Pendulum - In Silico

About In Silico by Pendulum Album

In Silico is the second full-length studio album by Australian drum and bass band Pendulum, released in Australia and Europe on 12 May 2008 by Warner Music UK, and in America on 13 May 2008 by Atlantic. The album represents a change in sound from the band's debut album Hold Your Colour, away from drum and bass, incorporating more rock and electronic influences. The album peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart on 18 May 2008. Releases from the album include "Granite", "Propane Nightmares", "The Other Side" and "Showdown". The expression "in silico", from which the album title is derived, is used to mean "performed on computer or via computer simulation", however group member Gareth McGrillen also commented on the way it plays upon Nirvana's well-known album title In Utero (meaning "born naturally" or "of the uterus") and thus carries extra shades of meaning related to being "born synthetically", thus explaining the album's cover motif of a baby or foetus displayed inside a circular design (likely representing a synthetic ovum), which in turn references the blend of natural and synthesised sounds of the music therein.

- MUCH better!!

Better that hold your color and immersion i think. i LOVE it!!

- Change Your Visions

"In Silico" is an awesome album but not as D'n'B as "Hold Your Colour" but an album to get for sure. If you don't it'll be the biggest mistakes you ever made. Here are the tracks in order of worst to best: 10. Midnight Runner 9. The Tempest 8. Mutiny 7. Showdown 6. Different 5. Granite 4. 9,000 Miles 3. The Other Side 2. Propane Nightmares 1. Visions Keep in mind too I really like "Midnight Runner" but it was the weakest track on the album. "Visions" is the best track ever!! Get "In Silico" & "Hold Your Colour" because they go great together.

- AWESOME!!!but the release date is the 13th??

I'm sooooo hyped for this album and I'm glad it's out on iTunes but im pretty sure the U.S release date is May 13th so what is it doing on iTunes right now? and just in case anybody wanted to know, Pendulum is gonna be performing at the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore this august!!!

- In Silico-Insane!

OO OO AH AH TOOKIE TOOKIE!!! This album rocks! I've been waiting months for pendulums new cd to come out and im not dissapointed at all. A must have for any drum 'n bass head

- Even better than the first

Unfortunately, I don't often come across albums that I enjoy entirely. There's usually a couple of songs or so that I don't care for. That's not the case with this album. Every track is pleasing to my ears. Some fans don't like that they've changed their style, but I don't mind it. I enjoy their old and new sound.

- What?

Only 98 on the top 100. Arguably the best.

- The Song Title "Different" Puts it Best...

...but I do not believe it's at all better. Pendulum have left behind their grittier DnB sound for something very pop-y and this attempt at mass-appeal is like spitting in the face of all those DnB fans (who knew their even-better back catalogue BEFORE Hold Your Colour) who helped make them popular in their early days. Way to sell out Pendulum.

- Freaking AWESOME

PEndulum is an amazing band!!! hold your colour is an amazing album but i like the more rockish style than the ol' drum n' bass!!!!! The Tempest is definatly the best song on the album

- Very much not like Hold Your Colour, but solid nonetheless.

As a big d&b fan, Hold Your Colour is one of my favorite albums out there, and i had hoped this album would excede my expectations. While it did not, I was quite surprised by the outcome of In Silico. Pendulum dropped the tempo a little bit on most of the songs, and added alot of consonance, making for a more pop-like, and not so much drum and bass feel for most of the album, though a drum and bass influence can easly be detected in most of the sounds. It's all well written, maybe even slightly more refined than HYC, but of course nothing less is to be expected from Pendulum, and im sure it will grow on me quickly. Hold Your Colour is still carries a little more my opinion though, especially as a first buy for new Pendulum fans.

- What You Get

Wow! What an artistic jump this group has made. They slowed things down just enough so I don't feel ridiculous riding around in my car with this blasting. Great melodies and a different feel then the last CD. Totally worth the wait. Check out the website for a really cool 12 mix of all the tracks to try it out. You'll be back. I've been listening to that mix for a month now. The special edition looks to drop 5/13. Either that or this one became available early. Lucky me.

- Review

The description doesn't really do this album justice so just listen to the music - its good.

- True, Ecstasy

Alright, no, not like their other material. And not very true to their DnB title. But this music is off the charts good. It blows me away every time with the bass and the incredible beats and buildups....a MUST for anyone into suspenseful techno.

- buy then go see live

have just bought this album based on there live performance they were at radio 1 big weekend in england this weekend i was there to see the raconteurs ( who rocked) then got dragged in to see this lot not into drum and bass but they just rocked the place i have never seen a band get the crowd going from the back to the front came out covered in beer sweat water and loved every minute of it dont let the label fool you they are a great live band and i am not a indie kid i am a music loving thirty something so dont let labels fool you go see this band they play intruments check out radio 1 website to view the concert

- good but not too original...

does anyone else sense a muse/pendulum showdown after "In Silico", it matches Muse's Black Hole album, but pendulum has the original trance/drum/beat usually near the second half of the song...

