Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston

About Whitney Houston by Whitney Houston Album

Whitney Houston is the debut studio album by American contemporary R&B and pop singer Whitney Houston. It was released on February 14, 1985, by Arista Records. The album initially had a slow commercial response, but began getting more popular in the summer of 1985. It eventually topped the Billboard 200 for 14 weeks in 1986, generating three number-one singles — "Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know" and "Greatest Love of All" (a cover of "The Greatest Love of All", originally recorded in 1977 by George Benson) — on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which made it both the first debut album and the first album by a solo female artist to produce three number-one singles. The album topped the albums charts in many countries, including Canada, Australia, Norway and Sweden, peaking at number 2 in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. The album was certified diamond for shipments of 10 million units or more on March 16, 1999, and later 13× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on July 29, 1999, making it one of the top 100 best-selling albums in the United States. It has sold over 22 million copies worldwide. In 1986, at the 28th Grammy Awards, Whitney Houston received four nominations; including Album of the Year and won one, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for "Saving All My Love For You". For the 29th Grammy Awards of 1987, the album received a Record of the Year nomination for "Greatest Love of All". In 2003, the album was ranked 254 on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 best albums of all time and this album appears at number 46 on the list of 200 definitive albums in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In honor of its 25th anniversary, the album was reissued as Whitney Houston – The Deluxe Anniversary Edition on January 26, 2010, an expanded edition with five bonus tracks including the a cappella version of "How Will I Know" and the original 12-inch remixes, a booklet tracking the history of the original album, along with a DVD of live performances and interviews by Whitney Houston and Clive Davis.

- My favorite album by Whitney Houston

She is my favorite singer and I love her so much. This album is the best album of the late 80s no the whole 80s

- Wrong Version Of "Greatest Love"

Very impressive debut for Whitney Houston. HOWEVER - this contains a different version of "Greatest Love Of All". The original version had an electric piano opening and can now be found on her Greatest Hits album. This version has an acoustic piano and different vocals and is not as good as the original.

- One of the greatest albums of all<3

Whitney Houston is truly at her best with her astounding debut. Every song is strong and showcases her beautiful, powerful voice. It is one of my favorite albums ever and I will always treasure it as a memory of Whitney in her absolute prime, in the days when she truly was a star. Here's how the ratings look for each song: 1. You Give Good Love - 9/10 - A mellow ballad to kick things off. Whitney's range is introduced for the first time in this heartfelt song. A very solid start. 2. Thinking About You - 9/10 - Upbeat and super fun to dance to. The tune is really catchy. A perfect blend of R&B and dance. If you don't like it right off the bat, it will definitely grow on you. 3. Someone For Me - 8/10 - Probably my least favorite song on the album, which is saying a lot because it's still amazing. Another dance song, and Whitney's voice, especially at the end, shows exactly everything that she can do with her voice. Similar to Thinking About You, the more you listen to it, the more you will like it. 4. Saving All My Love For You - 10/10 - It's clear why this showstopping ballad snagged Whitney a Grammy. One of her most famous songs, Ms. Houston puts her heart and soul into every emotion on this track. She easily transitions from the quieter, softer moments, to the louder, more powerful parts, and the accompanying saxophone adds even more soul to this song. Definitely a highlight of the album. 5. Nobody Loves Me Like You Do - 10/10 - The biggest mystery to me is why this song wasn't released as a single, or at least more popular. Whitney's duet with Jermaine Jackson is absolutely magical. Emotional, soulful, beautiful... I could go on and on. My second favorite song on the album after Greatest Love of All, and one of my favorite Whitney songs of all time. You will not forget this one. 6. How Will I Know - 10/10 - Back to the uptempo songs. Happy, bouncy, and one of the funnest tracks on the album. Not to mention the fact that the music video for this song broke barriers for black singers on MTV. A really great dance track. 7. All At Once - 8/10 - Not one of my favorites, but as always, Whitney's ever-present endless range turns this ballad into something memorable. Very heartfelt and a lot of feeling was put into every lyric. The structure of All At Once is little repetitive of some of the other songs on the album, however. 8. Take Good Care of My Heart - 10/10 - This song proves that Whitney and Jermaine are a winning combination. Another duet between the two of them, this time a little more upbeat. The melody is insanely catchy and beautiful, and the sax in the background makes this song even more perfect. With the blend of Whitney and Jermaine's gorgeous vocals, this is yet another horribly underrated track. 9. Greatest Love of All - 10/10 - Only Whitney's signature song I Will Always Love You can surpass this. Something about this ballad sets it apart from the rest of the tracks on the album. Whatever it is, when Whitney sings it, magic happens. Truly inspirational and classic 80's. 10. Hold Me - 9/10 - The closing ballad for the album is a duet with Teddy Pendergrass, and was actually released the year before under Teddy's name. Nevertheless, it is a memorable moment, and although Whitney was originally not intended to be the main feature of the track, listeners can't help but pay attention to the soothing quality of her voice during the verses and the powerful attack of her runs at the end. A great end to a great album. I highly recommend this album to anyone who is, like me, a fan of R&B or classic 80's and 90's pop. Of course, if you're just a Whitney fan, then this is a must-have for sure! This is where Whitney Houston's legendary career began, with this album, and the impact she had on so many people in the years to come with her songs and her voice. She is one of my greatest inspirations and had one of the best voices of all time. Do not hesitate to buy this album, because I guarantee you, it will be a classic that remains in your heart forever. RIP WHITNEY HOUSTON xoxo Mack<3

