This is one those albums that is worth one listen. I truly believe that the time that this album came out, everyone wanted to hear catchy dance pop songs from Madonna. American Life is one the best albums ever! It came out the wrong time. After listening to American Life, I think everyone can learn something about themself. It's a beautiful thing, that no one seems to understand or appreicate from music. Songs like Mother and Father, Nothing Fails, and I'm So Stupid are songs that truly make this album stand out and sound amazing.
This album is awesome. I think it shows a side of madonna we've never really seen before. Love it!!!!!
I instantly fell in love with this album when I first listened to it. A more serious follow-up to "Music" but still has an edge with catchy guitar-driven melodies. Love Profusion and Intervention stand way out as some of her best work.
I honestly think this is Madonna's best album she has created. In this album she is pouring out her soul. The music sounds more honest than the rest of her songs on other albums. Its sad that it did not sell more than it did. Oh well at least I love it.
About a year ago, I downloaded this album and skipped through it really fast and thought it was garbage. Now that MDNA is out, I started going through all my madonna albums, and actually took time to listen to this album. I found a ton of great songs on this album. All this time I had these little gems on my iPod and had no clue. LOVE THIS ALBUM. Ignore the critics and give it a shot, you'll see how awesome this is. :)
This entire album is fantastic. It's very raw and tells exactly how Madonna is feeling. My favorite songs are Nothing fails, Nobody knows me, Love profusion, and Intervention. This is some of her best work and it bothers me that it is so underrated. Close minded individuals don't like this album because they associate Madonna in just one specific category. But that's definitely not how I see her. This album shows her artistic side & I LOVE it.
It's really hard to Truly and Honestly critique her albums! Madonna is an amazing writer, singer, producer... she has done WONDERS for music. This album has some of her best music lyrically. I have fallen in love with EVERY song on this album and i can find a way to identify with each one as well. This album has very deep meaning and it's the soundtrack to my life!!!! WAY TO GO MADONNA
MADONNA is so much more than your typical 80's pop queen... she's a true artist. AMERICAN LIFE definitely came out at the wrong time in the music business which is probably why it hailed negative reviews from critics... This album was released in 2003.. The age of Britney Spears & Gwen Stefani ruling the pop music scene makes this record seem a little out of place, but in my opinion that's what made it so great. Typically, pop stars don't write songs of depth... it's usually about heat and sex and clubs..... but Madonna took the time to turn out some truly deep songs.... completely composed by her. AMERICAN LIFE is her best CD of her late career in my opinion.... no it probably doesn't top "Like a Virgin" or "Bedtime Stories"... but as far as 2000- 2009 is concerned.... I think it's her best.
*Songs U need to have* *American Life* 4.5/5 *Hollywood* 4.5/5 Im So Stupid 3.5/5 *Love Profusion* 4.5/5 *Nobody Knows Me* 5/5 Nothing Fails 3/5 Intervention 3/5 X-Static Process 3.5/5 *Mother and Father* 5/5 *Die Another Day* 5/5 Easy Ride 3/5
I'm not sure why this album is considered one of her worst, I personally think it's her best. Sure I like her older songs like "La Isla Bonita", but this is Madonna's best album in my opinion. I'd recommend this album to anyone. I purchased this album 2 months ago and it's still in heavy rotation in my CD player and on my iPod. Here is my track-by-track review: 1. American Life (3.5/5) - Although I like this song, it gets boring after a while. I enjoyed the controversial video, and Madonna's shouting "f**k it", followed by her rap verse. 2. Hollywood (4.5/5) - I like this song alot. Not sure why, though, but it is a really good one. 3. I'm So Stupid (4/5) - Pretty good. I like the beat of this song. 4. Love Profusion (3/5) - Meh. It was good the first few times around. It gets boring. I still like it though. 5. Nobody Knows Me (5/5) - Great dance tune, sounds like it should be on DDR, especially the chorus. 6. Nothing Fails (5/5) - Listen to this song, then look at the album artwork. Although this song seems SOOO out of place, it's a GREAT song, save for the gospel part halfway through *(which is why the radio edit of the song is better - it takes out the gospel part)* 7. Intervention (5/5) - Another great one. It's simple, yet catchy. 8. X-Static Process (4.5/5) - While it's a great song, it's not great enough to get a 5. 9. Mother And Father (4.5/5) - This is a pretty dark song. But pretty catchy otherwise. 10. Die Another Day (5/5) - Great dance song. Love it. 11. Easy Ride (5/5) - I love this song too. Madonna ended the album on a good note. Overall Rating: 4.5/5
