Yummy!!!
Excellent album! Eric Clapton never disappoints and this album is just another example of his proficient knowledge of the blues. Great job! Now just come to a city near me!
I agree with the people that about pushing the envelope ie Neil young suggestion about recreating his sound. This album almost put me to sleep within the first five songs. I don't understand why I pay top dollar to see him 20 some odd times with guys like Steve Winwood and d trucks and the concert is most of the time epic and then he sits back and puts out the first half of this album?!? It's amazing to me that the highlights of guitar playing on an Eric Clapton albun are derek trucks. Go on tour with winwood, play blind faith tunes, and stop making your loyal fans like myself buy ur solo albums that are crooner meets soul less music. The second half of the album gets a little more gritty and emotional but the first half is just filth. It's unreal the first time I hear him REALLY play guitar is the 10th track?!?! What a bunch of cheesy garbage Hopefully the tour is better... See u then....
I don't even know where to begin except to say that it is a great album. I started listening to each song as it downloaded and it does not disappoint. "River Runs Deep" is a personal favorite.
Or reptile disfunction, which is certainly a problem at this age...
After deciding it was less expensive to download the entire album I was significantly surprised how good the sum of it's parts. The album offers an eclectic mix of Jazz, Blues and songs inspired in Clapton's earlier years. Repeated listenings made me appreciate even more the whole of the album; rare with most of todays recordings. These days, Clapton seems at his best when surrounding himself with talented musicians. The sound of New Orleans, the wailing harp, the heartfelt "Autumn Leaves" convince me that Eric is not yet ready to retire to the "Rocking Chair". Clapton has stated being pleasantly surprised at the change from the original conception of the album and believes fans will be too. Count me in!!!
Clapton... fantastic as usual
I dont know I find this album very boring! The worst is Autumn Leaves. His singing is horrible on this one. Sorry!
Clapton never dissapoints period. The artistry inside his soul runs dark and deep. All I can say is, hes done it again my rock n roll friends and a big thank you to, Mr Clapton for sharing again, more great great music!!
"When Somebody Thinks Your Wonderful" ,i think ur wonderful Eric!!! <3
Nice mixture of Bluesy Folk with a touch of some "Loosiana" French Quarter with "When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful". Funny, but this should have been his follow to "Unplugged" that wom him a Gramnmy. It's in keeping with that style, Bluesy, yet still as recognizable as "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out". But you know what, this will grow on you, or it just collect dust. We still need that Electric Eric, the one that unfurled the banner! Besides, if I close my eyes, I think I'm listening to a Leon Redbone album. It grows on you, or collects dust. 3 of 5 stars.
Way better than reptile
Clapton proves once again that he is a rock 'n' roll legend. Very Blues-y and very very awesome album.
Hes def. gone back to his roots. And I appreciate him going back to the pure blues, but I still have to go with unplugged as my album of choice. It really displayed his guitar abilities. Sounds like a good album, but I dont think its my taste
The jury is still out on whether I'm going to buy this album....Eric deserves the right to produce anything he wants, but this might be a little too mellow for my taste....hoping it will grow on me
This is a great Album, Eric's voice just gets better with time.... The only thing that should be different.... if I could suggest something would be the Album cover. I deeply respect the work of Terry O neil, but that image of Eric is far from good, in my opinion it portrays him as an aging arts teacher at a grammar school somewhere in surrey...... Not the influential musician he is. This opinion may well be biased, I am a photographer, a huge fan of traditional blues music, and a fan of Mr C. But then again it is just that, my opinion ;-D Thanks for the Music Mr C, if you need better images, give me a call... thanks Mike Devlin
Great background music for a small dinner party and age appropriate for Mr. C, but I still hold "From the cradle" as his high watermark.
The musicianship is great but it's 2010, not 1934.
On tour with Doyle Bramhall and Derek Trucks and then again out with Steve Winwood, Clapton proves that he's still got it. Why does he insist on continuing to release boring studio discs like this? If I wanted something soft and pretty...
Lot of very good solid Clapton music here, perhaps 10 out of 12 tracks. There are a couple songs, though, that are just plain dippy, like stuff my grandfather would listen to (and I'm 56 year old!).
I really like the background noise i have come to love in Claptons tracks this is WAY to clean.....dont get me wrong it is still awesome!! I just want him to make an underground recording in my basement studio with the old clicks and pops from the "getting ready to record" to the "Are we done " at the end of the 6th take and the guitar gets unplugged during recording!! those little details make Clapton FREAKS (such as myself) come back for more over and over again.....soo if you come across this review Eric it would give great pleasure for you to let me record you in my humble but very capable basement studio.......Enjoy Cheers!
I absolutely love this recording. Eric Clapton just gets better and better. I hope there's enough in the vault for Clapton 2. Thanks!!
