Britney Spears - Toxic

Toxic by Britney Spears Song Info

"Toxic" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album "In the Zone". It was released on January 12, 2004, by Jive Records as the second single from the album. Co-written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant, the song was initially offered to Kylie Minogue, but she rejected it. Spears has named "Toxic" as her favorite song from her career, and originally had to convince her record label to release it as a single. "Toxic" is a dance-pop song with influences of electropop and bhangra music, that features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and surf guitar. It is accompanied by high-pitched strings and breathy vocals. Its lyrics refer to being addicted to a lover. The song was well received by critics, who deemed it as the strongest track of In the Zone, while praising its hook and chorus. "Toxic" attained worldwide success, reaching the top-five in fifteen countries, while topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became her first single to peak inside the top ten in almost four years. The accompanying music video for the song was directed by Joseph Kahn and features references to Blade Runner, The Seven Year Itch and the films of John Woo. It portrays Spears as a secret agent in the search of a vial of green liquid. After she steals it, she enters an apartment and poisons her unfaithful boyfriend. The video also includes interspersed scenes of Spears naked with diamonds over her body. After Janet Jackson's Superbowl incident, the video was considered too racy for MTV and was moved to late-night programming. Spears has performed "Toxic" in a number of live appearances, including the 2004 NRJ Music Awards and in three of her concert tours. It was the opening number of The Onyx Hotel Tour (2004), where she sang atop of a bus wearing a black catsuit; Spears also performed remixed versions of the song at The Circus Starring Britney Spears (2009) and the Femme Fatale Tour (2011). "Toxic" has been covered by artists such as Mark Ronson, Yael Naïm and A Static Lullaby, and in television series Glee. The song has also appeared in feature films such as Knocked Up, You Again and television series Doctor Who. "Toxic" won Spears her first Grammy at the 2005 ceremony in the category of Best Dance Recording, while gaining her credibility amongst critics. The song has been included in lists by Pitchfork, NME and Rolling Stone as one of the best songs of the decade. It has been noted for redefining the sound of dance-pop music. "Toxic" is also considered one of the defining songs for Spears. The music video is also known for showing Spears for the first time as a confident adult woman, comfortable with her own sexuality. "Toxic" was written by Cathy Dennis, Henrik Jonback and by Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg from Bloodshy & Avant, while produced by the latter two.[1] The song was originally offered to Kylie Minogue for her 2003 studio album Body Language, but she rejected it. Minogue later commented, "I wasn't at all angry when it worked for her. It's like the fish that got away. You just have to accept it."[2] "Toxic" was recorded at Murlyn Studios in Stockholm, Sweden and Record Plant in Hollywood, California. The song was later mixed by Niklas Flyckt at Khabang Studios in Stockholm.[1] In December 2003, it was announced that after trying to choose between "(I Got That) Boom Boom" and "Outrageous" to be second single from In the Zone, Spears had selected "Toxic" instead.[3] She described it as "an upbeat song. It's really different, that's why I like it so much."[4] In May 2010, Spears revealed through her Twitter account that "Toxic" was her favorite song from her catalogue.[5] "Toxic" is a dance-pop song with elements of electropop and bhangra music.[6][7] It features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers, strings and surf guitar, that according to Caryn Ganz of Spin, "warps and struts like it’s been fed into the Matrix." The music was also compared to the soundtrack of the James Bond film series.[8] "Toxic"'s hook samples a portion of "Tere Mere Beech Mein", from the soundtrack of the 1981 Hindi film Ek Duje Ke Liye.[9] Spence D. of IGN described the song as a mix of "swirling, high-pitched faux strings, and Brit's breathy vocal pulse".[10] According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by EMI Music Publishing, "Toxic" is composed in the key of E♭ major, with a tempo of 144 beats per minute. Spears's vocal range spans from the high-tone of G3 to the low-tone of F5.[11] Lyrically, "Toxic" talks about being addicted to a lover.[12] Spears refers to her addiction in the lyrics "Too high / Can't come down / It's in my head spinning round and round." "Toxic" ends with an outro in which Spears sings the lines, "Intoxicate me now / With your lovin' now / I think I'm ready now."[13] Nick Southall of Stylus Magazine said the lyrics made Spears sound afraid of sex.[14]

I consider myself an enormous Britney Spears fan, so I know what I'm saying when I say that this is without a doubt the greatest album by Britney. I love that she did so much writing on it, and the beats are out of this world! Toxic is definitely the song that stands out the most. It's such a catchy song! Other stand outs are Me Against The Music, Brave New Girl, Touch of My Hand, (I Got That) Boom Boom, and Everytime. If you're a true Britney Spears fan, then you should run out to the nearest store with CDs, and buy this album, or buy it on ITunes! ;)

