The Black Keys - Turn Blue

About Turn Blue by The Black Keys Album

Turn Blue is the eighth studio album by American rock duo The Black Keys. It was co-produced by Danger Mouse and the band, and was released on Nonesuch Records on May 13, 2014. The album was primarily recorded during the summer 2013 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California, with additional recording at Key Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan and guitarist Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, in early 2014. The band announced the album via a tweet by retired boxer Mike Tyson and a series of cryptic YouTube videos featuring a hypnotist played by actor Micah Fitzgerald. The song "Fever" was released as the lead single on March 24, 2014, along with the album's cover art and track listing.

- It’s good

Re- reviewing this album, I like it but wish they’d get back to the underground founding blues rock. Kinda feel like they’re selling out.

- Did the Black Keys sell out?

Danger Mouse destroyed the Black Keys. I can not believe album is real. Even for pop music this bad. Someone please bring back the Black Keys from prior to the release of this album. Wow!

- Great sound

Awesome

- Stellar!

Love the 70's classic rock vibe, guitar work and melodies. It's different than what you would expect from the Black Keys, but sometimes different is better and this new direction is no exception.

- Every band has this phase

I'm this album the black keys are trying to find their sound, and it isn't this

- Awesome

This is melancholy music to listen to when you're high

- Oof

Perff

- This album is sexy

The sound and feel of this album is just plan sexy. Once again good job my fellow Ohioans😊. I'm proud to know your from the Buckeye state👍 O-H-I-O

- Move on

I understand this album is different from the Black Keys older sound, and I know not everyone likes the change, but there's no need to be a jerk about it. Even if you don't like the change in musical direction, I think this comment section can agree that this music is still way better than most Top 40 songs... so give some credit to TBK for keeping musical integrity. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you should force your opinion on others.

- I refuse to buy a single song from this album...

When I get home from getting paid I instantly go onto iTunes to buy a black keys song or two... except when this album came out I did not buy a single song. Why? Because I originally LOVED TBKs for not being mainstream crap.... looks like they are on that path now... What happened to the old stuff? Attack and Release? El Camino? Brothers?!!!!

- DONT GET ME WRONG

It's a good album but it has too many electronic sounds and not enough good 'old rock like they used to

- Weight of Love

Why are there no reviews mainly about this song?? I love "Weight of Love" so much. I also like "Fever" but I don't think that it's as good as "Weight of Love". Just me? This album is amazing though. 5 stars ^ < > ^

- Turn Blue

I was just showing my teen aged daughter how this album sounds like ELO from the 80's when they just wouldn't let Disco die. Don't believe me? Listen real close to Gotta Get Away.

- Wasn't sure, but it grew on me

At first, I thought What the.... But now I love it and find myself singing every song in my head. Love the old stuff, but this is pretty impressive too. "Gotta get away" is one of my favorite songs, but oddly enough, it feels out of place on this album.

- Turn What?

Studio wizard Danger Mouse? Hardly. I understand bands evolve and you’re not always going to like all the new stuff but memo to the band: don’t forget what got you there in the first place. Not a hater but it's time to find a new studio wizard. Get back to your roots boys.

- It's not bad....

....But not great either. To me it sounds like elevator music. Between the 4th an 10th listening of the entire album my review is a solid Four of Five stars.

- Black keys did it again

This album is amazing, not your magic potion or thickfreakness, but good nevertheless. loved bullet in the brain, weight of love, and turn blue in particular. this may sound weird but their music always makes you feel something, which is good.. I guess it triggers certain memories for me. idk. great album

- Astonishing !

Although many see change in them, its a album i can relate to & absolutely love it. The Soul Rock Alternative tracks are simply amazing. thank you Black Keys! for a phenomenal album

- LOVE

my favOrite album from them. Listen to weight of love

- Nice

Really love this album

- Oy Vey

The Keys' funky phase is a bit confusing because it's not bad, and yet it's not that great either. 'Weight of Love' is their best song on the album, but I'm not about to ridicule them for that considering the lack of talent floating around the pop scene anyway. This is an obvious post from anyone a fan of The Black Keys, I realize. All I can hope is for this duo to never get this lazy again.

- Turn Blue

Great album but different from the rest of the Black Keys' albums. More psychedelic than blues but if you appreciate all types of rock, you'll enjoy this!

- Nooooo !

The black keys keep getting further and further away from the roots,, very disappointed with this release, I try to except it for what it is but still do not like it at all.. please bring back the distorted greediness with great guitar riffs...Rubber Factory is still very best hands-down....so disappointed in this..

- The Black Keys just keep getting better

Older fans may complain about Turn Blue, but from a newer fan like myself, I love the album. The group's style has changed, but the changes have been for the better like a clearer and cleaner sound.

- I want thre old Black Keys Back!

Ug. I just can;t enjoy this album, It is so mellow and boring. I miss the old school hard rock/blues sound but it seems like this band has sold out to mainstream sound. Hopefully their next album will return a bit to their old school blues roots but I doubt it eventually these guys will sound like every indie pop band out there.

- Last time I preorder a Black Keys album.

