Richter was always the poet, never letting his phenomenal technique take over. I've known these pieces for years and whenever I hear the Richter version, I think: "Yes, this is the way it should be." HIs way with Rachmaninoff was sublime, even surpassing Rachmaninoff himself. That may sound like sacrilege, but Rachmaninoff made everything sound easy. Nothing ever seemed like a challenge to him. Richter plumbs the depths of sadness and soars to the heights of joy that inhabits these remarkable works. You will never hear better. It is a tragedy of great magnitude that he never recorded the Third Concerto. That would have bene one for the ages. He was quoted saying he didn't feel he could add anything that hadn't already been achieved by others!

I've looked around iTunes for a while trying to find a good performance of some Rach preludes, and while Ashkenazy's were good, these are just great! A complete set would be nice though :P