- It works

If Pendulum has strayed from it's Electronica roots, and has upset some original fans I am glad they did. The song "The Tempest" in itself is worth every dollar of this online album In Silico. Pendulum is blowing up, don't hate on them and claim that they have "sold out" to their fans because they added a little rock to the sound. It works, and remember a musician makes music because they like the way it makes them feel and if you can't bob your head to Propane Nightmares, Granite, 9,000 Miles and The Tempest, there is no hope for you. I highly encourage this compilation. It is killer.

- This is one of those weird situations where

this is one of those odd situations where I don't really like where the band is going, but I'm still fond of they're new sound. I think hold your colour was the apex of club friendly drum and bass, it had that arena rock feel that made you want to go be awesome, but still had that electronicy drum and bass sound. With the new album they, Pendulum drops alot of the electronicy sound in favor of a more rock like sound, while still holding onto some of their signature driving synth lines and heavy beats (with the exeption of "granite", which still holds alot of that old pendulum style). I'm going to mourn the passing of a perfectly good Drum and Bass group as they add themselves to the all to full ranks of the synthy rock genre, but I'll still enjoy what they do. Basically, if it were anyone else, I'd be more down with this album.

- Pendulum

Great album, I usually dont buy songs from iTunes.... but for this one I bought the whole album. Keep up the good work

- Start here...

If you're new to Pendulum...start here. Some of the songs will be familiar (Showdown) and some will just blow you away (The Other Side, Propane Nightmares)...but the entire album is VERY solid and great to listen to all the way through...the FIRST time. This album is 5 out of 5 stars...and use it as a springboard to launch into their most recent release Immersion...which is somewhere around 7 out of 5 stars. But start here. :-)

- Change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.

You may have ruin some followers to make new ones. That's the point, that's the reason this album is so good, because it is different. I hope their next album is on another tangent too, screw all the 1 track minds and keep rockin it Pendulum.

- Press play album!

Love, love, love! I absolutely love this album from start to finish!

- first intro to Electronic music

This is the first experiance I had with house music and this album will always be timeless

- beast mode album

Pendulum continues to show why they’re the best. from Showdown to The Tempest, this playlist of tracks rocks!

- A Definite Improvement

I didn't think it could get better after Hold Your Colour, but it did. Every song on this album is simply amazing, and even though it might not impress in the first few listens, it grows on you like mad. At first I was thinking "Eh, it wasn't what I expected" but after playing it through twice, it has become a staple in my library, and constant listening still hasn't worn it out. Yeah, it's different from Hold Your Colour, but it's a more mature sound, and every music fan will enjoy it, even if they didn't like Hold Your Colour.

- Pendu-Rock?

Hate to reiterate on every review thus far, but this is Rock'N'Bass. This is great Rock'N'Bass. Rob Swire's vocals grace nearly every track, and the signature Pendulum kick-snare loop is instantly recognizable. Showdown starts the album powerfully, with an amazing hook, while Granite and The Tempest send it to a roaring finish. Don't expect most of the tracks on this album to be played in a D'n'B set, but expect them played out everywhere else.

- For those who aren't fans of straight Drum and Bass, start here

In Silico is different from most DnB (including Pendulum's Hold Your Colour), but it's a style of music that could stay around for a while without anyone complaining too much. For fans of rock, you'll find a familiar sound here, but with an entirely different flavor. The DnB roots of Pendulum make In Silico a distinct sound from both DnB and rock, but fans of both should enjoy it.

- Wonderful...great....

better have a good pair of speakers or headphones for this one. Hold your colour was great, but I'm enjoying this one more......

- Nice!

On this album, the songs I recommend are Propane Nightmares and The Tempest.

- Addictive! You don't want to miss out on this one.

At first I was like everyone else. Somewhat upset about the style difference to some extent. However, after listening to "In Silico" over and over again, I can't go back and view "Hold your color" in the same light anymore. This is much better on every level and considering it shows how they play live like the greats (The Prodigy, TCM and more) this album is a MUST HAVE! No doubt, I'd have to say that The Tempest is by far my fav.

- High Caliber Release

Some serious amount of polish went into making each and every one of the tracks on this album. It may not be DnB in the more traditional sense, but if it kills this bad who really cares what genre it is classified under?! Pendulum exceeds my expectations with this release (a huge feat after Hold Your Colour). My favorite tracks are bound to change the more and more I listen to this amazing album, but my current favorites are: Different, Propane Nightmares, Visions, The Other Side and The Tempest. Quality!!!

- Excellent, Matched my expectations and then some

Pendulum retains the title of being an inovator in DnB with In Silico. You don't want to pass this one up.

- great album

I love this band. i cant stop listening to "Visions", "The Tempest", and "9000 Miles". This is a great album from start to finish. definetly worth buying the album.

- I agree with Gobind its wasn't 100% amazing

I agress with Gobind, When I listened to the whole album I thought "thats quite good" but I dont think it was WOW, I guess like Hold Your colour some of the songs took awhile to catch on, but they where the ones that where the really good ones like plastic world, hold your colour, streamline and girl in the fire. I thought it was good they wanted to go in a new direction, but I would have waited for something better, maby this is just a trail for their new style and to see if they can hack doing tours, I hope that there next album will be as good as Hold your colour.

