- We've come a long way, but we went no where

This EP consists of a collection of b-sides and unreleased songs from the Good News For People Who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank days. Each song has been previously released either as a special bonus track to one of the two albums or as a single leading up to the release of the EP. It starts out with “Satellite Skin,” a very classic rock-sounding song with verse-chorus progression, and ends on my personal favorite, “I've Got It All (Most).” The best part about this album is that it showcases all of the abilities and styles that we have come to love from Modest Mouse. It covers all the bases, from catchy rock jams to epic, chilly dark songs reminiscent of The Moon & Antarctica days (“The Whale Song”), from catchy banjo tunes (“Autumn Beds”) to a bluesy horn tracks (“Perpetual Motion Machine”). The lyrics are all very front man and Isaac Brock-esque, dealing with elements about life and the world around us. You can hear older Modest Mouse mannerisms and the newer territory covered by their latest releases. Overall, this EP is not as impressive as their other releases and may seem to be all over the place, but that's what it's supposed to be: a collection of b-sides, not a cohesive album. It's very satisfying and there's something for everyone.

- theyre back

With Good new for People Who love Bad News, Modest mouse kin of took a turn in thier music style. The moon and Antartica was hands down thier best album. However, in thier more new albums they would have some songs I just didn't like. We were Dead before the ship even sank was a long way from dreamine and polar opposites. But I still loved it despite those few little crap songs. This album Alomost feels like a mix between the old modest mouse and the more modern modest mouse. Just without a bunch of tracks that are just crap. Its an album with a few good songs i actually want to hear. So i give it Five stars

- No worries

Modest Mouse is one of the best and most innovative bands out there, and while this is by no means their best work, that souldnt scare anyone because it is just the b-sides of WWDBTSES and GN4PWLBN. MODEST MOUSE ROCKS.

- even the mediocre of modest mouse suceeds

Modest Mouse is amazing and has always been. This album doesn't match up to some of my favorites like "Parting of the Sensory" etc... but a decent cd.

- Must buy!!

Incredible album. Autumn beds is an excellent banjo song. Satellite skin is amazing. Guilty Cocker Spaniels has amazing lyrics. Whale song has power and is a great instrumental song. The best song on the whole album is king rat EXCELLENT from the worlds greatest band. MUST MUST buy

- Alright

I wasn't to impressed but i do really like whale song. it sounds like their older stuff which i am a bigger fan of by far. but definately not a bad ep.

- Pretty Damn Good

Another great EP from the best band in the world (in my opinion). I still miss old MM and didnt expect this EP to be that way since its just unused songs from their last two albums. Its to bad these songs weren't on those albums though because they are all really good songs. Especially the B-Sides that appeared on the singles that followed up to this release such as the Satelite Skin and Autmn Beds singles. Whale Somg is proabably my favorite song from this collection. I cant wait to see what these guys do next. If you like MM old or new this is a great collection of songs. Just get it.

- Average

Cant we go back to the 1997-2004 Modest Mouse?

- as far as this band has come from "sad sappy sucker" they have improved incredibly!!

i have met some people who cannot stand this band which blows my mind!!! just keep the albums coming on guys!

- Buy it

It's not their greatest album ever, but it's definately worth the price. Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands, and i'd say this is still a great addition. If you're a Modest Mouse fan, you'll definately like it, if you think they're just okay, it's still worth checking into.

- garabage

let me tell you something........when you try to sound folk/country and your not....not a good idea

- Keepin' It Going

I've been a fan of Modest Mouse for a while now; their songs Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty drew me in right away. They've always had a way with the lyrics that seems to make sense in a crazy, almost whimsical way, and the music is actually music! No incessant, almost annoying beat like most of today’s songs. They use actual instruments and create AMAZING sounds. Every song on their albums has beat and meaning behind it. No One’s First, and You’re Next is no different. Especially with the new music video for King Rat finished in memory of the director who started it: Heath Ledger.

- Great stuff

Right when I started to think MM was going too mainstream to please the masses, they release these songs with the classic experimental sounds. "King Rat" is a great example of how MM meshes instruments together with the truly unique voice of Isaac Brock. I always look forward to hearing new material from this group and they definitely do not disappoint with these tracks.

