JEELP - Like a prayerSimply her best album of all time and my absolute favorite.
Music Guy24 - Queen of PopMadonna will always be the Queen of Pop!!! Like a Prayer was a moment where she tackled the demons of her past, and had people running to the dance floor all at the same time. Not many pop artists can do both; usually, onlt one or the other.
JC Alvarez - RE-DEFINING MADONNALike A Prayer was released amid a controversial blitz – the launch of Madonna's 1989 album was mired down by angry protestors who were angered a certain All-American soft drink company had allied themselves with the fast-polarizing pop figure. Little could anyone have imagined that continuing with the firestorm that would follow her all through to the 1990's Madonna would solidify herself as the media's most talked about figure. Like A Prayer redefined the way the world would perceive of Madonna as an artist – the media would discount her talent and brand her a brilliant marketeer, but like a grand puppeteer, she never had to pull on the strings all that hard to keep our attention.
Along with the title track she would follow it up with one of her biggest hits yet, but (again) the video for "Express Yourself" would incite yet another string of protests -- this time from feminists that accused Madonna of being a "poor role model". At its purest Like A Prayer may have some of the best lyrical and musical arrangements of her career -- as an album it would go on to make the lists of the "Top 100 Pop Albums of All Time". It's impossible to disagree with tracks like the vulnerable "Oh Father" and the Prince duet "Love Song", the brilliance of this album shines through and shattered all image of the Material Girl -- she emerged from the late 80's an icon and pop music's most endurable force. Her prayers were finally answered.
MatrixVoom - Best Madonna AlbumMadonna released soundtrack tunes in the years after Like A Virgin and we thought she had disappeared from the music scene until we heard of the release of Like A Prayer. I remember rushing to the record store and buying the cassette. I remember opening the plastic wrap and this scent of patchouli rising to my nose. I put this masterpiece in my boom box and was forever a Madonna fan. This album unraveled one spin at a time and surprised me. Just when you think this album is one thing, it changes. The first time I heard this thing, I was enthralled and then rewound it and started it again. It is a masterpiece, whatever you think of Madonna.
If you resisted Madonna until 1989, no one could say she had not achieved respect as a musical artist when they heard this juggernaught. From start to finish, this is the best album Madonna ever released. It is gritty, spiritual, introspective, and cool. Even those who had passed Madonna off as a fad early on had to give her respect for this album.
This was THE coolest album of 1989. And still she upped the controversy. The amazing thing about Madonna was that she could one up herself each album. The crucifx she wore in Borderline....kid's play....she has a Linda Blair moment with the Act of Contrition. In fact, this was hands down one of her most controversial cuts. This thing is dark and sexy and haunting. Love it! Sex?....Huh! Listen to Express Yourself. Revalation...listen to her tirade on her marriage to Sean Penn in Till Death Do Us Part.
I also have to give respect to one of the best feminine empowering songs ever, Express Yourself. This is a masterpiece in music history. It is hip and funky, but what Madonna does best is weave it with a viable message. What she inspired in her early days of feminist revolution she achieved with an exclamation point in this feminist anthem. It is the best song on this album and possibly the best in her career. Every time I hear this spin, I can't help but dance.
There are also some really inspired spins that would never make radio in this album that are genius. Dear Jesse is a cotton candy infection you could imagine reading to your five year old child. And then she juxtaposes this song with Oh Father, a dark, violent rebellion take on her upbringing. The video is a masterpiece nod to Citizen Kane by the way. And we loved the Bob Fosse nod in Keeping It Together. I mean this album, the videos, everything about it was classy. This was in my opinion her highest point of artistry and we were all enthralled at the magic she unraveled for us as kids in high school. It is why we still to this day love Madonna.
Madonna literally opened her chest and let us see inside this magnificent artist. This is hands down one of the best albums of the 80's. I cannot decide between Michael Jackson's Thriller, Prince's Sign O' of the Times, or this masterpiece. If you never buy another Madonna album, you have to have to this one.
Matoor - The best...<3Madge ur the best :)
djshortstack - Great. Now, where's the original?OK, this is a great album. One of Madonna's most ambitious, in fact. She pushed herself to explore a lot of different themes and sounds, and it paid off, big time. There's a little of everything here: songs for the dancefloor, the bedroom, the nursery (I mean, she does a lullaby here, for God's sake!), and she makes it all work.
My only gripe here is that this is NOT the original version of the album. "Act of Contrition" was a wickedly funny re-examination of the title track. ("WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT IN THE COMPUTER?!")
