Phil Collins of the last several years has proven that watered down pop and third rate soul cover tunes has a market somewhere out there - amazing!
For all the tough critics out there...tone it down! Phil took some of his favorite tunes and covered them...that's it! He wasn't looking to win any awards. He's already had a very successful career and now wanted to make an album for fun. I think the album shows how much these songs have influenced him over the years and you can hear his "happiness" in each song. Sometimes it's just nice to do something you enjoy and offer to share it with others. Phil's keepin' it real...gotta love that!
Sorry but "Uptight" sounds like a speeded up version of Alvin & The Chipmunks doing Motown. The other songs aren't much better. I really wanted to like this but there is just no way and $18. Someone at Atlantic is on crack.
it might not be as good or exciting as an album of new songs, but i can't wipe the smile off my face after listening to it.
Title says it all. Phil is the man.
If you are a real motown lover you'll stick with the originals.
I am loving the whole album and am glade to hear Phil's voice an a new album. Phil you are the best.
While it's nice to know the folks who wrote these tunes will pull in some $ on the back of these covers, your money ($18!!??) would be much better spent on the original tracks because Phil - though he clearly loves these songs - adds nothing of value to them. It's like a snoozy demo for some wedding band.
What happened to the Phil Collins of "Face Value" or even early Genesis or Brand X. The man has more music in his little finger than most but decides after all this time to do a cover album of old Motown music? C'mon Phil, where's the creativity? I know you can't play anymore, but you can still write. Remember, Beethoven wrote the 9th Symphony while totally deaf!
Good to hear Phil, good album.
I can't really recommend this collection. Phil is my hero, but his voice here sounds so whiney. It's just not listenable. Sorry, Phil; better luck next time...if there is a next time. Also, this version is way too expensive. You can find it elsewhere on the net for much less!
I've listened to the album a few times so far. I find it enjoyable and somewhat uplifting to hear these classic tunes in a similar, but different light. The band / production is exceptional---great sound. Especially in that it's not 'current' -- it isn't meant to be. The tone fits the period --- 40+/- years ago! Phil's voice fits the majority of songs well. A handful seemed a bit out of reach though. Highlights for me: Girl (Why you wanna make me blue) Heatwave Aint Too Proud To Beg Papa Was a Rolling Stone (EXCELLENT!) Blame It On The Sun Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer Standing In The Shadows Of Love Don't Look Back Do I Love You Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever Relly Got a Hold On Me Dancing In the Street Going Back As a casual fan of Motown, it's quite clear that Phil's affection for the period rings through on each track. I cannot understand why so many reviewers took the time to bash the record; almost as if they don't understand the point of the album. Going Back is simply that...going back--to a period of truly amazing and talented songwriting. Hats off to PC for dusting them off the top shelf.
When I first hear that Collins was going to do a cover album I was pretty happy, but this album only had very few "okay" tracks. I was just happy to hear collins again.
...sounds like the 17th episode of the 27th season of 'seinfeld', airing on an obscure uhf channel late in the eve, received via rabbit ears, viewed on an old black and white zenith tv and heard through a monophonic one piece earphone. and of course the cheese - ridden ad, interrupting the antics of jerry even trying to stand up at juncture, hollers " all yours for $17.99 " i'd rather purchase whatever hans conried was hawking - i believe it was the polyvetsian dance by borodin. give your money to a favorite charity, along with doing something for your favorite charity, and feel happy again
Truthfully, I haven't listened to the whole album. I just previewed the tunes, but that was enough. Perhaps then it is unfair of me to render a judgment, but after all, that is why iTunes lets you preview the tracks, to hear whether you want to buy them. As excited as I want to be for the newest Phil Collins album since God knows when, sadly, I'm not. I have been listening to everything Phil Collins the better part of my life. I love songs like One More Night and Follow You Follow Me. Okay, so the latter is a Genesis song, but it's still Phil vocalizing. In The Air Tonight, another example of a song uniquely Phil's and iconic as hell. Others have said and I agree that there is nothing unique about this release. It's safe, not adventurous, and certainly not iconic. Another poster said that true Motown fans will stick with the originals, and they are correct. I don't mean at all to sound racist by this, and I hope I don't offend anyone, but there are very very few caucasians who can truly cover a Motown song with the same quality, dignity ad soul as a person of color. I don't know if Phil has it in him to crank out something else that is unique. Not that I wish anything bad upon Phil, ever, but it seems like his best music came from him going through bad times in his life. All due respect to Phil, it just feels like you said one day "Hey man, I need to make some more money, I don't have anything original to bring to the table at the moment, so let me just remake some Motown tunes and call it day - and because it's me, people will go out and buy it." I would much rather have waited longer to hear something original and good like it was, from Phil. Come back again, Phil!
