Bruce Springsteen - My Hometown

My Hometown by Bruce Springsteen Song Info

"My Hometown" is a single by Bruce Springsteen off his Born in the U.S.A. album, that was the record-tying seventh and last top 10 single to come from it, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It also topped the U.S. adult contemporary chart, making the song Springsteen's only #1 song on this chart to date. The song is a synthesizer-based, low-tempo number that features Springsteen on vocals. The song’s lyrics begin with the speaker’s memories of his father instilling pride in the family’s hometown. While it first appears that the song will be a nostalgic look at the speaker’s childhood, the song then goes on to describe the racial violence and economic depression that he witnessed as an adolescent and middle-aged man. The song concludes with the speaker’s proclamation that he hopes to move his family out of the town. Some of the song's images derive directly from Springsteen's experiences growing up in Freehold Borough, New Jersey, in particular the racial strife in 1960s New Jersey and economic tensions from the same times (the "textile mill being closed" was the A & M Karagheusian Rug Mill at Center and Jackson Streets of Freehold). "My Hometown" stands in contrast to songs like John Mellencamp’s “Small Town,” which tend to romanticize the struggles of growing up in rural America. Additionally, "My Hometown" is perhaps a clearer representation of the themes presented in the title track of the album it originated from. While "Born in the U.S.A." is a more bombastic tune, its mistrust of blind patriotism and nostalgia is often lost on listeners. Such ideas are more easily audible in "My Hometown." The music video for "My Hometown" was a straightforward video filming of a performance of the song at a Springsteen and E Street Band concert late in the Born in the U.S.A. Tour, eschewing fast-paced cutting for slower montages of Springsteen and various band members. Despite its lack of visual excitement, it still managed substantial MTV airplay. "My Hometown" was a staple selection on the Born in the U.S.A. Tour, in an arrangement very similar to the album. Springsteen sometimes preceded the song with a story about the tall veterans' monument in front of the courthouse in Freehold; later in the tour he announced gifts to local food banks, union funds, and related activities before playing the song. "My Hometown" was omitted during the 1988 Tunnel of Love Express Tour, but then appeared at all twenty performances on that year's later Human Rights Now! Tour, where it saluted people trying to take responsibility for their own freedom. It has been played on and off on Springsteen's various tours ever since; it is part of the repertoire of songs that Springsteen pulls out on a given night when he thinks it fits the theme or mood of a concert or location. The song has been performed about 260 times through 2008.

- Sherry Darling

It's ironic this album is being slammed by someone named Sherry, considering Bruce once wrote a song about a girl by that name (on The River album). Although, it wasn't the most flattering lyrical description, so maybe it's fitting! Anyway Sherry, stick to mindless pop trash like the Biebs and Katy Perry and the rest of us will listen to well written material by artists who can actually sing, like Bruce. By the way, iTunes, could you please upgrade the cover for this album? For whatever reason the current one is a bit dirty looking. Thanks!

- Classic album

Simply put, an all time great.

- holy cow

this album produces hit after hit after hit, i like everyone of these songs.

- Springsteen's Best Album

If you didin't think anything could measure up to Born to Run, YOU WERE WRONG. This is by far Bruce's best work and it includes the classics such as, Born In the USA, Glory Days, My Hometown and of course Dancing in the Dark. Every track on this album is great. MUST BUY.

- Bruce is the best.

This is music sweet music. Glory days.

- Bad

Born in the USA=ok Lisa Edelstein hates him....

- great album but dont call yourself a fan if this one is your favorite

seriously a great bruce album both popy and great rock but bruce has had better stuff than this but still im on fire is amazing

- The Boss can never lose his name

When I was about 4 years old my dad would play this CD, and I would dance around the family room. I feel like we did this a lot. I called the CD "the man with his hand in his pocket" or something. I loved it then and I still love it now as an 18 year old. I really do like Bruce Springsteen and wish I was around when he was the hottest thing in town! now a days people don't know who he is! At least he is still playing and still has his voice! now I just need to get to one of his concerts!

- Cool

Glory days is awesome

- The Boss

The Boss all ways never failed to wow, and this shows it. He is amazing and whoever disagrees isn't American.

