I too questioned my daughters choice when she introduced me, mind you she was 6 at the time and she was googling for Mickey Mouse. She loved Modest Mouse, her proud Dad and his daughter still listen to this album 4 years later. Buy it. You'll like it.

When I first heard this c.d I wasn't sure if I liked it, but after buying it and listening to it excessively I became very addicted to Modest Mouse's individual sound. Isaac Brock almost cute lisp makes each song a wonder to listen to. I particually liked the smooth sound of Missed the Boat. Defintly Suggest adding this c.d to your collection

this album is one of the best ive ever heard, all the songs flow togther within the album, almost as if it were telling a story (but all of modest mouse' songs seem to be about sinking). it is a very upbeat album at the beginning, and the last few songs are slower pased more emotional lyrics. the incorporation of the strings in modest mouses songs was one of the best decisions they have made in the music area. over all, great album i recommend for everyone!

Look,almost all of music criticism is either opinion and or experience, but from my perspective , this is not the Modest Mouse sound I enjoy. Great , I am happy for all of you who love it and are discovering MM, and I had good hopes when Johnny Marr was joining the band for a bit, but it just lacks something for me. There is no " Lives" on this, nor "Third Planet" or anything that is as tripped-out. Say what you will , but I don't think this is a masterpiece at all or anything superlative you want to stick on to it. It's okay. Not their best, and as someone already wrote, it's better than " Good News.." but that's about it. A big let down to many.

This is hands down my favorite song in this album. I could listen to this song over and over. I have the lyrics memorized in my head. Good job Modest Mouse, another great song!!

I was sceptical about this album at first becuase few of my friends were dising this album becuase it wasn't like the past albums, but I fell in love with Dashboard. Can't get it out of my head, humming to it all the time cuase its that good.

Now every single one of Modest Mouse's albums has something to offer. We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank has a "new" vibe. Their "Dashboard" is what sank my teeth into them, but taking the time to listen to the rest of the album has given me a chance to bite it off and crave more. March Into the Sea has a sense of starting something new, while Invisible has a tone that illustrates where it all ends, but obviously their work doesn't end right there! Fire It Up is very mellow, and Florida is up-beat. Creative lyrics from Parting of the Sensory and Education are what really take the cake. It has quiet, somewhat melancholy twist with Little Motel, only to have Spitting Venom and Dashboard bring out a sense of how things aren't that bad. If Modest Mouse is "changing" then so be it, because I like the new stuff along with the old stuff.

This album is perhaps the revolution in modest mouse's sound style. Although "Missed the Boat" and "Little motel" are thier biggest songs in years, some songs are just plain annoying. March into the sea? 2000's The moon and Antartica is a much better album than this and perhaps so is Good News for people who love Bad News. Don't Mistake This is a very good album. Especially sense they have a few (dare I say) sad songs with a more soft element. Something I have never seen from Modest Mouse Before. But, 5 stars? Maybe not.

I have never heard this album but this little boy that lives across the street from me, his uncle is in this band. Isn't it a small world?

to put it short, modest mouse is my favorite band ever... y'alls music has been with me since I was in highschool and it helped me through a lot of stuff... I listen to the music every day its all great, the new stuff amazing but my favorite is the first three albums, buy them. they are original and Issac is the best lyrisist of our Genoration, in my opinion. also, the song writing is brilliant and the sound is to... I couldn't live in the world of music without this.

I don't know why people complain about the evolution of sound in Modest Mouse's work. I started listening to them at the release of The Lonesome Crowded West, and I went back and bought the previous works as well. I've cherished every nuance of their sound, and I although I did have particular favorites in "Dramamine", "Doing the Cockroach", and "Trailer Trash", I also had newer favorites, such as "The Whale Song" (a technical later release than We Were Dead, but made around the same time), "Bukowski", and "Bury Me With It". I can't say why Modest Mouse is changing, but I also can't say that I resent their change.

Overall ok but the best song by far is spitting venom long but totally worth it

The first song i ever heard by modest mouse was float on. Then i listened to this album. Dashboard is a really catchy fun song. Missed the boat is also a great song. But i think the best song is steam engenius. All of the songs are good so just buy the album and float on. i may not agree with isaac brock's religious views either but its his opinion. best band ever.

I love this album, but it's clearley not theyre best. The album contains alotta killer tracks like March into the Sea, Little Motel, Parting of the Sensory, Fly Trapped in a Jar,and Spitting Venom...the other tracks are good too but arent as great as the ones previously listed. There is one song I do not like at all that song is Florida...it's too "pop"-ish for me.

I love almost every song on it and the songs that I like most change with each subsequent listening. While I'm not a MM oldie, I'd recommend this album to anyone with ears.

this album is truly fantastic for Modest Mouse lovers, don't let any piece of the 'new' band fool you, just give it an open heart and your ears will delight.

As a die-hard fan of Modest Mouse, old and new, I am a rarity. I disagree with fans who shun MM's new sound; the band is adapting to new times, and they are wearing their success well. Isaac Brock has really grown up, and it shows in every aspect of his work, the band's live shows included. Modest Mouse's older cuts are certainly to be remembered, but I, for one, welcome their new approach with open arms. It is bold, honest, and progressive, just as their music always has been.

