- Seal Soul?

Seal is a great vocalist, but his voice is more acclimated to a Motown/R&B sound than a soul sound - match his voice with David Foster's pop-heavy arrangements and you have a beautifully produced and listenable album, but not in a traditional or typical soul fashion. If you're a Seal fan, you'll like the album. Don't let this be the first Seal album that one listens to...

- Just what I needed from Seal!

This is what I have been waiting for from Seal for a LONG time. This is so refreshing. Just what I needed from Seal. No tinny techno, e.g. System. No plunge into an abyss, e.g. Human Beings. He's not trying to recreate the electricity of the first album. Nothing feels forced. It feels right, natural. This album completely plays up to Seal's strengths, and he delivers. Nice selection of classic R&B tracks. I think it's fantastic that an authentic artist/soul like Seal has delivered such a crowd pleaser. Seal, did you happen to read my review of the System album? LOL!!!!!!

- Great Compilation Ever

I loved this album. many say it is aimed to riches pockets, but I say this album is aimed to soul as the title suggest. Soul to soul. Love all songs from this album. You better listen to it. Bee Gee

- This voice...

The whole album is so smooth. What a joy to listen to.

- Seal "Soul"

A complete treasure!!!! I purchased the video first, and it compelled me to get the album. Seal's and David Foster's arrangements, of these classic hits, are truly inspired. They turned James Brown's "It's A Man's World" into a real ballad, and Otis Redding would be impressed with their rendition of "I've Been Loving You Too Long". WHAT A GEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Love it!

First heard this new album on Oprah and loved "I Can't Stand the Rain". He takes some old classics and gives them his Seal soul. Gave it to my mother-in-law for Mother's Day and she loved it too! I highly recommend this whole album to anyone who is looking for a sure thing but a little different from everything else out there.

- got soul?

Seal's CD Soul is such a great mix of "old" songs revised. It's a cd that if you like one song, you'll like them ALL.

- Soul

Wait til you hear it live :)

- A Pleasant Surprise

Seal really shows the range of his talent.

- great cd

Not a lot of singers can cover these tunes like Seal can....this is a great CD...

- Heidi can't be happy

How is this different from the schlock that made Michael Bolton a national punchline (albeit, rich)? Good song selection, but smarmy arrangements and lazy, passionless vocals. I wanted to like it, but am disappointed. Sam Cooke is rolling over, soulfully, in his grave.

- amazing talent

i LOVE this album!!!!!!!!!!

- Great job!!!

Great songs by a great artist!!! Nothing less than 5 stars!!!

- love it

I love this.....it seems to be more true to him as an artist.... He nailed it.....his voice is like butter.....SOULFUL!!!!

- Awesome

I've known about Seal and heard his work but never really listened closely. Now I will have to revisit that stance. I am glad he's come up with a homage to the greats from the past and I have to say he's done an excellent job at it. I've always knew he had a good voice and this cd proves his versatility. I recommend this to anyone and will listen to the songs for many hours. Thank you Seal for a trip back Memory Lane.

- seal is amazing

seal is so amazing. thos album is a must if u like soul music!

- AWESOME!!!!!

This is my first time purchasing music by Seal. I truly loved this CD. He has a very unique voice that is AWESOME!!!!

- Brad H

A MUST OWN

- soulful seal

i heard this album in barnes and nobles and had to rush home and purchase it. love it!!

- Love it!

I loved it - and the price is right!

- Gotta Have It!

A stellar artist + one of a kind standards= mesmerizing album. I don't understand why one would be bothered by a remake of great songs! I love it! My favorites are "Free" and "I'm Still in Love With You". Sing it to me Seal!!

- Unbelievable!!!!

This is quite simply THE best cd of covers I have ever heard. I felt like Seal was channeling all the great singers (his Sam Cook and Otis Redding covers gave me chills) he pays homage to on this cd. The production value and arrangements are absolutely top notch. Don't listen to a bad word about this cd. It's an instant classic.