- Goosebumps

I'm on fire just gives me goosebumps. I dance to working on the highway. I scream the lyrics to glory days. I. Love. The. Boss.

- Hippies hate him

The cover song really shows how bad vets were treated when they came back from Vietnam. All you hippies just shut up your no better than soldiers yourself!!! And he is not peeing on the flag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- BRUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!

This is album sold the most copies of any in Columbia's long history, and is considered one of the best of it's time. This album truly embodies Bruce's spirit and passion and shows how much of himself he puts into his music. In a time during the 1980's where elecronic mixes and a more pop style were emerging Bruce stood tall and made one of his best albums ever. Serving as Nebraska's follow-up this was a tough album to make for Bruce as he struggled to break from the dark themes of Nebraska and return to his normal up-beat style. Although he managed to do this when he broke through with the first song Bobby Jean, the album still has some darker tones to it if you listen carefully. These tones are not cliche, but are rather a testament to how much Bruce pours himself into his music. Including Born in the USA, Im Goin Down, Darlington County, Glory Days, No Surrender, and Dancing in the Dark; this is considered one of the best rock albums ever made and one of Springsteen's best.

- Good Ol Fashion Bruce!!!

Everysong on this album is sooo amazing!!! Avoid the popularity of songs cause everyone of these songs are awesome!! Definitly a buyer!!!!

- Born to love Bruce

I totally agree that Bruce is amazing and believe me I know what it's like to have an obsessed parent my dad has gone to everyone of his concerts and has anything with Bruce on it also ever sense I was little I have gone to his concerts Which was my first concert I have ever been to and there has been many more with him i think his concert are the best because they are always very fun and lively and I just want to say that if you haven't seen the jimmy Fallon episode with Bruce you should go check it out cuz it was amazing and u don't want to miss it

- Best Album Ever

This is the greatest album ever written by any musician, any genre. Reasons why I treat it as such: 1) Bruce's songs, with their tone and lyrics, perfectly capture American sentiment. I wasn't even born in the 80's but I can feel exactly what it was like to live in that decade just by listening to these songs. The themes presented in the album hold true to this day, and are much more rich and complex than most pop songs, especially by today's standards. 2) The album demonstrates mastery over both song types: rock n' roll (Cover Me) and slower songs (I'm on Fire). Few artists can cover both styles in one cohesive album. 3) The songs on this album represent almost one fifth of my #1 songs playlist, and this is my only album in which I rate every single song with 5 stars. I remember being a little kid looking at the record cover of my dad's copy of Born in the U.S.A., thinking about the blown up American flag in the backgroud and how funny it looked juxtaposed with the pink-red cap sticking out of Bruce's pants. Interestingly enough, this was the only album cover I remember looking at during my childhood- maybe because it sounded so much better than all the others?

- Love it

Bruce's greatest album (in my opinion)

- USA! USA! USA!

Good song

- Simply the boss...

Born in the USA definitely isn't Bruce's best album and I'd actually rank it 3rd, maybe 4th in his catalog but that says more about Springsteen's music writing abilities than anything. This album is amazing and so many artists wish they could come up with something once in their careers half as good as this album. Although it's sad it took until 1984 for Springsteen to get the chart topping singles his albums deserved I'm glad this album gave him that. RECORD SEVEN, TOP 10 SINGLES!!! Some of my favorites on this album include I'm Goin Down and Bobby Jean. Who hasn't thought about losing a friend or perhaps a first love when you listen to the lyrics of that song, only to end with the amazing sound that blasts out of THE BIG MAN Clarence Clemons' Sax. Great album, and a must buy, along with most of Bruce's catalog with the E Street Band. and it never gets old to say...... BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!

- iTunes store has problems

The Song is great, but the item was inadvertantly ordered twice because of slow processing. I clicked on the "report a problem" icon, but that lead me no where to report the problem!

- Amazing album Bruce is amazing

Bruce i one of the most iconic rock stars ever and this is one of his greatest albums with every song truly spectacular. I'm doing a report on him and think he is spectacular and one of the most talented people out there .