- out with the new...

ive been a big modest mouse fan for a long time now, and I was very concerned after the release of their last album, because they didnt sound like the modest mouse id came to love, but this album sounds like a return to their roots, and i can say that its really good to hear such a talented band return to their roots.

- rating unknown?? ------ Where is the video to match this article?

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock revealed in a 2007 interview that his band was working on a video with actor Heath Ledger for 'King Rat,' a song that didn't make the cut on their 2007's LP 'We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.' "Heath and I have a mutual friend and when we were in Australia, my fiancé and some of us in the band went out on a boat with him and his family and friends, and talked about the idea," Brock said at the time. "He's got a video production company and was interested in working on something. We were talking back and forth for a while. The idea seemed sort of dropped, but then he just sent me an email saying that he wanted to do it." That video never saw the light of day, following Ledger's death in January 2008. Until now. Co-directed and illustrator Daniel Auber jumped in to finish the video, with animation by Norris Houk and Jade Taglioli. Sara Cline of the Masses, the production company where Ledger was a partner, produced. The clip is making its debut on Tuesday, as the song, 'King Rat' also makes its debut on Modest Mouse's latest, 'No One's First, and You're Next.' Proceeds from iTunes sales of the video are being donated to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society during the first month of release. Sea Shepherd is "committed to ending the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species," according to a press release. I WOULD LOVE TO SUPPORT HEATH, AND THE SEA SHEPARD..............

- Going Back?

It's about time. Even though these are b sides, they sound more like old Modest Mouse. Satellite skin is probably the least intriguing song on the collection. It gradually progresses and improves the farther in you go. A hopeful preview to the sound of the next album

- Good

This EP was good but wasn't Modest Mouse best work... I just wish they were a Power Trio again... But Johnny Marr is cool!!!

- Thanks For The B-Sides!

Big ups to Modest Mouse for regularly gathering up those b-sides and releasing them on a single disc, as they have done throughout their career. If you can stand the wait for some pretty decent music from a great band, you can save yourself the hassle & expense of chasing down all those singles! This is good stuff here, and while Autumn Beds, The Whale Song and Perpetual Motion Machine are probably my favorites, if you're a fan of MM, you'll want all of these.

- awesome stuff!

Modest Mouse are excellent. Always coming out with great music!

- MM For Life

MM is one of the greatest band there is right now. I only wish that more people would know about them. The music in this album deffinately sounds like some of their older stuff which is their best stuff. Definately get this album 5 stars!

- Okay

Too the people who think this is new modest mouse.... It's NOT! it's the stuff they recored before but never put on the album, ecept I've got it all.... I've had that song forever, I purchased the album good news for anyone who loves bad news, and that song was on it!

- niiice

even their b sides are painfully beautiful.

- Modest Mouse strikes again

this album is really good, the best song in my opinion is satellite skin, but modest mouse come back with an album with great songs. 5 stars.

- finally!

its about time this EP came out! the music is fantastic, and catchy, as usual.

- very good

whats with these 1 star rattings all of a sudden , very good cd , its a mix of there older stuff and new stuff. and its not really that much money to pick up either. if your a fan of mm than pick this up. if your one of those ppl who can't accept change than you might not like this.

- No No No!

Modest Mouse- The best alternative band of my time. This album, within 45 seconds of listening to it, made me want to cry. Everything that made this band great, with a musical style so unique, was shattered. If you love Modest Mouse and have heard (and worshipped) any of their previous albums, DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM. Don't even listen to it...you will be sorely disappointed.

- I Love It!!!!!

Congratu-freakin-lations Modest Mouse another awesome album!

- slight disappointment

To be honest I had wished that this album would be anything close to lonesome crouded west, in my opinion their best album. not saying i didnt like the rest, I have loved all of their albums, but the fact of the matter is I think this one fell short. Heres a few of my reasons... 1. To start with they only have 7 'new' songs considering 'Ive got it all (most)' is an old song they just decided to slap on the album. 2. This one just seems more wordy and less like Issac had the emotions he usually brought into his songs. 3. Usually MM has a few faster... more loose sounding tracks somewhere on the album... this one to me feels like it has none. All said, take this with a slight grain of salt, I have just bought the album and went through the songs only once, and generaly modest mouse is the kind of band you have to listen to their songs a few times to appriciate them. But like I said, just got it and decided after hearing it I had to write a review... honestly this is one album I am suprised about. P.S. I did like satellite skin.