- A True Soul Man

For those that grew up with REAl soulmen like Otis redding and Sam Cooke, Seal does them all proud. I always knew that Seal is a talent that due tot he pop radio culture in our country, will never get his full due of respect as a singer and artist, but that did not stop him from stepping outside his 'box' and hit a home run with remaking these classics and making them his own. I know Curtis Mayfield was giving a Bravo on People Get Ready. Excellent job. Excellent Album!

- Cool Family Runnings

Great family album for mother's who haven't lost their soul but can't stand all the "frigging" and "jigging" in today's top 40. I love to share my iTunes sounds with my kids, but even the popular music is not always appropriate. I love the fact that I can put this album on everyone's iPods and let the music flow. The girls and I love singing the old standards. Nice change for Seal. I bet he sings these with his kids, too. Those memories -- singing in the kitchen or the car with your kids -- are priceless. But even if you're not a mummy, the album is easy on the ears, the mind and the soul.

- ehh

its okay..i mean seal has a good voice. but why not buy the originals of your favorite 8 songs on the album and save yourself $2.08? spend that on more sam cooke songs

- Seal provides seldom-found singing ability, music capability

Seal provides a package that is hard to come by these days. In an age where machines sing to our ears more than a human's vocal chords, it's easy to lose sight of what music really is about. It's not about "sessions" of instruments as much as solos of singers, at least in cases where these music sessions are not by a solo instrument (generally just a lot of pop, like Citizen Cope). Although I appreciate both to an appropriate degree, I find singers like Seal providing the music landscape with so much vigor and beauty that if you find these singers, you can get a musical experience that corresponds to what you could have found in other times, when music was of higher quality, like the crooner or synth pop or grunge, etc., eras. Beyond that, Seal is also a good model. Most of today's singing celebrities are considerably unfavorable "role models" for people listening to them (bling-bling rappers, slutty women), and let's face it - everyone looks for inspiration from their music, and therefore, that inspiration also naturally arises from the singers themselves. Seeing that musicians have a special personal responsibility for their music, since their work can affect people so much (especially when their lyrics can match a random person's life troubles), it's important that such great artists like Seal have that accountability. Doubtlessly, Seal comes out to be a responsible family man, an introspective thinker, and a man with good character. That's all I ask for from a person I draw inspiration from, and I'm glad I found Seal in this endless sea of "musicians" or "singers" that lacks the above credentials.

- SilkySOUL

Phenomenal body of work! Seal absolutely owns every song and his arrangements are amazing. While he doesn't stray too far away from the original sound, he doesn't go overboard trying to mimic the original pieces. He nicely incorporates his own flavor. I can recall enjoying music by the original artists when my parents played vinyl on the component system, but through this project, I'm able to appreciate THEIR old school favorites even more. Definitely add SOUL to your collection.

- Lame rehash sellout

I've been a fan of seal since his first album, and this is by far the worst--and its not even his material. Disappointed.

- Masterful

Seal has stepped outside of his comfort zone and I love him for it. He has put his "seal" on these remakes and made them his own. This is a sign of a true artist. welcome back Seal. I missed you,

- Soul-LESS

No urgency, no emotion, no real artistic connection to any of the songs. Sure, he can hit the notes -- but can he feel them? 'A Change is Gonna Come' is a song about the dream of progress and social revolution, and he sings it like he's in a Vegas lounge. 'People Get Ready' is a Biblical metaphor for salvation and justice -- where's the passion that's needed to bring it to life? If you want Soul, check out Eva Cassidy...Leela James...Solomon Burke...The Band...Otis Redding...hell, even Wayne Brady's got more than Seal! A watered-down shame of an album.

- Seal

What a great sealection of some of the best songs ever made.

- Seal and Soul - Perfect!

This album is awesome! I knew a little about Seal and his music but when I heard this, I was blown away. His selection of songs for his voice was dead on. I loved the whole album and after listening to it, I went and saw him on tour and the show was as great as this album. I am really hoping that he will release another with songs from the past. It was just the best!