What you're looking at (and hopefully listening to) is one of the most underrated albums of all time. In the years directly after the 9/11 disaster, American public opinion was very volatile. Madonna disagreed openly with the impending war, and even abandoned the United States for Europe. This album was completely marred by that fact; Americans hated what it represented. Take note, though, that American Life is not an overly critical album. It only criticizes the USA briefly, then moves on to more introspective songs--some of Madonna's best. The songs on this album show a vulnerable side to Madonna more fully and deeply than any of her previous works, even the thoughtful Ray of Light. Madonna weaves the criticisms and introspective notes in to the music with her stunning pop sensibilities, easily the best in the business, and takes such a deep and meaningful album to a new level. The songs are easily approachable and listenable, despite their meanings. That said, the album also sounds wholly unique. There is not another album like American Life anywhere. In it, Madonna perfected the electro-acoustic sound that she created in Ray of Light and Music, and added warmer touches to create something new and great. The instrumentals, however, serve no purpose other than to heighten the mood of each song; they are rarely the prominent feature of a song and instead stick to backing Madonna's vocals. The vocals are at Madonna's absolute best, and they shine throughout American Life. What you have hear is a album that is actually meaningful as well as good quality musically. It is easily Madonna's most important work, and it's a shame that America wouldn't give American Life a chance.
I remember getting so much crap from friends for loving this album when it came out but clearly I was right cos this is such an amazing album that holds up. Clearly her most underrated album.
I loved it when i first heard it! One of her most personal albums, too bad people didnt give it a chance. It didnt exactly come out at tbe right time but still a great album! Key tracks : nothing fails, love profusion, easy ride and hollywood.
The issue with "American Life" is that it just doesn't work out as a whole. The album is very inconsistent ranging from pop songs, country songs, and electropop. When "American Life" hits the right notes, it's amazing. When it hits some pretty sour notes, it's pretty rough. What's a little unsettling is that she could have went the balls-to-the-wall route with "American Life" or the more smooth path "Love Profusion", yet she kind of sandwiches those routes together. However, this album did keep me indulged and it honestly wasn't bad. What's amusing though is that every time Madonna makes a solid album or two or three, she then comes out with a dopey album. While the slip-up albums aren't great, they still are good. And let's face it, Madonna has never made a bad album. "American Life" comes as a mild recommendation. Great lyrics but there's no hook or depth. Yet, it's still sufficient.
this is one of the best by FAR albums i own. if you are going to buy one song, DONT. :) buy the whole thing, because if you like one of the songs you will probably like them all :D but...if you have to just buy a few...here are the best!! 1) American Life. yea..it's really good. 2) Nothing Fails. amazing. this is tied for #1. 3) Mother and Father. I am not really a fan of die another day? I don't know...just not as awesome as the other stuff. :D --
In this album Madonna is more real than she has ever been. She talks about real issues no more glam. It is almost like a catharsis of her character since she's leaving the glitzy pop tunes and talking about things like love, war, parents, life's journey, deep things. I recommend listening to this as its a side of Madonna that is more than just dancy pop.