- No One's First, And You're Next: B+

Modest Mouse has had a small string of Alt hits, 'Float On', 'Dashboard', '3rd Planet', the list goes on. If you liked those songs then cahnces are, you're gonna like this EP also. Here's my Track-By-Track Review: #1 Satillite Skin: A great 1st single, got me hooked for the others. They also did great when they performed this on Letterman. 4.75 / 5 #2 Guilty Cocker Spaniels: Awesome song title, compelling lyrics. 4.5 / 5 #3 Autumn Beds: Great banjo. 4.75 / 5 #4 The Whale Song: 4.25 / 5 #5 Perpetual Motion Machine: Weirdly amazing. Best cut off the EP. 5 / 5 #6 History Sticks To Your Feet: 4 / 5 #7 King Rat: 4 / 5 #8 I've Got It All (Most): 4.25 / 5 Grade: B+ Essential Tracks: Perpetual Motion Machine, Satellite Skin, Autumn Beds Entertainment Weekly: B

- Another great album from Modest Mouse

To any alternative fan or longtime Modest Mouse fan this is a must buy. The only disappointing song on the album is Perpetual Motion Machine, but all the rest are truly amazing and catchy. I'd go as far to say that The Whale Song is the best song the band has produced since Dramamine, it's also very Mechanical Birds'ish.

- you should expect nothing less.

coming from a truly unique band, modest mouse's new EP only lives up to the hype it has produced. I have always been a fan of modest mouse and this EP does their reputation justice. Most of these songs seem to start out somewhat "calmer" and more in control than most of their older work, but no worries, the beautiful chaos MM is notorious for comes out throughout each track. Loyal MM fans will not be dissapoined. If you are just looking for something interesting and new to listen to, proceed with caution and an open mind. MM is definitely not your typical "alternative" band. If the 9$ or whatever is just too much for you i would suggest buying "King Rat", which is by far the best song on the EP and a fairly good representation of MM's general direction.

- They Do Not Disappoint

The thing about Modest Mouse is, whatever you think they are going to do next, they won't do. They always find a way to surprise their loyal fans without being disappointing. And this EP is just that. Featuring 8 songs left off of their last 2 albums, No One's First and You're Next will satisfy every MM fan. Chances are if you aren't a MM fan, you won't like it. But in the end, with songs like 'King Rat' and 'The Whale Song," this is a must have for any MM fan and shows that Modest Mouse started at their peak back in 1993, and have never left it.

- About Time, Keep Going

This is awesome. More Modest Mouse. Yay!I happy again.

- katkatwink

dude i can't even believe it. modest mouse is back!!! whooo!!!!!!!!!!!

- great album

ive been waiting a long time for modest mouse to make a new album and now its here it was totally worth it to favorite songs from this album guilty cocker spaniels the whale song King Rat

- Great Album

Most of the negative reviews are from hardcore Modest Mouse that love their older style of music. I think their more recent albums are a change in their music. Every song on this album is a great mix between the old and new Modest Mouse. It has the newer, edgier vocals, with the older quircky guitar/drum rythms...LOVE IT!

- No One's First, and Your'e Next

This is an excellent album, it shows that modest still has their musical talent, it may sound weird, but Issac's lyrics are deep. Beautifully done...

- Listen to early Mouse

This album is the epitome of mediocrity, especially compared to early Modest Mouse. Back in the day this group was cranking out aggressive music and meanigful lyrics that featured some pretty sick, uniquely twangy guitar. The band has evolved overtime into what it is now an overly poppy sounding, depressingly standard alternative band. The band's crossover to a major record label dragged them from the underground indie-rock scene of the 90s to Alternative Wasteland. Modest Mouse has officially left behind the sound which set them apart and from which they derived all of their appeal. I hope everyone who reads this will go listen to The Lonesome Crowded West and marvel at what once was musical brilliance.

