J Dilla - Don't Cry

Don't Cry by J Dilla Song Info

In a 2012 XXL interview, Questlove, a close friend and collaborator of Dilla’s, said “Don’t Cry” was a message to his mother. Possible message from Dilla: After he has passed, don’t mourn his death. Celebrate his contributions to Detroit, hip-hop, music, and the world. This album especially – Jay Dee’s final masterpiece (he was probably aware it was so as he was making it). Rest in peace James Dewitt Yancey. Samples “I Can’t Stand (To See You Cry)” by The Escorts.

Best Album Ever Period

- Chelsea Hayman

This album is quite possibly the best hip-hop album of the past decade. I say this not because Dilla has passed, but because Dilla has made this amazing work of art while he was struggling with a disease that killed him. You can feel this man's heart in the beats, it's almost like reading a story of his life. If anyone doubts what I am saying, I suggest that you take a listen for yourself. Dilla was the best beat producer in hip-hop and his legacy will live on through his music. R.I.P. Dilla.

- The best of the best.

"Your favorite producer's favorite producer." J Dilla is the best to ever touch a turntable. He does more than create some of the best hiphop around, he creates some of the most interesting musical compositions I've heard...and I listen to EVERYTHING. While "The Shining" is my personal favorite record of his..."Donuts" cannot go unheard. My personal highlight tracks are "Stop", "Time: The Donut of the Heart", and "Bye". Buy this!

- This will shake souls for years and years to come.

There are no words capable of explaining Jay Dee's beauty as a person and as a producer as well. This album explains him so vividly, you can see a part of him in every song. RIP Jay Dilla. We will never forget you.

- R.I.P.

a true legend, every thing he made is gold.

- What music is

J Dilla left us with this masterpiece. Working till the day he died, Dilla created this final strive to show the world the potential (and essence) of hip-hop and soul. Donuts shows people what Dilla was all about. His work is nothing but priceless. I take comfort in knowing the fact that Ma' Dukes is fingering through a basement full of unreleased Dilla work to keep true hip-hop alive. Rest easy.

- can't get my groove goin

I love the groove, but the DJ just doesn't let the groove settle in and work. Each song is under 2 minutes. You can't even think of it like one song, the grooves are too different. I wish he would just let it play... in the end, it makes me feel like he doesn't care about the listener and just wants to show off.

- Donuts

This album was created by a true artist. My first thought about Donuts was "this is interesting..." But then I really listened, with my mind and heart. A story is told through this album. I have become emotionally invested in Donuts, just as I become invested in works of art that speak from the soul of the maker. J Dilla pours out his story, his experiences, which can be appreciated by anyone who feels and lives.

- Great album

I knew of J Dilla thanks to Adult Swim, how i wish i could have "Mash" as my ringtone!

- J Dilla

J Dilla changed my life

- Amazing.

I won't lie, it took me a while to be able to enjoy this, to be able to understand it. I listened to a few Dilla tracks, liked his stuff with Common, always respected his work as quality hip-hop, but could never really get into an instrumental album like this. But one night, I just had to buy this album. I don't know why, but now I just get it. This album is incredible, and he made it in his hospital bed? Crazy. I don't think a casual hip-hop fan could truly enjoy and respect this work, but to dudes like me who love hip-hop and listen to so much of it, this is genius.

- has anyone heard...

the song "Mash" is on adult swim when they are talkin about the ratings or when they show peoples emails. Anyways i just thought i should put that out there...great music btw. r.i.p J Dilla

- how ironic is it

that this album still has a 4 and a half stars and the first reviews were dumb idiots who tanked dilla with their reviews. this album is so damn innovative that God himself called dilla home to get 3000mpc lessons.

- rip dilla

best ever

- R.I.P. J. Dilla

Probably one of the Best Dilla albums

- Classic

Classic Dilla beat's if you dont know him look him up end of story the Greatest of al Time R.I.P.