Now, not that I mind the extended remix of "Express Yourself" or the extended mix of "Like A Prayer" (that's mislabeled "Act of Contrition"), but, at least give us the opportunity to buy the album we remember, huh?
jaopli - AmazingStill my favorite album love every song
Simplepleasures. - "I'm still hanging on but I'm doing it wrong..."Like A Prayer by Madonna is her best album to date. I love how vulnerable Madge sounds on songs like Oh Father, Spanish Eyes, Till Death Do Us Part, and Promise to Try. The title-track is gorgeous and has aged very well. Cherish and Love Song are cute and fun. Start with this album if you are a new fan of The Material Girl. Enjoy!
Ja999 - Madonna's 80's MasterpieceThis is hands down Madonna's first Masterpiece (followed by Ray of Light in the 90's). Nobody (not even the haters) can deny the power of the title track. Not only has Like a Prayer stood the test of time it is considered to be one of the greatest songs of all time. If you're not planning on purchasing the entire album be sure to buy the following:
Like a Prayer (pure masterpice, probably her greatest song)
Express Yourself (empowering and a dance classic)
Promise to Try (haunting ballad)
Oh Father (another haunting balld)
Cherish (pure 80's pop at it's finest)
I also highly recommend you check out Ray of Light which is my favorite Madonna album
T. Fuss - Very good, even 20 years laterI recently revisited this album and was pleasantly surprised by how varied the music styles were while still being uniquely Madonna. Never was a Prince fan, so I actually deleted "Love Song" but everything else is great. Its kind of funny now to look back and remember how "controversial" and "edgy" this album was at the time.
Twifan:D - LIKE A PRAYER!!!!!! :D :D :DI love like a prayer for my hot kix(kick line) dance our teacher made a remix of this song and both songs r fantastic!!!!!! btw our dance is... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
bkbpurple - Madonna's best yet!Not only is this Madonna's best album, but it's one of the best albums of all time! Madonna was already an accomplished pop sensation, but I believe her goal with this album was to prove that she was serious with her music and to be taken seriously as an artist - mission accomplished! Religion, Madonna's childhood/family, her then recent divorce, and her mother's death are all a few of the topics addressed in the album. And Madonna gives us some of her strongest vocal performances yet in songs such as, Oh Father, Promise to try, and Pray for Spanish Eyes. Also, for Prince fans, such as myself, I was excited to find out Prince was on the album. "Love Song" was a treat for me since Prince and Madonna are two of my favorite artists. So the both of them in one song was like heaven to me. Lol. Overall, 5 stars. This is a masterpiece and this album will not disappoint you. I highly reccomend this album to the people who think they don't like Madonna. Give this album a chance and TRY to say something bad about Madonna. My favorite tracks from this album are Like A prayer, Express Yourself, Love Song, Promise to try, Cherish, Oh Father and Pray for Spanish Eyes. But every track from is album is a gem. I love it!
Musicfan412 - Best of her 80's workThis could be her best album. While "Ray of Light" may be a fan favorite "Like A Prayer" is still one of her best if not her best album.

Dkboi - :)Her best old album. For the oldies this is her best. Lol. It definitely stands the test of time but I still don't think it has the magic that her album Ray Of Light does. Some of the tracks on here to me are a bit boring. However 90% of it is great. I would say this album is equal to Confessions On A Dance Floor. Ray of Light is her magical opus
jdlc9215 - One of Madonna's bestThis album is one of Madonna's best albums. There are personal tracks on the album. This is one of the most songs Madonna has written and that she really went through these things in the album. All the songs are great. A must have for a Madonna fan.
slappywag64 - A BRIEF HOPEIt was the Express Yourself that briefly turned be onto Madonna and briefly made me re-evaluated her as a performer. This album in comparison to those previous seemed (to me at least) more "mature" in style and subject matter and I hoped that it was a turning point from which she was going to evolve beyond the danceloor pop diva niche she has so comfortably made her own. Subsequent albums have proven me wrong and instead of becoming something more substantial she has remained faithful to her dancefloor origins.
vanishing... - good.the only song i really like is Like a Prayer. i'm not even a fan of madonna and i find it rather amazing. i remember hearing it on Never Been Kissed and i wondered for the longest time who was singing it and when i found out i was needless to say, surprised. it's a good song.
O(+> - I love It!I love almost every song on this album, and before I wrote this, this album had a 3 1/2 rating! I needed to do something about it.
Great album, anyway.