This is Madonna's most personal work. And unfortunately, like Erotica, many people passed this one because the lyric content was too blunt. I have to warn u though this album is great for the true madonna fan who loves everything Madonna, because we know and understand her music and love everything she does. i do sometimes wish she worked with more than one producer rather than just Mirwais on this album. but the music came out great. Great tracks to download for new fans: American Life (album) American Life (Missy elliot mix) American life (Paul Oakenfold downtempo remix) - My favorite!!!! Die Another day Nothing fails Nobody Knows Me I'm So stupid Love Profusion
This album should've been named Masterpiece because that's what it really is. Best songs, best vocals, best lyrics, best music, best message, best accompanying tour and best everything ! Everything about this album is absolutely amazing and it does not deserve the way it was treated. The single choices weren't fair as more songs deserved to be released as singles and the way the era was left for dead is so depressing. This isn't sex, this isn't a beautiful woman in revealing clothes, this isn't a love letter, this isn't an "I love him but he ditched me" kinda of album, it's a whole new meaning, a whole new angle that Madonna elaborately explored. I love it, it's my all time favorite album!
I watched a number of interviews with Madonna from 2003, and it looks to me as if she had become ashamed of her past, and wanted to actually make a positive impact with her music. Nobody could take her seriously, so she gave up. Now she just puts on the same charade that she's been using since the 80s. This album was her attempt to make a positive impact. I will admit that some of these songs sound very harsh and may be somewhat unpleasant to listen to. Be that as it may, listen to the lyrics, and find out what's really on Madonna's mind.
As others have stated before, this album was trashed by the critics. I've always wondered if this was because of the time it was released (making anti-war statements at the start of a war), poorly released singles (American Life and Hollywood are two of the worst tracks), or because it followed two of Madonna's most acclaimed albums (Ray of Light and Music). Whatever it is, this album is wonderful and shows Madonna as we've never seen her before. If you don't want the whole album, there are a few tracks to give thought to. Nothing Fails is by far the standout track. One of the best songs of her career in my opinion. Also give Love Profusion, Intervention, and Die Another Day a try.
I bought this when it came out and I could not really get into it like all of her albums to that date because it is a little challenging but I was listening to it at work yesterday and all of a sudden it happened. It clicked. I thought to myself," This is really a great album!". It's pretty deep if you really "listen" to each song. All I can say is that this album was way ahead of its time. I will enjoy it even more still now that I know what it's all about!
Anyone who found Madonna's recent albums (Hard Candy, Confessions) a bit too "bubblegum" and not as mature, intelligent, and sophisticated (lyrically and musically) as Ray of Light, will love this album. I actually like American Life more than Ray of Light.
It took me a few years to give this album a serious listen. When I gave it an honest shot, I soon realized it is by far my favorite Madonna album. I often see it referred to as Madonna's "only album to not have a top 10 hit." This makes perfect sense to me - this is not the type of music that becomes popular on the radio, in most cases. It can be meaningful, though, to fans and non-fans alike. At least for me, Nothing Fails is the weak point content-wise. Pretty much everything else runs at full-throttle. An exhilarating album, and one that I learn or notice something new from every time I listen, even now. My only sadness is that more music from her in this vein would have been wonderful. Even if she's moved on, I doubt I ever will.
This album was derided when it came out, but I was drawn to it. It is in my opinion, her most mature and revealing album. It is representative of where she was in her life at the time and how she had grown and was starting to really see herself and accept how she has evolved. Great album, is all I have to say. I lost my cd and I am now downloading it on my IPOD......it is a must have! You will enjoy, and the American Life single should be re-released now, I bet people would love it and embrace its message now! How prophetic that song and video was :)
The simplicity of the production is what makes this album so amazing. Definitely one of Madonna's best albums
This album has a big perspective at the time of its release and now with a new admistration its kinda fun to listen to you get a strong idea of what she was saying at the time. And now that she is a bit wiser when it comes to lryics and release date ( while im being serous). this is an ablum with songs like Hollywood or Die Another Day that really stick. I cant stop listening for day! Amercain life has a good tone with vocals and the real treat. now that its 2009 its good to look back on the great and maybe contorvsial of Amercain life (Album).
It's hard to compare every album Madonna has done, with that said, I do find myself listening to three of her albums the most… American Life, Confessions on a Dance Floor, and Ray of Light. American Life is one of her best. LOVE IT!