- A Classic

RIP J dilla a very souful album with classic material

- Perfection

Simply perfect ... I believe this album truly represented his vision for this piece of work. Hip-hop music is often times not taken seriously as an art-form (often times it shouldn't be taken seriously) but this album should silence any critic and represents the best that hip-hop can ever be! Bought it when it came out in 2006 and it has been close at hand ever since. Great work. RIP Dilla!!

- RIP j dilla

ive been a fan of cakeboys dilla and pete rock for a minute. i feel that no one in the game could compare to dilla, he was doing it right. he literally made music because he had to and to me theres no greater love. he did this whole album on his deathbed. for all of you who dont know dilla died from lupus health complications on feb 20th 2006. he will live forever in our hearts.i think that anybody who really takes the time to loop this album can truely appreciate j dilla as an author of music. ~rip~

- The Most Influential Underground Hip Hop CD Ever

J. Dilla is a man who should need no introduction, often being referred to as, "your favorite producers favorite producer," J. brings some of the most raw samples alive in this compilation. From listing the Outro first, to the Intro last, this CD is full of amazing samples and production work, and is easily a must listen for any fan of Hip Hop and Soul. Another note, some of these songs appear on Adult Swims Bumps between shows, most notably Workinonit, Waves, Mash and the Intro. Again, this is a must listen for anyone, especially those who listen to Madlib, MF DOOM, J. Rocc and any of the other artists of Stones Throw Records.

- The G.O.A.T.

If you don't love this album that dilla made on his death bed you're are stupid. This guy is the best evr and no one comes close to this guy. Dilla, R.I.P.

- Untouched

the skill and emotion that dilla puts into this album is breathtaking. Smoke an L, and chill to this album, it will change your life!!!

- the most emotional album ever

another amazing amazing amazing friggen album by dilla, every track delivers an incredible amount of emotion by dilla. RIP to the greatest man ever to make a beat. true legend.

- J-Dilla Made Music Like Fresh Produce for the Market

RIP J-Dilla. I never heard of this guy until last year; I can't believe I was steeped in such ignorance. His music and the influence on hip-hop production will forever be felt in the musical realm for a long time. Simply put, look at his music like this allegory: listening to today's pop-style/electronic/computerized hip-hop beats is like eating a McGriddle Cake from McDonald's. It tastes good upon first bite, but overall its not good for you. Dilla's type of production and creativity, using old samples, wonderful instrumentation, and fiercesome beats, is like going to grandma's house and having a homecooked breakfast where all the ingredients are fresh and succulent. It goes down easy and the aftertaste is wonderful. I think today's generation is suffering from too many McDonald's-ized beats and not appreciating pioneers like Mr. Dilla who combined awesome hip-hop forms with organic music. Have some Donuts for breakfast.

- Great Album for Lovers/Learners of Hip Hop

Prior to this album I was familiar J Dilla's work with some of my favorite artists, (Talib Kweli, Common, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots) but I never knew how great of an impact he had on the hip hop world. After hearing the amazingly infectious beats on Talib Kweli and Q-Tip's "Lightworks", Ghostface's "Whip Me with a Strap"(One for Ghost), Commons "So Far to Go"(Bye), and The Roots "Can't Stop This"(Time: The Donut of the Heart) I was craving more. More so, I was curious if I could get just the beats. To my surprise, J Dilla's last masterpiece is just beats. His selection of samples and abiltity to mix them seamlessly makes not only a must have cd for any lover of hip hop, but also an experience that revitalizes the spirit of hip hop. Stand out tracks for me are Lightworks, Gobstopper, and One Eleven. It's a unbeatable selection of tracks for just $10.

- Goes without saying

listening to this album is like looking at Michaelangelo's sistine chapel; The Genius artist completing his masterpiece. From beginning to end, this album is Excellent.

- R.I.P.

J Dilla was a genius and one of the most influential beatmakers in hip hop. His name was Dilla Dawg and I can only rep the RAW.....J Dilla will be missed but through his music he can live forever...

- Hands down best instrumental album ever made!

