Whitney Houston - How Will I Know

How Will I Know by Whitney Houston Song Info

"How Will I Know" peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart, U.S. Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart and U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks Chart in the Winter of 1986. "How Will I Know" is a song recorded by American recording artist Whitney Houston for her eponymous debut album, which was released in February 1985. The song was released by Arista Records in November that year, as the album's third single. Composed by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, the song was originally intended for Janet Jackson, but she passed on it. Houston then recorded the song with altered lyrics and production from Narada Michael Walden. The lyrics speak about the protagonist trying to discern if a boy she likes will ever like her back.

- A Timeless First Studio Album From A Legendary Voice

I am a fan. I've been a fan since I first heard those perfect pipes in 1985. I was fortunate to see Ms Houston 3 times in concert and while I would be the first to say her voice evolved over the years, it was always spectacular. Oh God...how I will miss that voice and the effortlessness with which she flew through complicated scales and hit pinnacle highs! Do yourself a favor and buy this timeless album. Enjoy returning to them again and again, especially when you want a lift in spirit! Ms Houston, as i'm sure you have heard from others, had that rare ability to send goosebumps up your spine and release those endorphins into your brain! After you have heard these classics, pick up her latest studio album "I Look To You" and begin to appreciate just how hard she worked her craft, so that you would always be inspired and moved. Whitney Houston was always true to herself. True to her music. And she was true with her fans...however you feel about that is unimportant, because in the end...her music was TRUTH.

- Whitney Houston

If I had not already known that this was Whitney Houston's debut, I would have never guessed. She sounds so experienced, yet she sounds very young and has a fresh vibe. There is a balanced mix of dance numbers, mid-tempos and ballads. Unlike several of her other albums, where there would be really only one or two stand out hit songs, here; there are quite a few hits and the filler tracks are more than just decent. This album really showcases Whitney in all her glory, and songs like Thinking About You, How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You and Someone for Me prove it.

- This is the Whitney I want to remember

This is Whitney's best album by far. I bought this album when it came out, and I wore that cassette out! I was a huge fan until the diva syndrome and Bobby Brown entered her life. She was a huge talent and a great beauty, but it makes me sad that she just threw it all away. I had a glimmer of hope for her newest album (I Look to You), but after listening to the sample of the title track, I'll be saving my money on that one, downloading this album, and enjoying the beauty of Whitney's voice before she just spoiled it all.

- Best Whitney Song!!!

I've been watching polls on her best song, and 'You give good love" was never mentioned. That's what made this album. This should be considered her best song! Oh Whitney, there was such magic and joy in your voice.

- "Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP...

...called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that Christie? It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album."

- Amazing singer

Whitney Houston the greatest singer in the world will miss her

- Greatest hits

Whitney was an ICON in a class by herself. She will be missed. This was superb.

- Songbird

Whitney at her best indeed. Actually, I think her duet with Jermaine Jackson is under-rated. It's a beautiful version of "Nobody Loves Me.."

- Not a good bye

Whitney H. Music will live on through my iPod and others. Other artist will sing through her legacy. Gone but not forgotten

- RIP Whitney. Thanks for the memories

This album is very special to me. I spent many days playing this repeatedly.

- Awsome!

Greatest Album That Was Every Made By Whitney Houston! Too bad she went on the drugs!!! She will never be the same great singer.

- Powerful, influential, best of its time!!!

It's hard to believe that a lot of the garbage that dominates the radio today, particularly the female pop vocalists, or "divas" if you will, such as the freaky ACTRESS Lady Gaga (yes, I said actress, not singer, not artist, freak-show ACTRESS), the untalented and not at all memorable Rihanna, the trashy Katy Perry, and the completely computer-dependent, digitalized, robot Ke$ha, belong to the same genre of music that was initially started by such a talented musical icon as Whitney Houston. It's downright disgusting if you think about it. Granted, not much can be said for Whitney's unwise and destructive behavior (the drugs, the abusive marriage, the idiotic politics, the shameful treatment of the previous leader of Israel, etc.), but there is no denying her incredible talent, which was highlightd in this album especially. Amidst the "poppy" anthems of the '80s by such artists as Duran Duran, Toni Basil, Rick Astley, and Co. (which I am not at all insulting... I love them all!), Whitney was a "breath of fresh air" with her smooth and relaxing R&B and her moving power-ballads. The calm and soothing "Saving All My Love For You" and "You Give Good Love" are perfect examples of this, and while I normally do not like such slow, low-key music as these, one can not help but love them. Though the album does not delve into upbeat pop to such an extreme as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" (I wish it would, though), "How Will I Know" captures Whitney's slightly less poppy edge. The best song on the album, though, is definitely the relaxing and meaning-rich "The Greatest Love Of All", which may even surpass her other power-ballads "I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing." With four number one singles on this chart-busting album, it is easily one of the best works of all time. Though Whitney went on to perform her legendary version of "The Star Spangled Banner" and win several Grammys, it is such a shame that things went downhill so fast after "The Bodyguard." So much potential... gone.