This is the last time i pre-order a Black Keys album. It used to be just automatic that I'd preorder, but Turn Blue has taught me that they are no longer a sure thing. Too bad i can't sell these songs back. This is the beginning of the end for the Black Keys. They are clearly no longer "in (their) prime" like their song title. There's been a steady de-evolution since Brothers. This album is basically just the weakest parts of El Camino and amplified. And the very worst track on Brothers is still slightly better than the best track on Turn Blue. This band peaked with albums like Magic Potion and Thickfreakness. If you want to see classic Black Keys nowadays you need to check out Black Pistol Fire and Royal Blood. Though they wouldn't have existed without the groundwork that the Keys laid, they have not sold out or gotten pretentious....yet. Enjoy them now before they make enough money and get too high of an opinion of themselves. I don't see that happening with Pistol, but I definitely see Royal Blood selling out like the Keys. They've gone soft and full of themselves. It's like the Black Keys on Valium. They sound like they're trying to win a Grammy. Where's that hungry and grimy garage blues band? They are moving away from what I like to hear at an alarming rate. It's overdressed and awful with palpably less soul and integrity. You're a two man band for Pete's sake, why is there so much extra noise?? You were FAR better when all you could hear was vocals, drums and one of the best guitars ever. Obviously Danger Mouse gets a big share of the blame for killing this band on this album. He obscured all that makes them great with layers and layers of the two most evil words in music today: "Sonic Landscapes." There's every kind of needless and fake noise you can throw at a band. The only noise you don't hear, in fact, is the sound of the band and the producer being crushed by their huge egos. If I wanted to hear Broken Bells, I'd listen to Broken Bells. Thanks to Danger Mouse and the direction Auerbach is heading, this album is more R&B and electronic that happens to also have guitars and drums than rock. They used to be just two crazy talented musicians, but now they need tech support to perform in addition to roadies. There's practically no swampy feel whatsoever which really makes me sad. They were the ones that got me in to swampy blues and now they've abandoned it. A fact that certainly made me "turn blue" in my soul. You can blame age for some of this change and you can blame Danger Mouse for another portion, but really it's all about them just trying to make even more money at this point. Not music. You could argue that Brothers and El Camino were just band growth and change, but isn't it ironic that this dramatic change followed their biggest commerical success??? They are clearly pandering to the largest groups of album buyers out there. And they don't tend to be the deepest and most intelligent people. Music for the masses is always the most profitible. They got a taste of big $ and they chose that over the music. Though Dan can still play the heck out of a guitar, this is by far my least favorite Keys album if you haven't already guessed. This album has dramatically weaker stats than every other album in their catalog. The average song on this album is 3 stars while every other Keys album has 4-5 star average songs. What's even worse, this is the FIRST time i've had throwaways on a Black Keys album. I'm still in shock almost 2 years later over this fact. :( There's just five 3 star songs and the rest are throwaways. All of the tracks that I kept are coincidentally also the five most popular tracks. You can tell that the people know what they want from this band. But Dan and Patrick are chosing to follow Danger Mouse (stupid name) all the way to the bank.

- Every Band Needs Change

For those that are saying that this isn’t their old stuff and that they changed, you’re totally right. Every band goes through change. If they keep giving you the same exact sound over and over again, what good is that? This album sounds incredible to me. I believe it’s an amazing work of art with mellow sounds. And you even get some of their louder stuff too. I love it!

- Good Album

Not my favorite album they've done but I still love it.

- Turn blue

Fever and 10 lovers are the best 💘💙

- sigh.

I was just listening to attack and release and thought, "Hmmmm. I could use some new Black Keys." Then I sampled this recording and El Camino and got depressed. Who took their balls away?? I could blame Dangermouse but these guys are grown assed artists in charge of their own destiny. And apperently they choose to make muzak for the Apple Generation. It's catchy. Just weakweakweak. Can't you f%&#ers be multi-dimensionaly creative and still keep things hairy? I think you can. You just aren't. I wont buy this. I'll be checking out something earlier and giving Attack And Release another spin instead.

- New Stuff, happy me

They're old stuff was amazing, and I can't believe people are complaining about this album, it's amazing as well! Just cause the Black Keys are trying something new, doesn't mean it's bad. If you can't accept change, then don't listen to this album, otherwise, keep doing you!

- Give it time, it's excellent

This album is sensational but also requires a few listens to understand the depth of it. The people who haven't liked it want instant gratification where this albums strength is the collective whole. In Time, Fever, and Gotta Get Away are the highlights

- In our prime

My tears can’t even this mood and the memories "A Tale Of Two Stories; The Modern Day Draft"

- Weight of love

Don’t be musically slutty.

- Strayed too far

I LOVE all their old music. This album is just okay, though. It lacks the personality and genuine feel of their previous work.

- Amazing

While Turn Blue is different than any other Black Keys album, it’s unique feel is what makes it great!

- Buy this album!!!

