- Brilliant

Underappreciated upon its release, this is yet another iconic Madonna album.

- Lifeless and boring. This album sucks

A depressing and boring record. Best track is love profusion. Just buy the single instead Snooooooze

- AmƩricain Life

Best album ,intimate and honest one her best like Rebel Heart;)

- One of her best

I never heard about this album until I decided to check out all of Madonna's albums. Until a few months ago I only heard about Music, MDNA, Like A Virgin, Hard Candy, Ray Of Light and Confessions On A Dance Floor. I listened to American Life, Hollywood, Love Profusion, Die Another Day, I'm So Stupid and I knew this album was a must have. I ordered it on Amazon and I'm pretty happy I did :)

- Unexpected Gems

Not an album for everyone, but definitely some great writing and good vocals. A must for me.

- american life

worst madonna album to date

- Get It. Highly Under Valued Thanks to USA Radio DJ's

By far, American Life was so advance for it's time it leaves little surprise that both Fans and North American Radio snubbed it off and refused to play any of the tracks. Looking back through the years that have passed I have always come back to this album where sometimes alot of material will get shelved for awhile. Big mistake writing American Life as a failed accomplishment in Madonna's career. It is comparable to Yoko Ono and John's work in the 70's. The music industry should be running with their tails between their legs for the lack of support in pure shame. This is one of the most misunderstood album of the last 20 years. You all should give it a second chance. It is one of Madonna's greatest works in her career.

- Great!

This to me is madonnas greatest album. Love every song expecially American life, hollywood, im so stupid, Nobody knows me and Die another day. This is a 100% Must buy!!!

- A Very Underrated Madonna Album

I have to admit, I wasn't too fond of American Life (single). But then I listened to the album as a whole and it made me realize just how underrated this album was. Madonna recorded some of the most unique songs for this record and it sounds like nothing I've ever heard before. "Love Profusion", "Nothing Fails" and "Intervention" are my favourite songs on the album and they exude so much emotion. A fabulous Madge album!!

- One Of Her Very Best

This album is treated horribly unfairly. It contains some of Madonna's most well-written lyrics and the most unique sound of her career. Among these underrated jewels is Die Another Day, probably the best Bond theme in existence. Don't overlook this album, no matter what the so-called professional critics say.

- Most Underrated Album In Madonna History

the music in this album is sensational: Hollywood is incredible, Love Profusion still gets me, and Nothing Fails is *Sigh. BUY IT KIDS. LOL.

- Awsome!!

This Madonna album is awsome to listen to! American Life starts off the album quite well and it drifts off at Nobody Knows Me quite badly. But Die Another Day takes the cake! I Hope she does another American Life sort of album. One thing that annoys me, why don't they have all the maxi-single for the album, It's the same with the album Music. Buy The Album, not just one song, the whole thing.

- Gail

Good but not great. Probably my least favorite Madonna album.

- Overlooked Masterpiece from the Queen of Pop

Amazing album and direction from Madonna. This was the album that made me actually buy one from her, she always seems to push her fans to experience new sounds and maybe if "Nothing Fails" had been the lead single the US wouldn't of ignored this one. American Life is a great commentary on current life and Hollywood addresses our obsession with the famous and has some hot club/dance remixes out there. Nothing Fails is beautiful and I can't believe they were stupid enough not to do a video for this one. Other stand-out tracks are I'm So Stupid, Nobody Knows Me and Mother and Father.

- Madonna at her best.

So far, this is the best album of Madonna. If you like to know what America, love and fame really means to her, then, this is a must own! I Love it.

- Beautiful and heartfelt

I never listened to much Madonna, she always seemed commercial and much like everything else. But after listening to this album I have so much more respect for her. The lyrics alone bring me to tears, let alone the beautiful and unique sounding music. It's such a shame that Madonna isn't known for this type of music, rather then stooping down to a commercial level to satisfy the majority, it's just a pity that the majority seem to be so shallow. This album is beautiful!

