The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower

All Along the Watchtower by The Jimi Hendrix Experience Song Info

"All Along the Watchtower," originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan, was record by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1968 at Olympic Studios in London, beginning with a recording session on 21 January. According to engineer Andy Johns, Jimi Hendrix had been given a tape of Dylan’s recording by publicist Michael Goldstein, who worked for Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman. “(Hendrix) came in with these Dylan tapes and we all heard them for the first time in the studio”, recalled Johns. According to Hendrix’s regular engineer Eddie Kramer, the guitarist cut a large number of takes on the first day, shouting chord changes at Dave Mason who had turned up at the session and played guitar. Halfway through the session, bass player Noel Redding became dissatisfied with the proceedings and left. Mason then took over on bass. According to Kramer, the final bass part was played by Hendrix himself. Kramer and Chas Chandler mixed the first version of “All Along The Watchtower” on January 26, but Hendrix was quickly dissatisfied with the result and went on re-recording and overdubbing guitar parts during June, July, and August at the Record Plant studio in New York. Engineer Tony Bongiovi has described Hendrix becoming increasingly dissatisfied as the song progressed, overdubbing more and more guitar parts, moving the master tape from a four-track to a twelve-track to a sixteen-track machine. Bongiovi recalled, “Recording these new ideas meant he would have to erase something. In the weeks prior to the mixing, we had already recorded a number of overdubs, wiping track after track. (Hendrix) kept saying, ‘I think I hear it a little bit differently.' " The finished version was released on the album Electric Ladyland in September 1968. Hendrix’s obsessive re-working of the song transformed it from a quiet acoustic ballad to a pyrotechnic display of Hendrix’s guitar virtuosity. The single reached number five in the British charts, and number 20 on the Billboard chart. Dylan has described his reaction to hearing Hendrix's version: "It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." In the booklet accompanying his Biograph album, Dylan said: "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way." Hendrix's version was featured in the movies Withnail and I, Rush, Private Parts, Forrest Gump, A Bronx Tale, Vegas Vacation, Tupac: Resurrection and the 2001 remake of Brian's Song and also in television shows such as The Simpsons, in episodes "Mother Simpson" and "My Mother the Carjacker". The History Channel series Ax Men uses a portion of the song in its opening credits. The song was also mentioned by Fox Mulder in The X-Files season one episode 'Beyond the Sea.' More recently, All Along The Watchtower received an infusion, when composer Bear McCreary adapted the song, for the Sci-Fi Phenom: "Battlestar Galactica" (Hendrix's version also appears, in the series finale!) This version of the song appears at number 48 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs ever, and in 2000, British magazine Total Guitar named it top of the list of the greatest cover versions ever.

Jimi Hendrix?! What can I say but just plain masterful! :) amazing guitarist, great album, one that shows a range of his musical talent. Groovy beat, a real impression on music particularly in the 70's

- no bob

no Bob Marley in the black music month icon. kind of disappointed in you iprunes. Bob changed the world of music and he is most certainly black. he should be celebrated alongside jimmy, michael, and all the other black artists that came to rise up to do what they loved. you guys should fix this.

- Corrected Volume Problems!!

Bought 'Hey Joe' from this iTunes LP a few months ago and the volume & sound quality was a little underwhelming. I checked back again & liked what I heard in the sample and bought it again. Someone at iTunes had jumped right on the problem and now this LP has the 3D punch, volume, and power that Jimi deserves >> Thanks iTunes!! This LP is pure electric rock & blues genius.

- Jimi Rocks!!!!!

Everyone should own a copy of this. This is the bible.

- Amazing

This is the first CD I ever owned. Got it for my 12th b-day. Life changing!

- Best Guitarist Ever

Jimi Hendrix is hands down the greatest guitarist that ever lived this album is just proving that even more. Highly recommend this album shows the best of all the great music by Hendrix. His solos and riffs are amazing they cannot be matched by anybody.

- I wish I could go back

And force him to stay up that fateful night.

- awesome

Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists ever. Im in orchestra, and i am proud that i played purple haze in a big concert

- Jimi ROCKS

U say

- @ willcalli

Dear will[smokestoomuch]calli[bud], One or two things; your ear is immature, or you lost your hearing at birth. when your music outlives you, then talk to me. Your ignorant to the facts of his recognition. The man rocks on the microphone WHILE melting faces. Stop hating on the man and start listening to music instead hearing it. He is was and always will be a legend in my mind regardless of media.