Great songs. Lots of awesome riffs. Play the whole album (especially while driving) 👍😜

- The Pinnacle

.....this album is IT! incredible soulful blues, outstanding vocals, just one word to describe this whole collection....incredible! Even through in a little "70"s style organ. Should have won the Grammy for best album, although Beck was top notch too! Glad they have come out of the Garage! Not sure how they can top perfection, guess we'll wait and see!

- go back to garage w/o danger mouse

it reminds me of watching Wilco turn into daddy rock, i like listening to music that makes me forget about changing diapers. black keys still awesome

- Late review

This is definitely a change but they still managed to explode my mind. I thought Brothers was the best but this is the best! Lol... Except for that Kalamazoo song...

- Another great album from TBK

It's better than El Camino but not as good as Brothers which is my favorite TBK album. I highly recommend Weight of Love, Year in Review, In Our Prime and Gotta Get Away. Weight of Love is one of the greatest TBK songs and if the rest of the album was like this, Turn Blue would easily be their best album. I'm not saying I hate Turn Blue but Weight of Love is godly compared to the other songs. My least favorite songs were Bullet in the Brain and It's Up to You Now; they feel lackluster and don't have the same energy as Fever (yes I actually like Fever) and Gotta Get Away in my opinion.

- It saddens me to listen to this

Just stay away from this album. They should have stayed in the garage and played their filthy garage blues and not become a synth pop band. I think I understand what they were trying to do here, experiment with new sounds but they forgot to include their garage blues in the mix. They were on a path and decided "hey lets blaze a new musical trail." Now they are so far down this path I don't know if they can make it back to where they were before. They are so close to being irrelevant and I think that's the saddest part of all

- 10/10

You grow to love and adore this album. The more you listen, the more significant the lyrics feel through you're emotions. Great Job Dan and Pat.☺️

- Gejdjj

I love this band my favorite song is "year in review"

- No More "Danger Mouse"

Why does ‘Danger Mouse” have to ruin every good band left in the world? His cheesy synthed out over production makes me throw up a little everytime i hear anything he has produced. I am happy for the Keys success, but please Danger Mouse stop ruining good bands.

- Sad

I miss the pure, raw, unadulterated Black Keys sound. What ever happened to the days when it was just Dan and Patrick jamming out on the guitar and drums with insane bluesy riffs and soulful lyrics not worried about filling stadiums and making sure their albums went platinum. I understand that they are trying to make money, but they are a shell of their former selves and it is so incredibly sad. Really hoping now that they are rich and famous, they decide to take it back to “Rubber Factory,” “Thickfreakness,” and “Magic Potion.” They might as well be called “The Band Formerly Known as The Black Keys."

- Different...

But, some amazing music nonetheless!! Some great guitar solos and bass!! Weight of Love might be one of the best guitar solos of the 21st century.

- Yuck

This album is awful. What happened to the two blue collar boys from Akron that wrote "Thickfreakness" and made a Junior Kimbrough tribute album? I really thought these boys were saving rock and roll. Time to throw them to the hipsters.

- The black Keys

For every negative review I read....come on really? Call if you see the black keys?....I don't like the direction there going?... I have to say for me it's like reviewing the Beatles based solely on their old albums."Oh God, I hate Sgt. Pepper and the White Album it sounds nothing like Meet the Beatles...." This could possibly be one of the best albums I heard all of 2010 era. They perfectly placed their old blues with a seventies type feel for a strange album that sounds nothing like today's rock standards. I welcome the change and say bring on the next White Album.

- Vibes

I love this I can work for 8 hours and it feels like 10 mins when I listen to this song

- The Best!

It's their best album. The sounds are cool, and they did the best on the guitar and effects. It's all kinda a different assortment, and, (for me), the best songs were weight of love and 10 lovers. It is such a good album.

- Sold Out

Sorry with each release after Brothers they have got more and more commercial to the point now where it is just commercial JUNK!!!

- Absolutely mind-blowing

Every beat of every song is pure glory

- a wonderful listen

A song for every mood, each one taking you away from the world for a few minutes.

- fantastic

such an amazing album. they've taken their music into an awesome psychedelic twist, still with that great blues sound. I think it's fantastic !

- Loving It!

This album is great. Compared to El Camino and Brothers it is mediocre but taking it for what it is… Its awesome!

- Turn Blue

I love this and would recommend buying it. Some of it reminds of Pink Floyd and some Arcade Fire and someone else I can't pinpoint.....but I love sound! Good listening!

- Not too bad

I still love the older stuff. Magic Potion with the big bad guitar throughout. This one is certainly different, but after a few listens is not so bad after all. Not a huge fan of the slower songs, but there is still some pretty nasty (as in good nasty!) guitar hidden throughout this album. Change is not always bad, still would love to hear more of the older style though.

- Retro Modern 70's Vibe

People are saying this album has no direction but it does...the modern retro 70's vibe, I hear it in every song on the album, guess you have to be from that era to get it. love it

- awesome

weight of love c'est la meilleure de l'album

- Crystal Clear

I love the emotion behind all the words, and the production quality is stunning

- Meh...

This record lacks an edge that is noticeable in past BK records…not sure if it is the songs content that is making it feel this way, but that is my impression. Better luck net time boys…wish I didn’t purchase this one.