Astroboy6791 - Like A PrayerThis is Madonna's best album. It's definitely one of the top 100 albums of all time. It never ceases to amaze me every time I listen to it.
mjoll - Second only to Ray of LightThis is the first album that begins to capture the woman behind the image, and it really works. For those of you too young to remember this album and the spectacular heights to which Madonna had climbed in pop culture, this was a brave thing for the woman to do because, in many ways, it went against so many things the media told us she was.
The Madonna of Like a Prayer copes with her Sean Penn-era head on and comes out looking like much more than a material girl. Like a Prayer is just that - like a prayer from one of the most iconic stars of her time, or, perhaps, all time.
Don't get me wrong, I think Madonna's great when she's just having good old dance fun (I think the more recent Confessions album is GREAT), but this album is truly aural and meaningful by comparison. If you like Ray of Light, chances are very good you'll like this, too. Consider it to be Ray of Light Lite - half the calories but all the taste.
MJS1976 - THE MADONNA ALBUMSIMPLY THE BEST!!!
PhillyTeacher - Madonna's BEST album. This is, by far, Madonna's best cd. Great songwriting and a nice variety of songs.

TonyDedrick - Madonna's finest!!!!I was 6 years old when this album came out. My aunt was absolutely obsessed with Madonna. Obsessed! And while I did like some songs from Like a Prayer and Madonna as a kid, I am not sure at 6 years old you can clearly appreciate such a great artist and their great work. Now at 25, I must say that I absolutely love Madonna and appreciate this album and its songs. Its truly a great work of pop, R&B, rock and a host of other genres. Like her or not, Madonna could not be denied with Like a Prayer.
musicloversuckers1 - One of the best albums I've ever encountered"Like a Prayer" is simply flawless in every department. Great lyrics, great vocals, great beats. You can tell Madonna poured her blood, sweat, and tears. The Queen of Pop, so far, has never made a bad album, and right there, that should tell you something. "Like a Prayer" may just be one of the deepest, sincere, and greatest song I've ever heard. I find it questionable that people of this modern generation would actually prefer an amateur (Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers) over a legend. "Like a Prayer" comes off as a high recommendation and it's one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Marsan-O - +SIMPLY WONDERFUL!!!!! "MADONNA" YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!+SIMPLY WONDERFUL!!!!! "MADONNA" ,YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!
arnie125 - Like a Prayerthat song is a classic, it never gets old
crazyboy14 - madonna is the bestthis is my favorite song of her
arabamerican - Fall in love with MadonnaThis is an album that Madonna has yet to beat. This album wears its heart on its sleeve, so to speak. Well-written lyrics balance the intensity of the melodies which makes this album's appeal be universal.
(Pray for) Spanish Eyes is a Spanish influenced ballad that has so much passion and fervor in it that it would move a mountain. Even though her divorce with American actor Sean Penn had been finalized for a few years by the time the album was released, 'Till Death Do Us Part tries to cover the intensity of the relationship with a catchy beat and poetic lyrics. Promise To Try is a moving tribute of a child who lost her mother at an early age and to this day remains one of my favorite songs ever. The father figure in Oh Father song, and especially in the fantastic video, blurs the lines between a biological father, a husband, or perhaps even a religious figure. The song reflects a struggle to break out of authority while simultaneously looking for acceptance and love from that same source of authority.
Dear Jessie is a light-hearted lullaby and possibly starts a trend of songs specifically written with a child in mind (e.g. Little Star from Ray Of Light.) Keep it together is an homage to family (specifically her family) with a reminder that no matter where you go or how successful you may become that one must not "forget that [one]'s family is gold." That leaves my least favorite tracks on the album: Love Song and Act Of Contrition, both are collaborations with Prince (the former is a duet and the latter shows his awesome guitar-playing abilities.)
This list is in addition to some of the more popular songs that have helped maintain Madonna's iconic status as an American performer and pop star (Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish.)
KCNDALOU - OMGSo I was like three when this album was relased but I can remember dressing up in my moms cloths and singing my heart out into the hairbrush in the living room. I love this album I know every song by heart and to this day it still makes me want to sing into the nearest makeshift microphone I can find....its a MUST buy with songs on here like 'Pray for Spanish eyes, Cherish, Dear Jessie and Like a Prayer' to name a few!!!!! ~KC
robertalan - one of madonnas greatestThis is one of madonnas greatest efforts. "Promise to try" a song so touching considering her mother died when she was 5."Oh Father" is so haunting, actually one of my all time favorites.Dear Jesse is sorta like a nursery rhyme that she wrote for a dear friends child after she was born, long before she came to be a mother herself.I remeber the album had a sleeve that was scented with patchuli oil that to this day when I dig it out of my collection I can still smell. Brings me back to my teenage years.