- Britney's Most Accomplished Work

I consider myself a sort of connoisseur of pop music, and I love me some Britney Spears. I grew up on this girl like most of us nineties kids. In The Zone was a pivotal album for Spears. This is the record that marks the end of her days as a sexualized lollita, and the beginning of her reign as the industry's most sought after, sexually powerful woman. She has jettisoned the euro-pop romp of her musical creator Max Martin in favor of a variety of dance and hip hop producers whose skill is augmented by Britney's versatile voice. 1). Me Against The Music - This song is the album opener and lead single. It is fantastic as both of those things. It has its heart in the clubs, and it does its job of properly signalling an album full of club-ready music. Of course Madonna appears to pass the torch of pop queendom to its rightful heir. The track moves quickly and effortlessly, and the chorus is a monster. 5/5 2). I Got That Boom Boom - This track is a nice blend of southern hip hop and pop. The beat is really nice, and lends the song a moodiness. It would have made a nice single. Britney's voice is totally sexy as well. The track can grow tiresome at almost five minutes in length, so it is best enjoyed in moderation. 4/5 3). Showdown - This song may take many listens to appreciate. At first listen, it may seem like a filler track, but Bloodshy & Avant's clever production touches make up for the chorus, which - while catchy - is not memorable. The mood of this song: hot. 4/5 4). Breathe On Me - This track would have made a monster (and very controversial) single. If sex bothers you, block out the lyrics and listen to Britney coo you into a different and very sensual world. The chorus is an absolute blast off taking listeners out of this universe. The beat and throbbing bass line are top notch, thanks to Mark Taylor. This is also the only song I know of that has its very own - uh - climax. 5/5 5). Early Mornin' - This is Britney's collaboration with Moby, and while it is not single worthy, it is artistically acccomplished. It plays as sort of a blury morning after a hard night of "Breathe On Me" styled sex. It's throbbing bass line is insanely catchy, yet oddly relaxing. 4/5 6). Toxic - Now obviously this is the best song on the entire record. I mean come on - this is probably the best pop song of the past decade. This Bloodshy & Avant produced track is so innovative. It really is nothing like any other pop artist has ever done. The skittering glissandos, the high pitched hook, the SICK breakdown - what could be better? The instrumentation is varied and Britney's voice is at its sexiest. Pure pop perfection. 5/5 7). Outrgaeous - This song is the sole reason why I own a trench coat, and you will know why when you hear the song's bridge. Perhaps it isn't quite single worthy, but it is definitely a good rump shaker of a song that is little more than an ode to living fabulously in your trench coat and underwear. The beat is exotic, almost middle-eastern in style. If Britney's low, breathy voice doesn't entice you to wear a trench coat over nothing but your underwear - then it must be me who has a problem. This is a good song. 4/5 8). Touch Of My Hand - The song is beautiful. Again, if sex bothers you, block out the lyrics even though they are exceptionally well written. Musically, this song has a beautiful soundscape. It sounds sort of like an electro tinged relaxation track you would hear in an asain bathouse. The chorus is pure bliss. 5/5 9). The Hook Up - This song is my least favorite. It could have been easily replaced by any of the unreleased tracks from her recording sessions (like the phenomenal Over To You Now, or the Thriller-esque Girls and Boys). It is a nice track with an interesting caribbean flavor. 3/5 10). Shadow - Here we have the first ballad on the record. Usually pop ballads from teen idols are described as sappy and corny, but this is decidedly different. It is of course electronic, like the rest of the album, but it is soothing. It is a melancholly ode to how reminders of love can still linger even when it is long gone. The chorus is sweeping in a style reminiscent of Whtiney Houston. Her voice is showcased nicely, and the lyrics are well written. 5/5 11). Brave New Girl - This is the girly anthem that is usually present on any given Spears album. It is a good song, like the rest of the batch, but it is again another one that could have been easily replaced with worthier material. It still has a catchy tune. 3/5 12). Everytime - Finally we close with Britney's most heartfelt, most mature, and most artistically accomplished track of the album - maybe her whole career. Broken hearted lyrics wirrten by Spears are set to simple piano chords again composed by Spears. Possibly the best ballad I've heard from a pop star such as her. Her soft voice sounds smooth and angelic. It is a real gem, and a relaxing close to a great album. Spears is finally a woman, and womanhood suits her very, very well. Enjoy this sexy, sleek, throbbing album and let Britney work her magic.

- In the Zone by Britney Spears

My top 4 favorite songs from her 2003 album by Britney Spears: 1. Me Against the Music feat. Madonna 2. Toxic 3. Outrageous 4. Everytime

- Music

Let's be honest Brittney Spears is just an autotuned drug addicted who can't sing. People like Michael Jackson, Whittney Huston, Beyonce, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Eminem make the music world legendary. People like Brittney Spears, Justin Beiber, Rebbeca Black, and Ke$ha crap on it. The only song of Brittney Spears that I can tolerate is Toxic because of the beats. But I do respect her and every artist for trying to make music. I appogize if this offeneds anyone but it's just my personal oppinion.

- Awesome!