It must be really great and gratifying to do an album you've been waiting to do just the way you want too with just the music you want on it. If you were to ask me to define you and your music, as it is for me, this would be the work I'd see you doing. Congratulations for doing just what you want too. I love it, thanks. Harold W Graham
E.C. just mellows with age and never gets stale. Just when you think you've heard it all, he comes up with " Diamonds Made From Rain". Laying in a hammock with your best girl on a warm summer day "River Runs Deep", couple of cool drinks later "My Very Good Friend The MIlkman", you just don't think life gets any better than this. Then he rocks you with "I Was Fooled". That's what this album feels like. It's good maturing through life with Mr. Clapton. Bravo!
The guitar work and vocals are as smooth as ever. Technically speaking the producers did a fine job bringing out his talents and those of the other artists on the album. As I have studied Clapton's work over the years I have come to the conclusion that his playing as he's gotten older has improved, or perhaps put differently, has become more subtle and engaging as it has become more sparse. Rather than feeling compelled to fill every moment with a note, as seems to be the case on Layla, for instance, he's building more aurally complex tunes by relying more on technique and melodic tone and less on pure brute force virtuosity. As to musical style on 'Clapton' I hear elements of 'Back Home,' 'Me and Mr. Johnson,' 'Road to Escondido,' and perhaps a little 'Riding with the King' thrown in for good measure. If you're a Clapton fan, I would be greatly surprised if you were disappointed by his latest offering. Has Slowhand still got it? No question.
Clapton Is God
First off Eric Clapton could play the phone book and make it sound presentable. That being said Eric Clapton is a legend and has earned the right to play whatever he wants but I don't like this release. I'm not going to call it bad because it's far from it but because it's all over the place and way too over produced I find it extreamly hard to listen to and during the first listen I found myself hoping most of the songs would hurry up and end so I could hear the next one and that wasn't from anticipation. After listening to it the 2nd time it dawned on me why I didn't enjoy it, too many strings and horns on the majority of the songs and not enough "slowhand" and did we really need an Eric and Sheryl Crow duet song? Also, there are 3 JJ Cale songs on this relaese which should be a plus but due to the over production with the strings & horns they get lost in the shuffle. Like I said I liked some of it and these are the songs I liked: Run Back To Your Side - Great Rock and Roll guitar driven song with Derek Trucks joining in. Really like this one but it's the next to the last song so it kinda shook me up when it started playing. Judgement Day, Can't Hold Out Much Longer, Hard Time Blues - All have a great Blues sound with Kim Wilson blowing the Harmonica on them. If you like Clapton the bluesman you will love these. I've read where people say it's better than Reptile but I'm not so sure since Reptile was closer to the 461 or Slowhand sound and although I rate this one much better then Pilgrim it sounds a lot like it.
First off this is a great album and anyone that enjoys varied musical styles will love this album and I am one of those people. That being said there will be many EC fans that just want to hear "screaming guitar" that will think EC copped out with mellower stuff. This album covers the range of great blues, rock, a little country to 30's & 40's standards and EC pulls it off with class and taste all done incredibly well in true Clapton fashion. As always he has a great group of musicians backing him, I really enjoy Kim Wilson's harmonica on the blues numbers. There really is something for everybody on this album and I am sure that even the hard core "screaming guitar" fans will eventually enjoy it.
I've been listening to the man for 30+ years but this album is not good at all. Sounds like he put it together on a rainy weekend when he had nothing to do. If this were elevator music, I'd get off at the next floor and take the stairs.
Here is Eric Clapton's latest album, at #6 on the iTunes chart!! Wow!! Goes to show that he's still got the magic!
As the other reviews state, this album will NOT disappoint. And, the comment about there being a little "Riding With the King" is especially astute.
Let me be the FIRST to say, simply epic! Real music, real heart & soul. Bravo!!
I mean, its not the Clapton classics everyone knows, but these aren't any less amazing, each song in its own way! I've been listening to it continuously over and over again for hours now, and i've enjoyed every second :D my favorites are probably Rockin' Chair and How Deep is the Ocean :)
A little uneven in places but overall a very strong album. For deeply personal reasons How Deep is the Ocean and When Somebody Thinks You Are Wonderful were very moving. Guitar work as usual was flawless. I highly recommend it.
I like it's slow bluwsy sound.
This is a really fantastic collection. In my mind one of his best. I love the mix of songs, his bluesy roots and the fun he obviously had making it. Thanks Eric!
this is claptons style, but i think he drifted a little to far away from the rock n roll'ness part of it like "Cocaine"
Eric doesnt have it anymore...sorry bro
new clapton and old blues
Best album since Journeyman! He still has it.
with a few blues tunes to uptic the tempo a bit. Night night.
