my humble opinion as a fan, this man is the best trumpet player since Louie Armstrong hands down. I wish that all could understand what street singing is all about! Having followed Kermit's career, all I can say is "Thank God for his music, it has lifted us from a horrendous time (Katrina) and he makes my sad heart sing.
The house critic shows an amazing ignorance of New Orleans! Mr Ruffins is a fixture here it's true, and a marvelous performer, but most of these songs are played by kids on brass in the street walking home after band practice. They're sung by every New Orleanians, we know all the words to "I Ate Up The Apple Tree". Self centered? No, it's about that treein Eden and going for it all! We do that here... Mr Kermit sings these songs better, LOL, but they're all of ours. And the Johnny Cash and Isley Brothers songs dissed here are performed by someone with a very different style, but are still very well done. It needs to be remembered that musicians will sing for personal reasons too, although these tunes reflect local events. Critics should understand that singers are a voice of a people, not a herdsman. That said- I never met a Kermit Ruffins tune I didn't like. The man has an amazing amount of joy to give, and even when he's more somber, like on "I Can See Clearly Now" he still infuses the song with the mourning every New Orleanian is still in. Mr Kermit sings about what he knows- New Orleans neighborhoods and small details of a way of life that makes us so different from other places, and he does it so well! And given what state the city is in, only partially rebuilt, vibrant neighborhoods gone, some songs percieved as poorly performed are just subjects people north of New Orleans don't know about or want to hear about. It's an excellent album; bring your own joy and sorrow and you'll feel it all here. Mr Kermit is amazing.
This man is a treasure.