- One of the Few Perfect Albums

Whitney Houston's first album has to be considered one of the defining moments in music history. Every song on this album is good, not only because of Whitney's voice, but also the song writing, and the production on the album in general. She could sing ballads, up tempo dance music, as well as duets. This album truly intoduced her to the music world. You can hear the youth in her voice at the time, which brings back memories. One of the key things about Whitney in general is that she always sounded better than her records live. Not many singers during that time or today could do that. Many people were rushing to prove they could after Whitney came on the scene. There will never be another like her.

- Beautiful!!

Sad, real songs, that bring back so many memories.

- Because

Had to purchase Whitney’s Premier Record for my personal vinyl library. This Record is ESSENTIAL in any MELOMANIAC’S catalog. JUST BECAUSE…. Whitney ,..enough said. Mr.Buby Rdg, Pa.

- There'll Never Be Another

This first album is awesome!! Hit after hit, and even the songs in between are great. They are great because of "The Voice" that shines on each of them. Her voice is power and grace; strength and sensitivity; youthful and womanly...all of these things and so many intangibles that simply cannot be put into words. This album takes me back to my youth, to the 80's, to a time when Whitney would just sing on stage with her incredible voice and did not need one backup dancer, prop, or light show to help her performance. Her stage presence, vocal range and control, charisma and charm were enough to marvel at. I would encourage folks to watch some clips of her performing these songs online, in the early days, if you want to see what all the hype is about when it comes to Ms. Houston. She lived up to it. Even in the end, her last album is very inspirational and absolutely solid. (And she still had chops!!!) But, for those who have a negative thing to say about her I say this: she was great! She lived out her struggles in public and fought bravely to try and get her life on track. Her last album chronicles that fight. She was not perfect and neither are you. You just didn't have millions of people watching your struggles as you lived them. Whitney was a human being and a child of God. She is and always will be a great artist. I wish she would have won her battles but she is now at peace and will not be subject to the cruelty of people who poke fun and mock the VERY REAL struggles of others. God loves her and now she can rest. I am thankful for the gift that she shared with the world. I pray for her daughter and wish people would think twice before they write mean things about her. She was a person who had flaws just like YOU. Her talent is what she should be judged by, and that cannot be disputed.Whitney, you shined on this and all of your albums. We will never forget you. To those considering this album: Buy it. It's loaded with hits! Her voice is simply beautiful. I replay tracks over and again just to hear her riff, hold notes, and interpret the lyrics. She was that great!!This album is where it all started. You will not be disappointed. Thanks for reading my review.

- I can't believe I never saw her talent before😭

I am only fifteen so when I was able to understand what was going on all I heard of Whitney houston was that she was on drugs. I am soo upset that I was not able to see her true talent before her death. Her song "Greatest Love Of All" saves my life everyday. I have dealt with bullying and the message it sends every time I hear it reminds me that I must love myself and I'll be okay. God bless you Whitney!❤❤ you will always be in my heart and I will always love you

- Didnt we almost have it all

Didn't we almost have it all, Nobody loves me like you do, I love the lord!!!!! I will miss your beautiful voice. It was truly a gift from God. Thanks for sharing it with us. I will cherish your songs forever.