Hearing Phil after so long is a given, especially if you consider all the terrible autotuned songs out today. That being said, this album is not amazing, proven, because the songs aren't original from Phil, but instead covers. Some songs don't sound that good, but apart from those, I have to say "Going Back" (the song) is excellent and nothing short of a masterpiece. Phil did a great job on that one, and it's a great way to end the album with. It will probably be the best song from this album. Not excellent, but certainly worth the $18, even if for nostalgia.
It's great to hear some new material from Phil after 8 years. I will say, I didn't know exactly what to expect when he announced this album, but I am surprised and pleased at the result. First I have to say that a white, middle aged Briton doing Motown reminded me of a movie back from the 80's called "The Commitments" I believe, about a group of British teen musicians that wanted to play soul. Off on a tangent I know, but still...it shows my age a bit. I grew up with Phil (and Genesis) in his heyday in the 80's. That means I'm also familiar with things like 8 tracks and records and old mono recordings. This albums stirs nostalgic memories for me. THe recordings themselves were designed intentionally to mimic the somewhat hollow sound of records in the 1950's and 1960's. I believe they accomplished this with flying colors. However, the sound does not necessarily appeal to those who have grown up on nothing but stereo. It may be a bit of a shock or disappointment to them as they are used to very high quality digital music (although most of it is BAD music, it's still digital). I thoroughly enjoy the mellow "mono" tones...it harkens back to my youth and, at my age, that's always a good thing. Well done on that point. If I was a successful recording artist worth nearly a half a billion dollars, had my own recording studio and resources, and had the proper equipment, I admit I would certainly do an album like this. This is a labor of love...it's FUN. Music is meant to be fun, and this selection of tunes is definitely fun to listen to. There are a few tunes which seem generally flat, partially as Phil's intonation doesn't necessarily lend itself to them and partially as they are generally rather dull selections. However, other songs are absolutely perfect. "Ain't To Proud to Beg" is one such tune...Phil's voice is perfect for the song and it almost jumps into your soul. "Heatwave" is a very respectable remake, very true to the source material. "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" has a groove that just won't quit. Phil has always had a Motown influence to his music ("Behind the Lines" from Face Value comes to mind) and it is obvious here that he was attempting to pay tribute to those who helped make him the musician he is today. I'd be willing to bet he had a blast making this album; I wonder if this is almost like a mid-life crisis thing for him...a way to relive his own youth while helping a number of the rest of us remember the good times we had in days gone by. All in all, this is a fun, enjoyable album- especially for those into Motown or into Phil. I have enjoyed listening to it and would recommend it to anyone. It is not a perfect, mega-blockbuster album but it really doesn't have to be. I think Phil did what he wanted to and hopes that others can feel that in the music.
After all these years of waiting for a Phil album, one's expect new songs, new material written by this master of composition, but I'm really dissapointed by this release. Why cover songs,it's boring.I respect a lot phil as musician and composer.I guess at this point there's nothing to prove with his career. He's been a sucess for many decades.Just hope this is another album for this amazing musician.By the way,why pay $18 dollars?,it's ridiculous, overpriced.Get it if you want BESTBUY has it for$7.99 half price if anyone really need this album.don't get ripped off.
I've always enjoyed the multi talented Phil Collins music. Not this!... it does indeed sound like The chipmunks. I don't know what happened to the dudes voice but it ain't good. Buyers would do better to purchase the original Motown versions of these classic tunes-simply because they are much better and the music tracks are almost completely identical.... what were the producers thinking? I wont pay a penny for any of these songs if only because he's been known to do much better work.
Seriously, what arrogance Collins has to release this album! It is more likely that his hair will grow back (and he did have a mean mop) than it is that I will donate a single penny to his retirement fund.
I like most of the covers Phil did. True on a few his voice sounds a little off or "whiney" but most of the songs are pretty good! I really did enjoy this. I like the originals, but this was a refreshing change--- a little bit modern but not so much that it takes from the originals and sounds too much changed.
Stevie Wonder, Temptations, and every other Motown group would be ashamed. You're doing them and yourself an injustice. Seriously just stop.
This sounds like Phil Collins after he has been sucking on a helium balloon! Who is this? Is this a joke or something? Horrible!
I don't know why people don't like this! It's so refreshing to hear his voice. :)