- Oh Well

I became a fan of the Black keys because of the albums Brothers and El Camino. There is very little other stuff I like from them and this album returns to the roots I don't like. I can appreciate everyone likes their own sound and obviously a lot of people like this new sound but for me i can't find a place for it. Judging by the album cover maybe I have to be under the influence of something to unlock their new sound??

- buy this

Such a good album. Love this band and their sound. Definitely recommend, don’t hesitate!

- The Black Keys Best

Forget all the "keepers of the vaults." This album moves and will move you...love the funkier sound!

- Could have done better

I am fairly disappointed with the new album… I had greater expectations from Dan and Patrick seeing that it was a year longer than expected. I wish they had kept to the basics with the bluesier rock and not gone into the modern stuff with weird effects and sounds.

- Perfect

Love

- I love the black keys

I can't think of any other band than can be better then the black keys. I love their music. This album is great. Favourite song "in time"

- Pretty solid

Weight of love is the best track by far, the rest is good. Easy and pleasant listening, but not a game-changer album

- Not bad

A few good songs... Kinda slow for the most part

- The Album Grows on You

At first i was very upset and did not like the album, i love the blues and i wanted that rough and gritty black keys sound from the early days! I was expecting this to be the album where they sink right back down into the dirt and give that sound i wanted. However, listening to the album i began to appreciate how good it really was and although it was not what i wanted, i can only tip my hat to the band for exploring a new ( and very awesome) new sound while maintaining their identity.

- Great!

I just bought this album on vinyl today. I love the new kinda sound they're going for. It's very cool!!! Plus vinyl is very cool!

- Not impressed

These keys are in need of sharpening, because they've lost their edge. No blues feel. Hell, no 'psychedelic' feel for that matter. Too much production. Not enough of what worked so well before they met Danger Mouse.

- Love pretty much every song

I love how it almost seems like these guys sat down and said "you know what, there aren't enough guitar solos out there anymore". Some of the guitar in this album is fantastic. Especially in "Weight of love" and "in our prime", where the guitar solos practically send me into a trance...

- A new identity

Turn Blue is an album of the ages, and proves that The Black Keys have the staying power that was yet to be shown by the garage rockers. The Black Keys showed with this album that infusing a bit of synths into garage rock actually works, and even more, it sounds amazing. Although you may not hear this album as much as the others at sports stadiums, this album is better because of it, because it shows a different emotion not yet shown by the black keys, vulnerability. Yet, they still are able to put a few anthems into this album, and fever is another hit that will not soon be forgotten. Many bands have unsuccessful identity changes, and I'm very proud to say that the black keys aren't one of them

- Awsome just trippy good

Quit ur whineing all u critics music is art there is no formula! Great variety great traks! Awsome band. U hear some of those guitar solos and vocalz..!

- Alright

A farcry from their older work. You could definitely see this coming after they released El Camino. It's fine they the don't make good bluesy rock anymore but that doesn't mean that their new sound can't sound great. Unfortunately it misses on a majority of the tracks which is a real shame. Danger Mouse had his dirty fingers all over this one

- pas si mal

Enfin! la basse prend de l'importance. On perd un peu de l'essence originelle du groupe. Mais c'est un très bon album!

- The New Black Keys

If you are a fan of the Black Key's old stuff, you won't like this album very much. It's a totally different sound from what they used to put out. Not much guitar on this album at all except for the first song. Surprising since all they ever used to be was two dudes with a guitar and a drum kit. If you have a broad taste in music and can appreciate a good song for what it is, you'll enjoy this album a lot . Just warning you in advance, don't expect anything like their first handful of albums. (side note: Fever's a toe tapper)

- What is going on !?

Don't get me wrong, Dan and Pat have immense talent. I've been listening to them long before they were a commercial success but I thought I was listening to a Duran Duran album from the 80's or 90's . I know you have to evolve and grow but enough with the synth. Did Dan break his guitar ? Guess I'll have to wait for their next offering.

- Neil Young Tribute Album?

First Track, Weight of Love = Neil Young's Down By The River. Borrowing? Tribute? Stealing? You decide.

- Oh love this!

I pre-ordered this and have been listening to it since it came in...I did't think I'd be getting El Camino which I love, this is slightly different but no less terriific...Hope "10 Lovers" is the next single, I used to do this for a living when I worked for a record company...and I'd pick that one...:)

- Meh.

It's alright, the whole "blues rock with an unusual organ sound" can only work for so long though.

- The Black Keys Turn Blue

This album is unlike any other Black Keys album, but that doesn't mean it's anything less than spectacular. It's sound is different than any of their other albums, some have called it 'poppy' with no soul, others call it psychedelia, and Pink Floyd-like. Whatever you call it, I love it. The beginning track "Weight of Love" is arguably my favorite, and critics favorite too, but not because the others slack. This album is amazing in it's entirety or any single track. And frankly here, one of the best albums I've listened to in quite some time. It's hard to judge how you'll feel about the album from a review, some call it poppy & produced, some say psychedelia sounding with no blues, make a decision for yourself and can say if you liked any other album from The Black Keys, you won't be disappointed. Epically strong, relatable lyrics backed with great music, it's hard to beat. The two singles released are not my favorite songs on the album, 'Weight of Love', 'Waiting On Words', 'In Our Prime' and 'It's Up To You Now' are my favorite of the album, but decide for yourself as I've said, it's really up to you now. This may lose them some of the fans who are jumping to the newest sound, but won't disappoint a true fan of music, original as always, The Black Keys do it again. Can't recommend it enough.