- ONE MORE TIME........IT IS THE BEST OF THE 60's

I bought this especially for the song CASTLE"S MADE OF SAND, and soon found myself drifting off back to my teen years and remembering what made those years so special. IT WAS THE MUSIC... IMAGINE JIMI HENDRIX and try to imagine him playing back up guitar for LITTLE RICHARD...it was only years prior to his solo career took off that , that was what he was doing. WOW to bad for LITTLE RICHARD maybe he too should have listened to JIMI when he had an idea NO need for me to go into each song look at the line up YOU KNOW THE SONGS.... YOU KNOW how much they meant to you and one thing that means a lot to us at this point in our life is memories. Well for a small price here you can have all those great memories back...JUST TRY TO PUTON TRACK 2 FIRE in your car and NOT find yourself singing along and maybe like me doing 90 mph !!!! This is our past and IMO staying young is something in your mind so BUY THIS and listen to when life was simple and your only worries were do I have enbough cash for that OTHER HENDRIX ALBUM TOO? SO BUY IT !!!!! You willbe glad you did St James

- Very nice

i like it because of the way jimi sings. and the best part is that its all about the guitar.

- Good Music

All the new music is gay justin bieber or jonas brother or rap witch even isnt music. They take a line and repeat it seventeen times over. After awile it gets flat out annoying. Hendrix was amazing, The Who is amazing, AC/DC, Metallica, alice Cooper, Bob Marley and the Whalers. All the modern music is just terrible.

- along the watch tower

Along the watch tower is so hard driving it sends chills down my spine HENDRIX forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Great...

There are some albums where it's impossible to give them anything but a 5/5. This is one of them.

- A Real Rocker

Jimi Hendrix is obviously one of the greatest guitarists to ever exist, and this collection of classics like "Voodoo Child" and "All Along The Watchtower" are great representations. Although he is sometimes dismissed as not as "important" as other groups, he definitely has raw talent surging from his guitar. In my opinion, he is the 2nd best guitarist ever, only with the legendary Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin surpassing him.

- Reply to why like this....

You are so completely ignorant to the genius of Hendrix I have to point out your review and counter it with five stars out of respect for this top class performer and creative musician.

- Jimi Rules All

That's what I have to say.

- Good, I guess.

I'm not a mondo-Hendrix fan, but I bought this whole album to get better deals on "Fire", "Hey Joe", and "Voodoo Child." Sadly, I don't think it was the best usage of my money. I mean, some of these songs are very good. I think the three aforementioned songs are Hendrix's best. But, the rest of the material is just really loud distorted rock. "If 6 was 9" - it's just obscenely loud. It has very view great musical qualities. Added to this Jimi's mediocre singing voice (in my opinion), and the music just becomes too loud to listen too. I will not in any way question his virtuosity on guitar, but songs like "Dolly Dagger" don't really entertain me. Just buy songs people.

- And Then Wind Cries Jimi

The. Greatest. Ever. That's it. RIP

- Jimi Rocks

Jimi is a MAN BEAST BEAR PIG

- INDESCRIBABLE!!!

Jimi Hendrix was and still is an icon, legend, hero, and the greatest musical performer of his time. he will always live on through the music (as long as kids listen to real music instea of rap)I would highly recommend buying this album. not just for your sake. but for jimis. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

- NoamKoKo

This is the best album I have ever heard. Ever. Great songs! Beautiful melodies and lyrics! Full of emotions and feelings.

- Amazing

No amount of stars can express how amazing Mr. Hendrix is. This album is only a glimpse of the talent Mr. Hendrix had.

- Greatest left handed guitarist

I wish he was alive

- Hendrix

Star spangled banner rocks

- Legend

Not the biggest Hendrix fan but I have to say he is most influential guitar player that ever lived his music WILL go down in history

- If 6 was 9

Classic Hendrix

- Its the best you can get!

In my opinion once you get to the top five guitarists of all time, there all so good that its to hard to compare wich is better. But hendrix plays in a way that no one can match. In the songs, "Angel", "Little Wing", and "The Wind Cries Mary" hendrix does not show off the famous riffs and solos that he shows in "Purple Haze" or "Hey Joe". He shows off his amazing skill of letting his guitar carve the pathway for to amazing songs. This album includes all his biggest hits, his slower, more involved masterpiece, his solo filled, rock songs, and his shorter, fun, blues tunes. This has it all.

- this is as good as it gets

im 19 ive been hendrix fan since i was born luv all these songs

- Outstanding.

Jimi will always be one of my all time favorite guitarists.

- Jimi...Jimi...Jimi.

Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist that ever lived, as much as I love Hendrix, if he would of still been alive today the magic really wouldn't be there anymore. If he would of been alive today rock would still be the dominate genre of music Instead of this stuff people call music today, eventually Hendrix's "magic" would of burned out.

- BEAST

Jimi Hendrix is awesome, though I do prefer Jimmy Page more. But both very great guitar players. Great tune 5/5! This song is a must, if you like Hendrix! Purple Haze = Awesomeness!

- Groovy!

This world needs more hero's like Hendrix.

- El numero UNO

Amazing album. It's truly an experience. My soul shivers from his guitar playing and soul full voice. Johnny Allen Hendrix. Thank you for you existence.

- Electric Ladyland

His #2 album, but still there. Nothing like watching him in a small hall setting the axe on fire. But the best that is out on the net now. My vinyl is all scratchy !

- Yea James marshal hendrix

The best and always will be!

- YEAH JIMI

AWESOME!