- The Debut of A Legend

Few people are gifted with such a Powerhouse Voice. It’s rare that a Artist has 4 songs from their debut Album hit number one on the charts...But Whitney did. With that powerful voice, beautifully written music that you could relate to and the face of an Angel...Whitney Houston became a Superstar over night. You just knew she would have a long successful career if she wanted one. It’s really heartbreaking that the roads she chose to travel ultimately led to a Legend leaving this world way before her time. I can only imagine what gifts she could have contributed to the world had she made different choices....I’m thankful she shared her beautiful voice with the world.

- Awesome!!!

- The best one

The best one

- Awesome

I'm only 16, and a guy. After hearing "How Will I Know," I instantly loved this album. Truly a classic.

- The Voice of ALL generations

I remember falling in love with this woman and her immense talent at a very young age. I am now 25 and a singer and everything I do vocally has been influenced by this woman. When it comes to singing, she is the template. She influenced every singer that came afterwards and the world watched as so many tried but NO ONE could match the voice of Whitney. Her tone, her clarity, her range, her POWER, her sweetness, her cadence, her embellishments. She was truly a master at the art of singing. She needed no gimmick, no circus, no choreography. She could stand in one place for an entire show and STILL captivate the masses. WHAT A GIFT! Truly the greatest female singer in history and I doubt the world will see another like her. I loved her and I see her legacy continuing in all of the people who were so heavily influenced by her boundless gift. I love you forever, Whitney Houston! Forever.

- God bless you miss houston

We will miss you

- The Greates Love Of All Not Originally Her's

A lttle known fact0 The Greatest Love of All was origianlly written and recorded by George Benson. But there are many other of her original hits that became Platimum records and Grammy Award winners. But there are two little noticed duets on this album- Take Good Care of My Heart with Jermaine Jackson and Hold Me with Teddy Prendergast . Both solidify her as an up and coming mega star.

- Rest In Peace Whitney

music that transcends trends

- I love her songs so i just new i was going to like this

I love it

- Superb album

Who sings better than this angel! Timeless music that will move mountains always

- Not the original but in some ways better

This is not the same iTunes listing I downloaded several years ago, as "complete my album" doesn't show up. That version was probably ripped from a (typical for the '80s) flat transfer CD. The old version sounded exactly like my LP minus the sibilance and clicks. This new Mastered-for-iTunes version is both disappointing yet somehow more pleasing. "How Will I Know" is a good example. No intro or buildup-- the beat just drops right off the bat with loud phasers and deep bass. It's exciting and fresh, yet not what I've been training my brain to for 33 years. The only consistent difference, overall, is smoother vocal roll-offs. Some instrumentals sound harsh, but they probably just stand out more with the less harsh vocals. The vocals are still bright as ever, but maybe the echo is of higher quality. Despite this version not being 100% true to the original release, I begrudgingly admit it is a more enjoyable experience overall.

- NO ONE COMPARES

Been a Big Fan since the early 90's. Every cd was the best. No one compares to you!! To bad half the world waited to late to see & hear how beautiful you are & your voice.. You are such a classy lady... RIP Whitney Houston a.k.a Nippy b.k.a The Voice 😘💔😢😪

- The Whitney I Remember

I remember when this CD came out. Hearing Whitney’s soaring highs and powerful lows just made you “feel” her songs! Talk about a soundtrack of your life? Great memories of times past flood my presence when I listen to these tracks! If you were there, you know what I mean, if you were too young or not yet born, you’re in for a real treat if you love great and timeless talent and music.

- 25MILLION

been her great fans through her best and her struggles…the music and voice are her legacy…great album

- Classic!

Simply the best!!

- Blown

To come under her first album to vilify this wonderful artist and claim to be a yourself fan is disgusting…this album was just a small peak into who she is was and always will be THE VOICE PERIOD…SHE gave every song good love and each track made me love her all at once…and for her I’ll forever have the greatest love..that’s what a review is! Keep your judgemental it’s a shame perfection to yourself. This album alone is why SHE ALONE IS THE VOICE!! SIMITE

- Whitney

- Theheartofthematter

Still can't believe you are gone. I was in junior high I cried over a boy. The boy is long gone but your music will be part of my life. Thank you....