- Amazing Album

i love this new sound so much.

- New different sound!

This new album sounds pretty different from what else I've heard, reminded me of pink Floyd a bit.

- There is hope!

As I write this, "Turn Blue" is the number one album on i-Tunes, beating out the latest cash-in resurrection of Michael Jackson's corpse. Looks as though The Black Keys really will save modern music after all ...

- No

The music in this album is complety different from The Black Keys original sound. It is much more poppy and has barely any "modern day blues" in it. Their are a couple guitar solos here and there but to be honest the music is boring. I will say the artwork of the album is cool but that can't change the sound of it. A lot of the songs are slow and don't have a lot of energy in them. If you are a die hard Black Keys fan I would say get it, but if you aren't skip it. Too bad because in my opinion they are a great band. I think this is their first bad album.

- Anazing

This whole album is awesome! They get better with every new album!

- Not what I expected

I'm pretty disappointed in this one. I've always loved the old school sound that they started with as well as the new sound adopted. But it seems they have gone in a different direction here. No catchy upbeat lively hits. So sad....although it probably won't stop me from catching a live tour date.

- Really enjoys it

It's getting better and better, amazing!

- Underwhelming

I have nothing against bands seeking to continually evolve but I hope this sound is nothing more than a phase from one of the few bands I have every album of. There is too much electronic noise covering up the talent of Dan and Patrick. Looking forward to the next album!

- An Album with an Identity Crisis

Before I get into this, I wan't to make clear I like this album, and more importantly, I love this band I don't think they have made a single bad album and I don't think this album is their first. However, this album is nowhere near perfect. The fact of the matter is, this is an album that has no clue what it wants to be. Sometimes it's pshychedelic, sometimes it's synth-rock, and sometimes it's a weird mish-mash of the two with some old blues-rock flourishes. This makes the album overall very inconsistant, and the songs are no different. Without a clear cohesive sound, everything just falls apart at places. However, when the album does stick to one thing it does a fantastic job of it, and those moments alone are worth the price of purchase. That said, this is possibly the worst album the black keys have ever done, and if you are not a fan of their new direction DO NOT buy this album.

- Good Album

It's a good album and I will buy it. I'm not at all mad at them changing their sound from the Big Come Up days. That's natural, and what good artists do. There are a few tracks here I didn't like though. The last track IMO is especially lame. Fever was also OK IMO. There are some great tracks though too. I'd give it a 8/10 whereas the other Keys albums would be 9s and 10 IMOs.

- Atmospheric

Listened to the album last night... Blew me away...In my opinion it's there best album since brothers. Tks BK

- Love it!

This album is great so far. It is definitely a different sound then what I was expecting. It was a pleasant surprise! Hats off to Dan and Patrick for this one!

- Not what i was expecting

After those first two singles i was expecting something more like el camino...and i'm so glad it's something much, much better. The fusion of classic psychedelic and modern blues rock is hypnotising.

- Flexing their muscles

Dan is showing off the “gold chains” of guitar riffing on that first track! amazing 2 see how far they’ve come. Great album, more bluesy but delivers as always

- A great addition

Once again the Keys have expanded their range with a bunch of really catchy tunes. What a great idea to stream the whole album on iTunes. Have listened to it 3 or 4 times already and can't wait to purchase it (on vinyl).

- Totally worth it

Give it some time, it will get to ya !

- Awesome

Definitely a slow burn. I love how this album grows on you. This is Black Keys in top form. Well recommended!!

- Sour

It's like I'm listening to a warhead if that warhead could like symphonise

- yes.

this is the reason the word 'amazeballs' was allowed in the oxford dictionary

- AWESOME!

LOOOOVE IT! great funky tunes dudes. Another wicked album. Thank you

- waiting

I hope the rest of the songs do not sound like this one 'fever', If they do it will be the first Black Keys album I will not buy. I have liked the progression in their music so far but ..............

- Done it again....

Far out The Black Keys just keep smashing it! While some of my other favourite bands have gotten decidely more commercial and thus hyped up, that leads to inflated new sounds which have proven to be fatally flawed, The Black Keys continue to stay true to their roots while incoproating new sounds without straying too far from what they do best. Agreed that this is harking back to the Brothers album influence more, rather than going with the hugely successful El Camino route of inspiration (which I enjoyed more than Brothers), I thoroughly enjoy how they can still keep us guessing 8 albums in. Fantastic work, can't wait for them to tour again, I'll be listening to this back to front until then....

- Best band ever!

Turn Blue, the next step for The Black Keys. They are the best indie/garage rock band there is out there! Best songs I've heard, and I know there's plenty more to come. Best album I've heard in a while! If you're in a budget, I recommend you buy Gotta Get Away! Well done The Black Keys!

