- Going Back to listen again and again

Seems like there are a lot of people providing reviews here who know very little about Phil and his music. This album is perfect in every way. The packaging, the production, the arrangements, the sound, the band, the vocals ...Phil gives these Motown tunes new life. These well know and lesser known songs deserved to be given another outlet for appreciation. Phil did an amazing job of recreating the sound and excitement of the original songs with his band (including members of the original Funk Brothers!!!). His voice gives a fresh feeling to the songs with bit of edge. I recommend the 2 disk version of this release.

- Voice

Love Phil but what happened to that sweet voice... It sounds off not smooth at all?

- Very disappointing

Well, if it wasn't the fact that is it Phil Collins who made this album, it would have sold very little. This is very disappointing. Phil sining is off (actually I am being nice ... ), the arrangements are very ordinary and the the whole package is .... well very ordinary.

- Phil...Phil...Phil...

I like Phil's work and I appreciate that he likes these songs, but his interpretations are dim shadows of the originals. Given the choice, I would much rather compile a playlist of the original versions. This is a once-only listen.

- Kinda sad.

What happened here? Sounds like dinosaurs snoring... Why do we need this album when the originals are so much better? Isn't there a ton of great music left to be recorded in the world that we need to make pale copies of existing stuff? Mr. Collins should know better, especially with the illustrious career he's had so far. I'm all for knowing when to call it quits in one's career. What is it they say? Exit while you are at the top and you will forever be remembered as a winner? Sorry, but this album is not leaving me with a very good impression at the moment.

- disappointment

I agree with other reviewers in that unfortunately Mr. Collins does not have the vocal capacity that these classic Motown hits require.

- um.....what the?

Really? Seriously?......Always been a big Phil/Genesis fan....but I have to say that this is not what I want to hear from an artist of his caliber. Sorry Phil ;-(

- Great To Hear Some Upbeat Music!

It is great to hear some positive and up beat and "happy" music from an ex-Genesis member. I am Genesis fanatic in all its incarnations, but I have found that most of their offerings of late have been really dark. This album sounds like Phil took and bunch of really great upbeat songs, some of his favourites, and did true homage to them. The band sounds great and consists of some of the top musicians of our time, no arguments there for sure, the Funk Brothers are legendary. Sure, Phil's voice sounds vintage, but it should for someone who is almost 60, and the guy can really sing. It is interesting that in Jazz and Classical music, the older an artist gets the more respected they are for their legacy and work, yet in Rock we want everyone to remain eternally young. In closing, a news flash for everyone, Phil was a drummer, and many of the world's best drummers sat at the back of great bands and played kit on some pretty heady art rock, but then they went home and listened to music they actually LIKED. Genesis fans have to come to terms with the fact that Phil's favourite music was never Prog rock, this is the stuff he liked the best and he nails it on this record.

- Total trash and quite sad

This album reminds me of Rod Stewarts attempt at creativity in releasing his Great American Songbook collection. The first two were okay. The last two were horrendous. Nevertheless this is basically as bad as it gets with these attempts to relive and reinvent the music of a bygone era and Phil Collins sounds like some cheesy karaoke host belting this crap out at some local dive. It's quite embarrassing how low some artists will go to make a buck and keep a flagging career on life support. Save your money for more worthy albums. This ain't it.

- really bad

Really Crap, he doesn't have the voice for these song's

- excellent.

well, lets start by replying to that other reviews. as for F for originality, this album wasn't supposed to be original. It was supposed to and is an album of Phil revisiting the songs he enjoyed in his youth. I know that a lot of people want "new" songs by these guys, but this album is great nonetheless. Phil has pored his heart into this album and you can hear it. Having the Funk Brothers on this album compliment PC excellent arrangements. This album fulfils Phil's 8 album commitment to Atlantic Records. Not sure how he'll release after, most likely digitally. Most of the world is unfortunately going that way. I was unfortunately because I work in a CD shop. Sales are great though. In Canada retailers last unlike in America where the economy is so bad that even Virgin Megastore couldn't afford to stay open. This album is excellent and a must for any TRUE Phil Collins fan. Yes, some dinosaurs will complain that its not Genesis, but its not supposed to be. This is Phil being Phil. Take it or leave it. I think he's done a AMAZING job on this album and hope to hear more stuff when he feels ready to release new stuff. True fans respect Phil choice in the mean time. But should this be his "last" album release, WELL DONE. Its great and been a pleasure to listen to.

- Going Back

Just listened to it have to say " well done Phil" love it !! Especially " Going Back" track .. And what can you say about Motown tracks... Any time any where ! But Phil's got a voice I could listen to forever .. It's a hit for me !

- Staying true...

First up let me say that I'm a huge Phil Collins fan so it's a given that I am going to be slightly biased. Having said that, I'm also a realist. I like this album a lot. For starters, it's great value for money with so many songs on the album. I'm also pleased to hear songs that I've never heard before and I think that Phil is staying true to his own personal feelings and not just trotting out a 'covers' album. The arrangements are tight and the inclusion of some of the original Funk Brothers is evident. For the most part Phil's voice carries these songs very well and there is a sense of sincerity about them. Standouts for me are the slower tracks which really showcase the 'Phil' sound. 'Blame It On the Sun' is particularly good. Other worthy mentions are; 'Nowhere To Run','Take Me In Your Arms, 'Don't Look Back'. 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' is excellent and the groove is outstanding. For fans of Phil this album is a must, for others buy it and be impressed at this man's immense talents.

- Going Back (Deluxe Version)

I like Phil and I like Motown - I particularly like his voice so hearing these songs for me is very enjoyable. It's all a matter of taste, really!

- Going Back (Deluxe Version)

I am a massive fan of Phil Collins, and have been for twenty plus years, but it would appear that on this occasion, my addiction is not sufficient. I am not a huge fan of Motown, but have bought everything that Phil has ever released and assumed that this would be enough reason to buy his first album in eight years. The last time somebody made such a huge error in judgement, it was Tiger Woods thinking to himself "YEAH, WHY NOT, NOBODY WILL EVER FIND OUT"!! There are a couple of tracks on here that I do like, namely (LOVE IS LIKE A) HEATWAVE, which has the bouncy, energetic catchiness of YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE, and so it is no surprise that this was chosen as the flag-bearer of the album. Likewise, TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS and GIRL (WHY YOU WANNA MAKE ME BLUE). After this, I am sorry, but this album descends into self-indulgent mush. It is possible that you are of the view that after 30+ years in the industry, Phil has the right to sing the songs that he wants to sing and that he has enough 'cred' to put out whatever he wants and call it a 'NEW' album. Don't get me wrong, if you like MOTOWN, you will no doubt be a fan, but without a doubt this is for MOTOWN lovers and definitely NOT PHIL COLLINS lovers. If you are both, then you have finally found your Holy Grail, but I, as a common or garden Phil fan, am bitterly disappointed that I have bought this album.