I over looked this album at first. After a while i realized how beautiful this album really is. This album is very deep. I think Madge has always been preceived as the "material girl"but, with this she totally disproved that. This album gave as an intricate look into the inner workings of Madonna. This album is sensitive and vulnerable but strong and assertive at the same time. It shows us that under her hard exterior she really does have somthing to say. This album was totally over looked by American public. I don't think it's a bad album it was just released at a bad time. My favorite song on the album is "Easy Ride". I've never been moved to tears by a song but this made me cry. This crosses the "Borderline" of pop music, I consider it art.
MADONNA never ceases to amaze me w/her constant re-invention... Pop culture has always been under her wing since her debut in the early 80's...... but in her early 40's AMERICAN LIFE is, in my opinion her most unique record. It's poetic. This record is my personal favorite of her 11 records to date... including 2008's "Hard Candy". After "HC" came out this past year, I was disappointed w/ the re-furbished Jt/Nelly Furtado music she put out, and I started looking back at her career. While yes, her old stuff is extremely fun, erotic, and entertaining... there's just something so unique and different about AMERICAN LIFE.... "Love Profusion", with it's synths and guitar riffs, is one of my favorite songs ever. "Nobody Knows Me", "Intervention", & "Die Another day" follow suit... and the singles "American Life", & "Hollywood" are sooo true to life.... The song "X Static Process" is an amazing look into her inner soul... while "Nothing Fails" is a deep song about love that's unlike any she's known before..... AMERICAN LIFE has the disco pop that made her famous.... but it throws in the deep lyrcis....and guitar driven ballads.....making it in my opinion, her masterpiece. While this CD failed to do much on the charts.... it has been one of the highest fan reviewed Madonna discs.... It's a bummer it didn't take off. Now she's stuck putting out stuff that others have done OVER AND OVER again. That being said... She's a cultural Phenomenon... and that won't change.
After the blockbuster success of her 90's masterpiece Ray of Light and her minimalistic electro confection Music Her Madgesty seemed to still have a lot on her mind. With the impeding war in Iraq and her move to London it appears this album was a look back American culture, mass consumption, materialism and the hawkish and vengeful nature that Americans had taken on after 9-11. Madonna responded with an album of social commentary that didn't go over so well with the public or mainstream media. It didn't help that her lead single American Life was possibly the weakest of her career and contained that awkward rap about a "soy latte'. It's unfortunate b/c the rest of this album is utterly brilliant. X-static Process, Intervention and Love Profusion are some of my favorite songs of Madonna's career. I think people were so accustomed to her singing to a thumping baseline that the stripped down acoustic sound of many of the songs caught them off guard. Regardless if you're a Madonna fan or not this is one album that is definitely worth checking out b/c it's probably the most radical of her last 15 years and far ahead of its time.
I love this album soooo much....it's fantastic <3
Boy, oh boy has American life changed since April of 2003. The same, it turns out, can be said of "American Life." Revisiting this album ten years of, an entirely different album emerges from the one that arrived just after the Iraq War began and was instantly reviled as cold, dumb, sloppy and sour. What seemed plaintive and petulant in 2003 now seems astute; what seemed hyperbolic, melodramatic and preachy turns out to be prophetic; what seemed broody and melancholy, angry and critical, cynical and pedantic now hums with dead-on foresight. Even that rap on the title track, cringeworthy and humiliating-on-her-behalf in 2003, now shines (not to mention provokes chuckles) as precisely what it was intended to be: wickedly shrewd satire, both of culture and of self. Like it or not, Madonna called it 10 years ago: unending and inescapable media saturation. Fame for fame's sake. The eventual heartbreak of our socio-political decisions. An ever-so-slightly nagging hunger to return to a simpler life as we wonder if what we've built is what we were aiming for. 9/11, and its concomitant existential need to regroup and renavigate, looms heavy in the background of these songs, and that's no small thing. There's a sense of innocence lost and a palpable, still-raw shock at how complicated the world had become in the preceding 18 months; the pall hangs heavy enough that it feels at once like a sign of the times and an anachronism. But more effectual an influence on "American Life" is simply the perspective of a woman who looked at herself and the world around her, saw the smoke and mirrors for what they were, and called bu****it. Which is what it seemed like at the time--pure, unadulterated bu****it. (And that we thought so, and said as much so vehemently at the time, only serves to prove her myriad of points.) But if there's one lesson we've learned from Madonna over the years, it's that she is never, ever to be underestimated.
