Synth-happy Erasure is back with their 15th+ CD and it does not disappoint. 30 years into their music making career, Erasure continues to thrive in their niche-turned-mainstream social scene. Intelligent lyrics pondering the trials of relationships (never ditzy love songs) combined with catchy, up tempo themes dominate The Violet Flame, a creation that is as youthful and energetic as anything this non-stop British duo has ever produced.
I did like this album by Erasure when I first heard it. One of the reasons I only gave this album four stars because, I still don't think this is as good as their old stuff. This is album has some dance songs, I didn't think those tracks were that bad. Overall, I still think Erasure is making good music, even in 2014!
You bitter bitter reviewers!
All of their albums have begun to sound the same, not much innovation. Where when you hear the Pet Shop Boys the bring something new to every album.
Truly impressed by the new album and certainly can’t wait to see them live in Houston tomorrow night! While there are plenty of great songs on the album “Be the One” is my favorite. It’s a wonderful ballad that takes me back to their great tracks like “Rock Me Gently” and “Sono Luminus”. It’s so awesome that they are still going strong after all these years!
Erasure has found their groove again! Elevation = perfection! I'm really blown away!
If Chorus, I Say x3 and the self-titled album were a trilogy of sorts for that switch to an all analog sound, The Violet Flame is the long-awaited follow-up. Vince and his gear are in top form and Andy's vocals clearly come from the heart. The hooks are back, the production is fantastic and there's not a single song I'd skip. Under the Wave is my favorite song, while Be the One might be the most beautiful ballad they've ever recorded.
I Love all their songs since the begining of time..... Me and my daughter aré going to go see them live tonight and cant wait to hear these new songs in person!!!
I love the art work on this recording and the new track Elevation is incredible.... no nonsense dance pop..... This is what I love most about Erasure.....
Let's put it this way, i am very hard to please when it comes to music, extremely demanding about music, i am a music grinch. But Erasure, oh Erasure gives me goose bumps.
One of the best is back with their personal best! I love all the tracks in the order they are presented and the grooves are just fantastic. ANDY BELL has had several releases this year but his collaboration with VINCE CLARK remains the best work he has done. I have them all I should know.
One of their best! You won't be disappointed! Promises is by far the best song on the cd!
Been listening to these guys since the beginning, so this is a must buy regardless. But after listening to the online stream about a dozen times, I gotta say this is their best stuff yet. Lead single "Elevation" is probably the weakest track, and even it is number one worthy. "Dead of Night" is a perfect opener, and later tracks give off a kind of Moroccan future vibe, and then plunge headlong into Giorgio Morodor territory. Seriously, if I've got any real complaint, its that ten songs isn't enough. Album of the year for me...
I’m a huge Erasure fan since the beginning, and they just keep getting better. I’m blown away by this album. I liked "Light at the end of the tunnel" a lot, and Tomorrow’s World I thought improved on that, but this one I think is the best they have produced since the late 80’s or early 90’s.(The Innocents, Wild!, Chorus) The Production, the hooks, the Lyrics all just speak to me in so many ways. You can tell Andy has taken great care of the voice, he just sounds great! Vince just keeps pumping out those great tunes. LOVE IT!!!
absolutely brilliant!!!!
I'll do my best to keep this short and sweet. Violet Flame is probably the best album in many years. It is haunting, passionate, real and contagious (synth is hot and carry's an awesome beat). Seeing them in concert and meeting them too confirmed for me Andy's voice is the best ever and flawless. I hope Sacred hits number ONE! Cheers!
Sacred...
While this is new and fresh it is also reminiscent of welcoming back a long lost friend! Fabulous songs, lyrics, synths, etc. Erasure is making what they want to and I love it! Grateful!
Elevation is another piece of pop genius from V&A - love the intro totally gets me all euphoric before bursting into the main tune. The re-mixes are great too, can't wait for the album and concert tour - Oakland you're going to be popped out!!!
