The Queen of the Funk Groove has returned. She is certainly a force to be reckoned with in the Music world. This CD is something that the Music landscape has been missing for some time. It doesn't matter whether she's singing Jazz or R&B it's always a pleasure to hear her Funk up the place. Thank you Chaka for such a funktastic CD.
Please, just retire. Your career ended years ago honey.
terry, jimmy, the flyte team (big jim and the avila bros) i thank you for bringing Chaka back on shore. chaka you are the best #1. i'vebeenfunked. ck4ever.
This album is bomb, Chaka has taken it back to true R&B music. With her voice and beats this is sure to make a dent on the charts, this is bomb..Go CHAKA!
Chaka Khan, was, is, and forever will be one of the most beautiful and gifted songbirds our earthly ears will ever be blessed to hear...she always brings a blissfully funky passionate vibe.
Classic, substantial soul from an icon.
Harkening back to her days with the groundbreaking r & b group Rufus, Funk This is an excellent set of originals and remakes that provide ample evidence why Chaka is considered perhaps the greatest funk vocalist ever. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have assembled a set of first-rate musicians and compositions that fit Chaka like a glove, further reminding us that Funk This is going to be something we have not heard in quite some time. Several reviewers of Funk This have claimed this to be Chakaâs first release in 10 years (since âCome 2 My Houseâ). Those reviewers negligently overlook 2004âs wonderful Classikhan, which had Chaka teamed with the London Symphony Orchestra. Though almost entirely remakes, it cannot be flatly said that this is her first release in 10 years. But while on âClassikhanâ Chaka lends her formidable jazz and blues chops to re-imagine some classic songs (including scorching versions of âDiamonds Are Forever,â and âGoldfingerâ), she brings pure, unadulterated funk to her latest endeavor. From Tony Maidenâs guitar licks on the opener âBack In the Day,â and Chakaâs first line âGuess I grew up fast/in Chi-town,â you know you are in for a singular performance. There are too many other highlights to mention: the hook-drenched âWill You Love Me?â (with its âwall of Chakas); the funky âHail To The Wrongâ (those handclaps!); the beautifully rendered and structured âAngel;â the aching âOne For All Time;â Chakaâs reading of Joni Mitchellâs âLadies Manâ and Jimiâs âCastles Made of Sandâ (the latter featuring Jesse Johnsonâs guitar doing a darn good Hendrix interpretation); the gritty version of Dee Dee Bridgewaterâs âFoolish Foolâ (with Aaron Spearsâ kickdrum at the bridge), and the blistering duet with Mary J. Blige, âDisrespectful.â Though on the last, weâve heard the backbeat before (Amerieâs âOne Thingâ), nothing (and noone) can match the vocal pyrotechnics on display. When Chaka belts out the last verseââ You so/Shady/Lowdown/Crazy/You think that I want to see you?/You out yoâ mind??!!ââand she hurls that last word âmindâ into the stratosphere, you know you are in the presence of a vocal style that can never be duplicated. But what gives this set a five-star: Chakaâs rendition of Princeâs âSign âO The Times.â Every aspect of this song is so on point. Her sizzling interpretation is put atop a rhythmic stew of swirling, punctuating guitar licks, bass, keyboards, and drums. As if that were not enough, it morphs into sonic nirvana as the âwhoa, whoa, whoa-aaâ coda from Chakaâs classic âIâm Every Womanâ emerges, and Chaka adds a hopeful declaration to Princeâs excellent but darker lyrics, while belting out highs and lows that are simply not on the charts. Chaka, Jimmy, and Terry have created a set that reminds us all what great musicianship and singing is all about. With an unparalleled combination of vocal range (four octave) and power, Funk This demonstrates once again why Chaka deserves the distinction of having one of the most amazing and influential voices in modern popular music.