- Pretty Good

Well, the album's okay. It's true, they're taking some steps in the right direction back to their older stuff with a pretty goid mix of their newer stuff. It's a great album. But coming from Modest Mouse, I'd only say it's okay. I just miss Building Nothing Out of Something and This Is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Talk About. "King Rat" is a great song though. Still, I'd say they're taking good steps, becoming more mainstream to gain more fans, but without acutally selling out. They've remained true to themselves

- Finally

Over the last few Modest Mouse releases fans have all been trying to tell themselves that the band was just maturing. The sound was different, but it was still Modest Mouse. We were lying to our selves. On We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the songs just wern't very good. It's ok to say it now. Because this EP is fantastic. We've finally found the mature Modest Mouse we've been waiting for. No One's First and Your Last has the same creativity and honesty that was a staple of their original output. The music hasn't been this good since Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks. If this is the future for the band, then I'm perfectly happy.

- 1st Review! :)

1st Review! :) ahahhaah album sounds pretty good

- You guys have got it all...most

Good job guys!!! Good EP It sounds more like their earlier stuff like "The Moon & Antarctica" or "Building Something Out of Nothing" (earlier albums) Overall it's an awesome EP. Mostly no cuss words surprisingly! But...i think iTunes (or Modest Mouse) should release the same albums in a censored version for the people out there with a more sensitive consience...afterall, its always nice to be able to share the music you love w/the parents or younger siblings. And its common that the best sounding song has the worst lyrics. Anyways, good job iTunes and Modest Mouse!

- About time

It sounds like a nice mixture of Modest Mouse's earlier stuff, and their newer stuff. Satelite Skin, King Rat, and History Sticks to Your Feet seem to be pointing in a brand new direction. I've Got it All [Most] reminds me of One Chance. While Autumn Beds, and The Whale Song are reminescent of The Moon and Antarctica. And of course, my personal favorite, Perpetual Motion Machine features the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

- Return to the Modest Mouse dynasty

I was more than disappointed with "We were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank". I felt that Isaac and crew were taking the band in a bad direction. I've been a fan from the beginning, and for a long time, "This is a long drive..." was my favorite album of all time. Well, I'm pleased to say that Modest Mouse brought it back. The true highlights of this E.P. would have to be "Satellite Skin", "The Whale Song" and "King Rat". This album has truly flipped my opinion around about them, and they should be congradulated, for creating such amazing music.

- Modest Mouse is utterly fantastic

Modest Mouse is one of the most unique sounding bands i think i ever heard. King Rat is such a good song, and they've influenced me and a songwriter more than alot of bands. But this EP has great songs on it. My favorite songs are Little Motel, Missed the Boat, The World At Large, and King Rat.

- Good EP. Buy w/ Caution Though.

I think this is a compilation of some 2 track singles and smaller EP's that Modest Mouse has been releasing on iTunes recently. I know that earlier this year the tracks "Autumn Hills" and "Satellite Skin" were each released as singles and each included a bonus track. Make sure you didn't already buy those before you purchase this EP, b/c give or take a song, you'd have some doubles. If you don't have any of it though, buy it. This is a great collection from a band that I like more every time I hear some new stuff. If I has to recommend one song, it'd be "The Whale Song". Weird yet great. Nice guitar work.

- great, good & average

some great songs, like The Whale Song, which is Modest Mouse at its best - long rambling guitar hooks that effortlessly flow and ebb, and Perpetual Motion Machine, which is weird and wonderful, and some average songs like Satellite Skin which didn't do anything for me.

- great!

love this cd every song on it is great its good there going back to more of there old sound

- Life is Still Sweet

Most fans should already have these tracks in their collection because these songs are classic. There's nothing new here for me BUT I find some of these anti-Modest Mouse comments to be amusing. Just a bunch of cheap Sad Sappy Suckers who deny the present to dwell on the past. I'm sure Isaac couldn't care less...

- Well done!!!

Love it! Nothing will ever be quite as good as the We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank album but it's still great stuff. MM you always deliver. King Rat has the Ugly Casanova sound. I like it! Keep it up!