- Classic Springsteen

Although this isn’t my favorite Springsteen album (can anything beat “Born to Run”?), I still enjoy it tremendously. I have listened to the songs on here numerous times. My favorites are the title track, “I’m On Fire,” and “Dancing in the Dark.” Lastly, I would like to thank Courtney Cox for inspiring the Carlton dance.

- GREAT ALBUM

This is one of 8'0s classic, i got it on Vynil after on CD, and now on Mp3, this i could recomended to you becouse you'd never tired to listen it, since first to the end, is like Bryan Adams (Reckless), Bon Jovi (Slippery When Wet) or U2 (The Joshua Tree), you'd want to listen again and again...

- The Booming 80s Anthem Album

Bruce had a string of successful albums before this one, but this flung him into the superstar status that he clings to today. With "Born in the USA," he was able to marry oft-bleak tales of working class people with simple but infectiously catchy riffs and choruses. There's not a track wasted or a trace to filler on this lineup of twelve memorable tunes, more than half of which were Top Ten hits. Even the album cuts like Working on the Highway rock with a nod to its rockabilly roots. This album is a personal favorite of mine that introduced me to rock, so this will always hold a special place in my collection. To me, this is the last time Bruce was at his best for a long time. Choice Tracks: Dancing in the Dark, I'm Goin' Down, Cover Me, etc. You really can't go wrong with this one if you're one for the 80s anthemic sound.

- Hey

This music is for old people.

- can't stop dancing!

i first heard this album when i was 25 years old, and i haven't stopped dancing since!

- Pricey

Okay I have one Question Why on earth is this Album 10.99 when all the other albums are 9.99. That is so unfair I-tunes LOWER the PRICE. I have listened to the tracks they all rock but the price is so not cool for me. I want to buy this album badly.

- Rock and Roll Classic!

Perhaps no album encapsulated the 80s any better than Born in The USA. Think about it, we were coming out of a horibble recession, our last helicopters left Saigon 10 years earlier after a losing a war. American prestige and morale were at an all time nadir. Then Bruce comes up with the chest bumping, thist pumping opening song And the album just took off. Its really a series of of songes about life in America that many mis-interpreted. Born in The Usa was a plea for our homeless vets. Many of the other songs capture the misery of life of living in struggling small town americam (no steel mills, no car factories, no jobs). But The album gained him millions of new fans (including President Robald Reagan who famously mis-interpreted Born in the USA). A great album of the 80's (Rolling Stone voted it # 6 of the 80's and # 85 of all time!). The album produced seven top 10 singles and hundreds of thousands went to see Bruce perform marathon 4 hour concerts at stadiums around the world. You could not turn on the radio in the mid 80's and not hear a song from this album. Just a great memory of the 80's for me personally. But if you love rock, and want to hear an album about the 80's , you could not do any better than buying this entire album for your IPOD.

- Horrible

Horrible

- stops me in my tracks!

This album is the soundtrack of my childhood. Instead of learning 'Baby Beluga', I was listening to 'Downbound Train.' Even as a child I was able to recognize the importance and strength of this album. Every time I hear his guttural voice I can't help but get goosebumps. His perspective of the blue-collar life is the anthem of every working man. Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' is our generation's version of John Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath' and the plight of the everyday man.

- I'm On Fire

What can I say, I love this CD!! Originally I hadn't listened to it all that often, but once I had I started to, I loved it more and more. My favorite songs are "I'm On Fire", "Bobby Jean", and "I'm Goin' Down." "No Surrender" is also amazing, and well worth your money. I know it's tough in this economy (trust me, I'm always broke) but this is definitely a wise investment. "Born in the USA" was always a classic, and I remember going to my first Bruce concert at 10 years old and appreciating it even then. Fantastic CD.

- ....

The boss...enough said

- Born in the USA

The best rock album! Not a dull track on it. I loved it when it came out, bought it on tape, and now I finally have it on my iPod.