- its OK

i still don’t like the black keys but this is their best work so far in my opinion

- The Black Keys

Really enjoying 'Fever' great song!!

- Let’s wait and see first.

It’s much too unfair to rate an unreleased album on one song and as much as “Daisybuckets” means well, I must disagree with Daisybucket’s “prediction”(?) of what this album might offer. First off, back to my first point, one song is ONE song so let’s not get too excited or too down about the whole album yet! However, I must say after the direction the Keys took from what I believe to be at “Brothers”, I was expecting something “different” and “new”, as different and new The Black Keys could get. “Fever” is much of the same fare as El Camino, not as rambunctious I grant you but the same simplicity and easy vibe. The dance-beat drumming, the hook-filled vocals and the instrumental riff to round off the one-two punch and you’re down. It ain’t a bad song but after El Camino, I’ve personally have had enough. I do hope that the other songs are something different. I trust in thee, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney.

- YES!

if theres anything to take away from the release of their first single, this album will sound different to El -Camino in a sense that it will incorporate alternative elements that can be seen in Brothers. If you are a fan of one but not the other or a fan of both i am sure that one would definitely enjoy another masterpiece from on;y of the best evolving bands in the past 20 years

- It’s not that solid… really is a bit ‘meh..’

I hope ‘Turn Blue’ doesn’t become the played song of the album, it’s SO BLAND AND ANNOYING. 'It’s Up To You Now’ is the only song I’d recommend buying. It’s time we all put Rubber Factory on, crank it, and remember the good old days…

- This and elushis

This and bands like Elushis are the real music! No Miley Cyrus or Disney here ;)

- They did it again!

Weight of Love is an amazing song

- Hmmm Its not El Camino

I've loved the Black Keys ever since I accidentally downloaded one of their songs looking for a song by the Broken Keys. Every Album I've listened to from that time I instantly fell in love with 4-5 songs on the first listen. I can't say the same on this Album. Fever is catchy, and if you can last the whole 7 mins plus for Weight of Love it's definitely got something. The rest of the Album blahhh, I'm sure as some of the other people have pointed out that after multiple listens I'll come round, but jeez, I like your old stuff better than your new stuff :-)

- A bit let down...

Please go back to attack and release style music. You guys are one of the only modern rock bands so please stay that way

- Loving the First-play

Been listening to the album through iTunes Radio, and can’t wait to own it so I can listen to it more often. These two guys have provided a more laid back bluesy feel to their new release vs El Camino. I think it will continue to grow with each listen.

- Awful

Terrible record, nothing like their first album. Dont bother.

- Sad

I'm sorry but I just can't force myself to buy this album. I love the black keys and I really enjoy their sound, I have every other black keys album even one of dans self titled albums but this album kinda missed the mark for me. The old stuff was great but this 'sigh'. I look forward to their next album but if it keeps going this way you will have lost me, and most likely a few other fans just by looking in the comments. Best of luck Black keys and I hope you make the right decision what ever that is. *sad smile*

- The Black Keys have done it once again!

Loving the psychedelic style!

- Not as good as I thought

It's not what I expected that's for sure. I went to their Australian tour and flew half way across the country to go and was amazed at their talent. At first listen to the demos I'm not running out to buy their cd.

- disappointing

So disappointing another one of my favourite bands gone commercial & electronic, wheres the insanely good drums beats and in your face fuzzed riffs???. first one of theirs I’m not buying instead going to go listen to rubber factory/thickfreakness & pretend this never happened.

- Great Change!!!

This is a great change for the band. As you can tell that Dan shows his reflections about his divorce with his wife and it literally Emotional "Blue".

- Awesome

Loving it Well worth the wait Seems to intermingle their older sounds with their newer Brilluant

- Slow burn

This album is a slow burn that needs a few listens before it reveals its true self. On first, second and some of the third listen I just wasn't quite getting it, but it does reward hugely if you persist. This is an album that requires really attentive listening at first to hear everything that's going on. I'm a massive fan of the rough, raw and downright dirty blues rock of the first three albums from these guys and saw them as a 2 piece about 10 years ago, but this album is a blazing example of a band pushing itself and progressing as each album is released. At some stage The Black Keys will release an album that goes back to their raucous garage blues rock roots, imagine how good that's gonna sound. In the meantime crank up this killer album!

- Best thing ever

This is the best song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Masterpiece

This album is truly superb. Haunting and sublime, have had it on repeat all day and it just gets better and better.

- Lost their way

Until this point I don’t think they’ve released a dud. Even El Camino, which expanded on their original sound, kept some heart and grit intact. This feels thin and over produced in comparison. Their weakest to date. I suggest swapping Dangermouse for Rick Rubin on the next outing. Or I’ll stick to The Bonnevilles - who I’d recommend to fans of their old stuff.

- If you're looking for Rock and Roll keep looking

This is pure good grooves and probably one of the best albums out there right now. Weight of Love is a blissed out string filled wonder, finishing off with the bouncing Gotta get away. Everything in between is worth putting on Repeat for a few hours.