- One of the best albums I have ever heard!!!!

Pendulum has such a unique and energetic and this album just hits it home. It's even safe to say, they hit a grand slam with this album! Every track has such fun and intense energy that you can help to move around for every second. GREAT ALBUM!

- Rock'n'Bass Indeed

If you're like me and started listeneing to Electro-ish stuff after being a fan of Classic Rock, this albun will strike a major chord with you. "The Tempest" made my jaw drop.

- Excellent, though different from Hold Your Colour..

Though some may find this album too different from Pendulum's first release, Hold your Colour, I like the direction Pendulum headed for this album. It's much less drum and bass (though there's still quite a bit, just not as hard as their first album) and more about mixing electronic and 'analog' instrumentation. (Much in the way that BT experiements with the same idea.) If you're looking for blisteringly-hard Drum 'n Bass, you won't find it here, but you can't mistake that Pendulum can write a bloody good hook.

- ehhh. this is not dnb

I love pendulum, or at least I loved Hold Your Color, then they came out with this... It's not the same. The vocals take away from the songs (but it's not like the songs were going anywhere to begin with). Pendulum is trying to pass this off as a new album? They transposed the same song from track to track, with just changing vocals (a little, if that) and messed with the sound distortion levels. BOOO, Pendulum, BOOOOO!

- Not Bad Actually, Entice the limbic system!

Been a growing pendulum fan for the past couple years, and this album is a very different but good change in direction for them. From "Showdown" to "The Tempest", this is a great album. To me, and hopefully others, this is a BIG change from the usual drum and bass, I really like the sound of the songs, and how they really drive, get you into it. Great for getting AMPED!

- Not Better than Hold Your Colour but it's Alright

After listening to every trackI must say this is not a soul shattering release like Hold Your Colour. I'm sure this album will sell more due to Pendulum's name and it being more rockish but it just don't have that replay ability that the first album had. Pendulum was dubbed as a DnB prodigy. This album doesn't showcase that genius well. From the previous album I loved all of the tracks. Hold Your Colour is one of the best tracks of all time, Sounds of Life, Streamline, and Plastic World show the Pendulum's strength when it comes to beautiful melodic songs but still can bring some hard DnB with Slam, Girl in the Fire, and Another Planet. This album just doesn't have creativity. Some people say that Pendulum didn't want to make similar tracks and show something new but my retort is why not make similar tracks since the old tracks were stuff of genius. Showdown: It's a good opener but you don't "Feel" Pendulum until around 2mins 3.5/5 Different: This track has it's ups and downs but the singing gets annoying at times but then improves during certain parts. The breakdowns for this song are pretty good though. 4/5 Propane Nightmares: It's a good track but for me it doesn't hold the "Wow, i can't believe someone actually created something this awesome" I don't really like the style it goes into when the singing starts 3/5 Visions: This song is pretty good. I really like the breakdown in the song around 2:45. Very enjoyable track but like most of the album it seems they didn't focus on their strengthes 4/5 Midnight Runner: I love the intro for this song. How the voice flows and the beat drops. Wow, it's just aweosme but then after awhile you don't hear the singing anymore throughtout the song which is kinda let down 4.5/5 The Other Side: This is a very cathy song. "The Ship is Coming down." The guitar and drums are pretty good. Vocals are pretty catchy but if I heard it with out knowing it was Pendulum I wouldn't have guessed it was them, if thats good or bad I'll let you decide. 3.5/5 Mutiny: Same idea as the Other Side except you hear a little more of old Pendulum but not so much where you wanna jump out of your seat but it's a ok track nonetheless. Didn't really care for the guitar solo though....but the breakdown at 3mins into the song is awe inspiring. 4.25/5 9,000 Miles: Great song, if they had created more stuff like this for the album it would've been a change but still keeping the aspects that they were strong in. 4.5/5 Granite: Really same response as 9,000 Miles. Great song. It shows their wanting their change but it show it in a great way. 4/5 All in all if I could give them a 3.5 stars for the album I would but I'll just settle for four because I hope Pendulum learns from this album and the response from it. I just hope that we don't have to wait another 3 years for another "That was alright I guess" album.

- Amazing

and the coming Immersion is even better. those of you who say this album is worse than Hold Your Colour need to listen to this again. seriously, Hold Your Colour is kinda terrible and In Silico is far ahead of it's time. my only complaint is that it doesn't have enough songs, because all of them are amazing. Theres not a single song i don't like on this album. buy it >_<

In Silico Wiki

In biology and other experimental sciences, an in silico experiment is one performed on a computer or via computer simulation software. The phrase is pseudo-Latin for 'in silicon' (correct Latin: in silicio), referring to silicon in computer chips. It was coined in 1987 as an allusion to the Latin phrases in vivo, in vitro, and in situ, which are commonly used in biology (especially systems biology). The latter phrases refer, respectively, to experiments done in living organisms, outside living organisms, and where they are found in nature.