- Soul

I love the music. However, I can not burn the CD and I am unable to put the music onto my MP player. So what good was it to purchase the Music.

- boring poop

wanted to like it, but it's poop

- Seal is awesome

This cd is AWSOME!!!!! Best cd he made.

- Gentlemen, start their engines!

This music is for grownups. Fans of The Fray need not apply. If you're of a certain age, you already know these songs backwards, and can appreciate a loving tribute to some of the best soul masterpieces from the sixties. And my God, what a voice! Guys, if you can't close the deal with this music playing in the background, you might as well enter a monastery.

- THIS ALBUM IS PERFECT

A must have. Don't think about it, don't read any more reviews, just buy it. If you like Seal's voice, and if you're even a moderate fan of 60's R&B/Soul, you must add this to your collection. Each track is perfect, the arrangements are perfect, the vocals are perfect, the interpretations are perfect. Listening to it track by track is like unwrapping another gift. And each track is a gift from writers, arrangers, producers and, of course, SEAL. I can't think of any way anyone could improve on this effort.

- woooow!

what a performance by seal after hearing the whole cd he did a fantastic job!! nothing wrong paying tributes to the ones who paved the way for this voice of the future of r&b music we may lost the KING OF POP but the prince of soul is seal!!!

- Near Perfect Soul Album

Seal hits the mark on this album. I was nervous when first saw the track list full of songs I assumed could never be redone. Songs like, "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "It's A Man's Man's Man's World". Seal proved me wrong. By capturing the feel of the original songs and adding just a pinch of modernization, Seal revitalizes some old soul for a new generation.

- Not a match

While Seal is a very soulful singer, I do not consider him a soul singer. He's an edgier, rock-tinged gravelly voiced singer trying to cover R&B, and I just don't think it works. It lacks the passion that usually infuses his works, even last year's "System." That being said, the songs are not all from the 60's. "I Can't Stand The Rain," was originally recorded by Ann Peebles in '73 (also covered by Brainstorm and later, Tina Turner, among others). "Free," originally by Deniece Williams, was also recorded in the 70's. The original "Knock On Wood" was recorded in the '66 by Eddie Floyd, and Seal's arrangement is similar to it. Amii Stewart's discofied cover is from the 70's.

- A different Seal

If you like his old stuff this is a complete change but a great one. Listen with an open mind and heart it is well worth it.

- Al Green by Seal

I love Seal's version of Let's Stay Together, it is well done and creates a deeper groove.

- Most from the 70's not the 60's

To those so "not in the know" most, if not all of these songs are from the 70's - the most soulful decade for R&B music and Seal does great justice to these classics

- Doesn't get old

I bought this 2 years ago and still am listening to this. He re-did these songs so well.. Def worth buying the whole album. On hooked now abs will buy anything he makes

- A Wonderful Surprise

A great compilation of songs which sound like they were made just for him and do the music great justice. It made me feel very Marvin like.

- Amazing - Absolutely Amazing

I've always been a big fan of Seal, but this compilation has to rank among his best work!

- D.J.ACE

THANK YOU SEAL FOR THIS GREAT ALBUM,WE LOVE WHAT YOU DO MAN.EVERY SONG IS ON POINT.

- Seal

Love his music and was glad I could purchase his album on I Tunes. Thanks

- Soul

The arrangements are wonderful and Seal's voice compliments the music. Great CD to listen to with your special someone and a glass of wine.

- Just Not Feeling It

Seal has one of the most recognizable voices in music & I generally like his style, but "Soul" does nothing for me. The only songs that stood out were "It's Alright" & "I'm Still In Love With You," other than that, the rest of the lineup seemed a total mixmatch for Seal's voice. These songs are amazing classics & there's no reason to re-sing/update them. Leave the classics alone!

Soul Wiki

In many religious and philosophical traditions, the soul is the non-material essence of a person, which includes one's identity, personality, and memories, an immaterial aspect or essence of a living being that is believed to be able to survive physical death. The concept of the soul is generally applied to humans, although it can also be applied to other living or even non-living entities, as in animism.
