To be fair to iTunes, this came out before the "Phases" retrospective was released by Nonesuch (only $30 for a lot of what's on here), but this is a stunning collection. If one is not prepared to take the plunge here, it's certainly worth assembling this complete recording from scratch.
Your going to have to select what you love...music for 18 musicians..piano phase ..six marimbas..music for mallet...you will never get tired. There is always something new to discover when you listen to his music. He is original and what's more he is not a sell out. He is a true and committed musician. (can't you see him living in soho when it wasn't exploited and made shishi)
Does anyone know where i could buy this recording of six marimbas.. because it sounds awesome and the only other one's i can find aren't up to temp and don't sound as good...
its cheaper to buy each song individually because there are only 70 some songs there are just a few you only can get with the album but those can be found individually... save your money but i do love me some steve reich
Yeah, this is expensive, but it is so good! I recently discovered Reich, and I really enjoy him. Piano Phases is ingenious! Even my family, who think that Philip Glass is the "devil," enjoys the concept of that piece! It's tons of fun to listen to, and I strongly recommend this album for those who can afford it, and have the patience to listen to his music. All the quality of sound in his pieces is spot on, and my favorite of them all is Music for 18 Musicians. I can't tell you how much I love the instruments phasing in and out. It's like you're in a room, and the walls keep changing around you. It's so cool!

One of the founders of minimalism, Steve Reich has been active since 1965 when his first tape=loop experiments were released. Since then he has written some of the formative pieces of the genre like drumming, music for 18 musicians. Developing his oeuvre with pieces like sextet and the award winning different trains where voice returned again, larger pieces such as cave and city life. when this 10 disk set came out I desired it intensely but the entry price was too much. Now that whole 10 disk career spanning selection is available at an unbelievable price - I couldn't believe my eyes at first. If you have even the merest interest in modern minimalist music this is a purchase you cannot pass by. I adore Phillip Glass as well, but to me Reich has more variety and development. But let your ears decide