Jayydna - BestThe best music available
DamHam - Like A PrayerSimply put, "Like A Prayer" is Madonna's masterpiece. A musical feast!!!
gwenfan7676 - rocksthis album rocks and it has Like A Prayer from Never Been Kissed and that is why i bought that song
PinkyD - 20 years old and still her best! This cd came out twenty years ago today (March 21 2009) and today still stands as her best record. Personal and provocative and dressed up in dance beats and pop goodness, it capped off a decade of excess that she partly could take credit for. A fantastic album from start to finish. Essential tracks are Chreish, Oh Father and the title cut.
Emalise. - Lady GaGa should get her own stuff.I didn't understand what people meant when they said Lady GaGa ripped Madonna off,
for the song "Born This Way"
And then..
I listened to "Express Yourself"
Wooooooow.
EmmandBebe - Where it beganStill relevant, fun, dance music with the occasional lyrical insight to her life. Paved the way for the current crop of ultra talented divas. Gaga, Britney, Katy are all part of her legacy for women who now dominate power pop. Each a unique tour de force. No Room
For Haters.
I luv redsox - WowCopy cat lady blabla!!!! Ughhh.
HeffNY - One of Madonna's best! - Can you say PEPSI controversy? This album remains one of Madonna's most diverse and best productions to date (thanks, in large part, to Patrick Leonard). Like RAY OF LIGHT, this album redefined who she was, where whe was coming from with total confidence that she knew where she was headed. Most people weren't crazy about Love Song (Prince collaboration) but I liked it then and like it now.
And who can forget the insanity when LIKE A PRAYER video premiered on MTV? Pepsi already had an ad capaign in progress and, upon fury from religous groups, decided to pull the campaign and the funding of Madonna's Blond Ambition tour. Hmmm.
BECAUSE I SAY SO's review below is only partially right. EXPRESS YOURSELF on this iTunes issue is the remix - the original version on the CD was only 4:37. I personally like the original. But ACT OF CONTRITION was always a tagged on "outro" to the CD. Yes, it's a LIKE A PRAYER remix (a whacked one at that) - with some Prince (uncredited at the time) guitar thrown in. But it was, indeed, on the initial release and it was included on both the ORIGINAL US/UK 7", 12" and 3" CD versions of the single - not the promo issues, however.
gmoney828 - Oh she's HOT!!!!Bring back great memories for me!!!!
HoustonSammy - Still cherish the memory of thisBack in high school, I had never smelled patchouli - I didn't know what the amazing scent of my LP was called, but I loved it almost as much as the music inside. I will say that at the time of its release, this was Madonna's best by far. Actually, it remained her best until Ray of Light. People talk about "Old Madonna" and "New Madonna." This, I lump into "Old Madonna," and I am much more a fan of Ray of Light, American Life, and Confessions. Guess I am burned out on this album, but with her body of work then being self-titled through Like a Prayer, yeah...it's phenomenal. Always thought a Madonna-Prince collaboration would have turned out much, much more interesting and exciting than Love Song was. Every other song is a masterpiece for its time - I believe that this album is nowhere near the caliber of the 3 I mentioned above - but I would be crazy not to recommend it wholeheartedly.
dude792 - Like a aaaaaaAaAAmazing! One of her greatest albums, if not the greatest. It combines some soul and jazz with a r'n'b spin in her pop style. Each song holds a story and its one tune. Starting with the classis, empowering like a prayer. Followed by the hip, anthem Express Yourself which invites the listener with clever lyrics. A few tracks later you here the cute classic Madonna tune Cherish, a love song warning 'Cherish' your love. Next is the amazing beat Dear Jessie, a sentimental tune alluded to childhood dreams with a flow of fantastic lyrics. Then the ballad Oh Father creeps in, the piano melody with her rich, bare voice singing of pain. Then the hip-hopping beat Keep it Together hops in with its catchy beats. The album closes with an Act of Contrition.
A true, amazing Madona album. A masterpiece.
The_Epicness - Like a prayer!!Like a prayer rocks!!!!!! :-)

thesumitsumbria - 5/5As said by Rolling Stone, Like a Prayer is as “close to art as pop music gets." This album is an example of how an artist observes the things around him and crafts a masterwork of art full of warmth and emotions out of them. This was the first time when a mainstream pop artist came with such a personal record. The songs “Oh Father” and “Promise to Try” have the power to make the listeners cry. The title track is unquestionably the best and the greatest song Madonna has ever released.