- Undervalued Masterpiece

When American Life first dropped in 2003, it was vastly underrated and largely ignored. But what many viewed as Madonna's failed attempt at re-invention is actually her greatest work and a true masterpiece. The album is a stunning blend of natural and unnatural sounds - acoustic guitars suddenly give way to buzzing synth and electronic sounds that simultaneous clash and fit together perfectly. The title track, which opens the album -puts synth and electronic music at the forefront, with lyrics expressing Madonna's disconnection from the country she thought she knew. Hollywood starts off with a simple guitar riff that welcomes a simple drum machine beat to the fray. Tracks like X-Static Process strip almost everything away, leaving a raw and emotional ballad in which the singer calls for help from her faith. Her grief for her mother shines through on the buzzing Mother and Father, while Nothing Fails injects hope into what is otherwise an edgy, dark album. And those are just some of the tracks. I could go on, but I don't think I have the space. Miraiw Ahmazdai's programming pushes the boundaries of music production. Hard synth rhythms defy convention, melodies randomly change direction in mid-song or even verse, and Madonna's distorted and robotic vocals both simultaneously add and subtract emotion to the lyrics. Simply put, this is Madonna's best work: an undervalued masterpiece and the greatest folk album of all time. It's even more relevant today, considering recent global events. Everyone should have - no, needs - this album in their collection.

- An Overlooked Masterpiece. Madonna Takes Risks

This album could be the pinnacle of madonna's artistic career. It borders on the uncommercial, and dares to challenge ideals and issues which madonna herself has lived (and profited of) for years. Many will overlook this album due to it's lead off single 'American Life', but even that track is one of madona's most creative. To me, this album was the sound of madonna taking risks, contrary to her new single 'hung up', and for that, the album is better for it.

- One of her best

Great album

- Madonna

Anything she touchs- she's brilliant

- Must have.

When it comes to Madonna, if you are an absolute minimalist you must have the Immaculate Collection, Ray of Light, Confessions on a Dance Floor - and - American Life. Without it, you are only exploring Madonnaā€™s mass-market melodies, which are still rather remarkable and revolutionary in their own way. But, American Life adds the qualities of honesty and insight to these melodies, something that albums rarely do. It is not an attack at the American way of Life; it is just a way of perceiving it, and mind-you in a brilliant way. It is also about life, really there is wouldnā€™t be much of a need for the word 'American' in the title, the album could just as easily be called "Life". The sound of the album is intricate, catchy at times, harsh in certain points and yet equally as easy to listen to in others. If you get the above albums - including this one - you should come to appreciate the full Madonna spectrum: 80s, 90s and 2000s; Pop, Acoustic, Rock, Electronic... and the like. This album is brilliant. But of course you canā€™t trust a reviewer to identify whether music is good or bad; listening to music is a completely subjective process. But even with that in mind, you wonā€™t regret having listened to this honest and expressive Madonna masterpiece.

- Modern Life!

This is a very good and important album for Madonna as it has real confessions of her life. I think the name American lIfe should be called Modern Life!

- Decent

Ok so I'm a super fan and we have high standards and when this came out I felt a bit let down. It started an era of not hearing madonnas voice which she didn't seem to understand we want to hear. I found it a bit stilted and robotic and jarring. Also too many different sounds that don't mesh. It didn't help that the never regretful Madonna frustratingly insisted the politics stopped the album from being a hit when it was the content and holding this up to music or ray of light just felt well bizarre. I love different phases but this was just off and dated upon release overall. Even after she didn't really listen to her fans committing similar sins on her worst album MDMA. This is the second worst. But I still give it 4 stars because it's better than a lot out there! Also it has some great tracks - Hollywood, love profusion, intervention, I'm so stupid. I'm glad she left the title track off her greatest hits. Enjoy the good tracks they are great.

- One of the best

Often Madonnas best albums are the least successful, this being one of them! This to me is some of her best work and a very underrated album!

- Classic

I don't why this album has so much negativity, I think it's a classic, I'd say some of her best work with the likes of, nothing fails & intervention. I rate it five, in my opinion!

- A grower. Stunning album!

I liked this album at first but I didn't love it. I think that's the problem with it being so underrated. It grows on you when you don't think it will, it truly is amazing! The songs are great like Hollywood, Love Profusion and I'm So Stupid. Totally underrated!

