I've never been too big of a fan of Gould's '81 recording: despite the fact that he preferred the '81 recording, this is the one that represents Gould to me. Unparalleled virtuosity and intensity. An interpretation from before the HIP crowd ruined interpretations for everyone. Essential!!!
I'd had his 1982 recording for many years, but hearing the original 1955 version brings it all full circle. Variations 5 and 8 in particular make my head spin. Glenn Gould was an incredible artist who will never be equaled. If you are interested in Glenn Gould, get this recording!
