- Brilliant

Brilliant album. It captures the essence of what goes on and breaks them down fundamentally. Only downside is remixes, but it is lovely altogether.

- Why not remastered? Terrible remixes.

"The Blue Notebooks" is a brilliant album, but Deutsche Grammophon has given it a second rate 15th anniversay release edition. First, they didn't even bother to remaster the album in 2018 sound. Second, the remixes sound like the originals with club beats and Valium added. The new tracks are brief and add nothing to the album. Two of the versions of "On The Nature of Daylight" have been previously released, and the new recording seems redundant. Five out of five stars for the original album. But sorry, only two out of five for this lazy and sloppy 15th anniversay edition.

- Sublime, but...

The music is contemplative, eerie, evocative, and often sublime. The readings by Tilda Swinton, unfortunately, are at a very low volume compared to the background music and, especially, the annoyingly distracting typewriter, and are, therefore, barely audible. Of course, this isn’t a criticism of Swinton’s, but of the person or persons in charge of the audio mixing. Nonetheless, this is a phenomenally beautiful and pleasing album to listen to. Addendum: After listening to this album several times now, I’ve come to think that the readings of Kafka’s works are distracting at best, and that typewriter is maddeningly annoying. Without any of those additions, this would easily be a 5-star album, as I had originally rated, but I’ve now decided to lower it to 3 stars.