Updated funk, smoothe, good for chillin' ; I really enjoyed it. I'm an old head (35-40yo)
Yes the GODDESS we've all known to come and love as Chaka Khan is back!!! She is back with a vengeance and is taking no prisoners. This cd "FUNK THIS" is a great comback for Chaka and those Chakaholics. Chaka dose not hold back. Right from the beginning she let's us have it FUNKTIFIED STYLE with "Back In The Day". Her voice is as youthful as ever. The raspiness does come thru, however the strength of her voice in total just takes over. "Angel" is definitely an anthem for 2007/2008 especailly for the youth today. "Disrespectful" is a slamming joint which the youth can relate to as well. Chaka has Mary singing her butt off. "One For All Time" happens to be my personal favorite where Chaka's voice sounds like a young girl in her 20's, so fresh and so pure. She takes "Sing O The Times" to another level and "packed My Bags/You Got The Love" is reinvented. "Ladies' Man" is sung so beautifully, that it's a wonder she hasn't done a Joni Mitchell song long ago and "Castle Made Of Sand' just stands out. Don't forget "Hail To The Wrong" where Chaka just let's us have here as well. This cd gets 5 out of 5 stars in my book. Hopefully it's a start of more to come without another 3-4 year status.
Chaka Khan is priceless...buy this CD
We old school folk need to suport the artist we grew up with, the ones we made babies by and raised our familes on. If you want to more artist like CHAKA to stay around we must buy there CD's.
Passion from the heart. Production is A+. A credit to the label for staying with a true artist.
It's been a long time coming... Welcome back Chaka..... best tracks, Angel, Disrepectful, Ladies' Man and the track that makes you smile... Super Life..... Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis did yet another wonderful job.
The best Female R&B/Soul CD this year. Chaka is back!
This is the Chaka I grew up with back in the day. Girlfriend is tearing it up, especially that sizzling duet with Mary J. Blige (Disrepectful). I'd buy that album just for that cut alone!!! But everything else is just as powerful, great vocals, the wall of Chakas background on alot of the songs that takes you back to the Rufus days, and even some funkified rock with Jesse Johnson of the Time (Castles Made of Sand). Every song is off the chain!!!! If you like old school with a modern approach, you won't find a better album than this. Welcome back girl and show the world how a real diva does it!!!!
Chaka Khan ..... The name speaks for its self....Whatever this woman touches ....turns Gold !!!!! True fan for life . Frances
Man, oh man. Chaka Khan is not playing on this release right here! Like many others, it reminds me of the music from the Rufus days, yet this is not to say that the music sounds outdated, because it does not. In reality, neither does a lot of the Rufus stuff. This album is full of the stuff that radio was made of back in the 70s, 80s, and some of the 90s, when you could get all types of music on the urban/pop radio stations, as well as album cuts that were not singles. I would buy this cd for "Disrespectful" alone, but thecuts on here are outstanding, especially "Angel" which hit me in the heart the first time I heard it. Overall, THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE!
Welcome back GURL!! This is a great added on classic for Chaka Lovers out there
I never get tired of Chaka's voice. The way she makes her voice twist and turn around a lyric blows my mind! Better get this one!!!!! Listen to "Sign O' The Times". The Sister has the ability to make any song one of her own.....too funky!
I was so excited when the cd was release . I just love that song angel so I didn't listen to the cd i just bought it and downloaded it and it is awful !!! trying to listen to it, thinking it might grow on me but I just can't get through the hold cd because it's terrible . I should have known better she can't even sing her old music anymore, but anyway I guess she got to get paid. she's play out now !!! and that song with Mary J they are screaming they just doesn't sing well together :-( I waste my money and time on that awful cd
thank you so much for bringing back real musiq.....love the new cd
THIS IS THE BEST BODY OF WORK IN WHAT MIGHT BE A DECADE...NO BULL.... SOUL!!!SOUL!!!SOUL!!! PURE 70'S FUNK SOUL!!! ...THIS JOUNT HERE TAKES YOU TO ANOTHER ANOTHER TIME AND PLACE....A BETTER TIME, WHEN IT WAS ALL GOOD
I just purchased this funky CD and let me tell you it is one of the best recordings of Chaka Khan's career. The best tracks according to me ,Back In the Day,Disrespecful,Angel and Sign'o'the Times. It is great to hear the funk that made Chaka Khan a legend. If you are a fan or if you are looking for old school funk buy this CD !!!