I'm not here to down this album by any means. If anything they are a victim of their previous masterpieces. Fairly good music but unfortunately this album in which I so highly anticipated what not so much a let down but just different. I respect a band's decision to evolve but I will always be partial to long drive, lonesome crowded, and moon/antartica. Not surprising however as most truly great artists' albums are usually captured within their first releases to no fault of their own. The Beatles are of course the exception that makes it the rule

Sorry to all you "long time fans" of MM, but to say the album isn't as good, or not up to par, is crazy. You obviously aren't that big of a fan of the band then, and don't appreciate bands maturing and evolving their music. It's still catchy, quirky music that hits hard and is so delightful. But I guess that just isn't good enough for some people. Album is legit, own it.

This album has really deep lyrics and beautiful music to go with them. Spitting Venom is the most musical and well-developed song in the album. Once again, Mouse put out a few very interesting songs like Fly Trapped in a Jar that can be hard to listen to. However, songs like Florida, Little Motel, and People as Places as People make the album one of their best.

This is a fantastic album! It deserves way more fame!!!

its just wrong

This album really isn't that bad as long as you don't compare it to The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica. Musically, it is def stronger than most of Good News. I saw them play at the electric factory in philly on March, 21. Damn. after that i can def say this is my favorite band. What an amazing show. The greatest part about that show is that you could tell Modest Mouse hasn't lost its roots like everyone claims they have. They played all the classics, opening with dramamine and encoring with night on the sun and jesus christ was an only child with everything amazing in between. They only played 4 songs from this album. The most enlightening part, it was evident they just werent having fun performing "dashboard" compared to the masterpieces. Spitting Venom and Parting of the Sensory are def standouts on We Were Dead and you could tell that they enjoyed playing these. (Spitting venom was like 20 mins long. awesome.) This album isnt terrible, just know the Mouse still loves where they came from and this is just some phase to gain some bills before they release another masterpiece.

What can I say? The entire album is fantastic. Start to finish. If you're a person who listens to music for emotional feel or to relate the lyrics and sounds to your own life, then this album is a must. I know some people prefer the older stuff, but Modest Mouse since Moon and Antarctica have made albums that relate to all music lovers not just those who enjoy the indie sound. That said there may not be a better lyricist in music today than Isaac Brock. His ability to come up with the metaphors he comes up with actually leaves me envious. As musicians you'd be hard pressed to find a more diverse band than Modest Mouse. Accordians, keyboards, trumpets, violins, banjos, and to top it off the band employs two fantastic drummers/percussionists. As for this album in particular, the right away stand outs to most newbies to the mouse will be Dashboard, Fire it Up, Missed the Boat, We've Got Everything, and Little Motel. You might get a little freaked out with March to Sea if you're new to the band. Kind of song you don't wanna play around your friends. But it'll grow on you. Florida and Invisible kind of go hand in hand to me. Heavier titles. Parting of the Sensory will have you stomping on your brake pedal when it gets funky, you've been warned! The epic song in this album to me is Spitting Venom. An 8 minute song about a bad relationship that goes from this sort of folk thing to a heart felt ballad featuring Tom Peloso doing a trumpet piece that for some reason makes my heart kind of skip a little. I think everyone can relate to the lyrics in this song. Again great album. Worth double the price.

agree with gommer, albums a pleaser for more mainstream listeners, older albums convey their more unique, creative style. If you like modest mouse, please listen to their older albums as well.

Spitting Venom, Parting of the Sensory, and March into the Sea are three of the strongest songs in the MM catalog, but the rest of the album is nothing special. Dashboard is a desperate attempt at matching the success of Float On. They could have cut out the last two songs entirely; People As Places As People is bland and Invisible is one of the least satisfying album closers I've ever heard. Fly Trapped in A Jar and Steam Engenius border on confusing. Stick to their previous releases. They're far more enjoyable.

No matter what people say, this album is great! I can listen to it all the way through and not be afraid to play it in the car with my friends. Only a few songs from the older albums are bareable (Fact). those songs were recorded more than ten years ago, and it is obvious that their sound is going to change. In the wise words of Broc himself... "F*uck the old Sh!t"

This is a great album. It's quite complex and fleshes out a lot of those ideas in the back of your mind that you never really bring up with others. This album is not PERFECT by any sense of the word. While I love the diversity in the songs, I felt that it was an album that did not know what it wanted to be. Songs can jump from upbeat and in your face like Dashboard, and then mellow down to the progressive, heartbreaking slow tempo of Little Motel. BOTH OF THESE ARE GREAT SONGS. They ALL are. I've just been raised on the mentallity that albums are straightforward. This wasn't, it takes the listener's intelligence for granted, (considering that they MUST be intelligent to buy such a perfect album), and throws a lot of complex messages and ideas into that listener's face, just maybe not of the same caliber of The Moon and Antarctica's messages. I just thought the pacing was just a wee bit unorthodox, but that isn't really a negative on their part. I just wasn't ready for it on my first listen through. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank needs to be bought. BUY IT

They were finished before they even started. There comes a time when artists run out of stuff to say, both lyrically and musically. That struggle played out on the previous record - some good tunes, some truly awful ones, and some "meh whatever" ones. But on this record, oh dear, Modest Mouse just vomits all over the place.