- Sounds like Pink Floyd

🤘

- great album

the whole albums great real easy listening weight of love and in our prime personal favourites

- A Proper Review

When having bought Fever before the rest of the album was released, I found it to be a groovy, blues AND pop enhanced track, which overall I liked. When I bought the rest of the album, I found it rather disappointing, and thought it was one of their worst albums. However, I sat down one day when doing some relaxing revision and clicked play (without shuffle), starting with track 1 (Weight of Love). It soon caught on and I realised that it was in fact a fantastic track, it just needed getting used. As goes for 'In Time' and 'Bullet in the Brain'. However, these select few songs (and a couple of others), are great. They are probably all 4 or 5 stars, but the rest of the tracks, and the album as a whole is not as striking as I (and I'm sure you as well) would have liked. This sums to 3.5 stars, which I have rounded down (against the modern laws of statistical mathematics!) due to the comparison to 'Brothers', 'El Camino' and 'Thickfreakness'. But I'd recommend buying for interest. Hope this helps ;)

- Weight of love, amazing

Yep

- Hypnotic incredible album

Killed it! Never cease to disappoint.

- Dull

Unimaginative, sterile, manufactired.. Dare i say boring? A band that run out of ideas 4 years ago.

- It definitely grows on you

I kinda liked it when I heard it first but ended up loving it. It's got a laid back 70s blues rock vibe that I can't get enough of! I don't think this a great departure from their other albums I just think it shows maturity and that's ok with me!

- Amazingg

Absolutely love this album. In my opinion, their best so far. I did love them when they were more raw but Weight Of Love is stunning, my favourite track by far, and I love how their style has changed and each album is bringing something different.

- Beautiful songs

Might not be as raw as the old albums but this has gone in a completely different direction, pulling it off magnificently. All the song are beautifully sung and written. I understand some TBK fans might not like it but I love it!

- Almost

Take fever off this album and it would be great but it's still there best album since attack and release. Still nice with a smoke and a few drinks.

- LOVE THIS SO MUCH

a new direction for the black keys but a good one, some great guitar sounds and patrick is as amazing as ever on the drums. You won't be disappointed

- Darkertheblue

It's an album that grows on you love it.

- OK

Ok but far off the mark from El Camino… I gotta admit I am disappointed

- An Interesting Journey

From the early-70s Pink Floyd-inspired opener (Weight of Love) to the Keith Richards/Rolling Stone Exile era-driven riff of Gotta Get Away, this produces many different and interesting sounds and thoughts along the way. The backing singing from Ann Regina and Alfreda McCrary (Wikipedia) is inspiring in the correct places too. Better than El Camino? Possibly.

- Great Album

At first I thought it was a bit slow and slightly boring compared to some of the Black Keys other work, but it grew on me and I found some of the tracks, such as ‘Weight of Love’, ‘Fever’, ‘Bullet in the Brain’, ‘It’s up to you now’ and ‘Gotta get away’, really enjoyable. Fantastic album, it grows on you, just give it time.

- Amazing

Just another awesome black keys album

- Classic in the making

Simply amazing stuff by this band. I cannot praise them enough for bringing back quality music into this generation. The Weight of Love and Bullet in the Brain makes me feel like I'm listening to a pink floyd album !! A modern masterpiece and probably my favourite song in the album has got to be Weight of Love. Great guitar work and very catchy tunes all the way through even till the end with the epic Gotta Get Away to finish it off. I can't wait to see you in concert guys bring on the O2 !!

- Turn Blue

This is a change from El Camino but after three or four listens I must admit I'm hooked. Weight of Love is an epic tune, unbelievable with headphones on. The rest of the album is excellent too. Well worth the money.

- Reminds me of a girl I once knew....

I played her Milosh 'you make me feel' and she played The Black Keys 'everlasting light' well ironically it wasn't everlasting! Sweet times nonetheless and the emotions resonated in every beat of my heart. This album is worse/blander than coldplay, atleast they are unashamed bed wetters....alluding to divorce?? I don't even want to ruminate about divorce.

- meh

An absalute deviation from the normal blues punk rock we love them for, there's no more overdrive or growling bass riffs, replaced insread with a smooth modern alternative vibe instead. It's not as good as previous albums, but good in it's own right, and demonstrates them widening their musical spectrum, worth a listen. The last rack I think gives us a peak of what's to come for the bands sound

- Different but Amazing

Slight style change for the band but the album is fresh and an amazing listen.

- Still good!

There are a lot of either 1 or 5 star reviews on here, with the 5's loving it and the 1's throwing around hipster bs terms like 'raw Blues' and other nonsense. I too have liked the Keys since album 1 (as if that gives anything merit) and I must say: I still very much enjoy them after listening to this. Compared to the mountains of terrible music/musicians out at the moment, this is a very chilled and upbeat jam, especially nice for something so late in a group's career. Perhaps it is lacking in killer rock guitar solos, slightly, but only compared to the older stuff (which they've had their whole lives to make and not just a year or so). So basically: If you're looking for a standard, refreshing, Keys album with awesome vocals and hard instrumental, which is bloody lovely to listen to, give this a go.