Looking for forward seeing in concert in October in San Antonio, TX USA!!!!!!!! Whoohoo!
Oh dear lord… As much as I love old erasure they have gotten so stale. When is enough is enough, I mean the song Stayed A little Late Tonight is a perfect example… lets just break out the Lawrence Welk outfits and bubbles… this is BAD MUSIC I’m sorry I know this won’t be a popular post but facts are facts.. there is a reason there are only 47 posts here…making mine 48. What happened to such good artists...
It's brilliantly and completely everything you've hoped an Erasure album could be. From start to finish. I don't even want to say, "It's their best album since..." because there've been good songs on all of their albums. According to interviews, though, their approach was different on The Violet Flame. Vince laid down the melodies and Andy constructed lyrics around them, rather than the other way around. It worked. The lyrics are perfect, Andy sounds great, and Vince's synth genius runs wild. I hope they stick to that strategy. Favorite tracks: Under The Wave, Reason, Be The One... but they're all better than good. It's a masterpiece.
Saw them at Comerica Theater in Phoenix too!
I used to love ERASURE in the 80s. Their music was fresh, energetic electronic pop. Catchey through and through. Then, as time went on their good songs and albums began to wane and they became boring. I stopped following them since they seemed to be releasing mostly slower, melancholic songs that all sounded the same. Finally, after 30 years, they hire Richard X to produce and, to my elation, they sound exactly like they did in the 80s. Great job Mr. Bell and Mr. Clarke. This is the ERASURE I missed so much from the 80s. Welcome back!
It's "The Violet Flame", not "The Violent Flame", as your review states.
…and they’re still putting out brilliant things like this. How the heck they continue to think up these gorgeous handful-of-notes choruses with goosebump-worthy synths is beyond me. Kudos, Vince & Andy….shaking my head in admiration and thankful disbelief….
My brother loved you guys. I inherited the box sets and if he were still here he would your new album. He passed away in 2011 from esophageal cancer at 40. He and I went to your concert in NYC and absolutely loved it. Thanks you for being one of his favorite groups. Lovingly his sister Carol
So glad they are back on tour! We have all the albums and this one is shaping up to be #1. Can’t wait to see them next month in Chicago. We are making it a family affair, and giving the guys another generation of fans! I hope Andy and Vince keep going for years to come!
An album with a lot of texture and good production. The best keeps getting better. Bravo!
One of their best in years...a great great electro-pop music album
Erasure - The Violet Flame – New Album 2014 Is it 1984 or 2014? Close your eyes and listen. Can you imagine a two-person “Alternative 80’s Rock,” or “New Wave,” or “Dance Music”band making it successfully back on to the pop charts consistently after almost 30 years? Well, give Erasure’s new “The Violet Flame” a listen and see what is going on in the new/old world of music. Erasure remains soulfully intense, relevant and appropriately cheesy at the same time. Erasure, now grouped as part of the Electronic (or EDM) music generation, ranks as one of 2014’s best-rated iTunes releases. Erasure, made up of legendary keyboardist Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure) and soulful singer Andy Bell manage to reinvent themselves with spectacular reviews and big sales with a new record (or is it an album or LP) or just plain download “The Violet Flame” released Sept. 22, 2014. Truth is, the sound of the new Erasure is intense, new, old and compelling. Professional and fan reviews of the new Erasure exceed a 4.5 overall rating from an audience that probably has limited memory of Depeche Mode or Yaz…. but that’s OK, Erasure can be “new” again. Many artists who made big records in the 80’s (e.g. Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood), inspired fans to go back and check out their early and entire catalog. Well, that can happen in the digital age even faster with countless Erasure classics an iTunes, Spotify or Pandora button away. Revolution, after all, is about returning to the greatness of the past… this time with a modern twist to make it better. If you don’t like keyboards or the 80’s, you can skip “The Violet Flame”… this is not The Black Keys nor is it Mumford & Sons (both great modern music), but totally different. Erasure’s newest release is like adding a new ingredient to an old-fashioned pizza, it is familiar, yet freshly new. As for the individual songs, the 10 set download was introduced to us by the single ”Elevation,” which is classic familiar fun. But the real highlights here are the deeply intense “Dead of Night, or “Paradise,” which you just know are breaking bass speakers all over the Miami clubs at 3AM. The modern sounding “Reason,” makes you feel like you are sitting at a resort pool checking the water temperature every 10 minutes or so. Other highlights include “Promises,” “Be the One,” “Sacred,” “Under the Wave,” and the quirky “Stayed a Little Late Tonight.” Impressively, Erasure’s latest has no duds, which you cannot say about their music releases over the past 15 years. That alone, makes you think they are back and asking you to shake you head to the beat and be happy. For old Erasure fans, “The Violet Flame is no “The Innocents,” which will forever be Erasure’s musical peak, but this is a fine addition to any iTunes catalog… upbeat, modern, retrospective and brilliantly crafted electronic music with a soulful heart. I’ll get the 1980s Pepperoni and Sausage pizza… but add a little spinach and feta cheese. Erasure proves that you can still be a bit cheesy, but cheese is healthy if it makes you feel good. Bravo Vince and Andy.
Great Album! :-)
Saw their show in Reading, PA 21 Sept. just before the release of this LP but was fortunate enough to hear the entire album mix on SoundCloud, the couple weeks prior to the show. Love it and recommend it for any ERASURE fan.
Wow... I've been waiting for Erasure's new album for a long time. Its pure music with a club beat... I can really turn this up in the car. What nice wonderful melody! Long Live Erasure!!
Pains me to say. This is their worst album. Having said that, theirs still 3 great songs. The rest of the album is too clubby for me. Please please erasure make a throwback album. I wanna hear your old sound ala wonderland, the innocence.the song be the one, is still awesome though.
Finally...another great Erasure album from start to finish. Lush synths and a fresh set of catchy melodies from Vince and Andy's voice still sounds amazing after all these years. Nightbird (2005) was the last great complete album in my opinion. The ones since each had a couple good songs here and there but filled with others that were rather forgettable and frankly disappointing. What a nice and refreshing surprise to hear a glorious album like this. Really enjoyable listen from start to finish. Great job gents...this is another classic album to add to your legacy.
I have been a loyal Erasure fan since I was 15 years old. I own every studio album that they have released. I am currently 45 years old and have fallen totally in love with this new album, just like I did when I was 15. Sends shivers up and down my spine, I most definitely recommend it!!!
I might be biased as I’m a fan from back in the day, but I believe this is their strongest front to back since Nightbird and is in their top 5 already after only a few listens. Every track is a standout depending upon your preferred mode of Erasure, my faves are easily Under The Wave, Be The One, Sacred and Paradise but there’s no going wrong. Amazing job gentlemen. Thank You!
It's really awesome that Erasure has been making music for 30 years. Many 80's synth duo bands are defunct. And all their albums including Andy's solo effort "Non-Stop" are filled with really good music. I've got to say this though, as a fan since their inception and "Wonderland", they will never top what I feel is their best album ever...."I Say, I Say, I Say". It's a masterpiece that will never be bumped from the top.
Why stick with it Erasure? You need to progress if you want those of us who bought your albums years ago and have not for sometime. It is the same sound. Sure, some of still want to adore you but we also want you to grow.
So good to hear the Boys Still Making Brilliant music! Andy you sound better than ever! , Sexy, Dark, Catchy songs, Seductive as usual and unforgettable! ! This is when a consumer wants to BUY THE WHOLE ALBUM!….
The Violet Flame is Erasure. Through and through. The criticisms center around the album sounding like Erasure. Well, they are what they are. The album is a true return to form, and I LOVE IT!