WHoa, all you pretender to the R&B throne should be afraid.......very afraid!! The master is back and school is in session. Listen and learn this is how music should be done PERIOD
A freakin' brilliant CD. A must have for old and new fans!
This album not CD is the Bomb...It has been 10 years to long...From the very first cut..crank the volume and get funked up....Can you say GRAMMY.....
Chaka is classic & timeless! Such a great array of tracks and different sounds on this album. She sure shows these up & coming yunginns what it is all about. Amazing!
I have listened to Chaka ever since the Rufus days. Her '80's solo efforts were all good, but, this CD is simply CHAKATASTIC!! Not only does she take us late baby boomers back to the era of classic R&B Funk, but, has manged to reinspire us with an industry that has seemed all but lost.By combining her old school funk with a prestine production, this CD is nothing less than amazing. Jam and Lewis: JOB WELL DONE. Her voice never sounded better. Turn it up, move to the funk, slow burn it with your loved one. This collection is one of the strongest comebacks EVER. BUY IT...YO WON'T BE SORRY
It is so refreshing to know that great R&B can still be written in today's boring music landscape. This collection reminds me of Chaka back with Rufus in the 70's, yet it still is surprisingly fresh. This is a must have for anyone who loves funk and R&B! CCM New York
Off tha Chain!!
I have been a chaka Khan fan forever. Glad to see she back doing some R&B, we seriously needed her input. The album is slamming. My faviorite songs, Back in the Day, You Belong To Me, Super Life, Hail to the Wrong and Angel. The collaboration with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam is great, fantastic. She picked two of the most talented producers. Chaka's writing skills are wonderful. Her voice never sounded better. Please Hurry Buy this Cd!
OMG....THIS ALBUM IS FIA!!!!!!! WHERE IN THE WORLD DID SHE COME FROM?!?!?!? It's ben 10 YEARS! All I have to say is this album is well worth the wait. I give it five billion stars and an A+++++! CHAKA IS FUNKIN LIKE SHE'S NEVER FUNKED BEFORE!!!!
Its been waaaay too long, Mz. Khan!!! From her cover with M. MacDonald to 'Disrespectful' and its smooth harmonies with Mary J. Chaka is back in the saddle again! Real singing, real music, back at last! This is a MUST for any 'ole head' who loved the original music from the 70's of EWF, Rufus, Funkadelic, and more!! Love, love, love it!!!
SHE NEVER LEFT JUST WAS ON VACATION AND BOY YOU CAN HERE SHES HOTTER THAN EVER HOPE SHE ENJOYED 10YEARS OF VACATION WE MISSED YOU LONNIE BROOKLYN NY YOU ARE MY SWEET THING....
Chaka is back! This is the real thing!
She's back! Better than ever! You're our "Angel" Chaka - love ya'! Joe from MA
Ya know, i love everything about CHAKA KHAN, and i desperately love how she doesn't abandon her sound on this new album and she sticks to the typical ChAKA style, yet gives us new material that is just awsome!!!! just WOOO sang it!
I've loved Chaka Khan for many years. Her music always strikes the right chord in my ear. FUNK THIS is filled with great vocals. The deepening in her voice makes her sound almost Aretha Franklin like at times. The rough rock edge strikes a sharp contrast the the peaceful soul vocals that keep the ear always engaged. The gospel-like harmonies are just perfect, too! The arrangements range from classic soul, funk and current, making it enjoyable to Khan-atics and new comers alike. Favorite tracks: Angel / Pack'd My Bags- You Got The Love / Super Life / Angel (Mr. Mig Radio Remix) WAY TO GO, Chaka! I FEEL FOR YOU!!!!!!