- Still the Best

The Black Keys evolve on every album. Many might not think this a good thing but I do. No band can survive if they don't constantly innovate . Turn Blue is one of the best albums I have heard in the last 12 months. There are no weak songs at all, but a few stand above the rest. Don't listen to these people who moan they aren't raw anymore. When I was younger I was raw, now I'm more polished just the same as these guys

- Move on....

Imagine for a moment if you are a musician, playing the same style of music for years with the same person, and never moving forward with new ideas and experimenting with different sounds how mind numbingly boring that would get. Their old music was great, and this is also, but don’t buy this if you want the same feel from the Big come up etc as you’ll be one of the many who is disappointed. Highly recommend this, great hooks in all the songs and well crafted. It’s sad to hear folks whining for 10 albums worth of Youth and young manhood by KOL. Like them, the Black Keys haven’t sold out but have moved on and evolved into great musicians and song writers.

- AMAZING ALBUM

This album is a really different mix from the black keys usual, however I believe they have chosen a correct turn as the album is slightly more refreshing then the others. Personally, I believe that 'Year in Review' and 'Weight of love' are the best songs. Although 'Fever' is a totally different tune but is still great. So glad I bought it, I listen to it almost every day!

- black keys

Good stuff, but not their usual style. preferred the more blues-rocky stuff of the last two albums. Hope they bring back the old style for the next album!

- Fever

It is very awesome my mum loves it

- different edge but good

Quite different to the other albums but then again the black keys never produce an album thats the same as previous ones. Seriously in love with the first song too, definately has bits of dark side of the moon in.

- Awesome!

Love this album. I have all of the Black Keys records and I think this is their best to date. Every song is really good.

- to all the reviewers who said "buy it"

I had never heard of them until now...where have I been? funky, goovy, rocky... love it, love it, love it. I'm so glad I took your advice..

- incredible

this album is amazing, long bluesy songs that make it an easy listening album

- Great Album

I have been a massive Black Keys fan for a while and Turn Blue has been up there with the top albums i have bought this year.Weight of love has to be my favourite song of the year. The guys just keep recording great music.Looking forward to seeing them in Glasgow next year.

- Turn Blue

Absolutely brilliant album - they just keep on improving in terms of their songwriting craft, musical prowess and diversity. Expecting a great set at Latitude based on these tunes and their awesome back catalogue...

- Cleverly evolved to sell.

Difficult one, I love it and I love The Keys but I still miss the original "rawness" and powerfully driven, Thick riffs of Rubber Factory and Thickfreakness. Magic Potion is great but the start of The Keys Commercialism and everything since has been geared the same way. Credit to the Two guys from Akon though, they've changed their style to sell but still produce unique and exciting material without Selling out in my opinion. Another job well done lads.

- Superb

Another brilliant addition by the keys, can't wait to see you on tour in March 2015.

- CRAP!

I had hoped The Black Keys would do some stuff similar to thier early albums, but I was wrong. its a psychedelic pile of trash

- Wha

This album is sooooooooooo good! It gets a krusty krab SUPAH! Weight of love I love 💕

- Grows on you

A lot different to their old stuff

- The singer's saved you

Really, the beat itself sounds like the kind of 'on hold' music you get, or stuff you hear in lifts, it's the lead singer (don't know what his name is) who's adopted an Alex Turner style lilt, (VERY Alex Turner-y, may I add) and saved them for what would elsewhile have been there downfall. It's good.

- Better with every listen

Was sceptical when i first listened to this last year, but on hearing some of the songs again, can safely say it is one of the best albums i've heard in a while.Different from the Black Keys of El Camino, but a whole heap better! You can just melt into the solo in weight of love, stunning!

- Brilliant

Another brilliant album from the black keys, very different from "El Camino" but still just as good.

- Awesome

A Mix of old and new

- Amazing

Sick album, best one I have listened to in a while.

- Love it

Weight of Love has to be one of the best anthems I've heard, honestly don't think this is a bad album

- Hmm

I'm a big Keys fan but this album really doesn't reach it for me. Fever is amazing but I enjoy classics like 'Gold on the ceiling'.

- black keys

the guitar riff at the end of IN OUR PRIME is so good it makes me cry.

- Mind blowing

Truly Incredible album

- What Happened?!

Bought and listened to the full album... Hunka Junk. There is a market for this stuff, it's not Black Keys fans of old. If you liked the Black Keys because of any album from Brothers-backwards, don't buy this. Every track is synth and harmony laden, the harmonies, grooves and guitar lines are boring and without imagination. In saying that, the mix has changed up - old albums had 1 pop-py tune on it, this album is all blah-zeh pop synth w*nk, except for "It's up to you now", which once you listen to, I'm sure you'll agree, we should all just buy that as a single to show them that we miss their older work - which they for some reason are still obviously capable of doing, but refrain from it for whatever reason. I give it 2 stars because musically it's fine, execution and style is ok, but the songs are weak and lifeless, no groove, no blues, no soul - and those three things are what made us all love them in the first place