- R.I.P Whitney

I listened to Whitney throughout my teenage years.....I LOVED HER MUSIC and it was a part of my life. I felt her loss and was and still am in shock. I stood home on my birthday to watch her going home service, I will never forgot it either. Whitney passes a week before my birthday, and my mother passed away a week after my birthday. These words go out to BOBBI KRISTINA, it's not easy at all dealing with the loss of a mother, I lost my mother 4 yrs ago. Your mother will always be with you. Just think of all the good times u had and smile cuz ur mother would want you too! I must say that everyone who spoke kind words for Whitney was very heart warming. WHITNEY WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON WITHIN OUR HEARTS.

- HEAVEN'S ANGEL...

WE MISS YOU AND LOVE YOU WHITNEY!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P.....

- ❤️

R.I.P. Whitney love you

- Whitney Houston

Such a fabulous debut album to start her career. This album screams class all over it. This album gave the rest of the R&B ladies a run for their money in the 80s and the only other person that was compatible with her during the rest of the 80s (R&B wise) was Anita Baker. Her success was well deserved and she will always be remembered for a very long time. That album artwork never gets old, pure classic album.

- Whitney

I was in a hotel one night in Manhattan, the same one that Whitney was staying in, and just happened to be coming in from a dinner engagement the same time she was arriving back herself. She had an entourage of bodyguards to protect her unlike I have ever seen before. Too bad they couldn't protect her from herself. What a tragic loss, such a remarkable talent. I love you Whitney, and will miss you forever.

This is a very good album, all before her drug voice came. She just sang so soft n she was shyer then. R.I.P baby

- Classic R & B

One of the best albums I own! Whitney was a force to be reckoned with. She had the most amazing voice. It’s a shame that her personal issues and demons overshadowed her music and not only cut her life short but her music career as well. Her one of a kind voice is truly missed! It’s hard to find music like this anymore!

- Classic

Legendary Album

- Whitney Houston album April 1985

Just a great album. She will always be remembered for her powerful wonderful voice. Such a shame she is no longer with us. Gone far too early. RIP.

- Before the Fame

I loved this album, I got given this to me by a person who worked for a record company distributing it in Australia, I played it non stop, I know my neighbours were probably glad when I moved out. 1985 what year for music everywhere Australia 🇦🇺 & USA, I had never heard anyone like Whitney before, we listened to a lot of Motown, Opera, etc as a kid, having grown up with non traditional white music, Whitney still blew me away. I have come back to buy it for myself, still have the original vinyl but if I’m out of range of any internet I still want to be able to listen to Whitney.

- Great songs mixed with some fillers

I remember buying this before it even hit the charts. Saving All My Love and How Will I Know were, and still are, great songs. A couple of Anne Murray covers were not as good, but she put herself on the map with a George Benson cover with Greatest Love and showed us "The Voice".

- Timeless

Still fantastic 30 years on!

WELL WHAT CAN YOU SAY, WHAT A VOICE BUT UNFORTUNATLY AS WITH MOSIC MUSCIANS DRUGS FIND THE WAY INTO THERE LIVES. GOD BLESS WHITNEY R I P AND MAY WE ALL PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.

- What a talent, wasted to drugs

Bobby Brown has a lot to answer for. First his wife then his daughter. He must be so proud!!! 32 years ago I would have bet my life this woman would have been still at the top while Madonna had faded away. Just goes to show. Makes me really angry to know that such a talent really only had 7 years at the top. Shame she’s gone and a true loss to music.

- Amazing

Mariah's debut was a rip off of Whitney's. Even MC's other albums are a lame copy of The Queen Whitney.

- Best album she did

Not a weak track on the album. Class

- Whitney's best!

The first is always the best as they say..and this albums proves it! The most iconic and emotion filling album. With ballads and typical 80s pop mixed in. Whitney truly showed her amazing talent in this album! I also just bought this in the music store omg best thing I bought on the day! R.I.P angel one of my true icons! <3

- 5* but..

WHITNEY IS AN OXYGEN THEIF!!! Nearly died trying to keep her note. Lindsay Hulse sadly got brain damage doing it. she now thinks shes bette middler.

- Whitney at the Peak

Whitney's debut album (it album back in 1986). Apart from reviving happy memories it's a good debut. Great tracks, and one of the best voices possessed by a female singer. She wasn't unique Barbara Streisand and Kate Bush equally talented. Her performance on the Bodyguard soundtrack probably eclipsed this but this is still well worth a purchase even if it's only to replace a scratchy vinyl copy :)

- Classic!!

Mariah's debut had ballads, pop, RnB, Dance, Rock and just classics... Like Whitney's does... But i can't help but feel there's something missing... Love "Take Good Care Of My Heart"! Classic album!! x I'm gettin this for sure!!