- MDNA

Can't wait for your new work M ... X

- The Evidence of Her Brilliance

This is the BEST Music Album of all time The BEST Madonna album of all time

- Possibly her best record

American life is highly underrated and i strongly belive that this has to be one of her best attempts. It may be a far cry from "like a prayer" or "ray of light" but this batch of songs still try to deliver a message and i advise you to listen to this and figure out the message. Its because its such a diversion from her previous records that anerican life did poor , and when they say that with as low 4 million copies , a terrible record for madonna but so many artists these days would crave to get to the 4 million mark . if you just want to try some songs i recommend Die another day , nothing fails and love profusion.

- Underrated gem!

This is Madonna's unapreciated album but why?Maybe because is introspective and darker than the others of her dance/electronica period. But this is not bad. It is quite a stripped down album and some songs sound like rock or folk songs. These are very good pop tunes.Personal favourites Intervention, Nobody's knows me and Mother & Father both with great bassline. Also Nothing Fails up there with her best ballads and Easy Ride starting slow and bursting to some killer beats half way are brilliant. The only bad track is the So Stupid and American Life must be one of her most average singles.Ofcouse I got this album.Every Madonna fan should own this.

- Highly Under-Rated Album...

Considering the DROSS she has been releasing since 2008, American Life is brilliant. I brought it when it came out (2003... which makes me feel OLD) and loved it then, still love it now. Very good album. I love the use of live instruments which is a rarity in 2019. Catchy album that hasnā€™t aged... probably due to the moderate use of live instruments on some of the tracks. In 2019 Madonna is a desperate has-been, which makes me sad and upset to say that. She has been such an Icon for so many years but her 2019 Eurovision performance summed her up; unable to match the quality that was her heyday... reduced to an Auto-Tune nothing.

- Different pricing

2 different prices in the same store. American Life at Ā£4.99 and at Ā£7.99 ???

- ON A PAR WITH HARD CANDY

One good song on this album. MOTHER AND FATHER. The rest is dismal.

- Weak Effort

The album contains a few OK songs - Nothing Fails and Love Profusion but that's about it. I just want to add that the front cover of the album was obviously inspired by a Kylie Minogue poster from 2002. It seems Kylie was actually influenced by Che Guevara and Patty Hearst before Madonna was. Plus there's also the fact that Madonna was successfully sued by the family of Guy Bourdin after she copied his work in her "Hollywood" video in 2003 without permission. Oh dear.

- So underrated

It's really good and different, just buy it!

- marvelous!

i just love this album! she hasn't record many good albums but this one it's brilliant!

- Under appreciated stunner of an album

This is most definitely her most overlooked album. Thank god for artists that dare to have an opinion & are not afraid to put their head on the block. Thank you Madonna This album might take some a few listens to get it but is worth the effort, the production is stunning & will give a decent sound system a proper workout. The lead single of the same name was way before itā€™s time (it was a warning & we did nothing) her latest track god control is the other bookend to American Life. Play Die Another Day with plenty of volume & marvel at its production. Mirwais is a genius.

- Madonna is getting on a bit!

Give up! I hate your music now! But hung up is kewl! cant wait for the noo album

- Gorge

5 stars. Madonna never skips a beat!

- What is this crap?

This album is so bad it nearly made my ears bleed. Its just a stretch out ray of light. This will always be the forgotten album of Madonna.

- A gem missed

From Cher making her mark on auto tune and Madge using it on this(not a fan) this actually works. Realistically she's never gonna top Like a prayer or good 2nd with Ray of light. I have to say this is very pleasant on the ears and has made me revisit again. This album, just like the 'Music' album are full of hidden gems that if you revisit, you'll hear what I hear. #lifelongfanalways Listening to this again after all these yearsā€¦ Iā€™m not sure what to make of this. It seems sheā€™s really unhappy and just living to keep Guy happy (I may be wrong) . 2 years later she had her 2nd born. She seemed so happy about this, but this doesnā€™t reflect that, Hard Candy , everyone assumed the songs were from further past , Iā€™m not so sure!

- dear itunes

why does the album artwork, rather than show madonna ala che quevara instead have the words Wreck League in a horrific typeface appear on my itunes when i uploaded this album? sort it out

- LOVE IT? BUY IT!

I LOVE this album!! I love madonna n this album is one that really stands out for me! Excellent songs, and the lyrics have so much meaning! I love american life, die another day, mother and father, nobody knows me, im so stupid, love profusion....and the rest but i love them most! xxx

- AMAZING!

