Cause I'm Fairwheather Johnson "JOHNSON!!"
Some people didn't like this album, i do not know why, maybe they were expecting a radio hit song. But i feel it has the true alternative essence of the early 90's, now i am an extreme music fan, but Hootie & The Blowfish is still sounding in my ipod and making me think back of those old days when everything was the way it should be!!!
When the album Cracked Rear View came out I was totally in awe! With the exception of one song on that album I loved them all to the point that I could listen to them over and over and not get tired of them. And even the one song on that CD that was the exception to the others was ok. I stood in line at a midnight release at a Media Play (remember those stores?) to get this album and when I got it home I couldn't believe how bad it really was. Actually bad isn't exactly the right thing to say, more like the previous album (Cracked Rear View) was so good that this one just coudn't compete. There are two songs on this album that I really like, "Tucker's Town" and "Old Man & Me". Those two songs remind me of the Cracked Rear View album and are really great songs. The only other song worth mentioning on this album is "Honeyscrew", all other songs are mediocre at best. So just a warning: if you' are expecting more songs of the likes that appeared on the Cracked Rear View album, on this album, you'll be disappointed.
I've listened to this album forward and backward a hundred times over and it never gets old. Truly one of their best and I have many a fond memory when I hear these beautiful sounds.
I love this album. I must of listened to this album 1000s of time, and it never gets old. It always takes me back to my youth and reminds me of the good times. No doubt their first album was fantastic and gave Hootie their breakthrough. I think because of the major success of their first album had, this album was overlooked. In my opinion this was their best album.
Too bad these guys got pigeonholed into the "Cracked Rearview Mirror sound". This was a very underrated album that was panned back in the day because it did not sound like its predecessor. It's a shame because the band tried to do something different so we weren't hearing the first album continued. If you don't download the whole thing then check out "The Old Man and Me", "Honeyscrewed", "Tuckers Town" and my personal favorite "The Earth Stopped Cold at Dawn". Sometimes it takes people years to realize they made a mistake and I can only people revisit this one and realize just how good this one is. Of course the people who panned this are probably the same people who thought Darius Rucker's first name was Hootie.
I think people had expectations that were wholly unrealistic after they heard cracked rear view. This album is darker and more intimate that I think any of their other albums. The songs bleed a weariness and soulsearching feeling. I have probably listened to this album over 50 times since it was released. Honeyscrew When I'm alone, and Let it Be are still as haunting now as when I first heard them. Oddly enough, since I became a father to a little girl, she crawls away has been floating around my mind.
Cracked View Mirror no doubt is the mainstay of this bands legacy. However, The Johnson collection keeps Hootie & The Blowfish where they belong and that's steeped in a southern blues tradition. All but two on this well done collection are definitely consistent with what I've come to expect from this great band. You can compare this album to Cracked all day but if Hootie didn't breakout just a bit then it sounds all the same. I say GREAT JOB and I believe the vocals are first rate. Although this collection is older it still sounds current and could give many a run for their money. Hootie, give us more please!