“American Life” is arguably Madonna’s finest accomplishment; no other album is as encompassing, as moving, or as frightfully insightful as “American Life.” Here, Madonna focuses more on critiquing modern American culture than creating chart-topping dance hits. The result is a cultural masterpiece; Madonna further solidified her immortal pop status with this milestone in cultural self-criticism. The criticisms are cold and true, and Madonna makes clear that she does not plan to apologize for her insights. She opens the album with “American Life,” a song in which she declares, “This type of modern life is not for me/ This type of modern life is not for free.” Next comes the airy and loveable “Hollywood,” a song that highlights the destructive nature of Hollywood: “They like the smell of it in Hollywood/ How could it hurt when it looks so good?” Madonna performed the song alongside Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Music Awards; ironically, Britney seems the embodiment of self-destructive Hollywood culture. “I’m So Stupid” is a reflective song in which Madonna questions why she sought to be famous. “Love Profusion” is a delicious and deep piece of art- possibly the best song on the album. Here, Madonna declares, “There are too many options/ There is no consolation/ I have lost my illusions/ What I want is an explanation.” The fifth song, titled “Nobody Knows Me,” contains Madonna’s bold declaration that “No one’s telling you how to live your life/ But it’s a setup, until you’re fed up.” Lyrics such as these give the album its vast proportions; they are Madonna saying that American culture promotes egocentrism, vanity, and materialism. “Die Another Day” is the grand slam of the album, where Madonna succeeds at creating an amazing dance track that doubles as a social critique. Here we see Madonna the Rebel, threatening to “break the cycle,” “shake the system” and “avoid the cliché” of American culture. The song points out the means to survive American culture: amidst a self-centered culture, she will destroy her ego, suspend her senses, delay her pleasure and ultimately close her body. “I guess I’ll die another day,” she muses, like a true 007. “It’s not my time to go.” “American Life” is a true gem in the dance inspired world of Madonna. It is rich, deep, and fulfilling when given the chance.
+SIMPLY WONDERFUL!!!!! "MADONNA" YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!
What a wonderful album. Very Beth Orton. M makes some very deep and moody music with this very special album. Too bad America could not give it a chance cause its some of M's best work.
Fantastic!
Definitely my favorite & most underrated album of Madonna's career.
This has to be on the top five Madonna albums of all time! The lyrics to all the songs on this album are so rich and meaningful and the production is top notch. Madonnas co-producer for this album is Mirwas, a French techno house DJ who also produced some tracks on Madonnas Music album. The sound of the album is a smooth, lush, pure French euro dance sound! Its completely different sounding then anything Madonna has ever done and to this day still sounds fresh and waaaaaaaaay better then the majority of pop music being produced today. With this album, listening to it, one can tell Madonna was going through a true spiritual journey, had a deep political view, and was really speaking her mind. Madonnas American Life album is a true gem and deserves to be heard by everyone all around the world!
I don't consider myself a Madonna fan, as a child of the 80's Madonna's music is part of the soundtrack of my life, but in a pedestrian way 'Like a Prayer' was my favorite Madonna song. I always found the public persona far more interesting than the music, until 'Ray of Light' and this album. I like music that says something in a catchy way, for me this album does that. Through this album you get a glimpse of the person behind the persona that rises above the din of the 2 second sound bites about what she is wearing... or not. Many could disregard this album as another super star being too reflective and winning about their life. But in our culture and media which is obsessed with fame and fortune, and the conspicuous consumption that goes along with it, we would do good to listen. I think Madonna is giving her hammer a ring and I say good for you.
