Daryl Hall & John Oates - Rich Girl

Rich Girl by Daryl Hall & John Oates Song Info

"Rich Girl" is a song by Daryl Hall and John Oates. On March 26, 1977, it became their first (of six) number one singles on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The single originally appeared on the 1976 album Bigger Than Both of Us. The song's lyrics are about a spoiled girl who can rely on her parents' money to do whatever she wants. The song was rumored to be about the then-scandalous newspaper heiress Patty Hearst. In fact, the title character in the song is based on a spoiled heir to a fast-food chain who was an ex-boyfriend of Daryl Hall's girlfriend, Sara Allen. "But you can't write, 'You're a rich boy' in a song, so I changed it to a girl," Hall told Rolling Stone.[1] Several years later, Hall read an interview with David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam killer, in which Berkowitz claimed that "Rich Girl" had motivated him to murder (though interestingly, the song was not released until after the Son of Sam murders had already begun, casting doubts on that suggestion).[citation needed] Hall & Oates later reflected this disturbing fact in the lyrics of the song "Diddy Doo Wop (I Hear Voices)" on the album Voices.[1] "Rich Girl" has been covered by Nina Simone on her 1978 LP Baltimore, by Australian R&B singer Selwyn on his 2002 CD Meant To Be, by Everclear on their 2008 cover compilation The Vegas Years, and by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes on their 2008 album Have Another Ball!. Rap group Young Gunz also sampled the song on their debut album Tough Luv. Hip hop group Down With Webster sampled the song in their 2009 hit "Rich Girl$."

- I LOVE H&O

Their songs remind me of my childhood. I've seen them in concert twice within the last three years. "Method of Modern Love" is one of my all time favs, plus "I Can't Go for That..."

- okay

the only song i enjoy is rich girl. but they must be good that song is good enough to get it a 4

- I like it!

I'm only 21 but i grew up listening to oldschool, my dad always played music from the 70's & 80's from his music collection. im rediscovering hall & oates. I really like their music :) Some of my favorites are adult education, out of touch, i can't go for that, method of modern love, say it isn't so, maneater, some things are better left unsaid, you make my dreams, private eyes and kiss on my list. I love the whole album :)

- Excellent Collection

Fantastic collection of songs from this dynamite duo. This collection has all of the great radio hits and a few I actually have not heard. Great stuff!

- Awesome album

Classic!

- Best of Hall and Oates

These are most of the best songs from the duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates. It includes many of their best songs including "Rich Girl" "Private Eyes" "Out of Touch" and many of their other great songs on one album. One song that should be on here that isn't however is "She's Gone".

- Is Lovin Feeling from the movie "Ghost"?

(Title)

- Sexiest music

Really gets the mood going. I make sweet, sweet love to my wife while listening to this whole album. - Cheryl

- Soul of Rock and Roll!

This is what its about!!! LOVE! yea it makes me put a "Kiss on My List" and say to my girl "You Make My Dreams Come True"!!! Whoa! Hall and Oates is absolutely amazing!!!

- Includes some great classics

This is a nice compliation. If you have serious favorites, you'd be better off buying 2 or 3, but for $9.99 I think you would do okay with this minus a couple you probably would never listen too. And H&O never go out of style. 20 years later I can still pump them up on my iPod.

- A whole Album?

I thought this would have been only a single.

- the very best of darryl hall and john oats

music this old shouldnt cost so much. 1.29 for a tweenty year old song just ridiculous!

- these singers are great and the music is excellent!

this is the best of these two and i would recoment it to all who like this kind of music.

- ahh flashbacks

My mom always listened to this stuff when I was younger and now i work at a grocery store and they play a fair amount of songs by Daryl Hall and John Oates, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, Elton John, and a whole bunch of other artists you would hear on some soft rock station. I don't have a problem with this... it just reminds me of my child hood. good times... good times :) (and i still like to listen to this stuff because it's classic but funny thing is I didn't even live in the 80's)

- Hall and oates Greatest hits

Great collection of there music.

- Great

Even if ya don't recognize all the songs, the voices are impactful

- Awesomeness!

Wow, I really like this album. I never knew that they did so many of the songs i listen to and like! I'm definitely not from that generation, but then again i like a lot of older songs! haha buy it.