I could go on and on with praise for this album but i will sum it up nicely. I have never heard a CD with so much heart and power. Dilla really put it all into this. He passed three days after its release and much of it was done in the hospital. Donuts was a "pain killer" for J Dilla and it could be for anyone. Just sink in and enjoy. I love it and i get goosebumps and teary eyes every listen. No one and no album has influenced me as much as Dilla "Dounts." R.I.P J Dilla AKA Jay Dee Rest In Beats

- An Addictive, Instant Classic!!! I Luv this album. R.I.P. Jay Dee

I truly love this album. This is a great album. I'm actually addicted to it. I find myself listening to it over and over again after trying to make myself listen to other music. J Dilla is one of the best and most creative, significant Hip-Hop producers, hands down!!, to ever do it. God Bless you, Jay Dee. R.I.P.

- Do You Know J Dilla?

If not, you know his work. All I can say is, I've been listening to him for years, not knowing who was behind some of my favorite beats in all of hip hop--and I go back to the near beginning in New York. Back before MTV, before mainstream radio. When hip hop was Red Alert and you had to get your tapes ready. When my cousins in the South used to dub my tapes 'cause they couldn't listen to what was happening in the Northeast. There are many good producers in the world who take a blank slate and mix, weave and construct beats. However, nobody get's to me on the same level. His music is high quality and timeless--he's the genuine article. He's got some recurring themes in his work, but now I know why he was spoken of so highly after his passing. What a talent. Buy his music!

- That one dude who says this makes him vomit...whats his problem?

First of all that one guy needs to shut up and write something constructive. Second of all dilla was on his death bed when he finished this album. Maybe it could be finished a little more, but its still a masterpiece when you consider what it brings to the table, and how much potential it has for use by other artists. Dillagence isn't an amazing example of that but its not bad. Plus, have you ever just chilled out to it. Try it. Rest in beats dilla

- Dilla

One of the greatest Hip Hop producers ever. RIP.

- Fantastic

While I can appreciate that some may not "get it" as it's not a beat tape in the traditional sense, how some can give this a one star rating is beyond me. The innovation and occasional cheek of this album earns it 3 stars even if you don't put it in heavy rotation on your iPod. The blend of jeep beats, 70's soul, and sometimes spacey experimentalism is refreshing in a genre that, let's face it, has is share of repetitiveness. In a dry, barren landscape of Lil Wayne and other negligible hip-hop acts, J-Dilla is a cool glass of H2O with lots of ice. He brings it back to what I used to love about hip-hop - then he takes it a little further. Oh, and this isn't borne out of sentimentality. I realize this album was destined to get good reviews for the mere fact he worked on it from his hospital bed. Like a lot of posthumous releases in the arts, the frenzy to wax poetic about the artist was ineveitable. But this album stands on it's own without the nostalgia or sentimentality.

- Best album of all time

When i first heard this album and i heard j dilla died it brought tears to my eyes. It was too good to be true. The beats are so good and so much different then any other rap album. The beats had a jazzy operaish feel to it which made me hooked. They are so had to hear after J Dilla died. Everyone needs to buy this album, J Dilla is a legend and shall never be forgotten. Peace.

- yummy donuts!

this is a pure classic. a must have for anyone who is a fan of good music. its comprised of solid arrangements, courageous melodies, raw yet polished beats. this album is a pure banger. do yourself a favor and drastically improve your music collection by adding dilla's masterpiece, donuts, to your collection R.I.P - J Dilla

- laced beats

there are messages in these beats, dont sleeeep on it. wakeup & listen. they dont call him "your favorite producers, favorite producer" for nothin'. R.i.P JayDee

- the godfather

this album can bring me to tears. nothing has ever, or will ever, sound like this. a creative genuis in the realm of miles davis and charlie parker. people jock him everyday as he is the producers producer. this album is just simply amazing.