It's kinda sad that this album didn't do better....... I agree with the person who said it was released at the same time. My favorites: "American Life" "Hollywood" "Die Another Day" "Nothing Fails" "Nobody Knows Me" "Love Profusion"
... and then screwed it up by being, well, Madonna! The problem with this album is not the timing of its release. On the contrary, the timing could not have been better. The critique of modern American culture is well-warranted and certainly welcomed from someone whose work has become so iconic to American culture... ... and therein lies the problem. Madonna has built her entire career up capitalizing on an increasingly cynical market's demand for ever-more-shocking imagery. She continues to revel in this and to enjoy it. If "Hollywood" is supposed to be an indictment of the shallow mind games thrashed around out there, why did she use it to promote Hollywood-MTV events? If she's "so stupid" for having wanted to be famous, why does she still show off her quinquagenarian body to the entire world? For those who think this proves that she is no longer a "material girl," why does she not give up her wealth and live among the poor beggars of Africa? Now, I would not do so myself, and I do not judge Madonna if she does not wish to be so monastically ascetic. The charitable causes she has chosen to serve, however, are as vacuous, insipid and impersonal as the culture they come from, that culture to which she has contributed and continues to contribute. In the end, though, the album fails because music is sensory, and let's face it: Madonna's voice is not the most beautiful oral sensation, after all. If you want a critique of American culture, read Mencken. If you want to cultivate good music to fill the gaping voids in modern American folklore, do something more positive: check out just about any composer who died before 1900.
such an underrated album, my favorite. From top to bottom of pure bliss.
I liked this album better than "Confessions On A Dance Floor." It has a lot of great songs and some filler but still an underrated album from Madonna. I remain a fan of hers and I like most of the music she puts out. This was a great personal album from her...more from the heart.
The media put this album down, because Madonna spoke out against the war. But if you listen to it now, you will see that it held up to its time!!!! The tracks are amazing quality, with very futuristic, techno-like sounds and very deep and meaningful lyrics!! I love this album, because it's very spiritual and thought-provoking! People have to understand that music can take you to different levels. This album is both FUN and meaningful! Something that is RARE now days, with all the poker face and I love judas crap! "I'm so stupid, cuz i used to live in a fuzzy dream, and I used to believe in all the pretty pictures, that were all around me, but now i know for sure, that i was stupid... stupider than stupid.." "Sometimes it's such a pleasure, sometimes I wanna tear it all down. It's easy to be lazy, and how to walk away from the crowd... I know the road looks lonely, but that's just satan's game..." "This world is not so kind, people trap your mind, it's so hard to find, someone to admire"... "I want the good life, but I don't want an easy ride, what I want is to work for it, feel the blood and sweat on my finger tips.." My most favorite lyrics are: "So i went into a bar, looking for company, a little sympathy, I tried to find a friend, it's always been the same, this type of modern life, is it for me?".... We all can relate to this kind of thing!!! This by far, the most album that I can relate with song after song! It is very personal, and on a humanistic level! Very smart and down to earth! My most favorite songs are "American Life", "Hollywood", "I'm so Stupid", "Love Profusion", "Nobody Knows Me", "Nothing Fails", "Intervention", and "Easy Ride". I highly recommend that you purchase this album and listen from start to end with an opened mind!
Filled with everything that makes Madonna great, this underrated album is perfect. Full of introspective lyrics, dance beats, on point vocals, and lots of emotion, this is Madge at her best.
I lived for this Album when I first heard it...!!! 10 years later it still resonates with me... Madonna always comes into my life when I least expect...!!! I highly recommend checking it out
This cd is really good!! i dont know why people didnt give it a chance?? this cd is the best of madonna because the cd is so true. i think yall should listin to it it's really good
This album was down graded by the press. It is one of Madonnas best albums, the songs reach out and grab you after the first listen, and after so much time I still run back to this album. She really gives you a door to her soul with these songs. Everyone should give this album a chance.
It's such a shame that people ignored this album since Madonna decided to rebel against americanisms at a time when the entire country was still feeling super patriotic over the 9/11 attacks. Whatever this album is great!
American Life by Madonna was released in 2003 and I loved it from first listen. This is Madonna's least-selling album and that's a shame because this album is brilliant. Every song is personal, raw, and special. I don't skip any tracks, some of the lyrics are a bit awkward but the songs are well-crafted and arranged. I love Madonna when she is angry, I feel her pain in these songs. I highly recommend it! Best song: Intervention.