I love just about anything Modest Mouse puts out. Definitely a great band. I would love to see another album.

these guys are pure genius. they have a different tone than other people. they write songs about stuff that no one else writes about. they do the unexpected, like in the Little Motel guitar solo. right in the middle of the solo he starts bending the strings to create that distinct modest mouse sound. i love it. Oh, and in Spitting Venom. that's awesome. they combine 2 different songs to create a masterpiece! (If you has no idea of what i'm talking about, then BUY THIS ALBUM!) You WILL NOT regret it!!

While old fans might bicker and complain that Modest Mouse has sold out, this is seriously not the case. As a resident of probably one of the most mainstream states out there (Florida), I have not even HEARD of Modest Mouse until it showed up on my Pandora station, and boy am I glad it did. For new fans of MM, like myself, this album is a great way to start. It sounds comfortable without trying to sound too indie (unlike Neutral Milk Hotel or the Mountain Goats) and yet is just indie enough to spark a curiosity about indie music, and We Missed The Boat does an amazing job about it. Isaac Brock's voice is maniacal and cackling is some places, and soothing and wavering in others, and the musicianship is just phenomenal. For new fans that are sick and tired of the likes of Ke$ha and Nickelback, this is a great places to start.

The Modest Mouse group has made another amazing album. For all the new fans out there i would defidently recomend the song Dashboard, Invisible, and Parting of the Sensory.

Again, just because it sounds good doesn't mean they're selling out.

Modest Mouse practically ruined themselves with this album, there older stuff ( anything before this album ) was and is great. They finally started writing music not to voice their anger and hilarity toward the world, but instead only to make money off everyone out in the world who don't listen to the lyrics. Good job Modest Mouse you guys created a pop album you're rich and good job hurting your old and faithful fans to get the dumb deaf new ones. We still have faith though maybe we're the dumb ones though their new singles are in the right direction.

Don't get me wrong, the new stuff is great. All bands have a right to take their music in a different direction. Johnny Marr was a good addition to the band and I think that their new sound has some of the old Modest Mouse in it - especially in Steam Engenius. But why ar e some of the old albums gone?!?! Where are The Fruit That Ate Itself and Sad Sappy Sucker? Those two albums were a great beginning to a great band. I am really sad to see them off itunes because their old stuff was just as good, if not better and a tad more original than their new stuff. I really hope those albums get put back on - we can't forget where Modest Mouse came from.

I don't understand why this album wasn't reviewed very well. Though my favorite Modest Mouse album is "The Moon & Antarctica", this album is right up there next to it. "Dashboard" is a great track as is "Missed the Boat" and "We've Got Everything" and "Fire it Up". This cd isn't as great as I thought but I still loved it. For first time listeners, I would reccomend this hands down.

Not the most creative band right now, not the most danceable, you won't be whistling their cuts nor are they the most meaningful lyric writers....but Modest Mouse has my vote for the band I would most like to invite to dinner. This CD gushes with personality. Unfettered energy and moods sweep every song. I'm tired of the word "Quirky" but OK it fits MM. They are the most listenable group of the past couple years and this CD is representative of the peak of their art.

I love this album. I love Modest Mouse. I love Isaac and his banjo! I can't wait for their EP to come out 'cause "King Rat" is one of my favorite songs now!

To keep this review quick and to-the-point: compared to the rest of M.M.'s work, "We Were Dead...", along with "Good News...", has a much more upbeat style of both lyrics and music. Although their older music was more obscure and existential, this album could be just as hard hitting (as it is to me). These songs are happier and less bring-me-down. As I see it, Brock has taken a more godly and forgiving outlook on life. There is no doubt that M.M.'s style is drastically changing, but if it gives the band the recognition that it deserves without sacrificing message or quality, I give them the go. I love this new style, and I pray that Brock could influence his audience to live more like "Fire it Up" from "We Were Dead..." rather than "Polar Opposites" from "The Lonesome...".

If "This is a Long Drive", "Lonesome Crowded" & "Building Nothing" are your albums you are gonna be disappointed. If you even like "The Fruit That Ate Itself", don't even bother and just indulge in the past. I understand people grow & age & can't stay the same forever (I certainly don't) but that doesn't mean you have to blindly follow a band that moved in a different direction or that you can't one day come back. I didn't even get into Modest Mouse until 2008ish & can easily see it is not an "unable to like new music" or "can't like a band after commercial success" thing when the long time fans are low rating this. This album just doesn't rip you apart in the same way. I recommend trying Ugly Cassanova instead if you are in need of a fix (Isaac Brock's side project). Luckily the old Modest Mouse albums still sound like they'd break ground as new releases today

I could never get into Modest Mouse before; I thought they were really overrated. This: I love. So if you liked Modest Mouse in the 90s, move along. If you like newer indie bands (like Franz Ferdinand) you may enjoy this.