- :)

Hall and Oates rock!! Nothin else I'd rather listen to on a warm summers eve sippin a cold one!!!

- Wow, really brings back memories...

I never realized how may great songs this duo put out until you hear them all on one album. They have a really great body of work!

- Classic Music

I just love Hall & Oates.....every song is a classic.

- maneater

maneater completes this album :)

- Great album!

This is a must have!

- Great Album

White boys got soul!! lol I love them great collection.

- The best of Hall & Oats

These songs take me back to a more simpler time in life. I love " Kiss on my List" that has always been my favorite! I love them all!

- GREAT!!!!!

I lost my old tape of Hall & Oats Greatest Hits in a move. Nice to have it back.

- Made My Dreams Come True

Hall & Oates is a really good band from the 80's my sugestion is if your gonna buy a song buy You Make my dreams

- A good second place

Good album, but the best one for the H&O fan is call "Looking Back". It has almost all of the all time favorites. Wish I could find the audio from the Bravo show called "Musicians" when these guys were on it....what awesome versions of these songs. If you want a sample go to youtube and type in "Hall and Oates, Rich Girl" for a sample.

- Not the single version!!!

The single that was released in 1984 had a wonderful rhythmic open and a cold end. Just brilliant! While this is the album version you really need the 1st track to go along with it otherwise is starts abruptly....be careful if you looking for the original single.

- private eye rock

private eye rocks i mean even tough the other songs are great but this is awsome

- Delicious

Hall and Oates. This is the perfect duo. Absolutely perfect.

- Good listen to of the work of this group

I personally love "Rich Girl", "You Make My Dreams", "I Can't Go for That" and the thinly veiled laugh at President Reagan, "Out of Touch". The other songs are easy to listen to, fun for the most part, and feature some of the great licks of the 80's. Daryl Hall has, as many have said before, an extraordinary range and is "the best white soul singer alive" (not my words, but it fits).

- Oh Nice

They look like a couple of pornstars on that cover, I'm pretty sure this deserves 5 stars just for that

- It Should Be Subtitled The Best Of The R.C.A. Years

This collection highlights the strongest work Hall & Oates recorded for R.C.A.. None of their sides for Atlanta, namely "She's Gone," and nothing from their post R.C.A. association with Arista, which would become part of R.C.A. appears here, all of these songs except for "Adult Education" which is supposed to be a 12" inch single but is an edit, are full length versions, for the full length "Adult Education" refer to "Rock & Soul Part One." This cd is a chronological collection of singles, the disc is filled to capacity and very well mastered. For the casual fan of radio pop this is an excellent collection, for the die-hard this serves as a good reference but doesn't contain a cut rare enough to peak interest.

- Great!

Love this album, always great to hear, really takes me back to the 1980's!

- Lasting soul

I was born in the 60s so I got to see and hear a lot of classic music by some of the greatest acts in music. These two were apart of life for me whether at the beach or at the club you were bound to hear the sound of Hall and Oats where ever you went. Now in my forties Ipods have replaced records, cassettes, and CDs. A lot of the soul is missing in todays music but the one thing that is not missing is their music in my home or in my car. I love it more today than yesterday. I own a lot of their music but a lot of their music owns a piece of me. Love it,

- Don't let those jeri curls fool you!

I'm not ashamed to say that hall and Oates are one of my favorite bands. And oh man, whenever the synth drops on "i can't go for that" you know I be gettin down! " Sara smile " is probably my favorite of theirs. But for some odd reason it makes me want to cry. All in all, this band has so many great hits and I love them.

- One Very Best is Missing...?

I love everything these guys put out over the years, but my all time favorite song by them, "She's Gone" is not included for some reason. Bummer.

- A great album!

These two are talented. A ton of these songs are good and great to listen too. I have the whole album already! Buy the album! If you don't want to the songs I highly reccomend are Sara Smile, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, Kiss On My List, Private Eyes, I Can't Go For That and Family Man.

- Great stuff

I may be only 15 but I grew up with my parents playing this kind of music so I like it a lot.

- Very Best of Hall&Oats

Some songs transend through situations in time...This album is not just full of enjoyment for me, but transend through my ups and downs in the 80's...I Love this album! Thanks H&O. U guys were the best in the 80's, and still are....The RAM....