- Whitney at her best!

I still have the original album and this by far is Whitney's best work. Her voice is so pure, angelic, fresh and young. As for her personal life, because of BobbyBrown she has her greatest gift of all, Bobbi Christina Brown.

- The beginning of a legend

Simply put Whitney Houston is the best female vocalist of all time and this is the beginning of her amazing career. There are many divas that followed in her footsteps (Mariah, Celine, Beyonce, Christina, Leona, Alicia) but nobody can touch the golden pipes and match the power, range and amazing tone that Ms. Houston had in her prime. This album has many great classics, You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love for You, How Will I Know, All At Once and the Greatest Love of All. I think this is a must own album from the 80's and a must own for those that appreciate pure raw talent.

- lost angle

omg i cant believe the one person who inspired me to sing and have a voice to love me first is gone so soon i luv u whitney ur truely the queen of pop and will be missed i feel like i lost a family member its truely truely sad but im glad to have grown up to ur music and movies i still keep hoping its not true but it smdh the good ones always die young

- R.I.P

So sad. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.

- Love u always

Whitney Houston was a person. She was someone's daughter, mother, sister, friend. I think we should only say and think good things about her now. She can't hear the bad things that are being said and the only people that r hurting are the people left here to try and carry on her legacy. So come on people have a heart and let this beautiful soul RIP.

- YOUR BEST

RIP..THIS ALBUM IS WHY I LOVED YOU SO MUCH AS A SINGER. I LOVED YOU AS A PERSON TOO.

- Her best work!

I used to have this on cassette and listened to it all the time. Her voice is pure soul. I look forward to hearing her new release this year to see how it compares.

- Wonderful Memories

I can't believe how time flies. My mother introduced me to Whitney and this very album when I was 6 yrs old, ATF!!!!! If you dont appreciate and adore this music, there is something wrong with you. It's simply beautiful.

- Superstar!

Whitney Houston a star who shined so bright ............. She was awesome. I love her forever...RIP.

- Love, life.

A voice to remind us that life has a begining....., a purpose....and an end. You gave us good Love Whitney, may Live return to you in some way.

- If You Must …..

If your feel compelled by buy dead people music, then this is the best one. I find it strange that people flock to the stores/itunes to buy music from a star that has just died. No grievance or reflection period, let's just consume product with a dash of our pity and sorrows. The same thing happened to Michael Jackson and recently Etta James. It's too bad that the public can't enjoy their music when they were alive. The only people profiting now are the record execs and business managers. The music industry is dead so logically Dead Artists is where the money is!! ( just ask Eva Cassidy, Queen,Elvis, Tu Pac, B.I.G., Justin Timberlake (not really dead but his career certainly is!)…..even Mozart and Beethoven sold a few from the heavens ….the list is endless.

- Love it

An amazing first album...she's (still) amazing.

- Whitney

Absolutley the best album she ever had!!!

- Goodbye

To the greatest female vocalist who ever lived, the queen of pop, Whitney, We Love You. We will always remember you and cherish the soundtrack of our lives that you and the great Clive Davis provided. God bless your family.

Such great memories w this album. Every little girl wanted to be Whitney in the music video, 'How Will I Know'. Your music meant so much to so many.

- Falling for Whitney

I remember being in college when this album came out and every time I saw the video to "You give good love" I felt like was falling in love with Whitney. Now there's three of my all time favorite singers have passed away, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. You all are truely missed. R.I.P

This album was groundbreaking. I was in the 12th grade when it came out.