This is one of her most under rated albums. I love the whole album its brilliant

- Underrated

This really is a good album, perhaps her least commercial overall hence the negativity, yet very experimental and probably a little ahead of its time. No dud tracks at all....her work with mirwais was heartily underrated, great electronica!! Favs for me are nothing fails, mother and father and gorgeous closer 'easy ride'....fabulous live too.

- Underrated Gem

A shock? To some. A disappointment? To some. More to the point, is it any good? To some. Let's get things straight. In my opinion, this album probably marked the end of Madonna's mega sales era, particularly in the US. She is now making adventurous music that she wants to make and getting to grips with what she wants to express, albeit with an eye on what sounds are 'of the moment' as ever, but less so here than on previous offerings. 'American Life' shows Madonna in a much different light. It's the most personal she's ever been, and in some ways it's all the better for it, representing the nearest thing to a 'singer/songwriter' record she has ever produced. The electro-vibe is more toned down than in 'Music', and this fits with the nature of the songs, and the acoustic sound in many of the songs blends perfectly with it. Disc highlights have to be the beautiful 'Nothing Fails' replete with Gospel Choir, the edgy 'I'm So Stupid', the eminently danceable 'Mother and Father' and 'Easy Ride' with the fabulous looped strings at the end. On the other hand the album lacks the commercial radio friendly appeal listeners have come to expect from a Madonna album. Some may criticise the simple lyrics on this album, and I have read reviews here that refered to them as 'lazy'. In my view they are simple and clear and show what Madonna was feeling when she wrote them. Even if some of the sentiments come across as infantile, hackneyed and cliched, 'American Life' is still an interesting little experiment in an otherwise immensely polished catalogue.

- BUY THIS ALBUM

Beautiful songs, cool production, worth every penny. Buy the whole album, put on your headphones and get inspired. Madonna at her introspective best.

- So ahead of her time

This is Madonna's real confessions. It's just her and her guitar, pure and unapologetic. If only people were mature enough to listen to it with an open heart...

- Stands the time test

I'm listening to this album for the first time today in years. I bought it when it came out in 2003. It really is very very good.

- #JusticeForAmericanLife

An album so relevant in 2020. The album is Madonnaā€™s best without doubt.

American Life Wiki

American Life is the ninth studio album by American singer Madonna. It was released on April 21, 2003, by Maverick and Warner Bros. Records. The album, produced by the singer and Mirwais AhmadzaĆÆ, features references to many parts of American culture. The album is a concept album, with themes panning the American Dream and materialism. These themes reject the reputation Madonna held in the 1980s, earned by her 1984 Billboard Hot 100 number-two hit, "Material Girl". American Life is a folktronica and eurotechno album, influenced by acoustic music. American Life initially received mixed reviews upon release; critics found the album confusing and "about Madonna". Critics also found it "difficult to listen to" due to its awkward and brash production in some songs. However, retrospective reviews of the album have been much more positive, particularly noting its lyrical depth. American Life reached number one in 14 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, and also charted within the top-five of most markets. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) both certified the album Platinum in recognition of one million shipments in the United States, and 300,000 shipments in the United Kingdom, respectively. It became the 32nd best-selling album of 2003 and has sold five million copies worldwide. American Life garnered two nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004. Four singles were released from American Life. The title track was released as the lead single to a generally negative critical reception, with Blender naming it the ninth worst song of all time. It charted at number 37 in the United States, while it entered the top-ten in most markets, peaking at number two in the United Kingdom. A controversial music video was pulled after scenes of war and violence were criticized which led to an edited version being released. Its following single, "Hollywood", became her first single not to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1983. "Nothing Fails" and "Love Profusion", the third and fourth singles respectively, featured a lack of promotion resulting in poor commercial performances. Despite this, all singles peaked at number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Preceding the album release, "Die Another Day" was released as a single to promote the James Bond film of the same name, and peaked at number eight on the US Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart. Madonna promoted the album during a small promotional tour in April and May 2003. At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, she performed alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott a medley of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood", and engaged in open-mouth kissing with Aguilera and Spears gaining great controversy and publicity. American Life was supported by Madonna's sixth tour, the Re-Invention World Tour, which was the highest-grossing tour of 2004 earning $125 million. The tour was chronicled in the documentary I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, which led to Madonna's first-ever live album of the same name.