- we love you

Your excellent work will live on in our hearts man ... REST IN PEACE

- pick it up again if you haven't listened...

i bought this joint over a year ago, and i just could *not* get into it. since that time i kept hearing pieces of it in various places....finally a few days ago i went ahead and started listening again. this is simply a GORGEOUS album, from back to front. especially *because* of the brevity of the tracks. the denseness of the samples is something hardly achieved today (and any artist less than dilla's stature probably wouldn't have been able to pull it off given the clearances necessary). this is that post-messin with madlib/hard like fantastic sound...sometimes tough to dig into (i.e. the difficult "Do Factory") but with ultra bangers like Lightworks (he chopped the *mess* out of it and did it well), The Twister, Anti-American Graffiti, Geek Down, and soulfulness on stuff like the intro, airworks, and pure funk, "The Diff'rence" (which has to be a TV commercial sample!) and "Light My Fire"....so many tasty morsels on this joint. i'm glad i dug it back up and gave it a go. a wonderful swan song from someone clearly blessed with a talent. j.

- double d

made on a stripped down set-up in his hospital bed. released on his birthday, three days before his death. i love the dionne warwick sample on "stop", and the eddie kendricks sample from "people". he leaves these samples raw with little manipulation, but i just think the way he ties the whole album together, with the short tracks and tight mixing. he creates an environment you can really get lost in, with soul hits and verb as well as his deft play with bpm. truly a great album! incredible especially considering his fatal bout with lupus, you can't help but think that he knew this would be his last album. he turned it into a masterpiece with incredible emotional depth. peace, r.i.p. dilla has been an inspiration to many.

- Bump-tastic

discovered J Dilla from the Adult Swim bumps I love so much - his tracks are great. Definitely try out Welcome to the Show, and Two can Win. (They also use Mash, but I'm not a total fan.)

- The best instrumental album ever

The expiremental sounds of this LP is definetly different from other hip-hop, because the constraints of lyricism isn't there. Dilla's final statement was also his greatest, as he put a unique spin on producing that will never be seen again in the genre- no, the lifestyle- of hip-hop.

- Addicted

I can't stop listening to this album--every night when I get home from work I put it on. Seems too strange for words at first and then you start to hear the genius of it. Unique, original. I wish I'd discovered J Dilla when he was still alive.

- Arrggh

I love J Dilla man but I can't freaking get it because I don't have no money. I honestly listen to the 15 second preview because I want the damn album. This guys music is incredibly magnificent. R.I.P J Dilla :)

- R.I.P Dilla thanks for the amazing music

his death was a sad day for true hip hop... sad to see so little people know who he is tho...

- Dilla # 1

one of the greatest - nuff said

- R.I.P Jay Dee

Five Freakin Stars!! His music is like no other type of rap. Its not to hard and not too soft its just right. And the fact that he died from a disease and not by getting shot makes it ten times better.

- J Dilla Is The Savior Of Hip-Hop

Okay first off, if u gave this cd a bad review i bet you listen to all that mainstream hip hop garbage for example: 50 cent and others. This cd is flawless. I listened straight through. Some classics on here are "Waves", Gobstopper", "Two Can Win","Lightworks" and the rest are still great. Pick this up now!!!!!!

- Buy the wax...

Any single you can find from this man. Trust me on this. You'll find so many more gems than that are available for digital download. If you can find it, cop it. Rest in Beats dilla...

- J Dilla changed my life...

Where can I start? The void left by J Dilla will never, ever be filled. Never before could a producer provide innovative beats for a bunch of different artists in different genres like the late Jay Dee. Not to exaggerate, but I straight up will never feel the same about music again since I know that Dilla won't be layin' down any more beats. Donuts picks up where he left off, and you can't sleep on the fact that he was communicating with us because he knew he didn't have much time left-as proven by some of the track titles ("Bye," "Last Donut of the Night," "Don't Cry," U-Love," etc. Cop this album if you like real music, and don't cheat yourself out of his earlier work. Although this is still a dope project, he was literally on his death bed and didn't have all of his machines and tools at his disposal. Do some research and peep what he did for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Slum Village, Common, The Pharcyde, and Erykah Badu just to name a few. This cat was literally the best that ever did it... Dilla, I know you're watching down on us now. Just know that real music heads appreciated you more than you could ever know.
