David Bowie & Queen - Under Pressure

Under Pressure by David Bowie & Queen Song Info

"Under Pressure" is a 1981 song by Queen and David Bowie. It marked Queen's first released collaboration with another recording artist, and is featured on their 1982 album Hot Space. The song reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also number 31 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s. Bowie had originally come to the studios in order to sing backing vocals on another Queen song, "Cool Cat". For whatever reason, Bowie was not satisfied with his contribution, and his vocals were removed from the track. Queen had been working on an earlier version of the song under the title "Feel Like" but were not yet satisfied with the result. The final version that became "Under Pressure" evolved from a jam session the band had with Bowie at his studio in Montreux, Switzerland, therefore it was credited as co-written by the five musicians. According to Queen bassist John Deacon (as quoted in a French magazine in 1984), however, the song's primary musical songwriter was Freddie Mercury โ€” though all contributed to the arrangement. The earlier, embryonic version of the song without Bowie , "Feel Like" , is widely available in bootleg form. There has been some confusion about who created the song's famous bass line. John Deacon said (in Japanese magazine Musiclife in 1982, and in the previously mentioned French magazine) that David Bowie had created it. In more recent interviews, Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have credited the bass riff to Deacon; Bowie also said on his website that the bass line was already written before he became involved. The September 2005 edition of online music magazine Stylus singled out the bass line as the best in popular music history. Roger Taylor was frequently rumored to be the song's chief writer. However, it appears that he served more as an intermediary for Mercury and Bowie (two of rock music's biggest stars at the time), being friends with both men. Taylor was involved in the production of the track and did some preliminary mixes with Bowie in New York, but Bowie was dissatisfied with these results and wanted to re-record everything (as claimed by May on a November 1982 interview for IM&RW magazine). In the end, the final mix was done with the involvement of Mercury and recording engineer Mack, "under pressure" from Bowie and Taylor (according to Brian May in the same 1982 interview). Although very much a joint project, only Queen incorporated the song into their live shows at the time. Bowie chose not to perform the song before an audience until the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, when he and Annie Lennox sang it as a duet (backed by the surviving Queen members). However, since Mercury's death and the Outside tour in 1995, Bowie has performed the song at virtually every one of his live shows, with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey taking Mercury's vocal part. The song also appeared in setlists from A Reality Tour mounted by Bowie in 2004, when he frequently would dedicate it to Freddie Mercury. Queen + Paul Rodgers have recently performed the song as well. While Bowie was never present for a live performance of the song with Mercury, Roger Taylor instead filled for back-up vocals usually in unison with Mercury as Mercury would take over most of Bowie's parts.

- Bowie is God!

I have the album on LP and I play it all day long! Bowie is a genius and I don't understand why anybody would rate this album any less than 5 stars. If I could, I'd give it 10!

- Album only

To Lebelcom regarding "Modern Love". You can get this as a single from the "ChangesBowie" album. Sometimes you just need to look. The "Best of Bowie" is well worth buying though. All of the songs are hits and this is a great compilation album. The best of the Best Ofs that iTunes has to offer.

- Awesomeness!!

Bowie is simply amazing and when you hear all these songs you will realize how much his music has influenced other artists.

- Odd song but somehow pleasing!

I didn't know that he sang all these songs, the album had all these good songs.

- Great compilation from an amazing star

I grew up listening to David Bowie, throughout the 80-'s to 90's, his music was the soundtrack of my youth & I'm so saddened that he has left us. An amazing talent, gone back to its source. RIP & God bless David Bowie, thank you sir for all of the memories & music you left us in your wake, truly, we have no adequate way of saying thank you...except to help your memory live on through your music & live on it will. I've had his family in my thoughts since I woke up to this awful news at 4:50 am CST. I cannot imagine their sadness right now, to us, he was a rock & roll legend, always fantastic & unique...to them, he was a husband, a father & a friend. God keep them during this loss. To anyone trying to decide what compilation to buy of David Bowies, this one is great, it's LOADED with some of his most memorable hits, so very worth the price. #RIP David Bowie Ziggy Stardust took back to the stars & our world lost a legend.

MISSING THE MOST ESSENTIAL BOWIE MATERIAL

- Only the single disc version!?

Okay, I understand every single country has a different version of this compilation, but what I don't understand is why iTunes only has the single disc version instead of the double disc version! This version is really not much different from the 1990 compilation, "Changesbowie". Well, here are a few differences: 1. The non-album single, "John, I'm Only Dancing" is exempt. 2. The title track from "Diamond Dogs" is not included (which the double-disc version has). 3. The versions of "Young Americans", "Golden Years", "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion" are the single edits rather than the full album versions. 4. This album has the original version of "Fame" instead of the 1990 remix. 5. What's been added is Bowie's three duets from the 80's, "Under Pressure" (with Queen), "This is Not America" (with the Pat Methany Group) and his cover of "Dancing in the Street" (with Mick Jagger), but probably the most obscure one is "I'm Afraid of Americans" form his 1997 album, "Earthling". If you already have a good assortment of Bowie material from the 70's and even the 80's, then I don't recommend buying the single disc version of this compilation. I recommend going out there and seeing if you could find the double disc version, because that definitely shows a fine example of David Bowie's entire career; it's an essential career-spanning compilation that I strongly recommend. If iTunes had that version instead of this, I would have easily given it 5 stars!