- Absolutely perfect

💕💕💕💕

- Whitney's Classic Debut.

Used as the demo for the new CD players during the 80's as her voice suited the format so well. Clarity, power of Whitney's voice and the arrangements of the overall production used in the makiing of this album, made it very classy, like the cover or sleeve it came in. Simply outstanding track "Greatest Love of All" included. Listen to her voice on this... the highs and lows reached without any effort . This is one of my Favs of the 80's and still is. crank it up on the hifi! and enjoy!!

- R.I.P

So sad another talented singer dies .

- A diva who will be around 4 a long time 2 come :)) :D

I love Whitney - she is such a great singer and performer - Lets support her and not criticise her XXXOOO.

- Your music will ensure your legacy.

Her debut album in 1985 provided us with confirmation of the arrival of a marvellous talent, a true Diva of her generation. Hearing this music will always return great personal memories - a soundtrack to our lives. Thank you and God bless. R.I.P.

- The Biggest Selling Female Debut Album of All Time

Whitney Houston the biggest selling female debut album of all time. Clive Davis and his team took over 2 years to make this album as they nurtured Whitney's amazing talent. This culminated in an amazing album, producing number one singles like Saving All My Love For You, How Will I Know and Greatest Love of All. To date, this album is still selling fast; Whitney blew the music industry apart. An international mega star was born.

- The most impressive debut of them all....

A true classic - only Whitney can mould upbeat pop songs such as How Will I Know and classic ballads like the Greatest Love of All onto one album. Still as refreshing and satisfying a buy for any lover of pop and RnB now as it was in 1985.

- Whitney Houston

I only have this Album on record and tape. Today is the day to buy it again. RIP WHITNEY <3

Whitney Houston Wiki

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, film producer, and philanthropist. Known as "the Voice", she was ranked second on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest singers of all time and is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 220 million records worldwide. Houston influenced many singers in the recording industry and was known for her powerful, soulful vocals, vocal improvisation skills, as well as popularizing the use of gospel singing techniques in pop music, and live performances. She had 11 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the only artist to have seven consecutive number-one singles on the chart. Houston also enhanced her popularity by entering the film industry. Her accolades include eight Grammy Awards, 22 American Music Awards, two Emmy Awards, and 30 Guinness World Records. Houston's inductions include the Grammy Hall of Fame (twice), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, the BET Walk of Fame, the Soul Train Hall of Fame, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, the New Jersey Hall of Fame, and the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. Houston began singing at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. Hit singles from the albums, including "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", established her as a catalyst in the acceptance of black female artists on MTV. Her third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), yielded two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, the title track and "All the Man That I Need". Houston's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 received widespread media coverage. Houston made her acting debut with the romantic thriller film The Bodyguard (1992), which despite its mixed reviews became the tenth highest-grossing film to that date. Its soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and remains the bestselling soundtrack album of all time. It generated multiple hit singles, including "I Have Nothing", "I'm Every Woman" and "I Will Always Love You"; the latter won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, spent a then-record 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single by a woman in music history. Subsequently, she went on to star in the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996), and she recorded their respective soundtracks; the former scored her last Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", while the latter, produced by Houston herself, became the bestselling gospel album of all time. Houston's first studio album in eight years, My Love Is Your Love (1998), spawned multiple hit singles, including the title track, "Heartbreak Hotel", "It's Not Right but It's Okay" and the Academy Award-winning Mariah Carey duet "When You Believe". As a film producer, she produced hit series such as The Princess Diaries, The Cheetah Girls and multicultural movies such as Cinderella (1997) and Sparkle (2012). Following the music and film success, she renewed her contract with Arista Records for $100 million in 2001, one of the biggest recording deals of all time. However, her personal problems began to overshadow her music career. Her 2002 studio album, Just Whitney, received mixed reviews, while her drug use and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown received widespread media coverage. After divorcing Brown, Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her final studio album, I Look to You (2009). In February 2012, Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. News of her death coincided with the 2012 Grammy Awards, which took place the day following her death, was covered prominent internationally along with her memorial service and created a spike in sales of her music. Coverage of Houston's death was ranked as the most memorable entertainment event in television history, according to a study by Sony Electronics and the Nielsen Television Research Company. Her assets amounted to $250 million, earned over a 25-year career. Her life and career were dramatized in the 2022 biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