- King of Rock

Bruce Springsteen is my favorite artist ever! My mom's obssessed, so I own almost every album he's ever released. Trust me, they're all amazing. One day I went to school listening to Bruce, and one of my friends asked me who the heck he was. I couldn't believe it. They didn't know who the Boss was! Of course, me being me, I had to go around and ask everyone in my class if they knew who he was. Only three people knew him, and only two of the three actually like him and listened to his songs. I was horrified. All of the people who didn't know who he was listen to all the new pop "songs" that are "hip" and "cool". What they don't understand is that it takes absolulty no talent to sing those songs, if you can call it singing. Almost none of the new music stars can actually even remotely sing live, even with computer help. Then there's the Boss. He's absolutely amazing live, better even, and he can move a crowd with his energy. My friends may think I'm not cool because I listen to Bruce, but I don't care. He's my favorite artist, and one of the best, if not the best singer/songwriter of all time. He truly is the King of Rock.

- Wrong release date

This was actually released on June 4th, 1984 not in July as iTunes has posted. This is important to know because Prince's Purple Rain came out in July and knocked Bruce off the Billboard #1 position. Those two albums hold the record for staying in the #1 and #2 position for 24 weeks straight. BITUSA took over the #1 spot again in January of 1985 when Purple Rain slipped to #3. No two albums have had a such a lock on the top 2 spots in the Billboard charts before or since!

- Great album

This is a great album, one of my favorites...this album is how i discovered bruce and it brings back great memories! I highly recomend it

- Yay!!!!!!

I'm happy that ITunes put this guy on. HAOORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- This

Such a classic. Undeniably good, excluding "I'm On Fire". It's too... .. . ugh.... boring.

- Words Can't Describe Its Awesomeness

First off, this is a great album. Heck, all of Springseen's songs are great. I wasn't alive when a lot of the greatest ones were made, but I was literally raised on Springsteen. My parent were, are, and always will be the biggest Springsteen fans alive, and by the time I was two, 'Born in the USA' was my favorite song. I knew 'Broos Stringbean' before I could walk and talk, and man I'm glad for that. Great songs, great rythm, and a great guy.

- The Boss!

As a mid-forties male, I had considered myself a casual Boss fan, sticking to the more popular of his songs. Last week I saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in concert for the first time and all I can say is "Wow"!! I now know why there are legions of Bruce fans around the world. The show lasted 3 1/2 hours and there was no breaks taken. The encore itself lasted an hour. I now have to make up for 20 years of ignorence because I'm now hooked on the Boss' music!

- Omg

I started listening to Bruce Springsteen (a.k.a. The Boss) before I was born back in 1985! (if you catch my drift.) This guy RULES!!!!

- could not agree with the bus story more

Bruce Springsteen is the best rock artist around. I am also thirteen and all my friends either dont know him or hate him. He is amazing!! BUYY!!!!

- One of Bruce's Best.

This is no doubt one of Bruce's best. I mean how many of you guys have gotten drunk at a bar. Whenever "Glory Days" played, a whole group of you did a mass sing along to it. That song is infectious. And then, of course, you jammed to "Dancing In The Dark". Those were fun songs.

- The Boss

The boss ROX!!!!!!!

- Heaven like

My Hometown and I'm On Fire pure genius your the man Bruce :)

- BRUCE IS DA MAN

yeah, this is the best music ever. end of story.

- The boss rules

I am a 15 year old kid who has been listen to bruce my whole life, i have seen him live so many times i cant even count them anymore, if you think hes to old or his music is boring your crazy he is the greatest rock and roll artist of all time and in my mind there will never be another bruce springsteen

- Child Raised on Bruce

Being the child of two fans of The Boss, I was raised on this music. I think he's great and it's awesome that he's still able to do it since he is getting older. I am currently in college in PA, but was born and raise in Jersey, and I always feel at home whenever I hear a Bruce song, or as my mom calls it, "Bruce Juice"

- yeah i dont listen to the music but his kids are cool

lol i know his kids i go to school with them and sam (his son) taught me about acting and his oldest wuz my friends sisters best friend. i see bruce springsteen every single day he drives an escelade. i wave at him and he waves back. cool, huh?

- Now and Then

Some of my fondest memories when I was a kid are of listening to my dad's "Born in the U.S.A." record on the old record player I loved it then and I love it now. That is some good music.
